Seasonal Variability of Sonic Layer Depth in the Central Arabian Sea

  • The seasonal variability of sonic layer depth (SLD) in the central Arabian Sea (CAS) (0 to $25^{\circ}N$ and $62-66^{\circ}E$) was studied using the temperature and salinity (T/S) profiles from Argo floats for the years 2002-2006. The atmospheric forcing responsible for the observed changes was explored using the meteorological data from NCEP/NCAR and Quickscat winds. SLD was obtained from sound velocity profiles computed from T/S data. Net heat flux and wind forcing regulated SLD in the CAS. Up-welling and down-welling (Ekman dynamics) associated with the Findlater Jet controlled SLD during the summer monsoon. While in winter monsoon, cooling and convective mixing regulated SLD in the study region. Weak winds, high insolation and positive net heat flux lead to the formation of thin, warm and stratified sonic layer during pre and post summer monsoon periods, respectively.

거리장을 이용한 삼각망의 옵셋팅 (Offsetting of Triangular Net using Distance Fields)

  • A new method which uses distance fields scheme and marching cube algorithm is proposed in order to get an accurate offset model of arbitrary shapes composed of triangular net. In the method, the space bounding the triangular net is divided into smaller cells. For the efficient calculation of distance fields, valid cells which will generate a portion of offset model are selected previously by the suggested detection algorithm. These valid cells are divided again into much smaller voxels which assure required accuracy. At each voxel distance fields are created by calculating the minimum distances between corner points of voxels and triangular net. After generating the whole distance fields, the offset surface were constructed by using the conventional marching cube algorithm together with mesh smoothing scheme. The effectiveness and validity of this new offset method was demonstrated by performing numerical experiments for the various types of triangular net.

  • Even in an era where 8-meter class telescopes are common, small telescopes are considered very valuable research facilities since they are available for rapid follow-up or long term monitoring observations. To maximize the usefulness of small telescopes in Korea, we established the SomangNet, a network of 0.4-1.0 m class optical telescopes operated by Korean institutions, in 2020. Here, we give an overview of the project, describing the current participating telescopes, its scientific scope and operation mode, and the prospects for future activities. SomangNet currently includes 10 telescopes that are located in Australia, USA, and Chile as well as in Korea. The operation of many of these telescopes currently relies on operators, and we plan to upgrade them for remote or robotic operation. The latest SomangNet science projects include monitoring and follow-up observational studies of galaxies, supernovae, active galactic nuclei, symbiotic stars, solar system objects, neutrino/gravitational-wave sources, and exoplanets.

RETScreen 기반 유휴공간 태양광 발전 시스템의 경제성 평가 연구 - 부산시 강서구 사례를 중심으로 - (Economic Evaluation of Unused Space PV System Using the RETScreen Model - A Case Study of Busan, Gangseo-gu -)

  • Recently, There has been much discussed about unused space. This space can be used in a variety of ways. Utilizing it as a facility, craft shop, and utilizing renewable energy generation facilities. Especially, in terms of climate change should be supplied renewable energy. Renewable energy needs to be developed in terms of responding to climate change, and the recent Paris agreement is also emphasizing the importance of renewable energy. In particular, renewable energy needs to be widely disseminated. And renewable energy is limited space. In this regard, idle land can provide opportunities for securing new renewable energy generation facilities. The introduction of new and renewable energy facilities in idle space can enhance the self-sufficiency rate of the local community, which is significant in terms of responding to climate. In this study, to investigate the possibility of utilizing a unused space for a photovoltaic power generation facility, we investigated the amount of electricity which could be generated through photovoltaic power generation, and the economic effects, using a RETScreen model. The results showed that 9,738 MWh of power can be generated and that $4,540tCO_2eqcan$ be saved. Regarding the economic effect, the net present value of the facility was shown to be 2,247,389,020 KRW. As the net present value was shown to be positive, we believe that the installation of a photovoltaic power generation facility in an unused space would have a positive economic effect. We found the net present value following the fluctuation of the SMP price to be positive, though there was some variation. However, as the economic efficiency was shown to be low because the net present value in relation to the maintenance costs was negative, we believe that maintenance costs must be taken fully into account when evaluating economic efficiency. In particular, as subsidies can be used to cover maintenance costs which must be factored into photovoltaic power generation, we believe that photovoltaic power generation can have an economic effect. Because spaces not currently in use can have a positive economic effect as renewable energy power generation facilities, and can also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, unused spaces are thought to greatly help local governments to cope with climate change as well as reinforcing their related capabilities. We believe our study will help local governments with decisions relating to unused real estate utilization in the future.

EVALUATION OF SURFACE HEAT FLUXES FOR DIFFERENT LAND COVER IN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT

  • Our goal is to obtain a better scientific understanding how to define the nature and role of remotely sensed land surface parameters and energy fluxes in the heat island phenomena, and local and regional weather and climate. By using the MODIS visible and thermal imagery data and analyzing the surface energy flux images associated with the change of the landcover and landuse in study area, we will estimate and present how significant is the magnitude of the heat island heat effect and its relation with the surface parameters and the energy fluxes in Taiwan. To achieve our objective, we used the energy budget components such as net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux in the study area of interest derived form remotely sensed data to understand the island heat effect. The result shows that the water is the most important component to decrease the temperature, and the more the consumed net radiation to latent heat, the lower urban surface temperature.

다중 신경망 레이어에서 특징점을 선택하기 위한 전이 학습 기반의 AdaBoost 기법 (Transfer Learning based on Adaboost for Feature Selection from Multiple ConvNet Layer Features)

  • Convolutional Networks (ConvNets) are powerful models that learn hierarchies of visual features, which could also be used to obtain image representations for transfer learning. The basic pipeline for transfer learning is to first train a ConvNet on a large dataset (source task) and then use feed-forward units activation of the trained ConvNet as image representation for smaller datasets (target task). Our key contribution is to demonstrate superior performance of multiple ConvNet layer features over single ConvNet layer features. Combining multiple ConvNet layer features will result in more complex feature space with some features being repetitive. This requires some form of feature selection. We use AdaBoost with single stumps to implicitly select only distinct features that are useful towards classification from concatenated ConvNet features. Experimental results show that using multiple ConvNet layer activation features instead of single ConvNet layer features consistently will produce superior performance. Improvements becomes significant as we increase the distance between source task and the target task.

녹지총량제의 국외사례 및 국내 적용가능성 (Feasibility Study on the Introduction of No Net Loss of Green)

  • Due to the increasing needs of land supply, green space has been continuously encroached and resulted considerable naturality deterioration in Korea. In order to overcome the problem, it is necessary to introduce a integrated system for managing the quantitative and qualitative aspects of green space. With this regard, this study is to derive the feasibility for the adoption of the 'no net loss of green' policy to Korea from German and Japanese experiences. In Germany, natural resources are protected and inevitable damages were compensated through the adoption of 'interference regulation'. In Japanese case, future green space and artificial green foundation should be specified on the green basic plan which pursuit the improvement of naturality. In order to introduce the 'no net loss of green' policy to Korea, not only awareness raising on integrated green management system but also amendment of related regulations are needed. In detail, restoration and recovery on the damaged nature should be clearly elucidated and indicators to evaluate the current naturality and calculation methods for the restoration should be developed. Should this integrated green management system introduced, deterioration of naturality by development activities could be minimized thorough the adoption of land development permission criteria and green space management methodologies.

CombNET 신경망을 이용한 혼용 문서 인식 시스템의 구현 (An implementation of the mixed type character recognition system using combNET)

  • 문자인식에 대한 연구는 주로 한글인식에 대해서만 이루어져 왔는데, 대부분의 문서는 한글 뿐만 아니라 여러 종류의 문자가 포함되어 있다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 다중 크기, 다중 활자체, 다자종 문자가 포함되어 있는 한글문서를 인식할 수 있는 문자인식 시스템을 구현하였다. CombNET 구조를 갖는 신경회로망을 자종별로 구성하여, 문자인식시에 문자를 구별하지 않고 인식하는 방법을 제안하였다. CombNET 구조의 상단부를 차지하는 Kohonen의 SOFM 신경망을 이용하여 한글과 한자는 36개, 영숫자는 16개의 유형으로 분류하고 각 유형에 대해서 CombNET 구조의 하단부에 있는 BP 네트워크를 이용하여 문자인식을 수행하였다. 실험결과 학습 데이타에 대해서는 95.6%의 인식율을 나타내었고, 실제문서에 대해서도 92.6%의 인식율과 초당 10.3자의 인식속도를 보임으로써 제안된 인식 시스템의 유효성을 입증하였다.

자연환경하에서 암석의 풍화특성과 풍화암석의 강도평가 (Weathering Characteristics of Rock under Natural Environment and Strength Evaluation of Weathered Rock)

  • 자연환경하에 있는 암석의 풍화특성과 풍화된 암석의 강도평가를 위하여 다양한 크기의 아소 가족묘비석을 대상으로 탄성파 속도를 측정하였다. 그 결과 크기가 다른 시료를 동일한 크기로 환산하여 탄성파 속도를 평가하는 크기 보정법과 새로운 암석 풍화지표로서 NET(Normalized Elapsed Time)를 제안하였다. 또한 NET을 이용한 암석 풍화 분류로부터 풍화암석에 대한 강도를 추정하였다. 용결응회암의 경우 탄성파 속도는 높고 속도저하는 거의 나타나지 않았지만, 안산암의 경우 탄성파 속도는 낮고 속도저하 현상이 관찰되었다. $V_p/V_o$-NET 곡선에 근거한 NET를 이용할 경우 크기가 다른 다양한 암석에 대해 같은 크기로 풍화정도를 비교할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다. 또한 $S_c/S_o$-NET 곡선에 의한 NET을 이용하여 암석의 풍화단계 분류가 가능하였으며, 이것으로부터 풍화 암석에 대한 강도추정도 가능하였다.
