Weather launch criteria of launch at Oenarodo Space Center is important for the successful launch operation. In particular, most of the launch failure occurs during the period of separation from the launch pad, thus meteorological condition is critical at this phase. In earlier days, the weather launch criteria adopted wind and forecast data for the launch operation. Nevertheless, the control of position and stability require other meteorological components such as vertical wind shear, lightning, temperature and visibility, because the launch vehicle is moving mostly vertically. We analyze these meteorological components by using the observed data at KMA at neighboring Oenarodo to determine the weather launch criteria. These criteria need further refinements through long-term observation.

Nowcast and forecast based on realtime data are quite essential for space weather monitoring. We have developed the web pages (http://sun.kao.re.kr) of the KAO Space Weather Monitoring system by using ION (IDL on the Net). They display latest solar and geomagnetic data, and present their expected effects on satellite, communications and ground power system. In addition, daily NOAA/SEC prediction reports on the probability of solar X-ray flares, proton events and geomagnetic storms are provided. To predict the arrival times of interplanetary shocks and CMEs, two different types of prediction models are also implemented. A work is in progress to develop web-based database of several solar and geomagnetic activities. These data are automatically downloaded to our data server in every minute, or every day using IDL and FTP programs. In this paper, we will introduce more details on the development of the KAO Space Weather Monitoring system.

Recently, real time data acquisition become important for space weather forecast and research. In this work, we have developed the data acquisition tools and their applications for space weather monitoring. We have developed programs to download the space weather data using IDL as well as programs to interactively display the image and data using ION (IDL on the Net). By using these tools, we have constructed the mirror site of Active Region Monitor (ARM) which summarizes several different solar activities, and developed ION programs to display TEC(Total Electron Contents) maps from GPS data at the passage of Korean satellites. At present, the KAO ARM mirror site (http://sun.kao.re.kr/arm) is successfully updated in every thirty minutes. The TEC maps from GPS data are expected to be used for monitoring the space environment of Korean satellites.
The Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) from GPS with high resolution in terms of time and space might reduce the limitations of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model for easily variable phenomena, such as precipitation and cloud. We have converted to PWV from Global Positioning System (GPS) data of Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF). First of all, we have selected the heavy rainfall case of having a predictability limitation in time and space due to small-scale motion. In order to evaluate the effect for GPS PWV, we have executed the sensitivity experiment with PWV from GPS data over Korean peninsula in the Weather Research & Forecasting 3-Dimensional Variational (WRF-3DVAR). We have also suggested the direction of further research for an improvement of the predictability of NWP model on the basis of this case.
GK2A(GEO-KOMPSAT-2A)satellite has been operating excellently since its launch in Dec 2018. The secondary payload called KSEM (Korean Space Environment Monitor) was equipped into the GK2A satellite along with AMI (Advanced Meteorological Imager) sensor. KSEM is the Korea's first operational geostationary space weather sensor and has been developed collaboratively by KHU (Kyung Hee University) and KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute). The interface works between KSEM and GK2A were conducted by KARI. Various interface tests, which aim for evaluating effective functionality of KSEM with the spacecraft, were intensively conducted at KARI facilities. Main tests consisted of mechanical and electrical check-up activities between the KSEM and GK2A. Interface tests of KSEM, which involve pre-launch tests such as ETB and GK2A system level tests, were conducted to evaluate functional and performance of KSEM before the launch. The tests carried out during the GK2A LEOP (Launch and Early Orbit Phase) and IOT (In Orbit Test) period (Dec 2018 ~ June 2019) showed excellent in-orbit performance of KSEM data.

In this talk, we present a good example of extreme solar and geomagnetic activities from October to November, 2003. These activities are characterized by very large sunspot groups, X-class solar flares, strong particle events, and huge geomagnetic storms. We discuss ground-based and space-based data in terms of space weather scales. We applied the CME propagation models to these events in order to predict the arrivals of heliospheric disturbances. For the space weather research, KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute) is developing the SNIPE (Small-scale magNetospheric and Ionospheric Plasma Experiment) mission, which consists of four 6U CubeSats of ~10 kg. Besides of space weather research, the SNIPE mission has another astrophysical objective, detecting Gamma-Ray Bursts(GRB). By cross-correlating the light curves of the detected GRBs, the fleet shall be able to determine the time difference of the arriving signal between the satellites and thus determine the position of bright short bursts with an accuracy ~100'. To demonstrate the technology of the GRB observation, CSI gamma-ray detectors combined with GPS and IRIDIUM communication modules are placed on each SNIPE CubeSat. The time of each spacecraft is synchronized and when the GRB is detected, the light curve will be transferred to the Mission Operation Center (MOC) by IRIDIUM communication module. By measuring time difference of each GRB signals, the technology for localization of GRB will be proved. If the results show some possibilities, we can challenge the new astrophysical mission for investigating the origin of GRB.
In this paper, we present a good example of extreme solar and geomagnetic activities from October to November, 2003. These activities are characterized by very large sunspot groups, X-class solar flares, strong particle events, and huge geomagnetic storms. We discuss ground-based and space-based data in terms of space weather scales. Especially, we present several solar and geomagnetic disturbance data produced in Korea : sunspots, geo-magnetograms, aurora, Ionogram, and Total Electron Content (TEC) map by GPS data. Finally, we introduce some examples of the satellite orbit and communication effects caused by these activities; e.g., the disturbances of the KOMPSAT-1 operational orbit and HF communication.
Interstellar objects originate from other stellar systems. Thus, they contain information about the stellar systems that cannot be directly explored; the information includes the formation and evolution of the stellar systems and the possibility of life. The examples observed so far are 1l/Oumuamua in 2017 and 2l/Borisov in 2019. In this talk, we present the possibility of detecting interstellar objects using the Heliospheric Imagers designed for space weather research and forecasting by observing solar wind in interplanetary space between the Sun and Earth. Because interstellar objects are unpredictable events, the detection requires observations with wide coverage in spatial and long duration in temporal. The near-real time data availability is essential for follow-up observations to study their detailed properties and future rendezvous missions. Heliospheric Imagers provide day-side observations, inaccessible by traditional astronomical observations. This will dramatically increase the temporal and spatial coverage of observations and also the probability of detecting interstellar objects visiting our solar system, together with traditional astronomical observations. We demonstrate that this is the case. We have used data taken from Solar TErrestrial RElation Observatory (STEREO)/Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation (SECCHI) HI-1. HI-1 is off-pointed from the Sun direction by 14 degrees with 20 degrees of the field of view. Using images observed from 2007 to 2019, we have found a total of 223 small objects other than stars, galaxies, or planets, indicative of the potential capability to detect interstellar objects. The same method can be applied to the currently operating missions such as the Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter and also future L5 and L4 missions. Since the data can be analyzed in near-real time due to the space weather purposes, more detailed properties can be analyzed by follow-up observations in ground and space, and also future rendezvous missions. We discuss future possible rendezvous missions at the end of this talk.
