Mean Flow and Variability at the Upper Portion of the East Sea Proper Water in the southwestern East Sea with APEX Floats

  • 16 APEX floats, autonomous profiling floats deployed as part of the Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) program, are used to understand the currents at 800 m underwater in the southwestern East Sea. The flow penetrates into the Ulleung basin (UB) through two paths: an extension of the southward flowing the North Korean Cold Water along the east coast of Korea and between Ulleung Island and Dok island. Flows at 800 m are observed range 0.2 to 4.29 cm/sec and the variability in the north in the DB is stronger than that in the south. The eddy kinetic energy is found a few $cm^{2}$ $S^{-2}$. In the UB, cyclonic flows from 0.3 - 1.6 cm/see are observed with the bottom topography.

오키나와 트러프 잠재 지진해일 전파특성 (Propagation Characteristics of Potential Tsunamis in Okinawa Trough)

  • 오키나와 트러프에서 발생되는 잠재 지진해일의 한반도 남서외해에서의 전파특성을 규명하기 위한 수치모의를 수행하였다. 동중국해 대륙붕의 얕은 수심과 오키나와 트러프의 깊은 수심은 이 지역에서 발생하는 지진해일의 전파특성에 중요한 역할을 한다. 전파특성은 전파 단계에 따라 두 가지로 분류된다. 첫 단계는 수심이 깊은 트러프를 따라서 북동과 남서방향으로 전파해가는 과정이고, 두 번째 단계는 등수심선과 직각방향으로 동중 국해의 대륙붕으로 진입하는 과정이다. 수치모의 결과 오키나와 트러프에서 발생하는 지진해일파는 남서외해의 특수한 해저지형의 영향으로 우리나라 남해안과 서해안에 미치는 영향이 매우 작은 것으로 나타났다.

Factors Affecting the Wintering Habitat of Major Fishery Resources in Southwestern Korean Waters

  • We investigated the temperature and salinity effects on the major fish species in the wintering grounds based on trawl surveys and oceanographic observations in the southwestern waters of Korea during March-early April in 2002-2003. The influence area of warm Kuroshio water was limited to the southwestern area of Korea in 2003 with a range of $7.7-16.3^{\circ}C$, 32.54-34.70 of salinity, wider than that of 2002. The number of fish species and density of major fish species in 2003 were higher than in 2002. Geographical estimation showed high proportions of species number and catches in the areas around Jeju Islands, southwestern waters and the southeastern coast of Korea. Five species; silver pomfret (Pam pus echinogaster), hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus), anchovy (Engraulis japonicus), Small yellow croaker (Larimichthys polyactis) and yellow goosefish (Lophius litulon) were most abundant, composing above 60% of the total catch in 2002 and 2003. More than 50% of catch in the major fish species were mostly distributed in the range of $9.5-11.0^{\circ}C$ of temperature and 33.1-33.9 of salinity. Non-parametric estimation for the major species showed the 1st mode around $10^{\circ}C$ and the 2nd mode at $8-9^{\circ}C$ in 2002 and $11-14^{\circ}C$ in 2003. Among major fish species, hairtail was principally composed of juveniles, and larger individuals were caught in southeastern waters. These results are considered to be helpful for the area-based fishery management strategy for the wintering grounds of the Yellow Sea and coastal waters of Korea.

복합하중을 고려한 국내 서남해 지반에서의 Spudcan 설계 (Spudcan Design under Combined Load in Southwestern Sea of Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 가이드라인에 제시된 스퍼드캔의 설계 프로세스에 따라 서남해 연약지반 조건에 최적화된 스퍼드캔의 형상 및 크기를 도출하고, 안정성 평가를 위한 복합하중 작용 시의 항복면을 정의하였다. 이를 위해 일정한 수직하중 작용 시 수평하중과 모멘트 하중을 가하여 수평하중-수평변위, 모멘트-회전변위간의 상관관계를 통해 항복면을 산출하는 프로브 방법을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 복합하중을 고려한 서남해 지반에서 요구되는 스퍼드캔의 직경은 8m로 나타났으며, 가이드라인에 제시된 지지력 산출경험식을 통해 지지력을 계산할 경우 얕은 심도에서는 비교적 정확한 지지력의 예측이 가능한 것으로 나타났다. 제시된 항복면은 Mohr Coulomb 모델과 Hardening soil 모델을 각각 적용하였을 시 서로 다른 형상을 보였으나, 스퍼드캔의 직경이 증가함에 따라 점차 확장되는 경향을 보였다. 본 연구를 통해 제시된 항복면은 실제 스퍼드캔이 설치될 지역의 지반조사 결과, 가이드라인과 더불어 추후 해상풍력단지 조성 시 스퍼드캔의 안정성 평가에 유용한 참고자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

동해 남서대륙붕 표층퇴적물의 살아있는 저서성 유공충 분포 (Benthic Foraminiferal Communities of Surface Sediments in the Southwestern Continental Shelf of the East Sea, Korea)

  • 동해 남서대륙붕은 부산에서 포항까지 내대륙붕에 니질퇴적물이 띠형태로 형성되어있다. 이 지역은 분급도가 대체적으로 불량한 니질퇴적물로 구성되어있다. 연구지역의 물리적, 지질적 그리고 지형학적인 차이는 아마도 살아있는 유공충의 분포에 영향을 미치리라 생각된다. 동해 남서니질퇴적물의 환경기준선을 설정하기 위하여 총 17개의 정점에서 45종의 살아있는 저서성유공충을 이용하여 검증을 해보았다. 살아있는 저서성유공충의 집괴분석은 5개의 서식지로 구분되었다. 이러한 서식지는 각 서식지의 모든 정점에서 나타나는 종에 의하여 각각이 뚜렷하게 구별되고 있다. 각 서식지를 구성하는 종들은 해류, 수심, 영양염 그리고 해저퇴적물의 특정이 서로 연관되어 형성된 것으로 보인다.

The Records of Origin and Transport of Sediments From the Past to the Present in the Yellow Sea

  • A total of 116 surface sediment samples were obtained on the Yellow Sea and analyzed for grain size and geochemical elements in order to interpret the present sediment transportation. Thirty-nine cores and 3,070 line-km shallow seismic profiles are analyzed for sedimentary records of Yellow Sea in the past. Results show that the boundary of sediment transport between Korean side and Chinese side is about between $123^{\circ}E$ and $124^{\circ}E$. The similar result is produced from Shi et al. (in this publication). Two cyclonic patterns of surface sediments are recognized in the northeastern and southwestern Yellow Sea, while the strong front zone of the mud patch and sandy sediments are found in the southeastern Yellow Sea (the southwestern part of Korean coasts). The formation of fine-particle sediment packages, called for Northwest Mudbelt Deposit (NWMD), Hucksan Mudbelt Deposit (HSMD) and Jeju Mudbelt Deposit (JJMD), are resulted from eddies (gyres) of water circulations in the Yellow Sea. NWMD has been formed by cyclonic (anticlockwise) eddy. NWMD is composed of thick, homogeneous, relatively semi-consolidated gray clay-dominated deposit. On the other hand, HSMD and JJMD are formed by anticyclonic (clockwise) eddies. They are thick, homogeneous, organic-rich gray, silt-dominated deposit. Both core and surface sediments show that the middle zone across Chinese and Korean side contains bimodal frequency of grain-size distribution, indicating that two different transport mechanisms exist. These mud packages are surrounded by sand deposits from both Korea and China seas, indicating that Yellow Sea, which is the shallow sea and epicontinental shelf, is formed mostly by sand deposits including relict sands. The seismic profiles show such as small erosional/non-depositional channels, sand-ridges and sand-waves, Pleistocene-channelfilled deposits, a series of channels in the N-S major channel system, and thick Holocene sediment package, indicating that more complex sedimentary history exists in the Yellow Sea.

동해 남부 연안용승지수의 변화 (Change of Coastal Upwelling Index along the Southeastern Coast of Korea)

  • 동해 남서부 해역의 해양생태계에 큰 영향을 미치는 연안용승의 변화를 파악하기 위해 1948년 1월부터 2018년 9월까지의 NCEP/NCAR 재분석자료를 이용하여 용승지수를 계산하였다. 평균 용승지수는 4월부터 8월까지 용승이 발생하는 양의 값이 보이며 7월에 최대 값이 나타났다. 용승지수의 장기 변화는 6월과 7월에 통계적으로 유의미한 감소추세가 나타났으며, 5, 6, 7월 용승지수의 합도 통계적으로 유의미한 감소 경향을 보였다. 한반도 주변의 대기압 분석을 통하여 용승지수의 변화 추세는 동해남부해역을 기준으로 북서쪽 영역($35-50^{\circ}N$, $114-129^{\circ}E$)의 기압 변화 추세의 영향이라는 것을 밝혔다. 최근 7년간(2012년-2018년)의 용승지수 분석결과 2017년 7월에 용승지수가 표준편차의 3배 이상 높은 것을 발견하였다. 이것은 중국 북동쪽 지방에 평년과 다르게 저기압이 발달하였고 북태평양고기압이 일본과 대만 사이까지 영향을 주어 동해 남부에 큰 기압 차이가 발생했기 때문이었다. 반면에 평년에 비하여 북쪽의 저기압과 남쪽의 고기압의 영향이 적었던 2018년 7월은 용승지수가 음의 값이었다. 동해남부 연안용승지수는 기후변화에 따라 감소하는 경향을 보이고 경년변동이 커서 생태환경에 대한 영향을 파악하기 위해서는 지속적인 모니터링이 필요하다.

A Study in the neighbouring sea variation of Cheju and Influence of China Coastal Water by Topex/Poseidon Altimeter Data and in-situ Salinity Data

  • Appearance and disappearance of the China Coastal Waters(CCW) in the neighbouring sea of Cheju Island was very different yearly but usually appeared strongly in summer. At this time, sea level and salinity were varied in this area by the influence of the CCW. Satellite data(T/P;Topex/Poseidon) and Salinity (NFRID;National Fisheries Research and Development Institute) were used from 1993 to 2001. We compared with TG data of NOR I and TIP data in the observed station(33 31'N, 12632'E). Coefficient of correlation was 0.6~0.8 with the exception of 1993 and 1995. And variations of salinity was higher than $32.00\%_{\circ}$ in the southwestern part of Cheju Island and the southern part of the South Sea of Korea during June-October and SLA(Sea level Anomaly) was 10-11cm. Salinity of the southeastern part was higher than those of the southwestern part and SLA was 12~13cm because of the influence of Tsushima Current.

  • During the traditional periods when there were exchanges among Korea, China and Japan based on ocean currents or seasonal winds, the southwestern coastal areas including Yeosu held an important position since the route would not have been complete without them. Armed with its advantages including the marine environment, the Yeosu area in the southwestern coast on the Korean Peninsula engage in active maritime exchanges and activities as a base along the sea route since the Neolithic or Bronze Age. It was the same later when Baekje and Gaya had exchanges with China and Japan, when Unified Silla had exchanges with China, and when Goryeo had exchanges with China and Japan. In Joseon, the Yeosu area gained fame as a marine defense base. In short, the Yeosu area in the southwestern coast on the Korean Peninsula during the traditional periods not only engage in active maritime exchanges and activities, but also serve as an important base that could not be left out in the maritime history of East Asia.

완도 연안 낭장망에 채집된 어류 군집구조의 12년 전후 변화 (Change of Structure Community of Fish Collected by a Gape Net with Wings after 12 Years in the Coast of Wando Island, Korea)

  • Our aim was to compare the community structure of fish in the coast of Wando Island between 2001 and 2013. Using a gape net with wings, we collected 61 taxa, wherein the most dominant species was Engraulis japonicus. The sea temperature in the middle layer of the survey station in 2001 (after June) was obviously higher than that in 2013, which was < $20^{\circ}C$. Except for Thryssa kammalensis in 2013, the log transformed individuals of seven dominant species, selected using a SIMPER (similarity-percentages procedure) analysis, decreased. Decreases in the individuals of Gobiidae spp., the warm-water species Trichiurus japonicus and Conger myriaster, and the migratory species Syngnathus schlegeli, Setipinna taty and Sardinella zunasi, which arrive in the southern coastal waters of Korea during summer-autumn, could be due to decreasing sea temperature in 2013. Thus, fish species diversity, estimated from rarefaction and k-dominance curves, declined in the coastal waters of Wando Island from 2001 to 2013, resulting in a significant difference in fish community structure.
