  • According to Norman McLaren, a Canadian animator, "Animation is not art of moving pictures but art of drawn motions". As he puts it, animation performs the role of magic that turns static to dynamic. Particularly, the space of animation, which is generated through merger of several layers, creates distinctive space that is not to be found in other art genres. Also, the motion of animation, which, unlike live action in film, can be limitlessly created according to a director's subjective domain, has a more autonomous existence. In this paper, I study the space and motion in animation grounded in a director's subjective domain, based on the works by Tabaimo, the Japanese animator director and modern artist. She made an independent use of color sense and perspective that maximized a flat surface, which contributed to creating a new world that doesn't exist in reality. Motion created in such a space is more relative than universal. Therefore, Tabaimo's animation has made aggressive use of a device that gives more originality to the director's themed world, while audience can participate in the strange but new world.

  • There is no doubt that science -and, therefore, science education- is central to the lives of all (NGSS, 2013). This manuscript focuses on ideas in astronomy that are at the foundation of elementary students' understanding of the discipline: the apparent motion of the sun explaining the day / night cycle on Earth. According to prior research demonstrating that neither children nor adults hold a scientific understanding of the big ideas of astronomy (NRC, 1996), understanding of concepts may base students' progress towards more advanced understanding in the domain of astronomy. We have analyzed the logic of the domain and synthesized prior research assessing children's spatial representation from an earth- and a space based perspective to develop a set of learning trajectories that describe how students' initial ideas about apparent celestial motion as they take school science can be build upon. In this study elementary students' representations were compared by their resident context including urban and rural. This study may present a first look at the use of a learning progression framework in analyzing the structure of astronomy education. We discuss how this work may eventually lead towards the development and empirical testing of how children learn to describe and explain apparent patterns of celestial motion.

  • The effect of grain size on the time-dependent piezoelectrice degradation of a poled PZT of MPB composition Pb0.988Sr0.012 (Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 with 2.4 mol% of Nb2O5 was studied, and the degradation mechanism was discussed. Changes in the internal bias field and the internal stress both responsible for the time-dependent degradation of poled PZT were examined by the polarization reveral technique, XRD and Vickers indentation, respectively. The piezoelectric degradation increased with increasing time and grain size, and the internal bias field due to space charge diffusion decreased with increasing grain size of poled PZT. The internal bias field, however, was almost insensitive to the degradation time regardless of the grain size. On the other hand, both the x-ray diffraction peak intensity ratio of (002) to (200) and the fracture behavior including the crack propagation support that the ferroelectric domain rearrangement of larger grain size showed rapid relaxation of the internal stress compared with smaller one, which is thought the origin of the larger piezoelectric degradation in the former. In conclusion, the contribution of space charge diffusion on the piezoelectric degradation of PZT is strongly dependent on both the grain size and the composition. Thus, the relaxation of internal stress due to the ferroelectric domain rearrangement as well as the amount and time-dependence of the internal bias field due to space charge diffusion should be considered simultaneously in the degradation mechanism of PZT.

  • H-infinity norm relates to the maximum in the frequency response function and H-infinity control method focuses on the case that the vibration is excited at the fundamental frequency, while 2-norm relates to the output energy of systems with the input of pulses or white noises and 2-norm control method weighs the overall vibration performance of systems. The trade-off between the performance in frequency-domain and that in time-domain may be achieved by integrating two indices in the mixed vibration control method. Based on the linear fractional state space representation in the modal space for a piezoelectric flexible structure with uncertain modal parameters and un-modeled residual high-frequency modes, a mixed dynamic output feedback control design method is proposed to suppress the structural vibration. Using the linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique, the initial populations are generated by the designing of robust control laws with different H-infinity performance indices before the robust 2-norm performance index of the closed-loop system is included in the fitness function of optimization. A flexible beam structure with a piezoelectric sensor and a piezoelectric actuator are used as the subject for numerical studies. Compared with the velocity feedback control method, the numerical simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The Time Domain Field is one of the future GTO program fields of JWST(JWST/GTO TDS), surveying about 14' diameter field at the North Eliptical Pole(NEP) with NIRCam/NIRISS. As a part of the multi-wavelength study of the field, we have obtained SCUBA-2 850㎛ mapping which reaches a depth of σrms = 0.9mJy/beam and detect 93 sources at S/N > 3.5 ― which are expected to be highly star-forming (SFR>400M◉/yr) galaxies at z ≳ 1.5-4 and pinpoint the location at <0. " 1 accuracy of 68 sub-mm sources by identifying VLA 3GHz radio counterparts. In this talk, we will introduce the SCUBA-2 JWST/GTO TDS project and the newly discovered sub-mm sources in this field.

  • This study investigated school mathematics curriculum of England, newly revised in 1998, focused on the 'shape, space, and measures' domain among three major domains of the English curriculum. On the basis of its understanding, this domain was compared and analyzed with school mathematics curriculum of Korea. In doing so, this study explored its plans and procedures and established a frame of comparison for the curriculums between the two countries. The structure of the National Curriculum in England is composed of programmes of study and attainment targets. The former sets out what should be taught in mathematics at key stages 1, 2, 3, and 4 and provides the basis for planning schemes of work, and the latter sets out the knowledge, skills, and understanding that pupils of different abilities and matures are expected to have by the end of each key stage. Attainment targets are composed of eight levels and an additional level of increasing difficulty. According to the results of the present study, Korea focuses on the formal and systematic mathematical knowledge on the basis of sound understanding of certain mathematical terms or concepts. On the other hand, England curriculum tends to deal with the content which can be understood more intuitively, flexibly, and naturally through the experience and aquisition based on the concrete manipulation. Particularly, it emphasizes that mathematics be realistic and useful in solving a diverse problems confronted in everyday life.

  • In the two-dimensional (2D) modeling of electrical method, the potential in the space domain is reconstructed with the calculated potentials in the wavenumber domain using inverse Fourier transform. The inverse Fourier integral is numerically evaluated using the transformed potential at different wavenumbers. In order to improve the precision of the integration, either the logarithmic or exponential approximation has been used depending on the size of wavenumber. Two numerical methods have been generally used to evaluate the integral; interval integration and Gaussian quadrature. However, both methods do not consider the distance from the current source. Thus the resulting potential in the space domain shows some error. Especially when the distance from the current source is very small or large, the error increases abruptly and the evaluated potential becomes extremely unstable. In this study, we developed a new method to calculate the integral accurately by introducing the distance from the current source to the rescaled Gauss abscissa and weight. The numerical tests for homogeneous half-space model show that the developed method can yield the error level lower than 0.4 percent over the various distances from the current source.

  • This paper proposes a distributed space-frequency block code (SFBC) for relay-assisted single carrier frequency-domain equalization (SC-FDE). The proposed technique achieves spatial diversity gain over fast fading channels without the complexity of multiple antennas. The mobile equipment of the proposed system has a very simple transmitter structure with constant amplitude transmit sequences, which is desirable especially for uplink communications. In order to obtain spatial diversity, the transmit sequence of relay is efficiently generated in the time domain, which is equivalent to the SFBC. Further, efficient implementation of relay and destination structures is also presented. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed system significantly outperforms the distributed space-time block code (D-STBC) SC-FDE over fast fading channels.
