  • A computational fluid analysis was performed on an LOx line system of a liquid rocket engine. The model was created with 3D CAD and imbedded to the 3D CFD program. Before the full scale analysis on the system was carried out, each components with simplified models was analyzed to save time and cost. As a result, the inlet pressure of the gas generator should be compensated with a certain device unless the inlet pressure of the line system is sufficiently high. The flow pattern of the exit of the system was dependant upon the location of the orifice as well as the size. As a whole the line system analyzed met the requirements, and will be tested and confirmed after being manufactured.

  • A program that can simulate gas generator after burning liquid rocket engines was developed along with presenting the characteristics of the engines. The program was written in Matlab and used GUI interface so that many users can use it without any difficulties. The results of the program was compared with the real engine which was developed by the LRE advanced country. Most of the parameters concurred within 1% error expect for the pressure at the turbopump. The reasons of the large differences were supposed that pressure decreases at the schematics were smaller than that of the real engines.

  • In order to build a conceptual design program for a liquid rocket engine system, performance based sub-programs for each core component of the engine system were made. Parts included were the combustion chamber, supersonic nozzle, centrifugal pump, and impulsive turbine. Simple mathematical models based on classical thermodynamic and inviscid theories were adopted with proper tuning by empirical data. In Part I, aiming to validate each sub-program, we examined the results of each program qualitatively, and parametrically investigated the sensitivity due to the change in design parameters.

  • The cooling mechanism for a liquid rocket engine of 10tf-thrust using kerosene as a fuel was studied from the viewpoint of both the regenerative and curtain cooling. Based on the concept of a highly-stratified gas flow in the combustion chamber, the cross section of the combustion chamber was spilt into 2 independent parts, core and exterior part. Additional fuel is injected into the exterior section and gas temperature can be reduced in the exterior section. Consequently, the heat flux into the coolant and wall temperature are reduced and the thermal stability of a liquid rocket en g i.ne could be improved.

  • This paper describes the development of the dual-thrust rocket motor, which gets a significant change in thrust level by varying the burning area of the propellant grain. Reduced smoke propellant of low burning rate was formulated and the finocyl type grain was designed to get the boosting- and sustaining-phase of the thrust level. And the motor firing data were analyzed in detail. Developed motor was applied to the missile system to implement the successful flight test and this development helped to upgrade the performance of the missile system. The results will be usefully applied to the development of the similar rocket motors.

  • In this study, determination method of initial optimal nozzle expansion in pintle rocket was investigated. The initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was decided by maximizing the mass-averaged thrust coefficient that is calculated from thrust coefficient of minimum and maximum chamber pressure. The determination of initial optimal initial nozzle expansion was equivalent to that of the minimum propellant mass which was required for obtaining the desired mission performance. The highest pressure, thrust turndown ratio and total impulse ratio effected on the initial optimal nozzle expansion. Among them, total impulse ratio had great influence on the initial optimal nozzle expansion.

  • Thermal effect of finite-rate chemistry on linear combustion stability and film-cooling effect are investigated in sample rocket engines. The flow variables required to evaluate stability limits are obtained from CFD data with finite-rate chemistry adopted in three dimensional chamber. Major flow variables are affected appreciably by finite--rate chemistry and thereby, the calculated stability limits are modified. It is found that finite-rate chemistry contributes to stability enhancement in thermal point of view. And film cooling also has the effect of combustion stabilization.

  • A system design has been performed for a vacuum thrust 88 ton staged combustion cycle rocket engine. Previous research has been used to estimate the performance of the engine components. And the algorithm has been proposed to evaluate the converged engine system performance. The present methodolgy has been verified by comparing the published data for RD-180. The present work adopts the most of the previous KSLV-II engine heritage for both performance improvement and cost competitiveness. The combustion pressure has been decided as 12MPa considering manufacturing difficulty, cost and performance improvement, and as a result the vacuum specific impulse has increased by 23.4s.

  • The peculiar motion of the observer, if not (or only imperfectly) accounted for, is bound to induce a well-defined clustering signal in the distribution of galaxies. This spurious signal is related to the Kaiser rocket effect. We examined the amplitude of this effect and discuss possible implications for analysis and interpretation of future cosmological surveys. We found that it can in principle bias very significantly the inference of cosmological parameters, especially for primordial non-Gaussianity.

  • There has been significant increase in demand of launch opportunities from the small satellite sector that represents the new space era. Providing smallsat-dedicated launch service at an affordable price is a new business model many startup companies have pursued, which requires innovative solutions for cost reduction in combination of low cost components, volume production and optimized manufacturing. We set out a preceding study at KARI to develop a suite of critical and cost-cutting technologies in preparation for a two-staged small launch vehicle development, based on the liquid rocket engine technologies developed from the Nuri program in accordance with the 3rd master plan for national space development. In this work, we introduce the concept of a two-staged small launch vehicle that aims to be innovative and cost competitive for small satellites, and describe mission design results including staging as well as overall vehicle configuration of the launch vehicle.
