Antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of various solvent extracts from different parts of the loquat were investigated to process it as the functional food. The extraction yield showed higher in butanol fraction of 4.95% in peel and 4.42% in seed than others, but water fraction showed high extraction yield of 3.89% in leafs 23.6% in the seedless fruit and 21.1% in fresh, In the antimicrobial activity test, ethyl acetate fraction that leaf and fruit excluded seed inhibited higher 19, 15 mm and 16, 15 m in clear zone far Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in each. Ethyl acetate fraction that extracted from a series of polar and nonpolar solvent fractionation of methanol extracts showed better results in the hydrogen donating activity of 82% in leaf, 74% in seedless fruit, 68% in seed, 52% in peel and 30% in fresh.
This study was carried out to investigate some antioxidative effects of stewed pumpkin juice (SPJ) and the SPJs added with ginger (SPJ-G), onion (SPJ-O), jujube (SPJ-J) or boxthorn (SPJ-B), respectively, on the lipid oxidation of soybean oil (S) and mackerel pike boiled ground (MPBG). Antioxidative substances of SPJ were extracted by using the two solvent layers of n-hexane:acetone (1:1)(H) and methanol:water (7:3)M. The antioxidative effects of the extracts were observed by the peroxide value (P.O.V.) and thiobabituric acid (T.B.A.) value. The P.O.V. and T.B.A. value of two solvent extracts of S and MPBG showed significantly lower than those of S and MPBG. The SPJ showed very distingnished antioxidative effects. It was considered that melanoidine extracted by using methanol:water (7:3) solvent as well as carotenoid extracted by using n-hexane:acetone (1:1) solvent had an antioxidative effect. During storage, T.B.A. value of MPBG significantly increased, while that of MPBG-SPJ significantly decreased more than that of MPBG. T.B.A. value of MPBG-SPJs decreased much than that of MPBG-SPJ, SPJ-O, SPJ-G, SPJ-J and SPJ-B, in order of abundance, showed higher level of antioxidative effects than SPJ. The aim of study was to elucidate the antibiosis of the Sophora Radix extracts by ethanol solvent on bacterias. The antibiosis on bacterias was examined in moisture water included the Sophora Radix extract. The results are as follows; Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of Sopora Radix extracts showed markedly lower on gram positive bacterias($0.0125{\sim}0.025$) such as aureus, B. subtilis, S. epidermids than that on gram negative bacterias such as E. coli, P. aeruginosa(>10). The MIC of moisture water included the Sophora Radiix which extracted by ethanol solvent was very low which meaned good antibiosis($0.0063{\sim}0.5$). The antibiosis of moisture water included the Sophora Radiix was improved by adding the ethanol on some baterias. In conclusion, Sophora Radix had excellent antibacterial effect. Therefore, it is expected that Sophora Radix can be practically used as the natural material of functional cosmetics for preventing the Bacterial inhibitory in skin.

Several extracts of different parts and solvent fractions of Cornus kousa were obtained and their functional material contents, antioxidant activities and tyrosinase inhibition effects were determined. Content of total polyphenols and flavonoids contents in flower were 169.638 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and 25.418 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively, which were much higher than those of other parts. Also, flower extracts showed the strongest effects on DPPH and ABTS radicals scavenging and ferrous ion chelating. In flower, leaf, and stem extracts, inhibition effects on peroxidation of linoleic acid determined by ferric thiocyanate(FTC) method were higher than a synthetic antioxidant, BHT. Tyrosinase inhibition activities were shown only in flower extract. Flower and leaf extracts, showing high biological activities in various system, were successively reextracted with n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate and n-butanol. Total polyphenol contents of water fractions were higher than any other solvent fractions in both flower and leaf, 67.006 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$ and 67.739 $mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively. But total flavonoid contents were higher in ethyl acetate fraction for flower extract and butanol fraction for leaf extract. Among the solvent fractions, the highest efficiency of free radical scavenging activities was obtained in ethyl acetate fraction for flower extract and n-butanol fraction for leaf extract. Tyrosinase inhibition activities were higher in water fraction for both flower and leaf extracts, 49.24% and 31.8%, respectively.
Laver is one of the most consumed edible red algae seaweeds in the genus Porphyra. Laver is primarily prepared in the form of dried, roasted, and seasoned products. We investigated the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of laver products, and evaluated the in vitro antioxidant properties of solvent extracts from commercially processed laver products. Significant differences in the concentration of phenolic compounds were found among differently processed laver. The total phenolic content for laver extracts ranged from 10.81 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g extract to 32.14 mg GAE/g extract, depending on extraction solvent and temperature. Laver extracts contained very few flavonoids (0.55 mg catechin equivalent/g extracts to 1.75 mg catechin equivalent/g extracts). 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS), hydroxyl radical, and superoxide anion scavenging assays were used to determine the radical scavenging capacities of laver extracts. These assays revealed that the processing method and extraction condition affected the antioxidant potentials of laver. Antioxidant activity of dried laver, roasted laver, and seasoned laver increased in a concentration-dependent manner ($100{\sim}1,000{\mu}g/mL$). The radical scavenging activities of $37^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$ water extracts were lower than that of a $37^{\circ}C$ 70% ethanol extract. The highest radical scavenging capacity was observed in the $37^{\circ}C$ 70% ethanol extracts of dried laver, roasted laver, and seasoned laver. Overall, these results support that notion that laver contains bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, which may have a positive effect on health.

Cnidium japonicum a biennial plant belonging to the family Umbelliferae, is a halophyte that grows in high-salinity areas of coastal sand dunes and sandy shores. This study was conducted to investigate the constituents, antioxidant activities, and physiological activities of C. japonicum. Mineral analyses revealed that potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium were the most prevalent minerals in C. japonicum. We used 80% ethanol, 80% methanol, and distilled water as solvents to prepare extracts from C. japonicum tissues, and the obtained extraction yields ranged between approximately 26% and 32%. Among the three extracts, the ethanol and methanol extracts had higher total polyphenol and flavonoid levels than the water extracts did. The antioxidant activities of methanol extracts were the highest among the various solvent extracts of C. japonicum as was the elastase/collagenase inhibitory activity. In contrast, the ethanol extract exhibited the highest tyrosinase inhibitory activity. Furthermore, the methanol extract possessed over 80% BACE1 (β-secretase) inhibitory activity at a final concentration of 20 ㎍/mL. Therefore, these results indicate that methanol and ethanol extracts of C. japonicum may be useful as antioxidant and functional substances in food and pharmaceutical material.
The selection of a suitable solvent is very important when preparing an extract. However, the effect of ethanol solvent concentration in the extraction of sweet wormwood tea has not been reported. Thus, extracts were prepared from sweet wormwood tea using water and various ethanol concentrations, and the phenolic compounds, antioxidants and anti-enzyme activities of the extracts were analyzed. The phenolic acid and flavonoid components differed according to extraction solvent, which also resulted in different antioxidant and antienzyme activities. In particular, flavonoid rhamnetin was not extracted using 80% and 99.5% ethanol and was highest when 60% ethanol was used for extraction. In the case of chlorogenic acid, the highest extraction efficiency was obtained with 80% ethanol. These results suggest the need for research to increase specific extraction efficiency by targeting major compounds that affect physiological activity.
Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Leguminosae) is a well-known herbal medicine that has long been valued as a demulcent to relieve inflammatory disorders. To compare the influence of different solvents on the anti-inflammatory efficacy of G. uralensis, we measured the inhibition of pro-inflammatory mediators such as NO, TNF-$\alpha$, and $PGE_2$ in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse macrophage RAW 264.7 cells by extracts produced using different solvents (water, methanol, ethanol, or n-hexane). The results showed that methanol was the most effective solvent for the inhibition of both NO and $PGE_2$ production in RAW 264.7 cells. However, there was no difference among the extracts for inhibition of TNF-$\alpha$. Further study must be performed for the analysis of correlation between the anti-inflammatory activity of extracts produced using different solvents and the content of major bioactive compounds in G. uralensis, such as glycyrrhizin and liquiritin. The present study suggests that methanol may be a more appropriate solvent of G. uralensis than other solvents (water, ethanol, and n-hexane) to yield the greatest anti-inflammatory activity for food additives and medicine.
