  • Bacteriophage T4 endonuclease V initiates the repair of ultraviolet (UV)-induced pyrimidine dimer photoproducts in duplex DNA. The mechanism of DNA strand cleavage involves four sequential steps: linear diffusion along dsDNA, pyrimidine dimer-specific binding, pyrimidine dimer-DNA glycosylase activity, and AP lyase activity. • Thiophene-derivatized pentiptycenes were synthesized and characterized by NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Aggregation behavior of thiophene-derivatized pentiptycenes was monitored by the measurement of fluorescence. Fluorescence intensities for the thiophene-derivatized pentiptycenes and thiophene-derivatized pentiptycenes aggregates were compared. There is no shift in the maximum of the emission wavelength. In the range of water fraction between 20% and 40%, the emission intensity of thiophene-derivatized pentiptycene aggregates remains almost identical. Fluorescence efficiency incresaed by about 5 times higher when the thiophene-derivatized pentiptycenes forms the aggregates in solution.

  • A number of tin-containing elastomers are produced commercially by Korea Kumho Petrochemical Co., Ltd. (KKPC) under the Kosyn Sol tradename. The effect of mastication of commercial and laboratory polymerized S-SBR has, been investigated using chemical mixer(ML-500), NMR, GPC and Mooney viscometer. Mastication of polymers containings coupling bonds is affected by the amount of stearic acid, the temperature of mixing and the time length of mixing.

  • A new thiourea based receptor (1) was synthesized and applied to fluoride ion recognition in acetonitrile solution. Receptor 1 displayed dual changes in absorption and fluorescence emission intensities selectively for fluoride ions. The interaction of 1 with fluoride undergoes a deprotonation process that is confirmed by $^1H$ NMR titration.

  • Silicon, titanium, zirconium phosphates were synthesized by starting with appropriate chemical precursors in a solution. The synthetic procedure, chemical and physical structures were examined by FT-IR, liquid and solid state NMR, TGA, SEM, XRD, etc. The phosphates were examined for thermal and electrical properties. Advantages of the synthesis technique and the data on unique structures and thermal properties are reported.

  • $C_4$-Photocycloaddition of 5,7-dimethoxycoumarin(DMC) to 5-fluorouracil(5-FU) was studied in frozen aqueous solution. The major photoproduct was diagnosed and isolated by TLC and column chromatography. The structure of isolated photoproduct was identified as a $C_4$-cycloaddition product of DMC and 5-FU by the characteristics of its UV, IR, NMR, mass spectra, elemental analysis, and photosplitting.

  • A series of poly(1,4-phenylene terephthalates) with pendant NLO chromophores was prepared by the solution polycondensation of 2,5-NLO chromophore substituted terephthalic acid with hydroquinone. The polymers obtained gave satisfactory NMR and elemental analysis results when taking into account their expected structures and the inherent viscosity value proved the polymeric character of all polymers. DSC, optical polarizing microscopy and WAXS studies revealed that none of these polymers exhibited liquid crystalline mesophases. Preliminary results on NLO properties of these polymers showed a surprisingly large second harmonic signal relative to a Y-cut quartz plate.

  • For the development of a biocompatible nano-scale drug carrier. hydrophilic polysaccharide pullulan was hydrophobized by the conjugation with fatty acid. The synthesized polymers were characterized by the measurements of fourier transform infrared (FT -IR) spectroscopy and 1H -nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In aqueous solution. hydrophobically modified puliulan was self-assembled and structured into the core-shell type nanoparticles. (omitted)

  • Ferroelectric L $a_2$ $Ti_2$ $O_{7}$(LTO) thin films were prepared by chemical solution deposition processes. Acetylacetone was used as chelating agent and nitric acid was added in the stock solution to control hydrolysis and condensation reaction rate. The LTO thin films were spin-coated on Pt/Ti/ $SiO_2$/(100)Si and Pt/Zr $O_2$/ $SiO_2$/(100)Si substrates. After multiple coating, dried thin films were heat-treated for decomposition of residual organics and crystallization. The role of acetylacetone in Ti iso-propoxide stabilization by possibly substituting $O^{i}$Pr ligand was studied by H-NMR. B site-rich impurity phase, i.e. L $a_4$ $Ti_{9}$ $O_{24}$, was found after annealing, where its appearance was dependent on process temperature indicating the possible reaction with substrate. Dielectric and other relevant electrical properties were measured and the results were compared between modified sol-gel and MOD processes.s.s.
