  • It is said that the goal of the design of good acoustical environment is at first the reduction of undesirable sounds, and in addition the introduction of desirable sounds by which our minds are soothed. The task of creating the desirable sounds leads to the realization of a comfortable acoustic environment and the design of soundscape. It may be an important starting point of soundscape design to select suitable sounds for the target spaces, because each space has a different surrounding condition and requires a special ambient sound. This paper aims to survey preference of the environmental sounds suitable for the public spaces in urban areas such as parks, bus terminals. 35 kinds of natural sounds are rated by 26 pairs of adjectives. The results of psycho-acoustic experiments are as follows. 1. The proper adjectives for expressing the environmental sounds are classified into 6 groups of comfort, pleasure, fullness, variety, distinctness, naturalness. 2. Bird singing, murmuring of a stream, artificial sounds, singing of insects and animals are the affirmative order of preference. 3. Green musics consisted of music and natural sounds are preferred to the pure natural sounds. 4. Sound level relative to background noise causes various preferences to natural sounds in public spaces.

  • The task of introducing sounds leads to the realization of a comfortable acoustic environment and the design of good soundscape. This paper aims to rate the preference of environmental sounds suitable to the public spaces such as park, garden, bus terminal, urban street. And aims to search for the methodology how to select the introducing sounds by subjective and objective procedures. Seventeen kinds of introducing sounds were rated by nine adjectives in the presence of visual site informations. Also adequate sound levels were calculated by adjusting the volume of introducing sounds in the presence of the background sounds and visual informations. The results of psycho-acoustic experiments are as follows. 1. Proposal of various introducing sounds were evaluated to be possible at the rather calm natural park. 2. The introducing sounds which have opposite visual image or already existing at the place were evaluated not adequate to the sound circumstances of the place. 3. By the sounds with the same meaning, the identity of the street and the improvement of sound circumstance can be obtained.

  • This study presents a new fashion wearable product, a classical music stage costume design, using an Arduino LilyPad that can control light-emitting diodes(LEDs) and a sound sensor that can set an environmental range of LED light. As a theoretical background, LED fashion design research and stage costume design research status were reviewed, and Arduino LilyPads, sensors, LEDs, and batteries required for LED stage costume production were investigated. Based on prior research, the LED stage costume design for the soprano stage was presented in a three-step process of design planning, development, and production, and an actual prototype was produced. This process produced meaningful information and materials for making clothes with the added function of a wearable computer. In particular, fashion designers or fashion majors can easily access the Arduino LillyPad and use not only LEDs, but other light emitting materials. It is expected that it will be used as a basic material for the use of the Arduino LillyPad that can develop new creations that have been utilized.

  • A front-end cooling fan is designed and tested in the present study. The design technique is developed using the one-dimensional inviscid flow through the fan blade, the empirical equations, and the experimental correlations. Design data for the blade can be obtained for a given flow rate and a pressure rise. A parabolic function is used to generate a sweep of the fan. Characteristics of the blade geometry are discussed between the huh and the tip. The fan is tested in the fan test unit. The measured volume flow rate at the operating point is in good agreement with that of the design specifications. Sound pressure levels of the noise are predicted with the Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equations. Calculation results of the sound pressure level(SPL) 1m away from the fan are obtained and cpmpared with the measured data.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the optimal mix design of the sound absorption material that is made from perlite and various binder systems for noise barrier wall. The polymer cement slurry which is made from two types of polymer dispersions, and silicone type inorganic material are used as binder. The test specimens are prepared with various polymer cement ratios, binder ratios, and tested for strengths, freezing and thawing and sound absorption performance by the tube and the reverberation room methods. From the test results, the difference of sound absorption coefficient by the tube method is a little recognized, however, noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of test specimens bound by the polymer cement slurry is in the ranges of 0.48 to 0.51. They are a little higher than those bound by cement only, and are lower values than recommended value of 0.7 by the Ministry of Environment. However, the sound absorption coefficient of test specimens at low frequency range of 250 to 500 Hz by reverberation room method shows very high values as 0.84 to 1.00, and 0.57 to 0.77 at the high frequency. The test specimens with polymer cement slurry binder have a good balance between performance and cost, and have proper properties in strengths, freezing and thawing resistance as sound absorption material for noise barrier wall. It is apparent that the good sound absorption material can be produced according to the optimum mix design that is recommended from this study.

  • Recently, the form of education has changed from one-way to two-way and mutual exchange rather than the existing one-way order form, and accordingly, it is necessary to consider creating a suitable learning environment for each type of education. The basic form of education consists of the delivery of knowledge, that is, the delivery of knowledge by teachers to education consumers through voice delivery, so the sound environment is considered an essential factor in creating a pleasant learning environment. The indoor sound environment is very closely related to the mental stress of the inmate, so the quality level of education will also change greatly depending on whether or not the appropriate sound environment is created. However, the importance of the sound environment in educational facilities such as classrooms has not been highlighted due to the lack of research and related laws on the sound environment. Therefore, in this study, auditory tests were conducted using the auralization based on the physical acoustic performance data presented in the preceding study. Through this, we wanted to verify the validity of this research by analyzing the subjective acoustic performance satisfaction of the occupants due to the improvement of the physical acoustic performance. Based on these research results, it is estimated that the improvement of the sound environment of educational facilities through remodeling in the future will be possible to verify whether the sound environment suitable for educational facilities is created only after the analysis stage on the improvement of subjective sound performance as well as physical sound performance.

  • This study aims to define the basic design elements of a sonic interactive object and relate them with the different metaphor types including physical metaphor, gestural metaphor, sound metaphor, and embodied metaphor that are reflected on the interface, gesture, sound, and embodied experience. It discusses how the concept mapping can be effectively done by utilizing metaphor and considering the relationships between the types of metaphor when designing a sonic interactive object. This study has a significance in the aspect that it expanded the area of metaphor to embodied experience and subdivided the types of metaphor including visual, sound, gestural and tactile information. Furthermore, it attempted to analyze the design elements of a sonic interactive object in relation to the types of metaphor. A researcher or a designer, therefore, can use this study as a reference to design concept mapping of a sonic interactive object, in a way that the design elements and metaphor types work together effectively to enable a visitor to recognize what they are expected to do with the object more intuitively.

  • In this paper, we develop a method to design a flexible thin film audio systems utilizing Polyvinylidene fluoride. The system we designed showed the properties of increased transparency and sound pressure levels. As an input terminal transparent oxide thin film is adopted. In order to provide dielectric insulation, a transparent insulating oxide thin film is coated to obtain double -layered structure. In the range of visible light, the output from the output of the system showed an increased and improved sound pressure level. The piezoelectric polymer film of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is used to produce mechanical vibration due to the applied electrical voltage signal. An analog electric voltage signal is transformed into sound waves in the audio system.

  • One of the widely accepted methods for evaluating the interior sound quality of automobiles is Articulation Index(AI). The AI actually measures the articulation level of the sound in the vehicle cabin as passengers talk to one another. In this study, the effect of two different absorption materials inside the cabin on AI has been investigated by ray-tracing method : one is firewall, the other is celling. It turns out that the back seat location is found to be strongly dependent on the type of absorption materials treated at the celling, since the sound absorbing area is different due to the location and the firewall is situated in the "Reverberation Radius". The proposed methdo could be used to improve the sound quality of automobiles at the design stge.sign stge.

  • The received signal of a mobile phone is normally sensed through two independent means which are the sound generation of a speaker and vibration generation of a vibration motor. As an improvement scheme to meet the consumer's demand on weight reduction and miniaturization of a mobile phone, the design and development of an integrated vibration and sound generating device are performed in this research. To this purpose, the optimal shapes of the voice coil. the permanent magnet and the vibration plate are designed, and the excitation force applied to the vibration system of the new device is estimated and verified through theoretical analyses, computer simulation, and experiments using an expanded model. In addition, vibration performance comparison of the device with the existing vibration motor is performed, and from the overall process, therefore, the method and procedure for the vibration performance analysis of the integrated vibration and sound generating device are established.
