  • Just noticeable differences (jnds) of autocorrelation function (ACF) parameters - Phi (0), Tau 1 and Phi 1 - of household refrigerator noise were investigated by psychoacoustical analyses. Phi (0) of five refrigerators' noise was changed with equal (${\pm}$) interval level of 0.5-1.0 dB up to five intervals by manipulating sound pressure level of the noise. Tau 1 and Phi 1 were varied with equal (${\pm}$) interval of around 0.10 ms and 0.02, respectively. Pitch shifting and strengthen methods were applied for the Tau 1 and Phi 1 variations. As results of subjective evaluations, about 2.0 dB was shown as jnd of Phi (0). The values of 0.30 ms and 0.06 were found as jnds of Tau 1 and Phi 1, respectively. The jnd results of each ACF parameter can be applied to explain substantial amount of sound quality (SQ) enhancement in the SQ prediction indices which were proposed in the authors' previous study [Sato et al. (2007) J. Acoust. Soc. Am.].

  • This study is concerned with the temperature dependence characteristics of ultrasound parameters in biological tissues, which are basic on the noninvasive deep body temperature estimation. Used parameters are ultrasonic attenuation coefficient and sound velocity In order to accomplishment our purpose, several signal processing methods were used. Attenua4iorl coefficient was estimated by spectral difference method and sound velocity was estimated by P-P method. And we also examined these methods through a series of IN VITRO experi mentis that used tissue-mimicking phantom samples and biological tissue samples. In order to imitate the biological soft tissue two kinds of phantom samples are used, one is agar phantom sample which is composed of agar, graphite, N-propyl alcohol and distilled water, and the other is fat phantom sample which is composed of pure animal fat. And the ultrasound transmission mode and reflection mode experiments are performed on the pig's spleen, kidney and fat. As a result, it is found that the temperature characteristics are uniform in case of phan- tom samples but not in biological tissues because of complicate wave propagation within them. Consequently, the possibility of temperature measurement using ultrasound on biological tissue is confirmed and its results may contribute to the establishment of reference values of internal temperature measurement of biological tissues.

  • In order to obtain the basic data concerning the optimal parameters in using Nd:YAG laser as a therapeutic modality to dentinal hypersensitivity, the author prepared 3 sections of sound dentin and 10 sections of sclerotic dentin with thickness of $0.5mm{\pm}0.1mm$ from human extracted teeth of anteriors and premolars, and applied the laser energy from a fiberoptic delivered, free running, pulsed Nd:YAG laser (wavelength 1064nm, pulse duration $120{\mu}sec$, fiber diameter $320{\mu}m$) to surfaces of sound and sclerotic dentin sections for 1 second with contact/unidirectional moving mode of the fiber under speed of 3mm~4mm/sec and parameters of 0.5W/10Hz, 1.0W/10Hz, 1.5W/10Hz, 2.0W/10Hz: $62J/cm^2$, $124J/cm^2$, $187J/cm^2$, $249J/cm^2$. The author comparatively evaluated the characteristics of ultrastructural changes on surfaces of sound and sclerotic dentin sections irradiated by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser using the scanning electron microscopy. A fairly ill-defined bordered surface of partially closed and melted dentinal tubules can be seen on the scanning electron microscopic feature of the sound dentin surface irradiated by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser with energy density of $62J/cm^2$. The physical modification of sound dentin surface extensively occurred depended on the increase of energy density from $62J/cm^2$ to $124J/cm^2$, $187J/cm^2$, $249J/cm^2$. While, a fairly well-defined bordered surface of partially closed and melted dentinal tubules with thickened peritubular dentin can be seen on the scanning electron microscopic feature of the sclerotic dentin surface irradiated by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser with energy density of $62J/cm^2$. The physical modification of sclerotic dentin surface of a fairly rough, shallow depression with many cracks, thickened peritubular dentin and structureless dentinal tubules extensively occurred depended on the increase of energy density from $62J/cm^2$ to $124J/cm^2$, $187J/cm^2$, $249J/cm^2$ compared to those of sound dentin surface irradiated by the pulsed Nd:YAG laser under the same parameters. Therefore, it is recommended that the pulsed Nd:YAG laser as a therapeutic modality to dentinal hypersensitivity should be applied with the less energy density than $62J/cm^2$ on the sound dentin surface, and its energy density on the partially sclerotic dentin surface should be lower than that on the sound dentin surface to preserve tooth from unnecessary excessive structural destruction.

  • Gear transmission system is widely applied in engineering. As the problem of contact fatigue, wear, lubrication failure etc, the condition of gear teeth contacts will be worse. The vibration and sound signals in the gear system will be affected by the some failures like scuffing, abrasive wear and spalling due to the deterioration of gear teeth surface. By studying the estimation of specific film thickness, measurement of reduction in tooth thickness, visual examination of wear mechanisms on the gear teeth and their effects on the statistical parameters of vibration and sound signals, the research obtained the satisfactory results on accessing the surface fatigue wear in a spur gear system. The paper utilizes the relationship between statistical parameters obtained from sound signals and Stribeck curve to confirm the hypothesis of dependency of surface fatigue wear, specific film thickness.

  • This paper presents the psychoacoustic analyses on the vehicle interior, noise generated when accelerating. Following the objective quantification for vehicle noises of different classes, the subjective decision process by the jury test is adopted to interrelate these results based on two different approaches. In particular, the paired comparison method is employed in assessing the sound quality in terms of the quietness, the powerfulness, and the pleasantness of the human auditory sensation. Special attention is paid to the physical interpretation of psychoacoutic parameters and their interrelation to the subjective assessment scores. In order to ensure the integrity of statistics of the survey, various tests are performed. The results show that the consistency of the "quiet" sensation is far higher than that of the "powerful" and the "pleasant" sensations. Also, it is found that the most significant parameter determining these feelings turns out to be the inherent loudness of the noise instead of the conventional indicators such as the weighted sound pressure level. It may be concluded that the psychoacoustic analysis offers more realistic evaluation for vehicle noise and assists the improvement of NVH more efficiently.ement of NVH more efficiently.

  • The noise generated from a treadband mechanism of a tire has been the subject of this research. In particular, the treadband has been treated as an infinite tensioned beam resting on an elastic foundation which includes damping. The main objective is to predict the sound power generated from a system mentioned above by locating harmonic point forces representing the excitation of treadband at the contact patch. It is possible to predict the sound power radiated from this structure by using wavenumber transformation techniques. In order to find out the minimum radiated sound power, All parameters were varied. Thus, this model can be used as a tire design guide for selecting parameters which produces the minimum noise radiation.

  • This paper describes an algorithm that calculates Absolute Sound Level (ASL) for contents platform. ASL is a single volume representing individual sound sources and is a concept designed to integrate and utilize the sound level units in digital sound source and physical domain from a speaker in practical areas. For this concept to be used in content platforms and others, it is necessary to automatically derive the ASL without having to go through a hearing of mastering engineers. The key parameters of which a person recognizes the representative sound level of an individual single sound source are the areas of "frequency, maximum energy, energy variation coefficient, and perceived energy distribution," and the ASL was calculated through the normalizing of the weights.

  • The sound quality characteristics of refrigerator noise in an anechoic chamber and in a real living environment for 30 models of refrigerators were investigated. Subjective evaluation experiments were conducted to determine subjective tolerance level for refrigerator noise. Refrigerator noise was played from a loudspeaker at the position normally occupied by a refrigerator in a real living environment. A nine-point scale was used to measure subjective satisfaction of the sound pressure levels for refrigerator noise. Point 3 on the scale corresponded to a sound pressure level of about 30 dB(A). Seventy percent of the participants were satisfied with this level of refrigerator noise. A semantic differential test was also conducted to evaluate the sound quality of refrigerator noise. From the results of correlation and multiple regression analyses on the psychoacoustical parameters and subjective evaluations of 30 refrigerators, sound quality indices which predict the subjective rating score were proposed.

  • Complaints against high-speed train interior noise have been increasing as a number of high-speed train passenger grows bigger. It is very difficult to analyze characteristics of high-speed train interior noise using sound pressure level only. It is requested to consider how the public response change for each high-speed train interior noise. This study presents evaluation of the sound quality for interior noise of KTX-II using Zwicker parameters. Characteristic of loudness and sharpness is different between noise samples depending on operation condition. The noise sample that recorded when the high-speed train passed through tunnel section is more louder and sharper.

  • This study is aimed to evaluate a tunneling effect in the laboratory measurement of sound transmission loss. Based on the formulation for sound transmission loss of a finite panel in the presence of tunnel, variations of the sound transmission loss with the parameters of panel location and tunnel depth are investigated. In comparison with the transmission loss of a finite plate in an infinite rigid baffle, the maximum difference occurs in the laboratory measurement when the panel is placed at the center of the tunnel, while a better estimation of true transmission loss is obtained when the panel is located at either end.
