  • The kinetics of the solvolysis of benzyl and p-or m-substituted benzyl bromides in various alcohols have been determined by an electric conductivity method. From these reactions, a curved Hammett plot is obtained and a mechanism is proposed to account for the nonlinear behavior observed. In addition, effects of solvent polarity on the activation parameters for the solvolysis of benzyl bromides are discussed.

  • Before resin composites can serve as durable substitutes for amalgam restorations, the adhesive system used to retain them and add to seal dentin must be improved. The recent observations, using the newly developed LVDT (linear variable differential transformer) probe, that all commercial bonding systems cause a collapse of the demineralized dentin matrix, simulated a re-evaluation of the effects of these formulations on the matrix. The experiment was begun by examining solvents such as water-HEMA mixtures. These produced the same shrinkages as did the complete formulations.(omitted)

  • The acetone-butanol fermentation by C. acetobutylicum has gained increasing attention for the following reasons. First, the finite supply of petrochemical resources, combined with increasing concern over global environmental effects and the unstable nature of the price of petroleum has renewed interest in the development of fermentation technology that allows utilzation of biomass wastes for the production of alcohol. Second, it serves as excellent model system for understading the regulation and molecular biology of tightly regulated complex primary metabolism, and for applications of metabolic engineering. In this review various aspects of acetone-butanol fermentation by C. acetobutylicm including strain and fermentation characteristics, enzyme regulation, and solvent formation mechanism, and product recovery and summarized.

  • Fine powders of $\alpha$-Fe2O3 were prepared by precipitation method using iron (III) nitrate in ethanol solvent and the thick film using this powder was made by the screen printing technology. Effects of the reaction temperature and concentration of the iron (III) nitrate on the particle size and specific surface area were studied. Also, the relationship between the powder size and properties of the thick film was discussed.

  • The methanolysis reactions of phenylacetyl chlorides have been investigated in methanol-acetonitrile mixtures at temperatures ranging - $15.0-0.0^{\circ}C.$ Substituent and solvent effects on the rate supported an associative $S_N2$ mechanism for the solvolysis. Activation parameters indicated that the reaction is entropy controlled, while the a/s ratios of the Taft's solvactochromic correlation proved to be remarkably constant with a typical value of 0.50 that is consistent for the reactions proceeding by a typical $S_N2$ path.

  • Solvatochromic effect and hydrogen bonding interaction of NPNOH, NPNO- and NPNOR were investigated. Electronic transition energies of the dyes were plotted against empirical solvent polarity parameters, Taft's π* and Reichardt's ET(30). Good correlations were observed when the excitation energies were plotted against the energy calculated by multiple linear regression method which was developed by Taft. There is an intrinsic difference between betaine for ET(30) polarity scale and the azoderivative, which is derived from the specific hydrogen bond incurred with probe molecules and solvents. The hydrogen bonding plays a very important role for stabilization of an excited state molecule by solvents especially when a solute possesses a negative charge as with NPNO-.

  • Background: Bioprosthetic materials have been made using glutaraldehyde fixation of porcine or bovine pericardium during cardiovascular surgery. But these bioprostheses have the problems of calcification and mechanical failure. We determined changes in tensile strength and elasticity of pericardium after glutaraldehyde, solvent, decellularization and detoxification. Material and Method: Tissues were allocated to four groups: glutaraldehyde with and without solvent, decellularization, and detoxification. We studied tensile strength and strain on tissues. We measured the tensile strength of fresh pericardium stretched in six directions (with 5 mm width), and % strain, which we calculated from the breaking point when we pulled the pericardium in two directions. Result: Tensile strength was reduced when we used the usual concentrated glutaraldehyde fixation (n=83, $MPa=11.47{\pm}5.40$, p=0.006), but there was no change when we used solvent. Elasticity was increased after glutaraldehyde fixation (n=83, strain $(%)=24.55{\pm}9.81$, p=0.00), but there was no change after solvent. After decellularization of pericardium, the tensile strength was generally reduced. The decrease in tensile strength after concentrated glutaraldehyde fixation for a long time was significantly greater less than after concentrated solvent (p=0.01, p=0.00). After detoxification, the differences in strength and strain were not significant. Conclusion: After glutaraldehyde treatment of pericardium there is no loss in tensile strength (even though we did the glutaraldehyde, solvent and detoxification treatments LOGIC IS UNCLEAR). Also, these treatments had a tendency to increase elasticity. Although post-treatment decellularization led to a significant loss in strength, this effect could be attenuated using a low concentration of solvent or hypertonic solution.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidative effects of Lycii fructus powder (LFP) solvent extracts and Maejakgwa made with LFP. The solvent extracts of LFP were added to soybean oil in the quantity of $0.05\%$. The solvents used were methanol, ethanol, ethyl acetate and petroleum ether. Soybean oil without the addition of LFP was used as a negative control. Soybean oil with $0.02\%$ butylated hydroxytolune (BHT) and $\alpha$-tocopherol were used as positive controls. Each sample was stored at $50^{\circ}C$ for 30 days. The oxidation level of these samples was determined by measuring the acid value, peroxide value and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value. The oxidation level of solvent extracts of $0.05\%$ LFP was lower than both the negative control and $\alpha$-tocopherol. Especially, methanol extract of $0.05\%$ LFP was the lowest. The methanol extract (320 min) and ethanol extract (316 min) demonstrated longer induction periods, compared to the control (253 min), $\alpha$- tocopherol (255 min) and BHT (309 min) by Rancimat method. Acid value of Maejakgwa was increased during the storage time, but it was lower in Maejakgwa made with LFP than in the control group. Peroxide value was increased rapidly for 30 days and then decreased. TBA value was lower in Maejakgwa made with 3, 6, $9\%$ LFP than in those made with $15\%$ LFP and the control.
