In modern power systems, high penetration of distributed generators (DGs) results in high stress on system stability. Apart from the intermittent nature of DGs, most DGs do not contribute inertia or damping to systems. As a result, a new control method named virtual synchronous machine (VSM) was proposed, which brought new characteristics to inverters such as synchronous machines (SMs). In addition, different active power droop controls for VSMs are being proposed in literatures. However, they are quite different in terms of their dynamic characteristics despite of the similar control laws. In this paper, mathematical models of a VSM adopting different active power droop controls are built and analyzed. The dynamic performance of the VSM output active power and virtual rotor angular frequency are presented for different models. The influences of the damping factor and droop coefficient on the VSM dynamic behaviors are also investigated in detail. Finally, the theoretical analysis is verified by simulations and experimental results.
In modern power systems, distributed generators (DGs) result in high stress on system frequency stability. Apart from the intermittent nature of DGs, most DGs do not contribute inertia or damping to systems. As a result, a new control method referred to as a virtual synchronous machine (VSM) has been proposed, which brought new characteristics to inverters such as synchronous machines (SM). DGs employing an energy storage system (ESS) provide inertia and damping through VSM control. Meanwhile, energy storage presents some physical constraints in the VSM implementation level. In this paper, a VSM mathematical model is built and analyzed. The dynamic responses of the output active power are presented when a step change in the frequency occurs. The influences of the inertia constant, damping factor and operating point on the ESS volume margins are investigated. In addition, physical constraints are proposed based on these analyses. The proposed physical constraints are simulated using PSCAD/EMTDC software and tested through RTDS experiment. Both simulation and RTDS test results verify the analysis.

Silicon oxynitride films were deposited using ammonia as a nitrogen source via PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) to study the physical properties of the films. Silane and nitrous oxide were used as silicon and oxygen sources, respectively. The composition of the silicon oxynitride films was well controlled by changing the ratios of the sources and confirmed by XPS. The silicon oxynitride films with high oxygen content showed bigger compressive stress and less refractive index, while the values of surface roughness were around 1 nm, irrespective of the variation of the source ratios.

Process simulation requires accurate and reliable data for a wide variety of material properties, ranging from thermal conductivity to flow stress curves. Traditionally such data are gathered from experimental sources, which has significant disadvantages in that not all of the required data is readily available, it may be from various sources that are themselves inconsistent, measurement of high temperature properties is expensive, and furthermore the properties can be sensitive to microstructure as well as to alloy composition. This article describes the development of a new multi-platform software program called JMatPro, which is based on CALPHAD methodology, for calculating the properties and behavior of multi-component alloys. A feature of the JMatPro is that the calculations are based on sound physical principles rather than purely statistical methods. Thus, many of the shortcomings of methods such as regression analysis can be overcome.

Vibration of a rotor-bearing system driven by an electric motor is a coupled phenomenon between mechanical characteristics and magnetic origins through the air-gap. With the advent of new high-energy magnets together with high precision motor applications, magnetic sources of vibration are becoming more serious. This paper investigates the transient whirl responses of a rotor system with purely mechanical origins and compares it with that of magnetically coupled origins. A perturbation method is applied to model the magnetic field associated with rotor eccentricity. Electromagnetic forces are obtained by the Maxwell stress method, which utilizes the analytical expression of radial flux density distribution. The FEM was applied to a rotor-motor system to illustrate magnetically coupled effects in rotor dynamics. Results show that magnetically coupled sources significantly affect the vibration of the rotor-motor system.
The present investigation deals with the thermomechanical interactions in an orthotropic thermoelastic homogeneous body in the context of fractional order theory of thermoelasticity due to time harmonic sources. The application of a time harmonic concentrated and distributed sources has been considered to show the utility of the solution obtained. Assuming the disturbances to be harmonically time dependent, the expressions for displacement components, stress components and temperature change are derived in frequency domain. Numerical inversion technique has been used to determine the results in physical domain. The effect of frequency on various components has been depicted through graphs.
The present research deals with the time-harmonic deformation in transversely isotropic magneto thermoelastic solid with two temperature (2T), rotation due to inclined load and laser pulse. Generalized theory of thermoelasticity has been formulated for this mathematical model. The entire thermo-elastic medium is rotating with uniform angular velocity and subjected to thermally insulated and isothermal boundaries. The inclined load is supposed to be a linear combination of a normal load and a tangential load. The Fourier transform techniques have been used to find the solution to the problem. The displacement components, stress components, and conductive temperature distribution with the horizontal distance are computed in the transformed domain and further calculated in the physical domain using numerical inversion techniques. The effect of angle of inclination of normal and tangential load for Green Lindsay Model and time-harmonic source for Lord Shulman model is depicted graphically on the resulting quantities.
With increasing interest in flexible electronic devices and wearable appliances, flexible lithium ion batteries are the most attractive candidates for flexible energy sources. During the last decade, many different kinds of flexible batteries have been reported. Although research of flexible lithium ion batteries is in its earlier stages, we have found that developing components that satisfy performance conditions under external deformation stress is a critical key to the success of flexible energy sources. Among the major components of the lithium ion battery, electrodes, which are connected to the current collectors, are gaining the most attention owing to their rigid and brittle character. In this mini review, we discuss candidate materials for current collectors and the previous strategies implemented for flexible electrode fabrication.

Oxidative stress is prerequisite for the development of atherosclerosis. Apart from the traditional risk factors that contribute to this devastating condition, in the past few decades, much attention has been focused on plasma total homocysteine mainly because of its strong association with coronary artery disease. It has been suggested that homocysteine induces oxidative stress and hence the present work was undertaken to assess the total homocysteine status and plasma total antioxidant capacity in the acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients among Tamil population. The study subjects included only the Tamil population. Blood samples were collected from 100 AMI patients and 100 controls. Plasma was separated and the total antioxidant status was assessed as a measure of ferric reducing power of antioxidants using spectrophotometric method. Plasma total homocysteine concentrations were assessed by automated chemiluminescence method. While Total antioxidant status was significantly decreased, the plasma homocysteine concentrations were elevated in AMI patients compared to the controls. However, there was no correlation between the homocysteine levels and total antioxidant status. The findings of this study may have therapeutic implications, including food sources rich in antioxidants for all AMI patients to minimize the effect of free radicals formed during oxidative stress among Tamil population.

Railway wheels and axles are the most critical parts of the railway rolling stock. The wheel carry axle loads and guide the vehicles on the track. Therefore, the contact surface of wheel are subjected to wear and fatigue process. The wheel damage can be divided into three types; wear, contact fatigue failure and thermal crack due to braking. Therefore, in the contact surface between the wheel and the rail, the materials are heat treated to have a specific hardness. The manufacturing quality of the wheel have a considerable influence on the formation of tread wear and damage. Also, the residual stress on wheel is formed during the manufacturing process is one of the main sources of the damage. In this paper, the mechanical characteristic and the residual stress according to wheel material have been evaluated by applying finite element analysis and conducting mechanical tests.
