An Efficient Search Strategy of Anti-Submarine Helicopter based on Multi-Static Operation in Furthest-On-Circles (확장형 탐색구역에서 Multi-Static 운용 기반 대잠헬기의 탐색에 관한 연구)

  • The anti-submarine helicopter is the most effective weapon system in anti-submarine warfare. Recently changes in the introduction of the anti-submarine warfare sonar system are expected to operate multi-static sonar equipment of the anti-submarine helicopter. Therefore, it is required to study the operational concept of multi-static of anti-submarine helicopter. This paper studies on the optimal search of multi-static based on anti-submarine helicopter considering Furthest On Circles(FOC). First, the deployment of the sensors of the anti-submarine helicopter is optimized using genetic algorithms. Then, the optimized model is extended to consider FOC. Finally, the proposed model is verified by comparing pattern-deployment the search method in Korean Navy.

Study on Unmanned Hybrid Unmanned Surface Vehicle and Unmanned Underwater Vehicle System

  • Underwater operating platforms face difficulties regarding power supply and communications. To overcome these difficulties, this study proposes a hybrid surface and underwater vehicle (HSUV) and presents the development of the platform, control algorithms, and results of field tests. The HSUV is capable of supplying reliable power to the unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) and obtaining data in real time by using a tether cable between the UUV and the unmanned surface vehicle (USV). The HSUV uses global positioning system (GPS) and ultra-short base line sensors to determine the relative location of the UUV. Way point (WP) and dynamic positioning (DP) algorithms were developed to enable the HSUV to perform unmanned exploration. After reaching the target point using the WP algorithm, the DP algorithm enables USV to maintain position while withstanding environmental disturbances. To ensure the navigation performance at sea, performance tests of GPS, attitude/heading reference system, and side scan sonar were conducted. Based on these results, manual operation, WP, and DP tests were conducted at sea. WP and DP test results and side scan sonar images during the sea trials are presented.

A Study on the Linear Array Beamforming by Cross Correlation Matrix (상호상관 행렬을 이용한 선배열 빔형성 기법 연구)

  • Passive sonar system forms the various beams in any desired directions to obtain the improvement in Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio, bearing detection and localization of targets, and the attenuation of interferences from other directions. The improvement of beamforming is very important to detect modern underwater targets as noise reduction technology leads to considerably low-level acoustic emissions in the long range in complex environmental sea. In this paper, we proposed the spatial cross correlation beamforming (SCCBF) algorithm using cross correlation matrix of individual hydrophone pairs of linear array sensors. By the theoretical analysis and simulation, the proposed SCCBF is demonstrated that its performances compared to conventional beamforming (CBF) output can be obtain above 3dB of array gain and about half of beam width represented the bearing accuracy in target detection. Also, this paper presents sea test result of linear passive sonar system that the proposed algorithm implemented.

  • In this paper, optimum design of energy-aware distributed detection is considered for a parallel sensor network system consisting of a fusion center and two passive sonar nodes. AND rule and OR rule are employed as the fusion rules of the sensor network. For the fusion rules, it is shown that a threshold rule of each sensor node has uniformly most powerful properties. Optimum threshold for each sensor is investigated that maximizes the probability of detection under a constraint on energy consumption due to false alarms. It is also investigated through numerical experiments how signal strength, an energy constraint, and the distance between two sensor nodes affect the system detection performances.

An Efficient Separable Weighting Method for Sonar Systems with Non-Separable Planar Arrays (소나시스템 비분리 평면센서배열의 효율적인 분리 가중치 기법)

  • When a beamforming can be processed separately in horizontal and vertical directions with the planar arrays used in sonar systems, there are several merits such as that practically reduce the required computations and volumes. However, the common planar arrays used in sonar systems are generally non-separable, so the beamforming with separable weighting results in the differences between the desired beam characteristics and the resultant beam characteristics. In this paper, we propose a new separable weighting method which can achieve the wanted beam characteristics by using the separable weights in horizontal and vertical directions for the non-separable planar arrays. In order to achieve the wanted beam characteristics, the proposed method minimizes the differences between the desired weights and the resultant weights based on the number of effective sensors in horizontal and vertical directions of the planar arrays.

Preliminary Investigation for Feasibility of Wave Energy Converters and the Surrounding Sea as Test-site for Marine Equipment

  • Of late, demand for test sites for marine equipment such as ASV, AUV, ROV, and various underwater sensors is increasing. The authors have focused on an oscillating water column (OWC), which is being constructed near Chagwido Island Jeju, as one of the test-sites. The main objective of the OWC is to produce wave energy and develop technologies. It has been built in the sea approximately 1 km off the coast. It has berth accommodation and some rooms that can be used as laboratories. To investigate the feasibility of its usage as a test site for marine equipment, we acquired bathymetric data around the OWC by using a multi-beam echo sounder and a single-beam scanning sonar. The accessibility of the OWC from nearby ports and the use of support vessels or ships were also investigated. 3D point cloud data from the multi-beam echo sounder and 2D acoustic images from the scanning sonar are expected to be used as references for identifying changes over time. In addition, through these experiments, we derived a procedure to use this facility as a test site by using the IDEF0 functional modelling method. Based on this preliminary investigation and previously reported examples, we determined the general conditions and preferences for evaluating the performance of various marine equipment heuristically. Finally, we developed five applications that were derived from this investigation.

Comparison of Multi-Static Sonar Target Positioning Performance (다중상태 소나망 위치 추정 성능 비교)

  • In this paper, we address the target positioning performance of Multi-Static sonar with respect to target positioning method and measurement error. Based on the analysis on two candidate solution approaches, namely, Least Square (LS) using range and angular information simultaneously and Maximum Likelihood (ML) using only range information as the existing information fusion methods for possible application to Multi-Static sonar, we propose to employ ML using range and angular information. Assuming that each sensor can receive range and angular information, we conduct representative comparison experiments over the existing and proposed methods under various measurement noise scenarios. We also investigate the target positioning performance according to number of sensors, distance between transmitter and receiver. According to the experimental results, RMSE of the proposed ML with distance and direction information is found to be more superior to ML using distance alone and to LS in case distance between transmitter and receiver is longer and number of receiver is smaller.

  • The problem for parameters estimation of the received signals impinging on array sensors has long been of great research interest in a great variety of applications, such as radar, sonar, and land mobile communications systems. Conventional subspace-based algorithms, such as MUSIC and ESPRIT, require an extensive computation of inverse matrix and eigen-decomposition. In this paper, we propose a new parameters estimation algorithm via nonlinear minimization, which is simplified computationally and estimates signal parameters simultaneously.

An Automatic Speed Control System of a Treadmill with Ultrasonic Sensors (초음파 센서를 이용한 트레드밀의 자동속도 제어시스템)

  • In this paper, we have developed an automatic velocity control system of a small-sized commercial treadmill (belt length of 1.2 m and width of 0.5 m) which is widely used at home and health centers. The control objective is to automatically adjust the treadmill velocity so that the subject's position is maintained within the track when the subject walks at a variable velocity. The subject's position with respect to a reference point is measured by a low-cost sonar sensor located on the back of the subject. Based on an encoder sensor measurement at the treadmill motor, a state feedback control algorithm with Kalman filter was implemented to determine the velocity of the treadmill. In order to reduce the unnatural inertia force felt by the subject, a predefined acceleration limit was applied, which generated smooth velocity trajectories. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in providing successful velocity changes in response to variable velocity walking without causing significant inertia force to the subject. In the pilot study with three subjects, users could change their walking velocity easily and naturally with small deviations during slow, medium, and fast walking. The proposed automatic velocity control algorithm can potentially be applied to any locomotion interface in an economical way without having to use sophisticated and expensive sensors and larger treadmills.

Analysis on Noise Correlation of Triplet Line Array Sensors in the East Sea (동해에서의 삼중 선 배열 센서들의 잡음 상관관계 분석)

  • A triplet line array has a capability for solving left/right ambiguity problem and high directivity of line array. For this, high computational powers and correlation between nearby sensors must be considered. Hardware powers are dramatically increased, so various adaptive beamforming techniques and signal processing techniques can be adopted for large triplet line array. To investigate the optimum signal processing method and improve the target detection capability, we need to analyze the noise correlation among the triplet line array sensors in real environment. In this paper we analyze the experimental data in the East Sea, investigate noise correlation between three hydrophones in triplet sensors, among the triplet sensors and time varying properties. Based on the acquired results, it is possible to verify some information for beamforming and signal processing methods with considering the properties of the triplet line array.
