  • Sunspots usually appear in a group which can be classified by certain morphological criteria. In this study we examine the moments which are statistical parameters computed by summing over every pixels of contours, in order to quantify the morphological characteristics of a sunspot group. The moments can be additional characteristics to the sunspot group classification such as McIntosh classification. We are developing a program for image processing, detection of contours and computation of the moments using continuum images from SOHO/MDI. We apply the program to count the sunspot numbers from 303 continuum images in 2003. The sunspot numbers obtained by the program are compared with those by SIDC. The comparison shows that they have a good correlation (r=89%). We are extending this application to automatic sunspot classification (e.g., McIntosh classification) and flare forecasting.

  • Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute(KASI) joined the Gemini Observatory as a 'Limited-Term Partner' in 2014, and is providing the Gemini facility for Korean community through K-GMT Science Program starting from 2015. The access to Gemini facility is expected to open a new window of opportunities in the field of optical and infrared observational researches and to help efficient development of science cases for GMT. We will present the short and long-term expectations and possible outcomes of the KASI-Gemini partnership.

  • This study is investigates space syntax theory, developed by Bill Hiller, used for physical analysis and visual access of space and role of spatial configuration based on social logic. it mean computer program analyze physical structure of space and represent by mathematical logic. it used for predict space use and Descriptive of spatial configuration. This method and theory is incompletion for design, but it enough useful tool for architecture and urban design and will be improved. And development of a simple computer program - SSA(Sspace Syntax Analysis) for space syntax analysis and study. SSA is based on convex map analysis and using VISIO software for easily using and development.

  • The purpose of this study is proposing a method of developing experience program for organizing continuous 'Recreating Cultural and Traditional Village'. Therefore, with having purpose of developing experience program which is deeply related with residents organization and architecture in the village, the researcher has participated in '2005 An-dong Gunjamaul Recreating Cultural and Traditional Village', accomplished developing experience program which can continuously manageable by residents and space and facilities which are accompanied with program. The results of this research are as follows. The developing process of experience program has four phases, selecting program, planning program, growing and changing program, and practicing and firmly establishing program. Moreover, the relationships between space planning and setting up a resident's organization and the experience program need to be considered. The things that experts have to consider are come up with three subjects. First, planning experience program with citizen participation. Second, designing experience program with spaces which will contain the programs. Third, developing programs which are accompanied with rediscover village's resources through continuous feedback.

  • To design a space frame structure by the conventional method is not easy in practical sense since it is generally a three-dimensional complicated form, and stability and nonlinear problems are not easily checked in the design process. This paper describes two modules, the Model Generator which is based on PATRAN user interface that enables users to generate a complicated finite element model; the Optimum Design Module which analyzes output results of analysis program, and designs members of a space frame. The Model Generator is based on PCL while C++ language is used in the Optimum Design Module. Structural analysis is performed by using ABAQUS. All of these modules constitute Space Frame Integrated Design System. The Core of the system is PATRAN database, in which the Model Generator creates information of a finite element model. Then, PATRAN creates input files needed for the analysis program from the information of the finite element model in the database, and in turn, imports output results of analysis program to the database. Finally, the Optimum Design Module processes member grouping of a space frame based on the output results, and performs optimal member selection of a space frame. This process is repeated until the desired optimum structural members are obtained.
