  • Railroad noise is one of the main causes of environmental impact. Whenever a new railroad line is planned or a housing project near an existing railroad is proposed, an estimate of the relevant noise levels is usually required. For this, it is necessary to quantify those parameters that affect the railroad noise. This paper deals with an estimation of railroad noise by the barrier and deck plate of the bridge.

  • This paper sums up the study of the soundproof facilities to be placed on the test track section within the Seoul-Pusan H.S.T project. The objective of this study is to determine optimum design of soundproof including height, length, location, sound absorbing materials for test track(chonan-taejon). This paper shows the model to design the shape and materials of noise barrier for high speed trains(TGV, ICE, etc). Noise prediction is to be conducted by MITHRA. Various parameters affecting the noise propagation outdoors are surveyed and discussed in relation to H.S.T. noise.

  • It is addressed that the turbulent broadband sound power from a sirocco fan can be modeled by the trailing edge noise. The trailing edge noise is usually influenced by inflow turbulence, separation, and boundary layer on the blade. The design parameters such as solidity(c/s) and stagger angle are specified to predict performance and noise level because the separation and slip velocity are strong1y affected by them along with the flow coefficient. • This study investigated how the location of sound absorptive materials and sound diffusers affects the acoustic performance of small auditoriums. It was conducted for a standard model established with the averaged dimension of 36 auditoriums which had opened since 2000 in Daehak-ro, Seoul. In this study, the installation area of finishing materials was calculated upon a back wall which had the smallest installation effective area of finishing materials. To analyze the changes of acoustic performance according to installation location of finishing materials, experiments were carried out using the 1/10 down scale models for 8 cases which were made by classifying the installation location of ceiling and side wall into the front, middle and rear part. The used acoustic parameters were reverberation time (RT), early decay time (EDT), clarity (C80), definition (D50) and speech transmission index (STI). In result, the index related to the amount of reverberant sound (RT, EDT) showed the great changes when evaluating it through just noticeable difference (JND), but the one related to clarity (C80, D50, STI) hardly indicated the changes. In case to obtain short reverberation time, it was most effective to control reverberation time through the side walls when installing sound absorptive and diffusive materials, and side wall front was the location which could get the shortest reverberation time.

  • Since the 1990's, European shipbuilding industries introduced hybrid welding process in order to decrease thermal distortion of welded joints in passenger shipbuilding. In this study, we investigated effects of hybrid welding parameters on the toughness of weld metal using DH36 steel in order to obtain more sound welds in passenger shipbuilding. Type of leading process, joint gap distance and chemical composition of consumables were considerably correlated with the toughness of weld metal. Especially, the toughness was considerably increased with high-Ti containing consumables. In addition, hybrid welding speed increased by using plasma cut edges, the oxides layer of which increased absorption efficiency of laser beam.

  • Aeroacoustic sound induced from inter-couch spacing is an important contributor to interior noise generation for high speed trains. Especially the open space between mud-flap has significant impact from flow-structure interactions. To understand noise generation mechanism, experiments were performed using the wind tunnel. To find mud-flap parameters for minimal noise generations the various shape of the mud-flap was installed and its effects on the wall-pressure generation were investigated.

  • This paper is concerned with a analysis of noise by inverse problem available for analyzing the two and three-dimensional acoustic field problems. The noise of analysis considered in this study can be reduced to an optimum problem to find the optimal set of parameters defining the vibrating state of noise source surfaces. The optimal set of parameters are searched by the standard optimization procedure minimizing the square sum of the residuals between the measured and computed quantities of sound pressure at some points in the acoustic field. Computation is carried out for typical examples in which the noise sources are located on the infinite plane. It is demonstrated that the noise of analysis can be effectively made by using the sensitive reference data.

  • Mechanical properties of in-service facilities are required to evaluate the integrity of power plants and chemical plants. Non-destructive technique can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties. To investigate the mechanical properties using ultrasonic technique, the four classes of thermally aged specimens were prepared using an artificially accelerated aging method. Ultrasonic tests, tensile tests, fracture toughness tests, and hardness tests were performed for the specimens. Then the mechanical properties were compared with ultrasonic parameters such as attenuation and non-linear parameter. From the investigation, we confirm that the ultrasonic parameter can be used to evaluate the mechanical properties.

  • The teach pendant and keyboard have been used as an input device of control command in human-robot sustem. But, many problems occur in case that the usef is a novice. So, speech recognition system is required to communicate between a human and the robot. In this study, Korean voice commands, eitht robot commands, and ten digits based on the broad phonetic analysis are described. Applying broad phonetic analysis, phonemes of voice commands are divided into phoneme groups, such as plosive, fricative, affricative, nasal, and glide sound, having similar features. And then, the feature parameters and their ranges to detect phoneme groups are found by minimax method. Classification rules are consisted of combination of the feature parameters, such as zero corssing rate(ZCR), log engery(LE), up and down(UD), formant frequency, and their ranges. Voice commands were recognized by the classification rules. The recognition rate was over 90 percent in this experiment. Also, this experiment showed that the recognition rate about digits was better than that about robot commands.

  • The cross-flow fans have been widely used to constitute the air moving systems in many air-ventilating and air-conditioning devices. The cross-flow fan system has many design parameters which have crucial influence on the performance and the noise characteristics of the devices. As a result, there are many difficulties in the design stage of the devices and the general design guide has not been sufficiently established yet. This study presents the experimental results of the parametric investigation of some chosen design parameters, which are the shape of the stabilizer, the profile of the scroll casing, and the diffusion angle of the flow exit. The results are expressed as the fan performance and the specific sound pressure level characteristic. These parts have been found to have crucial effects on the system performance/noise characteristics and should be considered with care in the design stage.
