남한의 체감 무더위의 기후학 (The Climatology of Perceived Sultriness in South Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 지난 26년간 (1973~1998) 기온과 상대습도에서 산출한 열지수(Heat Index)를 분석하여, 남한에서 발생한 생리기후적 체감 무더위의 시.공간적 분포 특징을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 공간적으로, 중서부 내륙지방, 남서부 내륙지방, 남동부 내륙 지방을 중심으로 주요 생리기후 임계치 이상을 기록한 무더위가 빈번하게 발생하였다. 특히, 남동부 내륙의 밀양 지역은 타 지역에 비해 보다 빈번하게 장기간에 걸친 높은 열지수를 기록하여 남한에서 가장 무더운 생리기후적 극서지임이 밝혀졌다. 시간적으로, 1990년대에 접어들어 대부분의 연구지역에서 각 생리임계치 이상을 기록한 무더위의 발생빈도가 많이 증가하였다. 특히, 1994년은 연구기간 중 각 생리임계치 이상의 무더위 발생빈도가 남한 전 지역에 걸쳐 가장 높게 나타난 해였다. 보편적으로 일년 중 40.6$^{\circ}C$ 이상의 열지수를 나타내는 강한 무더위는 주로 여름장마가 끝나는 7월 말에서 1-2일간의 작은 강수가 시작되는 8월 초순 사이에 발생하였다. 이러한 남한의 무더위 발생의 시.공간적 분포 패턴은 대규모의 기단의 움직임뿐만 아니라 국지적인 지형, 위도, 해발고도, 수체 또는 도시화, 산업화. 조림사업 등의 자연적 인위적 기후 인자의 영향을 받아 지역마다 다양하게 나타났다.

Recent Development in Multi-national Marine Ecosystem Surveys along the Antarctic Peninsula

  • From an ecological point of view, the western part of the Atlantic sector is one of the most productive areas in the Southern Ocean. Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and krill-dependent predators such as fish, seals, and birds are abundant there, and most krill fisheries have operated in this area since 1970s. The hottest issues for the proper management of krill resources nowadays are to determine total biomass in this area, and to identify environmental forces controlling stock fluctuation. This paper reviews and collates information on ongoing oceanographic activities in the Antarctic Peninsula region concerning these issues. To delineate the status and function of Antarctic krill population in Antarctic marine ecosystems, multinational researches along the Antarctic Peninsula area have been developing recently. Four member states of CCAMLR (Japan, Russia, UK, and USA) had conducted acoustic surveys in January-February 2000 (socalled CCAMLR-2000 survey), and krill standing stock at 120 kHz was estimated to be 44.29 million metric tonnes in the western Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. On the other hand, the Southern Ocean GLOBEC (SO-GLOBEC) Programme has prepared a serial winter survey to examine the factors that govern krill survivorship and distribution in relation to shelf circulation processes. Ship-based surveys using ice-breakers are being conducted by three nations (Germany, UK, and USA) around the Marguerite Bay during the austral fall and winter 2001 and 2002. In addition to these two large-scale surveys, some CCAMLR members have carried out joint oceanographic surveys near the South Shetland Islands to detect ecosystem changes since 1994. Especially from December 1999 to February 2000, in conjunction with CCAMLR-2000 survey, four nations (Japan, Korea, Peru, and USA) conducted acoustic surveys to produce time-series information on krill distribution and biomass near the South Shetland areas. Though the aims of each program and the approach to solve the scientific questions were different each other, the results from each program fill the gaps between programs. Further cooperation and exchange in these activities could be beneficial to each program.

호안 건설 후 광양만 조간대 퇴적물의 퇴적학적 특성 (Sedimentologic Characteristics of Tidal Flat Sediments after the Construction of Sea Dyke in Kwangyang Bay, South Coast of Korea)

  • 광양만에서 호안 건설 후 조간대 퇴적물의 분포 및 변화를 조사하기 위하여 표층 퇴적물의 조직 특성과 퇴적률에 대한 모니터링을 실시하였다. 퇴적물의 평균 입도는 가을에 조립하고 겨울, 봄, 여름으로 갈수록 세립해지며, 여름에는 초기에 일시적으로 조립한 후 세립해지는 계절적 변화를 보였다. 퇴적률은 봄에 퇴적되고 여름과 가을에 주로 침식되어 호안이 건설퇴기 이전인 2001-2003년 동안 관측한 결과와 매우 비슷한 양상을 보였다. 그러나 연평균 퇴적률은 북측 조간대에서는 2001-2003년 동안 관측한 결과와 유사한 경향을 보였으나, 주변에 호안이 건설된 서측 조간대는 퇴적 환경에서 침식 환경으로 변화된 양상을 보였다. 이와 같은 퇴적 환경의 변화는 아마도 호안 건설에 따른 수류의 변형에 기인하는 것으로 판단된다.

益山郡 彌勒寺址의 堆積層에 對한 花紛分析的 硏究 (Palynological study of the alluvial vally plain deposits from the miruksa site, iksan-gun, korean)

  • Pollen analysis to clear vegetational history of korea was carried out on the deposite taken from the pit of the miruksa site, south-western korea(36o00'18'N, 127o1'12'E, 10m in alt.). This area has been known as the cool temperate zone(southern zone) according to yim and kira(1975). But, now we can not found the original vegetation because the area has been disturbed severely and almost area changed to cultivated land.the area is one of the most developd area in early agricultural stage of korea. By the pollen diagram, three local pollen zones are distinguished in this site, bottom to surface, as following. is-Ⅰ :pinus-quercus zone (140∼120 cm, sample 1 and 2) is-Ⅱ :ulmus+zelkova zone(120∼84 cm, sample 3∼6) is-Ⅲ :pinus zone(84∼0 cm, sample 7 ∼13) is-Ⅰ is characterized by high values in frequences of pinus, the temperate conifer and quercus the cool temperate oak, and is-Ⅱ zone by the decrease of quercus and increase of ulmus and increase of ulman+zelkova as ravine forest elements, isⅢ zone is characterized by pinus, especially, based on data of sample no.9.

서남부지역 수자원의 효율적 이용방안 (A Practical Research for More Efficient Utilization of Water Resources in the South-Western Part of Korea)

  • The south-western part of Korea is situated in an unbalance of water supply and demand relating to the Keum, Mankyung, Dongjin and Youngsan River and their estuary reservoirs. For example, the Keum River estuary reservoir is discharging the larger amount of yearly runoff into the sea due to the small storage capacity, while Saemankeum estuary reservoir which is under construction, has the smaller runoff amount comparing with its storage capacity, And the downstream area of the Youngsan River, such as Youngkwang, Youngam are deficient in water due in larger demand and smaller supply. In order to solve the above unbalanced water supply and demand and also to improve the water use efficiency, the Hierarchical Operation Model for Multi-reservoir System(HOMMS) has been developed and applied to analyze the multi-reservoir operation assuming that the above reservoirs were linked each other. The result of this study shows that 2,148MCM of annual additional water requirement for agricultural and rural water demands are required in this region at 2011 of target year, and these demands can be resolved by diverting and reusing 1,913MCM of the released water from the estuary reservoirs into the sea.

Paeonol accelerates skin wound healing by regulating macrophage polarization and inflammation in diabetic rats

  • Diabetic ulcer is usually seen in people with uncontrolled blood sugar. Reportedly, many factors such as impaired glucose metabolism, and macrovascular and microvascular diseases caused angiogenesis disorders and delayed the healing of diabetic ulcers, thus affecting the body's metabolism, nutrition, and immune function. This study aimed to explore the effect of paeonol on skin wound healing in diabetic rats and the related mechanism. A rat model of diabetic ulcer was established. High glucose-treated mouse skin fibroblasts were co-cultured with M1 or M2-polarized macrophages treated with or without paeonol. H&E and Masson staining were used to reveal inflammatory cell infiltration and collagen deposition, respectively. Immunohistochemistry visualized the expression of Ki67, CD31, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Western blot was used to detect interleukin (IL)-1β, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-4, IL-10, CD31, VEGFA, and collagen I/III. The expression of iNOS and arginase 1 was revealed by immunofluorescence staining. Paeonol treatment augmented collagen deposition and the expression of Ki67, CD31, VEGF, and macrophage M2 polarization markers (IL-4 and IL-10) and reduced wound area, inflammatory cell infiltration, and macrophage M1 polarization markers (IL-1β and TNF-α) in the ulcerated area. In vitro, paeonol treatment promoted M2-polarization and repressed M1-polarization in macrophages, thereby improving the repair of cell damage induced by high glucose. Paeonol accelerates the healing of diabetic ulcers by promoting M2 macrophage polarization and inhibiting M1 macrophage polarization.

약침의 한방의료행위성에 대한 검토 (Legal Issues on Pharmacopunture)

  • 약침행위는 한방의료에서 행하여져 오던 침구요법과 약물요법을 결합한 요법으로 최근에 특히 교통사고 환자를 중심으로 한방의료에서 행하여져 오고 있다. 하지만 약침행위에 사용되는 약제가 무엇인지도 분명하지 않으며 약침행위가 어떠한 효능을 가지고 있으며 어떠한 부작용의 위험이 있는지에 대해서도 거의 알려진 바가 없다. 우리나라에서는 양방의료와 한방의료를 구분하여 규율하고 있으며 양자의 규율방식 또한 상이하다. 특히 새로운 의료기술이 개발된 경우 엄격한 임상시험절차를 거쳐 정당한 의료행위로 허가되는 양방의료의 경우와는 달리 한방의료는 그와 같은 절차가 존재하지 아니한다. 한편 <의료법>상 무면허 의료행위는 의료면허가 없는 자가 의료행위를 하는 경우 뿐만 아니라 의료면허가 있는 의료인이 자신의 면허영역 이외의 의료행위를 하는 경우도 포함하고 있다. 따라서 양방의료와 한방의료의 경계가 무엇인가에 대한 논의는 매우 중요한 논의 중 하나이다. 의료행위가 면허에 의하여 허가되며 보호받는 이유 중 가장 큰 것은 의료행위 자체가 가지고 있는 인간의 생명 신체에 대한 침해 가능성 때문이다. 새로운 의료행위가 출현한 경우, 그것이 양방의료의 영역이건 한방의료의 영역이건 정당화의 근거로 인간의 생명 신체에 대한 위험성을 항상 고려하여야 한다. 현재 이루어지는 약침행위는 아직 그러한 검증을 거치지 아니한 것으로 판단된다.

An Unusual Coastal Environment and Cochlodinium polykrikoides Blooms in 1995 in the South Sea of Korea

  • Cochlodinium polykrikoides bloom in 1995 was studied with a focus on an unusual coastal environment in the South Sea of Korea. Data on temperature, salinity, and zooplankton biomass during 1965-1998 and nutrients during 1990-1998 and chlorophyll-a during 1995-1998 were used in this study. These data were obtained from the serial oceanographic observations in Korean waters carried out by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. In 1995 the C. polykrikoides bloom began in the coastal area around Narodo Island in August and consequently occurred to the whole coastal area of the South and East Seas of Korea. During June-October 1995, the coastal environment was unusual compared with the long-term means during 1965-1998. In June 1995, sea surface temperature was 1-2$^{\circ}C$ warmer than in other years in all coastal areas, while salinity was high only to the east of Jeju Island. In August 1995, a strong coastal front appeared inshore of a line between Jeju and Tsushima Islands. In particular, a strong coastal front which showed the characteristics of upwelling front occurred in the coastal area around Narodo and Sorido Islands, not only because of a strong intrusion of the Tsushima Warm Current but also because of the upwelling of cold bottom water. Salinity was low in the neighboring waters of western side of Jeju Island. Nutrients and chlorophyll-a were high in the inshore area between Narodo and Sorido Islands in 1995 in contrast with the other years and areas. Zooplankton showed an unusually high abundance in the coastal area in October 1995. We conclude that the Tsushima Warm Current strongly influenced the South Sea of Korea in 1995 and created strong upwelling front bordering cold upwelled water in the coastal area around Narodo and Sorido Islands. It leads us that these physical structures introduce the favorable environment for the development of C. polykrikoides blooms. We suggest that C. polykrikoides has a bio-physical tolerance of high shear and stress and prefers frontal and upwelling relaxed areas as its habitat. We also find that nutrients were not supplied to the coastal area from the offshore where a low salinity water mass with high nutrients appeared around Jeju Island. Because the strong upwelling front protect the reach of offshore low saline water mass. The main source of nutrients was the upwelled water mass in the coastal area of Wando-Narodo-Sorido.

남서해안 신안군 무인도서의 하계 해조식생 (Summer Marine Algal Vegetation of Uninhabited Islands in Sinangun, Southwestern Coast)

  • The objective of this study was to clarify marine algal flora and community structure of 16 uninhabited islands in Sinangun area, south western coast of Korea. As a result, a total of 63 species - 11 greens, 16 browns and 36 reds - was identified. The functional groups of marine algal species were filamentous 14.3%, foliose 20.5%, corticated 45.3%, leathery 13.7%, and articulated calcareous algae 6.2%. The (R+C)/P value was calculated as 2.9 showed temperate flora. The result of DCA showed that 16 uninhabitated islands tend to be distributed eastern and western parts. The dominant species was Ulva pertusa, while the subdominats were Gelidium divaricatum, Myelophycus simplex. The vertical distribution pattern of intertidal marine algae represented three distinct zones; Gloiopeltis furcata, Myelophycus simplex, Gelidium divaricatum - Ulva pertusa, Enteromorpha spp., Ishige okamurae - Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Symphyocladia latiuscula.

Oxygen Isotope Data of Winter Water in the Western Weddell Sea: Preliminary Results

  • In the western Weddell Sea, winter mixed layer is characterized by near-freezing temperature and higher salinity due to brine injection through sea-ice formation. This layer becomes Winter Water being capped by warmer and less saline Antarctic Surface Water during the sea-ice melt-ing season. In this study, Winter Water was preliminarily identified by the oxygen isotopic com-positions. The ${\delta}^{18}$O values of Winter Water show the progressively increasing trend from south to north in the study area. It presumably reflects the enhanced mixing with Antarctic Surface Water due to the extent of influence by low S'"0 value of sea-ice/glacier meltwater. Correlations between salinity and 6'"0 values of seawater can be used to more generally characterize Winter Water with a view to identification. However, the prediction on the degree of mixing from these relationships needs more detailed isotope data, although this study allows the oxygen isotopic composition of seawater as a tracer to identify the water mass.
