  • This study suggests the methods of the assessment and creation of biotopes in small and medium sized cities, in Korea. For this purpose, Chonju city was selected to classify and asses the biotope types. Moreover, relevant legislations to conserve and enhance urban biotopes were examined. The results of this study are as follows: 1) There were two approaches to asses the potential of urban biotopes in medium-sized cities. One was the urban scale evaluation for urban green spaces and the other was the biotope scale evaluation for the classification and evaluation of biotopes. 2) The urban scale evaluation was developed through overlaping analysis of landuse and vegetation factors. This study also included the conception of watershed. In this conception, three watersheds in Chonju city were characterized. According to these characteristics, individual programs for conservation and enhancement of urban green space were suggested. 3) For the biotope scale evaluation, Selected site was inclusively mapped and field investigation actually was carried. There were total 9 types of bitopes. Especially landuse was appeared in various evaluation items were vegetation structure, area of green space, condition of vegetation and vegetation profile. Mt, Gonji and Dukjin park, Chonbuk national University and fields were evaluated highly I the potential. 4) The biotope programs were based on the results of assessment and physical characteristics of biotopes. The uniform and simple levels on vegetation must be modified with various levels of vegetation structure and vernacular plants. And the physical characteristics like Points, Corridors and Patches can be organized by the conception of biotope networking theory. 5) The proper legislative environment was the clue elements for the biotope programs. Until now, only five types of parks and two types of green space are defined and the minimum size of green space has been proposed by the law. So, it is necessary to enlarge the conception of green space in legislation and improve the quality of green space by amending the related regulations. This study has limitation because it was selected only in Chonju. Through the continuous studies, we need to apply this other small and medium sized cities, South Korea. Also the data collection and management of theme maps such as actual vegetation, landuse and a soil must be done preliminary.

  • Shenyang was one of the representative transportation hub of Northeast China during the modern period. The formation and development of the railway network gave great influence on Shenyang's city development. In order to understand the relationship between railway and city development, first, we classified Shenyang's city development period by the railway network's formation and expansion process. Then, we analyzed the relationship between railway and city space by five categories. The results of this study are as follows. First, before railway was constructed, Shenyang was a castle city, which also was the economic center of Northeast China. This was the main reason Shenyang was chosen as a railway zone. During the modern period, the castle structure became an obstacle to city transportation and environment, therefore, it was disposed. During the period of railways' expansion, South Manchuria, Jingfeng and Shenhai railway line was constructed in Shenyang. Since each line had different operation organizations, city sites along the railways were planned separately. However, these operation organizations had one common purpose, which was to use railway as an accelerator for economic development. During the period of railway's military usage, railway was reorganized as military supply transport for the Japanese, which also was used as a tool for the expansion of colonialism. Second, after Shenyang's city space was reconstructed along the railway, it created a close connection with city structure, city facilities, landscape and city transportation system. Hence, the railway system played a key role in modern city planning.

  • In modern society the architecture surface involves a lot of meaning other than having simple physical functions. The interface space generated by the surface characteristics among those becomes to have many significances in modern society, and plays a role of symbolic space of a city. The interface space is threshold space that connects two separate spaces and revitalize its states. Nowadays, people have many chances to communicate each other through the interface space and also settle urban problems caused by spacial and functional discontinuity through the interface space. However, the interface space in Korea could not be built up well due to rapid growth of cities, and a lot of different natures in space and viewpoint have been appeared accordingly, which gives rise to a problem of the discontinuity of urban spaces. Therefore, this study aims at the research on the characteristics of interface space through architecture surface composing the major factor of a city; architecture integument in Nam-po Dong, Jung Gu, Busan City as the object of the study.

  • We aimed to find new space types and characteristics for creating gardens in the city through the type of idle space in the city, present guidelines that can be used in creating gardens in the future, and establish basic data for expanding green infrastructure. As a result, we found that the idle space in the city was classified into four types, and it was determined that differentiation should be given to the creation of each type. The achievements of this study can be a potential source of urban ecosystem services that can provide community benefits and opportunities for urban regeneration through the redevelopment of the community and support the health and well-being of local residents. In addition, urban idle space can be a valuable resource as a green infrastructure that can be used to support the health of urban ecosystems and improve the quality of life of urban residents.

  • The purpose of this study is to present an appropriate approach to urban regeneration by analyzing Gwangju Metropolitan City. For the study, residential area of Asia Culture Complex was analyzed based on GIS. The areas concerned were categorized and looked into by their Situation based on the analysis of urban infrastructure state. However, as the architectural space within a city are limited, and accurate assessment of them is needed. The residential areas have the following characteristics. They become an aging and dilapidating residential and socially underprivileged-concentrated area. It is necessary to set up a direction for a future-oriented planning for the development of these areas. Along with a decreasing population, it is important to improve the urban architecture environment for the elderly in an aging society. The economic growth of a city if necessary for the future. Therefore, the criteria for the assessment is required. And the subsequent setting-up and planning of a future direction for a city is badly needed. After that, an accurate assessment of a city called for. City space allows for various interpretations. As the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, a wealth is concentrated on one district or an area.

  • It is not entirely new tendency now that museum have to become 'participation and working activity style' in 21st century. A lot of museums are changed fast to that visitors participate and work actively in museum program recently in Korea. Cheongju city is building various museums which have interesting themes contributed precious inheritances and collections belong to citizens. And Cheongju city is pushing ahead long-term target which is Ecomuseum City Cheongju with citizen is progressing for cultural city continuously. Also to become public museums and facilities which visitors want to come again, Cheongju city is trying to secure various experience space and facilities to keep in step in trend that visitors take part in and work actively in museum program. In an area, there are various cultural, historical, natural and industrial heritages that express relation of human and environment. In meaning that do function of antenna of sending culture which understanding, studying, informing these regional inheritances and promoting activity, in Ecomuseum, those are called "satellite" included not only regional preserved inheritances but also various theme museums which have mutual cooperative function. • This study investigates whether urban expansion can act as a cause of the decline of the original city center through the Space Syntax methodology. The urban spatial structure analysis was conducted targeting the downtown area of Jeju-eupseong. The time points for longitudinal analysis were set at five points between 1914 and 2021 including the Japanese colonial period when the cadastral map was drawn up in Jeju City, and the urban spatial structure was analyzed and compared for each time point. ASA (Angular Segment Analysis) was used as a technique for urban spatial structure analysis. This study shows that urban expansion is a cause of the decline of the original downtown. The original city center has moved away from the center as the urban structural change due to the urban expansion. The urban structure of the eastern part of Jeju City has undergone a major transformation between 1914 and 2021. As the old Jeju area where the original city center was located is geographically in contact with the sea, urban sprawl has been made toward Halla Mountain and further to the south of Jeju. Accordingly, the city center has transformed from a monocentric to a polycentric structure. Due to the dynamics of the urban sprawl, the old downtown of Jeju became one of the peripheral neighbourhoods in the Greater Metropolitan of Jeju.

  • Historically, humans settled in waterside areas that provided abundant resources and water resources. Afterwards, as industrialization progressed, the city's waterfront contributed to the development of the city through water resources, transportation, and maritime trade. In response to changes in industrial structure, over the past few decades, the city's waterfront has transitioned from an industrial and port-oriented function to a public space function. And from the perspective of urban regeneration, research and design on sustainable waterfront space development are being promoted around the world. However, areas near waterfronts are geographically vulnerable to the direct impact of natural disasters caused by climate change, such as sea levelrise and floods. Therefore, it is essential to establish a systematic management plan to ensure the safety of citizens and publicness. Since the 1990s, New York City in the United States has been establishing a city-level waterfront space management plan to ensure the public nature, safety, and equity of waterfront spaces. On the other hand, in South Korea, there is a lack of research on city-level waterfront management plans. Accordingly, this study sought to find implications and policy improvement measures for domestic waterfront space planning by examining the development process and major policies of New York City's waterfront comprehensive plan.
