  • In order to understand the water masses and their distribution in the eastern Yellow Sea from winter to spring, a cluster analysis was applied to the temperature and salinity data of Korea Oceanographic Data Center from 1970 to 1990. From December to April, Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW) dominates the eastern Yellow Sea, whereas Eastern Yellow Sea Mixed Water (MW) and Yellow Sea Warm Water (YSWW) are found in the southern part of the eastern Yellow Sea. MW appears at the frontal region around $34^{\circ}N$ between YSCW in the north and YSWW in the south. On the other hand, Tshushima Warm Water (TWW) is found around Jeju Island and the South Sea of Korea. These water masses are relatively well-mixed throughout the water column due to the winter monsoon. However, the water column begins to be stratified in spring due to increased solar heating, the diminishing winds and fresh water discharge, and the water masses in June may be separated into surface, intermediate and bottom layers of the water column. YSWW advances northwestward from December to February and retreats southeastward from February to April. This suggests a periodic movement of water masses in the southern part of the eastern Yellow Sea from winter to spring. YSWW may continue to move eastward with the prevailing eastward current to the South Sea from April to June. Also, the front relaxes in June, but the mixed water advances to the north, increasing salinity. The salinity is also higher in the nearshore region than offshore. This indicates an influx of oceanic water to the north in the nearshore region of the eastern Yellow Sea in spring in the form of mixed water.

  • Thanks to the fact that the 1953 Korea Armistice Agreement does not have any clear provisions on the sea demarcation line, the North Korea insists that the sea demarcation line in the Yellow Sea Area should not be the NLL designated by the Commander in Chief. UN Command, unilaterally, but the hypothetical extention of the Latitude Parallel from the end of the provincial boundary line between Whanghae-do and Kyongki-do In those unique situations at the end of the Korean War, the cease-fire line on the part of the western sea area, a logically indispensable element of the contents of an armistice agreement, however has formed and crystallized by the act of the UN Command designating the NLL. In implementing the South-North Korean Basic Relations Agreement, a fair and clear common consent on the sea demarcation line in the western sea area should be deliberated.

  • This study aims to face common threats from the depletion of fish resources, the decline of production and employment as well as the increase of life risk in East Sea Rim countries, North Korea, South Korea, Japan and Russia due to the Chinese fishing fleets entering East Sea. The recent competition in fishing among fishing vessels and fleets of national origin operating in the East Sea has induced a significant change in the ecological landscape of the fishing fleets cluster while having influenced production and employment in the fishing industries of South Korea and Japan as well as life threat on the fishermen in North Korea. It seems that the population organizational ecological theory can be applied to this change. It can be seen as the isomorphism of the selection process over the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) to avoid the environment in which these North Korean fishing vessels are pushed against the Chinese fleet in the North Korean part of the East Sea. To resolve the fishery disputes or conflict in the common waters in East Sea, first of all, Chinese fishing fleets will be required to put international pressure so as to solve the unfairness of the illegal fishing and overfishing by the International Fishery Organization or the UN violations of the sanctions against North Korea selling fishing rights to China. Although it is not easy for South Korea to cooperate with North Korea in the short term, South Korea will be able to support the fishery infrastructure in North Korea in the mid- to the long-term to prevent the loss of innocent lives for their fishermen and to raise their incomes.

  • In order to understand the spatial and temporal variations of nutrients and factors controlling their distribution in Gwangyang Bay, this study was carried out bimonthly from June 2001 to July 2003, Inorganic silicate and nitrate concentrations ranged from $0.04{\mu}M\;to\;69.5{\mu}M(avg.\;12.9{\mu}M)$, and from $0.12{\mu}M\;to\;42.2{\mu}M\;(avg.\;7.83{\mu}M)$, respectively. Silicate concentrations measured just after the typhoon were the highest with an average of $43.2{\mu}M$ at the surface layer in June 2001, whereas the highest nitrate concentration $(avg.\;37.0{\mu}M)$ was observed in the surface layer in July 2003. River runoff apparently influenced variations in silicate and nitrate concentrations (r=0.701 and 0.728, p<0.000, respectively) as well as salinity (r=-0.628, p<0.000). Phosphate concentrations ranged from $0.24{\mu}M\;to\;5.70{\mu}M\;(avg.\;1.34{\mu}M)$ and were highest at stations 5, 6, and 7, near a fertilizer plant with an average of $2.01{\mu}M$. On the basis of N/P and Si/N molar ratios, limiting nutrients have varied temporary and spatially. During 2001-2002, nitrogen was a limiting nutrient in the study area, and Phosphate was limited when a large volume of freshwater flowed into the bay. Silicate was limited when the high standing crops of phytoplankton occurred in the whole study area throughout 2003, and in the inner bay in February and August 2002. During the study period, factors controlling the distribution of nutrients might be summarized as follows; 1) inflow of freshwater by heavy rain accompanied by typhoons and frequent rainfall in summer, showing high concentrations of silicate and nitrate, 2) release of high phosphate concentrations from the fertilizer plant located in the south of Moydo to adjacent stations, 3) release of nutrients from bottom sediment, 4) magnitude of occurrence of phytoplankton standing crops.

  • Acoustic technologies are commonly used to estimate biomass and distribution of fisheries resources in coastal areas and the open ocean. The pelagic species of Engraulis japonica, Scomber japonicus and Sardinops melanosticta spawn migrate to the southern part of the Sea of Korea and capture of these three species comprise 50% of the total abundance in Korean waters. Since 1970, anchovy landings have increased to 0.2 million tons in 1990, 0.27 million tons in 2001, and 0.25 million tons in 2003. Acoustic surveys were conducted on 24-26, May and 20-21, June 2005 around the Tongyeong, Geojae, and Namhae anchovy fishing ground using a dual beam echo sounder (DT-5000, 200 kHz Biosonics). Using this approach, information was obtained on the distribution (depth and position) of zooplankton, and adult and juvenile anchovy. We calculated and compared anchovy biomass using simple summation and geostatistic methods to assess the advantages and constraints of the two techniques.

  • We investigated the distribution and species composition of zooplankton in relation to hydrographical characteristics in the Korea Strait during the winter (February) and summer (July) of 2009. Satellite images of sea surface temperatures and in situ CTD data showed that the southeastern water zone (St3-5) off Jeju Island was strongly influenced by the Tsushima Current during both the winter and summer, whereas the Changjiang Diluted Water, characterized as water with relatively low salinity, was evident in the coastal waters of Jeju Island during the summer. During winter, zooplankton abundance was significantly higher than in the summer, with dominance by copepods, ostracods, siphonophorans, appendicularians, and nauplii. In both seasons, copepods represented >70% of the total zooplankton population. Calanus sinicus, a large calanoid copepod, was dominant in near the coast, and that may be associated with the intrusion of low salinity water (i.e., the Changjiang Diluted Water) along the coast. The abundance of P. parvus s.l. and A. omorii, known as neritic copepods, was mainly associated with the Korea Southern Coastal Water. Foraminiferans, Ostracods, O. plumifera, and P. aculeatus were concentrated in the southeastern water off Jeju Island during both seasons; showing their association with the Tsushima Current, which is characterized warm, high salinity water. Our results suggest that the distribution, abundance, and species composition of zooplankton are highly influenced by different water masses in the Korea Strait.

  • The relationships among long-term climatic change in the southern part of the Korean peninsula, oceanic conditions of the South Sea, Korea, and winter catches of major small pelagic fishes were analyzed using 33 years of time-series data from 1971-2003. In the early 1990s, winter climatic conditions in the southern part of the Korean peninsula shifted to a warmer regime with higher air temperature, weaker wind speed, and lower relative humidity. Also, winter sea surface temperature (SST) became consistently higher in the South Sea. The annual catch of major small pelagic fishes in the South Sea increased dramatically in the mid 1990s, whereas the catch of total fishes decreased in the late 1980s. In particular, the winter catch started to increase markedly in the late 1980s, and has remained over 120,000 M/T since the late 1990s. Correlation analysis of the winter catch of major small pelagic fishes and environmental factors showed that catch was correlated with air temperature (r=0.468, P< 0.01), wind speed (r=-0.732, P< 0.01), relative humidity (r=-0.73l, P< 0.01), and SST (r=0.672, P< 0.01). Multiple regression analysis between the winter catch of major small pelagic fishes (Y) and environmental factors (X) resulted in the equation: $Y=-0.017-0.217\;X_3-0.486\;X_4+0.325\;X_5(R^2=0.754,\;P<0.000)$.
