  • The goal of this research is to compare the metal binding characteristics of an anoxic selector activated sludge system and a conventional activated sludge system. Metal biosorption by biomass harvested from experimental systems was determined by a series of batch experiments. Heavy metals studied in this research were zinc, cadmium, and nickel. The sorption isotherm showed that the selector sludge had significantly higher sorption capacity than did the control sludge. Metal biosorption behavior closely followed a Freundlich isotherm model for equilibrium concentrations. ECP contents of biomass estimated by alkali extraction technique showed that ECP levels in the selector sludge significantly higher than that in the sludge harvested from the conventional system, indicating that the higher metal sorption capacity of selector sludge may be due to the selection of the ECP-producing bacteria (i.e., Zoogloea sp.) by the selector system.

  • This study examined the adsorption effect of aromatic pesticides by hollow fiber NF membrane on rejection and removal properties. Batch type adsorption test and hollow fiber NF membrane filtration were conducted with 5 different kinds of aromatic pesticides. 3 to 15 days were required to reach the equilibrium concentration and $0.3181{\sim}0.8094{\mu}g/cm^2$ were adsorbed to hollow fiber NF membrane. Since 5 hours of separation test were too short to keep steady state for permeate due to the repetition of sorption and desorption, longer times were required to evaluate the rejection performance of NF membrane. Sorption and desorption were confirmed by the separation test equipped with membrane and without membrane. Adsorption contribution of aromatic pesticides to hollow fiber membranes were shown to be ranged from 16.1% to 36.3% and indicated the difference considering sorption effect.

  • Ultra-thin polymer films containing cobalt(II) meso-tetraphenylporphyrin(CoTPP) have been prepared by vacuum codeposition of the metal complex and trans-2-butene as an organic monomer using an inductively coupled RF glow discharge operating at 7-9 Watts. The polymer films were characterized by sorption measurements. Sorption data obtained for polymer films containing CoTPP indicate that the CoTPP molecules are capable of reversibly binding oxygen molecules. It was found that the adjacent CoTPP molecules in the aggregated metal complex phase could irreversibly share the oxygen molecules. A dispersion of the metal complex molecules in the polymer matrix was made to maintain the reversible reactivity of the metal complex molecules with oxygen in the polymer films via vacuum evaporation process. The Henry mode solubility constant, the Langmuir mode capacity constant, the amount of binding oxygen, and the dissociation equilibrium in the dual mode sorption theory were discussed.

  • The headspace method has been acknowledged as a cost-effective and convenient method to analyze volatile organic compounds(VOCs) in soil. The headspace analysis is based on equilibrium partitioning of VOCs among water, air and soil in a closed system. However, the headspace method cannot be applied to soils where most of the VOCs remain sorbed even at high temperature. In this study, it was investigated how the sorption characteristics of VOCs varied with soil with different organic carbon contents and temperature. This study showed that all the VOCs were volatilized, not sorved, only in the soil with 5% organic carbon at 45$^{\circ}C$ or higher. Some fraction of VOCs remained in soil with 8% organic carbon at $65^{\circ}C$ of higher. Most of the VOCs remained sorbed in soil with 12% organic content even at 95$^{\circ}C$. This result suggested that the headspace method can be applied only to soils with little organic carbon content (less than 5%). In this case, 45$^{\circ}C$ seems to be high enough to volatilize all the VOCs from soil. Large particles still showed a significant sorption capacity for VOCs from soil. Large Particles still showed a significant sorption capacity for VOCs despite of their low level of organic carbon content. It was also shown that the organic carbon sorption coefficients (Koc) of VOCs varied with soils with different organic carbon content. This suggests that not only the organic matter content of soil but also the property of the organic matter in soil influence the sorption of VOCs to soil.

  • This study is to investigate the possibility of using activated carbon prepared from Iraqi date-pits (ADP) which are produced from palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera L.) as low-cost reactive material in the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for treating lead (Pb+2) from the contaminated groundwater, and then compare the results experimentally with other common reactive materials such as commercial activated carbon (CAC), zeolite pellets (ZP). Factors influencing sorption such as contact time, initial pH of the solution, sorbent dosage, agitation speed, and initial lead concentration has been studied. Two isotherm models were used for the description of sorption data (Langmuir and Freundlich). The maximum lead sorption capacities were measured for ADP, CAC, and ZP and were found to be 24.5, 12.125, and 4.45 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic data were analyzed using various kinetic models particularly pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion. COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5a depend on finite element procedure was applied to formulate transmit of lead (Pb+2) in the two-dimensional numerical (2D) model under an equilibrium condition. The numerical solution shows that the contaminant plume is hindered by PRB.

  • Excessive phosphorus (P as orthophosphate) is one of the major pollutants in natural water that are responsible for algal blooms and eutrophication. P removal by slag is an attractive solution if the P sorption capacity of the slag is significant. To design an efficient land treatment facility, basic information on the behaviour of P in the media-water environment is required. In this study, detailed column experiments were conducted to study the P transport under dynamic condition, and mathematical models were developed to describe this process. The column experiments conducted with dust and cake waste products (slag) from BHP steel industry in Australia as adsorbing media indicated that they had higher sorption capacity of P than that of a sandy loam soil from North Sydney, Australia. P transport in the dust and cake columns exhibited characteristics S-shaped or curvilinear breakthrough curves. The simulated results from a dynamic physical non-equilibrium sorption model (DPNSM) and Freundlich isotherm constants satisfactorily matched the corresponding experimental breakthrough data. The mobility of P is restricted proportionally to the adsorbent's sorption capacity.

  • The equilibrium sorption of Orange II by silk fibroin in the range of 50$^{\circ}$, 70$^{\circ}$, 90$^{\circ}C$ and to pH 1.5, 2.2, and 4.0 have been discussed in the light of the dual sorption. Langmuir sorption constant K$\_$L/ and partition coefficient K$\_$P/ were decreased with the increase of the temperature and the pH for the dyeing of silk fibroin with Orange II. Positive values for adsorption entropy were observed. It was found that the values of $\Delta$H$^{\circ}$ is negative for dyeing conditions, and the dyestuff/fibre reaction is therefore exothermic.refore exothermic.

  • The moisture sorption isotherms of corn powder prepared from corn kernels roasted for 20 min at 160, 180, 200, 220, and $240^{\circ}C$ were determined at $20^{\circ}C$ using the static gravimetric method over the range of water activities ($a_w$) of 0.11~0.90. The moisture sorption isotherms showed a typical sigmoid shape, and the equilibrium moisture content tended to increase with increasing $a_w$, and increased sharply at above 0.75 $a_w$. At above 0.53 $a_w$, the equilibrium moisture content of the roasted corn powder increased with the increase in the roasting temperature. Six mathematical models (Bradley, Caurie, Halsey, Henderson, Kuhn, and Oswin) were used to fit the experimental data. The Oswin, Caurie, Henderson, and Halsey models were found to have suitability for describing the sorption curves, and the Oswin model was the best fit model for all the roasting temperatures. Concerning the monolayer moisture content, the Guggenheim-Anderson-Boer (GAB) equation showed high significance. The monolayer moisture content increased as the roasting temperature was increased, to 0.043 and 0.053 kg $H_2O/kg$ solids in the corn powder roasted at $180^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results suggest that the roasting temperatures of the corn kernels affected the moisture sorption characteristics ($20^{\circ}C$) of the corn powder.

  • Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctyl sulfonate (PFOS) is a new persistent organic pollutants of substantial environmental concern. This study investigated the potential of magnetic ion exchange resin (MIEX$^{(R)}$) as the adsorbent for the removal of PFOA and PFOS from Nakdong River water. In our batch experiments, we studied the effect of some parameters (pH, temperature, sulfate concentration) on the removal of PFOA and PFOS. The results of sorption kinetics on MIEX$^{(R)}$ show that it takes 90 min to reach equilibrium but the economical contact time and dosage were 30 min and 10 mL/L. An increase in pH (pH 6~10) leads to a decrease in PFOA (2.0%) and PFOS (3.6%) sorption on MIEX$^{(R)}$. The sorption of both PFOA and PFOS decreases with an increase in ionic strength for sulfate ion (${SO_4}^{2-}$), due to the competition phenomenon. An increase in water temperature ($8^{\circ}C{\sim}28^{\circ}C$) in water leads to a increase in PFOA (2.8%) and PFOS (4.3%) sorption on MIEX$^{(R)}$. Based on the sorption behaviors and characteristics of the adsorbents and adsorbates, ion exchange and hydrophobic interaction were deduced to be involved in the sorption, and hemi-micelles possibly formed in the intraparticle pores.

  • The goal of this study was to investigate moisture sorption characteristics of Lactobacillus brevis-fermented sea tangle Saccharina japonica, Mekabu fucoidan, and these mixture powders. Moisture sorption isotherms of powders were determined at 37℃ using the static gravimetric technique in a water activity (aw) range of 0.11-0.93. Equilibrium moisture content (Xeq) values of the fermented sea tangle powder were almost 3 times when aw<0.7 and increased upto almost 4 times when aw<0.9 higher than mekabu fucoidan powder. In these reason, to improve strong hygroscopic nature of the fermented sea tangle powder, fermented sea tangle and mekabu fucoidan powders were dissolved as ratios of 7:3, 5:5, and 3:7 (w/w) in a distilled water and then freeze dried. Xeq values of mixture powders were around average value of sum of both powders at all aw ranges. All moisture sorption isotherms of powders exhibited typical J-shaped type III. Xeq of mixture powders increased with increasing aw and decreased as increasing proportion of mekabu fucoidan powder. The Peleg model was found to accurately describe moisture sorption isotherms of powders. The results can be used to understand hygroscopic nature of powders, improve shelf life, and retain quality across postharvest processing.
