  • Transesterifications of vegetable oils (soybean oil, grapeseed oil, corn oil, canola oil) by ultrasonic energy were examined on various catalysts for biodiesel production. Reaction activities of the transesterifications were evaluated to the ultrasonic energy and thermal energy. The physicochemical properties and product distribution were also investigated to the biodiesels produced from the oils in the reaction using ultrasonic energy. The yields of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) on the alkali catalysts were higher than those on the acid catalysts. The highest FAME yield was obtained as 83% on potassium hydroxide catalyst in the transesterification. The effective reaction conditions by ultrasonic energy were 1 wt% catalyst loading and 6:1 molar ratio of methanol to vegetable oils. The reaction rate of the transesterification by ultrasonic energy was faster than that by thermal energy. The acid values of the biodiesel products were improved above 30% compared to those of the feedstocks.

  • In this study, the exhaust gas of a diesel engine operating on biodiesel(BD) fuel(a mixture of diesel and soybean oil) was investigated for different fuel mixing ratios in the range of BD3 to BD100. The experiments were conducted using injection pressures of 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 bar. The Pearson correlation coefficient and Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient were used to quantify the NOx and Soot emissions based on the fuel mixing ratio and injection pressure. Consequently, the Pearson correlation coefficient obtained for NOx and Soot emissions according to the mixing ratio and injection pressure was -0.811 and the corresponding Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient was -0.884, which indicated that the correlation of the NOx and Soot emissions was linear. Thus, the NOx and Soot have a trade-off relationship. Moreover, at each injection pressure, the Pearson correlation coefficient was a negative number, which indicated an inversely proportional relationship between NOx and Soot.

  • Compared with the spark-ignition gasoline engine, the compression-ignition diesel engine has reduced fuel consumption due to its higher thermal efficiency. In addition, this reduction in the fuel consumption also leads to a reduction in $CO_2$ emission. Diesel engines do not require spark-ignition systems, which makes them less technically complex. Thus, diesel engines are very suitable target engines for using biofuels with high cetane numbers. In this study, the spray characteristics of biofuels such as vegetable jatropha oil and soybean oil were analyzed and compared with those of diesel oil. The injection pressures and blend ratios of jatropha oil and diesel oil (BD3, BD5, and BD20) were used as the main parameters. The injection pressures were set to 500, 1000, 1500, and 1600 bar. The injection duration was set to $500{\mu}s$. Consequently, it was found that there is no significant difference in the characteristics of the spray behavior (spray angle) in response to changes in the blend ratio of the biodiesel or changes in the injection pressure. However, at higher injection pressures, the spray angle decreased slightly.

  • Bio-diesel (BD) is the mono alkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from renewable feed stocks like vegetable oils or animal fats. Bio-diesel shows poorer fuel properties than that of diesel fuel in a cold condition. For the diesel fuel, many cold flow improvers have been developed; however, since primary ingredients of bio-diesel are different from those of the diesel fuel, there is a limit to the cold flow improvement when the same cold flow improvers are added to bio diesel. In this study, to improve low temperature properties of bio-diesel, we developed a cold flow improver using an alkyl methacrylate monomer, prepared via ester reaction, and maleic anhydride and also conducted a ring opening reaction using amine. We characterized the products using $^1H-NMR$, FT-IR and GPC methods. In addition, the cold flow improvements of the products in Soybean BD and Palm BD in the concentration rage of 1000~10000 ppm were investigated. It was found that the addition of LMA2SMA6MA2-C8A in Soybean BD improved the pour point by $12.5\;^{\circ}C$.

  • The status of biodiesel (BD) production and consumption, specifications and market status in Korea are discussed in this review. The main feedstock to produce BD is soybean oil and waste cooking oil in domestic, and some companies have tried to diversify BD feedstocks. Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) has begun a pilot project to produce BD feedstock from rapeseed for 3 years since 2007. In July 2006, Ministry of Commerce, Industry & Energy (MOCIE) and the domestic oil industry reached an agreement under which BD0.5 is supplied in market, and 158400 MT of BD would be supplied between 2007 and 2008. MOCIE reported that it will increase BD 0.5% every year to reach BD3 by 2012. It is expected that BD supply would continuously increase domestically in the future.

  • Production of biodiesel from soybean oil catalyzed by Lewis acidic ionic liquids(ILs) containing metal chloride salts was investigated in this study. Metal chloride salts, such as $SnCl_2$, $ZnCl_2$, $AlCl_3$, $FeCl_3$ and CuCl, were screened for oil transesterification in the range of 363-423 K. Among these metal chlorides, tin chloride showed particularly high catalytic property for the oil transesterification. Similarly, among these Lewis acidic ionic liquid catalysts, $[Me_3NC_2H_4OH]Cl-2SnCl_2$ resulted in a high fatty acid methyl esters(FAMEs) content of 91.1% under the following reaction conditions: 403 K, 14 h, and a molar ratio of 1:12:0.9 (oil:methanol:catalyst). Unlike the pure tin chloride catalysts, Lewis acidic ILs containing tin chloride $[Me_3NC_2H_4OH]Cl-2SnCl_2$ catalyst could be recycled up to five times without any significant loss of activity by separating from the FAMEs with simple decantation. The Lewis acidity and high moisture-stability of this catalyst appeared to be responsible for the excellent catalytic performance. The effects of reaction time and the molar ratio of methanol/catalyst to oil on the FAMEs production were also studied in this work.

  • The basic strength of the MgO catalyst was enhanced by impregnating it with KF to synthesize a highly active catalyst for the bio-diesel production. To increase basicity, KF impregnated on synthesized MgO in laboratory. The synthesized catalyst was characterized using $N_2$ adsorption-desorption, X-Ray diffraction, X-Ray fluorescence, and $CO_2$ temperature programmed desorption analyses. Bio-diesel was produced from soybean and methanol and its fatty acid methyl ester content was measured to evaluate the activity of the catalyst. The catalyst impregnated with 30 wt% KF exhibited the highest activity, which was attributed to its abundant intermediate base site.

  • Following the extraction of oil for biodiesel production, oilseed press cakes are high in fat. As the dietary supplementation of fat is currently considered the most promising strategy of consistently depressing methanogenesis, it follows that oilseed press cakes may have a similar potential for $CH_4$ abatement. As such, this study aimed to characterise the nutritive value of several oilseed press cakes, glycerine and soybean meal (SBM) and to examine their effects on in vitro ruminal fermentation, digestion kinetics and $CH_4$ production. Moringa press oil seeds exhibited the greatest in sacco effective degradability (ED) of DM and CP (p<0.05). In vitro gas production (ml/g digested DM) was not affected (p = 0.70) by supplement at 48 h of incubation. In vitro DMD was increased with the supplementation of glycerine and SBM at all levels of inclusion. Moringa oilseed press cakes produced the lowest $CH_4$ (mg/g digested DM) at 6 and 12 h of incubation (p<0.05). The findings suggest that moringa oilseed press cake at 400 g/kg DM has the greatest potential of the oilseed press cakes examined in this study, to reduce $CH_4$ production, without adversely affecting nutrient degradability.

  • Due to its oxygen (O) content, biodiesel (BD) is advantageous in that it lowers PM emissions in CI engines. Therefore, BD is considered one of the best candidates for low temperature combustion (LTC) operation because its use can extend the regime for simultaneous reduction of PM and $NO_x$. Thus, in this study, LTC operation was realized using BD and diesel with a 5~7% $O_2$ fraction. Engine test results show that the use of BD increased the efficiency and reduced emissions such as PM, THC, and CO; furthermore, IMEP reduced by 10~12% owing to the lower LHV of the fuel. In particular, smoke was suppressed by up to 90% because O atoms in the BD enhanced the soot oxidation reaction. To compensate the IMEP loss, turbocharging (TC) was then tested, and the results showed that the power output increased and PM was reduced further. Moreover, TC in BD engine operation allowed a similar level of reduction in both $NO_x$ and PM at 11~12% $O_2$ fraction, suggesting that there is a potential to widen the operating range by the combination of TC and BD.
