Vibration Based Structural Damage Detection Technique using Particle Swarm Optimization with Incremental Swarm Size

  • A simple and robust methodology is presented to determine the location and amount of crack in beam like structures based on the incremental particle swarm optimization technique. A comparison is made for assessing the performance of standard particle swarm optimization and the incremental particle swarm optimization technique for detecting crack in structural members. The objective function is formulated using the measured natural frequency of the intact structure and the frequency obtained from the finite element simulation. The outcomes of the simulated results demonstrate that the developed method is capable of detecting and estimating the extent of damages with satisfactory precision.

  • An approach for composing a performance optimized computational code is suggested for the latest microprocessors. The concept of the code optimization, termed localization, is maximizing the utilization of the second level cache that is common to all the latest computer systems, and minimizing the access to system main memory. In this study, the localized optimization of the LU-SGS (Lower-Upper Symmetric Gauss-Seidel) code for the solution of fluid dynamic equations was carried out in three different levels and tested for several different microprocessor architectures widely used these days. The test results of localized optimization showed a remarkable performance gain of more than two times faster solution than the baseline algorithm for producing exactly the same solution on the same computer system.

  • In this paper, a method of station keeping strategy using relative orbital motion and numerical optimization technique is presented for geostationary satellite. Relative position vector with respect to an ideal geostationary orbit is generated using high precision orbit propagation, and compressed in terms of polynomial and trigonometric function. Then, this relative orbit model is combined with optimization scheme to propose a very efficient and flexible method of station keeping planning. Proper selection of objective and constraint functions for optimization can yield a variety of station keeping methods improved over the classical ones. Nonlinear simulation results have been shown to support such concept.

  • This paper considers the optimum design of flexbeam cross-sections for a full-scale bearingless helicopter rotor, using an efficient hybrid optimization algorithm based on particle swarm optimization, and an improved genetic algorithm, with an effective constraint handling scheme for constrained nonlinear optimization. The basic operators of the genetic algorithm, of crossover and mutation, are revisited, and a new rank-based multi-parent crossover operator is utilized. The rank-based crossover operator simultaneously enhances both the local, and the global exploration. The benchmark results demonstrate remarkable improvements, in terms of efficiency and robustness, as compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms. The developed algorithm is adopted for two baseline flexbeam section designs, and optimum cross-section configurations are obtained with less function evaluations, and less computation time.

Workspace Optimization and Kinematic Performance Evaluation of 2-DOF Parallel Mechanisms

  • This paper presents the kinematics and workspace optimization of the two different 2-DOF (Degrees-of-Freedom) planar parallel mechanisms: one (called 2-RPR mechanism) with translational actuators and the other (called 2-RRR mechanism) with rotational ones. First of all, the inverse kinematics and Jacobian matrix for each mechanism are derived analytically. Then, the workspace including the output-space and the joint-space is systematically analyzed in order to determine the geometric parameters and the operating range of the actuators. Finally, the kinematic optimization of the mechanisms is performed in consideration of their dexterity and rigidity. It is expected that the optimization results can be effectively used as a basic material for the applications of the presented mechanisms to more industrial fields.

  • Global sensitivity analysis (GSA) has been widely used to investigate the sensitivity of the model output with respect to its input parameters. In this paper a new single-solution search optimization algorithm is developed based on the GSA, and applied to the size optimization of truss structures. In this method the search space of the optimization is determined using the sensitivity indicator of variables. Unlike the common meta-heuristic algorithms, where all the variables are simultaneously changed in the optimization process, in this approach the sensitive variables of solution are iteratively changed more rapidly than the less sensitive ones in the search space. Comparisons of the present results with those of some previous population-based meta-heuristic algorithms demonstrate its capability, especially for decreasing the number of fitness functions evaluations, in solving the presented benchmark problems.

  • Lots of effort toward design optimizations have been paid for a cost-effective system design in various ways from a transistor level to RTL designs. In this paper, we propose a bit level optimization of an adder design for expanding its design space. For the bit-level optimization, a heterogeneous adder organization utilizing a mixture of carry propagation schemes is proposed to design a delay-area efficient adder which were not available in an ordinary design space. Then, we develop an optimization method based on Integer Linear Programming to search the expanded design space of the heterogeneous adder. The novelty of the Proposed architecture and optimization method is introducing a bit level reconstruction/recombination of IPs which have same functionality but different speed and area characteristics for producing more find-grained delay-area optimization.

Wing Design Optimization for a Long-Endurance UAV using FSI Analysis and the Kriging Method

  • In this study, wing design optimization for long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is investigated. The fluid-structure integration (FSI) analysis is carried out to simulate the aeroelastic characteristics of a high-aspect ratio wing for a long-endurance UAV. High-fidelity computational codes, FLUENT and DIAMOND/IPSAP, are employed for the loose coupling FSI optimization. In addition, this optimization procedure is improved by adopting the design of experiment (DOE) and Kriging model. A design optimization tool, PIAnO, integrates with an in-house codes, CAE simulation and an optimization process for generating the wing geometry/computational mesh, transferring information, and finding the optimum solution. The goal of this optimization is to find the best high-aspect ratio wing shape that generates minimum drag at a cruise condition of $C_L=1.0$. The result shows that the optimal wing shape produced 5.95 % less drag compared to the initial wing shape.

Shape optimization of blended-wing-body underwater glider by using gliding range as the optimization target

  • Blended-Wing-Body Underwater Glider (BWBUG), which has excellent hydrodynamic performance, is a new kind of underwater glider in recent years. In the shape optimization of BWBUG, the lift to drag ratio is often used as the optimization target. However this results in lose of internal space. In this paper, the energy reserve is defined as the direct proportional function of the internal space of BWBUG. A motion model, which relates gliding range to steady gliding motion parameters as well as energy consumption, is established by analyzing the steady-state gliding motion. The maximum gliding range is used as the optimization target instead of the lift to drag ratio to optimizing the shape of BWBUG. The result of optimization shows that the maximum gliding range of initial design is increased by 32.1% though an Efficient Global Optimization (EGO) process.

CL-data Optimization of 5-axis Face-milling Via C-space and Effective-radius Map (C-space 및 유효반경-맵을 이용한 5축 페이스 밀링의 공구자세 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • Five-axis NC machining, in general, is utilized in fabricating impellers, turbine blades, marine propellers that can be machined more effectively rather than three-axis machining. There have been many researches concerning tool interference avoidance, optimization of tool orientation. The C-space or Configuration-space was originated from the robotics area, which depicts interference-free joint-values in motion planning. In the paper we propose an optimizing scheme by which the maximum effective-radius of a face-milling cutter can be achieved for each CC(cutter-contact) point. Also the concept of a C-space for a CC point, the effective-radius map for 5-axis face-milling, and some illustrative examples of marine propeller machining, are presented.
