The Representative Interactive Flamelet (RIF) concept has been applied to numerically simulate the combustion processes and pollutant formation in the direct injection diesel engine. Due to the ability for interactively describing the transient behaviors of local flame structures with CFD solver, the RIF concept has the capabilities to predict the auto-ignition and subsequent flame propagation in the diesel engine combustion chamber as well as to effectively account for the detailed mechanisms of soot formation, NOx formation including thermal NO path, prompt and nitrous 70x formation, and reburning process. Special emphasis is given to the turbulent combustion model which properly accounts for vaporization effects on the mixture fraction fluctuations and the pdf model. The results of numerical modeling using the RIF concept are compared with experimental data and with numerical results of the commonly applied procedure which the low-temperature and high-temperature oxidation processes are represented by the Shell ignition model and the eddy dissipation model, respectively. Numerical results indicate that the RIF approach including the vaporization effect on turbulent spray combustion process successfully predicts the ignition delay time and location as well as the pollutant formation.
An integrated in-line oil monitoring detector assigned for continuous in situ monitoring multiple parameters of oil performance for predicting economically optimal oil change intervals and equipment condition control is presented in this study. The detector estimates oil deterioration based on the information about chemical degradation, total contamination, water content of oil and oil temperature. The oil oxidation is estimated by "chromatic ratio", total contamination is measured by the changes in optical intensity of oil in three optical wavebands ("Red", "Green" and "Blue") and water content is evaluated as Relative Saturation of oil by water. The detector is able to monitor oils with low light absorption (hydraulic, transformer, turbine, compressor and etc. oils) as well as oils with rather high light absorption in visible waveband (diesel and etc. oils). In a case study that the detector is applied to a diesel engine oil, it is found that the detector provides good results on oil chemical degradation as well as soot concentration.
Employing an after-treatment system has almost become a mandatory requirement for Diesel vehicles, which results from a reinforced exhaust regulations as the number of vehicles powered by a Diesel engine increases. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system is considered as one of the most efficient method to reduce particulate matter (PM); however, the improvement of a regeneration performance at any engine operation point presents a considerable challenge by itself. Temperature, gas composition and flow rate of exhaust gas are important parameters in DPF evaluation processes, especially during a regeneration process. Engine dynamometer and segment tester are generally used in DPF evaluation so far. These test methods, however, could not completely evaluate the effect of various parameters on real DPF, such as oxygen concentration, amount of soot and exhaust gas temperatures. The evaluation of DPF systems using a dump combustor has been verified experimentally and this dump combustor system is likely to be appropriate for the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) assessments test, too.

Exhaust gas recirculation is the well-known and widely used NOx reduction technology for diesel engines. More effective EGR cooler has been developed and applied to diesel engines to meet the reinforced emission regulation. However, the contaminated EGR cooler by diesel exhaust gas reduces the performance of the engine and NOx reduction rate. The buildup of deposits in EGR coolers cause significant degradation in heat transfer performance, often on the order of 20~30%. Deposits also increase pressure drop across coolers and thus may degrade engine efficiency under some operation conditions. In this study, as a solution for this problem, DOC assisted EGR cooler is designed and then investigated to reduce fouling and its impact on cooler performance. A single channel EGR cooler fouling test apparatus and soot particle generator were developed to represent the real EGR cooler and exhaust gas of diesel engine. EGR cooler effectiveness of the case with catalyst of pt 30g/ft3 decreased just up to 5%. This value was 45% less compared to the case without catalyst which decreased up to 9% after 10hours experiments.

A nonthermal plasma-assisted fuel reformer was developed and the effects of operating variables on the performance of this reformer were studied. The $H_2$-rich reformed gas from the reformer was injected into a diesel engine under an idle condition and the effects of the amount of injected gas on the NO and soot reduction were investigated. It was found that with increasing electric power consumption, the degree of facility of ignition of the reforming reaction in the reformer could be enhanced. The performance of the reformer including $H_2$ concentration, $H_2$ recovery, and energy conversion was affected only by the O/C mole ratio. This was because the equilibrium reaction temperature was governed by the O/C mole ratio. With increasing O/C mole ratio, the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion passed through the maximum values of 33.4% and 66%, respectively, at an O/C mole ratio between 1.2 and 1.5. The reason why the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion increased with increasing O/C mole ratio when the O/C mole ratio was lower than $1.2{\sim}1.5$ appeared to be that the complete oxidation reaction occurred more enough with increasing O/C mole ratio in this low O/C mole ratio range and accordingly the reaction temperature increased. Whereas the reason why the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion decreased with increasing O/C mole ratio when the O/C mole ratio was higher than $1.2{\sim}1.5$ appeared to be that the complete oxidation reaction was further advanced and the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion decreased. As the weight ratio of reformed diesel to total diesel which entered the diesel engine was increased to $18.2{\sim}23.5%$, NO and soot reduction efficiencies increased and reached as values high as 68.5% and 23.5%, respectively.
This study presents both experimental and numerical investigation of ignition delay time of n-heptane and n-butanol binary fuel. The $O_2$ concentration in the mixture was set to 9-10% to make high exhaust gas recirculation( EGR) rate condition which leads low NOx and soot emission. Experiments were performed using a rapid compression machine(RCM) at compressed pressure 20bar, several compressed temperature and three equivalence ratios(0.4, 1.0, 1.5). In addition, a numerical study on the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes to validate experimental results and predict chemical species in the combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing the n-butanol fraction due to a decrease of oxidation of n-heptane at the low temperature. Moreover, all of the binary fuel mixtures showed the combustion characteristics of n-heptane such as cool flame mode at low temperature and negative-temperature-coefficient(NTC) behavior. Due to the effect of high EGR rate condition, the operating region is reduced at lean condition and the ignition delay time sharply increased compared with no EGR condition.

Recently, as the fine dust is increased and the emission regulations of diesel engines have been tightened, interest in diesel soot filtration devices has rapidly increased. There is specifically a demand for the technological development of higher diesel exhaust gas after-treatment device efficiency. As part of this, many studies were conducted to increase exhaust gas treatment efficiency by improving the flow uniformity of the exhaust gas in the diesel particulate filter (DPF) and reducing the pressure drop between the inlet and the outlet of DPF. In this study, the effects of pressure drop by the flow rate and temperature of exhaust gas, DPF I/O ratio, Ash, and PM amount in diesel reduction device were simulated via a 12" diameter DPF and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) using ANSYS Fluent. As the flow rate and temperature decreased, the pressure drop decreased, whereas the PM amount affected the pressure drop more than the ash amount and the pressure drop was lower in anisotropic DPF than isotropic DPF. In the case of DPF flow uniformity, it was constant regardless of the various variables of DPF. In ESC and ETC conditions, the filtration efficiency for PM was similar regardless of anisotropic and isotropic DPF, but the filtration efficiency for PN (particle number) was higher in anisotropic DPF than isotropic DPF.

Due to its oxygen (O) content, biodiesel (BD) is advantageous in that it lowers PM emissions in CI engines. Therefore, BD is considered one of the best candidates for low temperature combustion (LTC) operation because its use can extend the regime for simultaneous reduction of PM and $NO_x$. Thus, in this study, LTC operation was realized using BD and diesel with a 5~7% $O_2$ fraction. Engine test results show that the use of BD increased the efficiency and reduced emissions such as PM, THC, and CO; furthermore, IMEP reduced by 10~12% owing to the lower LHV of the fuel. In particular, smoke was suppressed by up to 90% because O atoms in the BD enhanced the soot oxidation reaction. To compensate the IMEP loss, turbocharging (TC) was then tested, and the results showed that the power output increased and PM was reduced further. Moreover, TC in BD engine operation allowed a similar level of reduction in both $NO_x$ and PM at 11~12% $O_2$ fraction, suggesting that there is a potential to widen the operating range by the combination of TC and BD.

One of the effective ways to reduce both $NO_x$ and PM at the same time in a diesel CI engine is to operate the engine in low temperature combustion (LTC) regimes. In general, two strategies are used to realize the LTC operation-dilution controlled LTC and late injection LTC - and in this study, the former approach was used. In the dilution controlled regime, LTC is achieved by supplying a large amount of EGR to the cylinder. The significant EGR gas increases the heat capacity of in-cylinder charge mixture while decreasing oxygen concentration of the charge, activating low temperature oxidation reaction and lowering PM and $NO_x$ emissions. However, use of high EGR levels also deteriorates combustion efficiency and engine power output. Therefore, it is widely considered to use increased intake pressure as a way to resolve this issue. In this study, the effects of intake pressure variations on performance and emission characteristics of a single cylinder diesel engine operated in LTC regimes were examined. LTC operation was achieved in less than 8% $O_2$ concentration and thus a simultaneous reduction of both PM and $NO_x$ emission was confirmed. As intake pressure increased, combustion efficiency was improved so that THC and CO emissions were decreased. A shift of the peak Soot location was also observed to lower $O_2$ concentration while $NO_x$ levels were kept nearly zero. In addition, an elevation of intake pressure enhanced engine power output as well as indicated thermal efficiency in LTC regimes. All these results suggested that LTC operation range can be extended and emissions can be further reduced by adjusting intake pressure.
