  • In the present study, polyacetal bone mimics with circular cylindrical pores were used to investigate variations of speed of sound and attenuation coefficient with porosity and microarchitecture in bone. The speed of sound and attenuation coefficient of the 6 bone mimics with porosities from 0 % to 65.9 % were measured by a through-transmission method in water, using a pair of broadband, unfocused transducers with a diameter of 12.7 mm and a center frequency of 1.0 MHz. Independently of the structural properties of the bone mimics, the speed of sound decreased almost linearly with the increasing porosity. The attenuation coefficient measured at 1.0 MHz exhibited linear or nonlinear correlations with the porosity, depending on the structural properties of the bone mimics. These results are consistent with those previously published by other researchers using bone samples and mimics, and advances our understanding of the relationships of the ultrasonic parameters for the diagnosis of osteoporosis with the bone density and microarchitecture in human bones.

  • This paper describes acoustic phonetic parameters for detecting nasal place in a knowledge-based speech recognition system. Initial acoustic phonetic parameters are selected by studying nasal production mechanisms which are radiation of the sound through the nasal cavity. Nasals are produced with differing articulatory configuration which can be classified by measuring acoustic phonetic parameters such as band energy ratio, band energy differences, formants and formant differences. These acoustic phonetic parameters were tested in a classification experiment among labial nasal, alveolar nasal and velar nasal. An overall classification rate of 57.5% is obtained using the proposed acoustic phonetic parameters on the TIMIT database.

  • Quantitative ultrasound technologies for osteoporosis diagnosis measure ultrasonic parameters such as speed of sound(SOS) and normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation(nBUA) in the calcaneus (heel bone). In the present study, the dependences of SOS and nBUA on bone mineral density in the proximal femur with high risk of fracture were investigated by using 20 trabecular bone samples extracted from bovine femurs. SOS and nBUA in the femoral trabecular bone samples were measured by using a transverse transmission method with one matched pair of ultrasonic transducers with a center frequency of 1.0 MHz. SOS and nBUA measured in the 20 trabecular bone samples exhibited high Pearson's correlation coefficients (r) of r = 0.83 and 0.72 with apparent bone density, respectively. The multiple regression analysis with SOS and nBUA as independent variables and apparent bone density as a dependent variable showed that the correlation coefficient r = 0.85 of the multiple linear regression model was higher than those of the simple linear regression model with either parameter SOS or nBUA as an independent variable. These high linear correlations between the ultrasonic parameters and the bone density suggest that the ultrasonic parameters measured in the femur can be useful for predicting the femoral bone mineral density.

  • The noise pattern of a household refrigerator is dependent on the characteristics of its operating cycle which is repeated with a specific pattern depending on various parameters, such as room temperature and performance of its mechanical parts. Analysis of noise pattern is essential prior to evaluation of sound quality of a refrigerator. In this study, 14 units of refrigerator were classified into 4 types according to noise pattern and sort of mechanical part, which helps to analyze characteristics of refrigerator noise. Sound quality metrics(loudness, sharpness, roughness, and fluctuation strength) were calculated to compare noise pattern of the 4 types of refrigerator. The results of this study can be useful to decide noise performance of refrigerator.

  • The identification of a moving noise source is important in reducing the source power of the transport systems such as airplanes or high speed trains. However, the direct measurement using a microphone running with noise source is usually difficult due to wind noise, white the source motion distorts the frequency characteristics of the pass-by sound measured at a fixed point. In this study the relationship between the spectra of the source and the pass-by sound signal is analyzed for an acoustic source moving at a constant velocity. Spectrum of the sound signal measured at a fixed point has an integral relationship with the source spectrum. Nevertheless direct conversion of the measured spectrum to the source spectrum is ill-posed due to the singularity of the integral kernel. Alternatively a differential equation approach is proposed, where the source characteristics can be recovered by solving a differential equation relating the source signal to the distorted measurement in time domain. The parameters such as the source speed and the time origin, required beforehand, are also determined only from the frequency-phase relationship using an auxiliary measurement. With the help of the regularization method, the source signal is successfully recovered. The effects of the parameter errors to the estimated frequency characteristics of the source are investigated through numerical simulations.

  • Recently the trend of automobile industry is that IQS evaluation index against a sensitivity quality is increasing. To reduce rattle noise due to speaker sound at low frequencies, it is required the advanced investigation of a package tray panel and a door module panel. This paper optimized the design parameters of package tray panel according to the theoretical background about robust design and suggested the design guideline for resonance avoidance and the reduction of vibrational sensitivity considering the excitation frequency of woofer speaker. In addition, it is suggested the design guideline of a door module panel through the sensitivity analysis in case of the speaker excitation. Finally, the design factor analysis of the quality deviation of a mother-car will make it possible to guarantee the stable characteristics of vehicle vibration in the early stage of vehicle development. These improvements can lead to shortening the time needed to develop better vehicles.

  • Correlations between acoustic properties and bone density have been investigated in bovine cancellous bone. Speed of sound (SOS), broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA), and broadband ultrasonic reflection (BUR) were measured in 10 defatted bovine cancellous bone specimens in vitro. SOS showed a significant correlation with the apparent density of the bone. A comparable correlation was observed between BUA and the apparent density. BUR was rather highly correlated with the apparent density. It was shown that BUR had a weak correlation with BUA and a significant correlation with SOS. This indicates that the parameter BUR can provide important information that may not be contained in BUA and SOS and, therefore, can be useful as an alternative diagnostic parameter of osteoporosis. As expected, a linear combination of all three ultrasonic parameters in a multiple regression model resulted in a significant improvement in predicting the apparent bone density.

  • Acoustic characteristics of a sound absorbing material can be identified, if the characteristic impedance and propagation constants are known, which have generally been determined experimentally. One easy method determining these two essential parameters is to measure the one dimensional wave characteristics in the impedance tube. In th udy, the effects of backing conditions on the impedance tube measurement have been examined using several pairs of generally used end conditions. The results showed that the measured values are similar for most pairs of end conditions: however, it was observed that the measured characteristic impedance for different thickness did not agree well for some pairs. In this work, the multi termination method, using three or more known backing con ns, was suggested to reduce such random errors, which are mostly caused by the test procedure. Employing three terminations as a set, comprised of a rigid end, an end with porous material, and an end with a backing cavity, it was demonstrated that improved measured results could be obtained for an open cell PU foam varying widely with three different thicknesses.

  • The losses at off-design points from a compressor cascade occur due to the deviation from a design incidence angle at the inlet of the cascade. The self-noise from the blade cascade at off-design points comes from a separated boundary layer and vortex sheddings. If the incidence angle to the cascade increases, stalling in blades may occur and the noise level increases significantly. This study applied Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) using deductive and deductive dynamic SGS models to low Mach-number, turbulent flow with each incidence angle to the cascade ranging from -40$^{\circ}$ to +20$^{\circ}$ and compared numerical predictions with measured data. It was observed that the oscillating separation bubbles attached to the suction surface do not modify wake flows dynamically for cases of negative incidence angles. However, an incidence angle greater than 8$^{\circ}$ caused a separated vortex near the leading edge to be shed downstream and created stalling. The computed performance parameters such as drag coefficient and total pressure loss coefficient showed good agreement with experimental results. Noise from the cascade of the compressor is summarized as sound generated by a structure interacting with unsteady, turbulent flows. The hybrid method using acoustic analogy was observed to closely predict the measured overall sound powers and directivity patterns at design and off-design points of blade cascade.
