In an electrical tomographic survey using an inclined borehole with a pole-dipole array, we must consider several factors: a singular point associated with zero potential difference, a spatial discrepancy between electrode and nodal point in a model due to a inclined borehole, and a variation of geometric factors in connection with a irregular topography. Singular points which are represented by the normal distance from current source to the ground surface can be represented by serveral regions due to a irregular topography of ground surface. The method of element division can be applied to the region in which the borehole is curved, inclined or the distance between the electrodes is shorter than that of nodal points, because the coordinate of each electrode cannot be assigned directly to the nodal point if several electrodes are in an element. Test on a three-dimensional (3-D) synthetic model produces good images of conductive target and shoves stable convergence.

The source and source/dipole distribution methods using 3-dimensional panel method have been widely used for ship motion analysis. When these methods are used, large errors in the predicted hydrodynamic coefficients are introduced around the irregular frequencies caused by the resonance of imaginary internal flow. Therefore, the irregular frequencies need to be removed for an accurate prediction of ship motion. This paper adopts 3-dimensional translating and oscillating Green function derived by Wu. The adaptive integration method, stretching transform and stationary phase method are used for the calculation of the calculation of Green function and the integral equation is derived by distributing the Green function n ship surface and inner free-surface. The condition of zero normal velocity, that is, wall condition on inner free-surface has been successfully used for the removal of irregular frequencies in oscillating problems. The calculations are carried out for series 60($C_B=0.7$) vessel and the results are compared with those of other theoretical analyses and experiment.

We present a high frequency electromagnetic (EM) inversion scheme for detecting and characterizing a fracture using single-hole data. At high frequencies, say above tens of mega-hertz, since displacement currents cannot be ignored, electrical permittivity as well as electrical conductivity is to be considered together for analyzing the EM scattering data. In this paper, we have developed a three-step inversion scheme to map the fracture and to evaluate its electrical conductivity and permittivity. We performed EM profiling along the z-axis using three-component receivers for each source. The model was excited by a vertical magnetic dipole and the resistant magnetic fields were inverted using the non-linear least-squares method. Background resistivity and permittivity were easily obtained using vertical magnetic fields below 1 MHz and above 10 MHz, respectively. Both the vertical and dipping sheets were successfully mapped using the phase difference between 40 and 41 MHz. The electrical property of the sheet was well resolved using the information obtained in the previous two steps and secondary magnetic fields. Our study shows the potential of imaging the fracture in single-hole survey environment using the high frequency EM method.
General algorithm is developed for the prediction of internal flow-induced noise. This algorithm is based on the integral formula derived by using the General Green Function, Lighthill's acoustic analogy and Curl's extension of Lighthill's. Novel approach of this algorithm is that the integral formula is so arranged as to predict frequency-domain acoustic signal at any location in a duct by using unsteady flow data in space and time, which can be provided by the Computational Fluid Dynamics Techniques. This semi-analytic model is applied to the prediction of internal aerodynamic noise from a throttle valve in an automotive engine. The predicted noise levels from the throttle valve are compared with actual measurements. This illustrative computation shows that the current method penn its generalized predictions of flow noise generated by bluff bodies and turbulence in flow ducts.
The effect of diffusing substrate and pillow lenses on the outcoupling efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) was studied by optical simulation based on the point-dipole model. The diffusing substrate included Mie scatterers by which the condition of total internal reflection could be broken. The finite-difference time-domain method was used to obtain the intensity distribution on the transparent electrode of an OLED, which was used as a light source to carry out a ray-tracing simulation of the OLED and the diffusing substrate. It was found that the outcoupling efficiency of the OLED was sensitive to the thickness of organic layers and could be increased by 21.0% by adopting a diffusing substrate in which Mie scatterers whose radius was $2.0{\mu}m$ were included at the density of $10^7mm^{-3}$ and by 65.5% by forming one pillow lens with the radius of 2 mm on the front surface of the glass substrate. This study revealed that the outcoupling efficiency could be improved by adopting diffusing substrate and pillow lenses along with the optimization of the thickness of each layer in the OLED.
A computationally efficient inversion scheme has been developed using the extended Born or localized nonlinear approximation to analyze electromagnetic fields obtained in a single-hole environment. The medium is assumed to be cylindrically symmetric about the borehole, and to maintain the symmetry vertical magnetic dipole source is used throughout. The efficiency and robustness of an inversion scheme is very much dependent on the proper use of Lagrange multiplier, which is often provided manually to achieve desired convergence. In this study, an automatic Lagrange multiplier selection scheme has been developed to enhance the utility of the inversion scheme in handling field data. The inversion scheme has been tested using synthetic data to show its stability and effectiveness.

In this paper, elastic responses of a floating structure in waves with a breakwater are presented. The method of source-dipole distribution is used to analyze the velocity potentials for the fluid region. The deflections of structure are expanded approximately in terms of natural mode functions of free-free beam. The model for present calculation is a floating plate with an length of 1000m and the hydroelastic responses for a floating structure with a straight breakwater are shown. The effects of distance between breakwater and structure, bending rigidity and relative length of regular waves are examined.

In recent years, modularization of engine parts has increased the application of plastic products in air intake systems. Plastic intake manifolds provide many advantages including reduced weight, contracted cost, and lower intake air temperatures. These manifolds, however, have some weakness when compared with customary aluminium intake manifolds, in that they have low sound transmission loss because of their lower material density. This low transmission loss of plastic intake manifolds causes several problems related to flow noise, especially when the throttle is opened quickly. The physical processes, responsible for this flow noise, include turbulent fluid motion and relative motion of the throttle to the airflow. The former is generated by high-speed airflow in the splits between the throttle valve and the inner-surface of the throttle body and surge-tank, which can be categorized into the quadrupole source. The latter induces the unsteady force on the flow, which can be classified into the dipole source. In this paper, the mechanism of noise generation from the turbulence is only investigated as a preliminary study. Stochastic noise source synthesis method is adopted for the analysis of turbulence-induced, i.e. quadrupole noise by throttle at quick opening state. The method consists of three procedures. The first step corresponds to the preliminary time-averaged Navier-Stokes computation with a $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model providing mean flow field characteristics. The second step is the synthesis of time-dependent turbulent velocity field associated with quadrupole noise sources. The final step is devoted to the determination of acoustic source terms associated with turbulent velocity. For the first step, we used market available analysis tools such as STAR-CD, the trade names of fluid analysis tools available on the market. The steady state flows at three open angle of throttle valve, i.e. 20, 35 and 60 degree, are numerically analyzed. Then, time-dependent turbulent velocity fields are produced by using the stochastic model and the flow analysis results. Using this turbulent velocity field, the turbulence-originated noise sources, i.e. the self-noise and shear-noise sources are synthesized. Based on these numerical results, it is found that the origin of the turbulent flow and noise might be attributed to the process of formulation and the interaction of two vortex lines formed in the downstream of the throttle valve. These vortex lines are produced by the non-uniform splits between the throttle valve and inner cylinder surface. Based on the analysis, we present the low-noise design of the inner geometry of throttle body.

The broadband and discrete sources of sound in small cooling fans of propeller type and centrifugal type were investigated to understand the turbulent vortex structures from many bladed fans using ANSI test plenum for small air-moving devices (AMDs). The noise measurement method uses the plenum as a test apparatus to determine the acoustic source spectral density function at each operating conditions similar to real engineering applications based on acoustic similarity laws. The characteristics of fans including the head rise vs. volumetric flow rate performance were measured using a performance test facility. The sound power spectrum is decomposed into two non-dimensional functions: an acoustic source spectral distribution function F(St,.phi.) and an acoustic system response function G(He,.phi.) where St, He, and .phi. are the Strouhal number, the Helmholtz number, and the volumetric flow rate coefficient, respectively. The autospectra of radiated noise measurements for the fan operating at several volumetric flow rates,.phi., are analyzed using acoustical similarity. The rotating stall in the small propeller fan with a bell-mouth guided is mainly due to a leading edge separation. It creates a blockage in the passage and the reduction in the flow rate. The sound power levels with respect to the rotational speeds were measured to reveal the mechanisms of stall and/or surge for different loading conditions and geometries, for example, fans installed with a impinging plate. Lee and Meecham (1993) studied the effect of the large-scale motions like impinging normally on a flat plate using Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) and Lighthill's analogy.[ASME Winter Annual Meeting 1993, 93-WA/NCA-22]. The dipole and quadrupole sources in the fans tested are shown closely related to the vortex structures involved using cross-correlations of the hot-wire and microphone signals.
To find out the anomalous zone in cut slope composed of phyllite and shist, we performed resistivity tomography using a pole-dipole way. The electrical distribution that propagates from a current source in lower part of slope is measured by a potential electrode in upper part of slope. Apparent resistivity data are inverted with an iterative regularized inversion method to reconstruct 3D resistivity image. By comparing with the resistivity images in relation to each section, the images of anomalous zone correspond to their positions represented in cut slope. Therefore, the application of resistivity tomography in cut slope is useful to recognize the extension of anomalous zone.
