In vitro corrosion resistance of the commercially used 76.5wt.%Pd-17.6%Cu-7.2%Ga and 77.3%Pd-6.0%Ga dental Prostheses high-Palladium system alloys in cast, degassing and porcelain-firing heat treatment conditions were evaluated by the potentiodynamic polarization technique in the de-aerated 0.9%NaCl and a modified Fusayama electrolyte. From the corrosion rate experimental results, we found that there is a small difference in the corrosion resistance depending on the microstructure. However. it was so small that there is no significant problem as a dental material. The 77.3%Pd-6.0%Ga showed better corrosion resistance than the 76.5%Pd-11.6%Cu-7.2%Ga dental Prostheses high-palladium system alloys. These experimental observations in 76.5%Pd-11.6%Cu-7.2%Ga alleys are mainly due to a rapid quenching and Cu in the alloy which accelerate the eutectic reaction with a segregation and Precipitates in the microstructure. On the ocher hand, 77.3%Pd-6.0%Ga alloys, which are solid-solution matrix, show much better col·lesion resistance compared with that of 76.5%Pd-11.6%Cu-7.2%Ga alloys.

We investigated a correlation between morphology and photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 nanotubes fabricated by well-controlled anodization processes. Anodization in an ethylene-glycol-based electrolyte solution accelerated the rapid grow rate of TiO2 nanotubes, but also cause problems such as delamination at the interface between TiO2 nanotubes and a Ti substrate, and debris on the top of the nanotube. The applied voltages for the anodization of TiO2 were adjusted to avoid the interface delamination. The heat treatment and the anodizing time were also controlled to enhance the crystallinity of the as-prepared TiO2 nanotubes and to increase the surface area with the varied length of the anodized TiO2 nanotubes. Additionally, a 2-step anodization process was utilized to remove the debris on the tube top. The photoelectrochemical properties of TiO2 nanotubes prepared with the carefully tailored conditions were investigated. By removing the debris on TiO2 nanotubes, applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of TiO2 nanotubes increased up to 0.33%.

$TiO_2$ has excellent photocatalytic properties and several studies have reported the increase in its specific surface area. The structure of $TiO_2$ nanofibers indicates promising improved photocatalytic properties and these nanofibers can thus potentially be applied in air pollution sensors and pollutant removal filters. In this study, a $TiO_2$ nanofiber was fabricated by the electrospinning method. The fabrication processing factors such as the applied voltage, the distance between nozzle and collector, and the inflow rate of solution were controlled. The precursor was titanium (IV) isopropoxide and as-spun $TiO_2$ nanofibers were heated at $450^{\circ}C$ for 2 h to obtain an anatase crystalline structure. The microstructure was analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The anatase phase was observed in the $TiO_2$ nanofibers after heat treatment. The diameter of $TiO_2$ nanofibers increased with the flow rate, but decreased with decreasing applied voltage and nozzle to collector distance. The diameter of $TiO_2$ nanofibers was controlled in the range of 364 nm to 660 nm. These nanofibers are expected to be very useful in photocatalytic applications.
In this study, the effects of Co content on the microstructure and Charpy impact properties of Fe-Cr-W ferritic/martensitic oxide dispersion strengthened (F/M ODS) steels are investigated. F/M ODS steels with 0-5 wt% Co are fabricated by mechanical alloying, followed by hot isostatic pressing, hot-rolling, and normalizing/tempering heat treatment. All the steels commonly exhibit two-phase microstructures consisting of ferrite and tempered martensite. The volume fraction of ferrite increases with the increase in the Co content, since the Co element considerably lowers the hardenability of the F/M ODS steel. Despite the lowest volume fraction of tempered martensite, the F/M ODS steel with 5 wt% Co shows the highest micro-Vickers hardness, owing to the solid solution-hardening effect of the alloyed Co. The high hardness of the steel improves the resistance to fracture initiation, thereby resulting in the enhanced fracture initiation energy in a Charpy impact test at - 40℃. Furthermore, the addition of Co suppresses the formation of coarse oxide inclusions in the F/M ODS steel, while simultaneously providing a high resistance to fracture propagation. Owing to these combined effects of Co, the Charpy impact energy of the F/M ODS steel increases gradually with the increase in the Co content.

Ni-SiC composite coating layers were prepared by electroplating method and their deposition rate, codeposition of SiC, morphology, surface roughness, hardness, wear and friction properties were investigated. It was found that the deposition rate and the codeposition of SiC in the composite coating layer increased with increasing concentration of SiC in the solution only at the early stage. Both of them reached certain maxima and then decreased with increasing concentration of SiC. Rough surface was obtained with increasing codeposition of SiC, which is probably due to the agglomeration of the SiC particle in the vicinity of surface. Vickers hardness increased with increasing codeposition of SiC and heat treatment at $300^{\circ}C$ in air for 1 hour. Wear volume decreased with increasing codeposition of SiC and friction coefficient increased with increasing codeposition of SiC at the early stage, and it became almost constant. Such wear and friction behaviors are desirable for the practical application.
We used melt polymerization method to prepare a series of aromatic liquid crystals (LCs) based on aromatic ester and amide units with the reactive methyl-maleimide end group, and then the resulting thermally cross-linked LCs to produce LC thermoset films by means of solution casting and the followed heat treatment. The synthesized LCs and LCTs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), thermomechanical analysis (TMA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and polarizing optical microscopy (POM) with a hot stage. All of the LCs prepared by melt polymerization method formed smectic mesophases. The thermal properties of the LC and LCT films were strongly affected by the mesogen units in the main chain structures. The thermal expansion coefficients of samples were in the range of 27.72~50.95 ppm/$^{\circ}C$.
Prussian blue analogues(PBAs) are comprised of cyano-bridged transition metal ions. The wide and unique open-framework structures of the PBAs enable reversible intercalation and deintercalation of various ions such as $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, etc. In addition, since PBAs are synthesized through coprecipitation reaction in aqueous solution at room temperature, they are produced economically and environmentally friendly. However, the formation of crystals proceeds rapidly, and defects such as vacancy and crystal water tend to be present in the crystals, thereby affecting key battery performance. Therefore, significant efforts to inhibit defects in PBAs have been made. In the case of vacancy, the reaction rate was controlled at the synthesis stage to reduce the formation of vacancy, and the crystal water was removed by heat treatment under vacuum. In addition, by adding transition metals that do not react within the structure of PBA, the structural instability during the electrochemical reaction was largely alleviated.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous in the environment. They are highly toxigenic and carcinogenic. Probiotic bacteria isolated from fermented foods were tested to check their ability to degrade and/or detoxify PAHs. Five probiotic bacteria with distinct morphologies were isolated from a mixture of 26 fermented foods co-cultured with benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) containing Bushnell Haas minimal broth. Among them, B. velezensis (PMC10) significantly reduced the abundance of BaP in the broth. PMC10 completely degraded BaP presented at a lower concentration in broth culture. B. velezensis also showed a clear zone of degradation on a BaP-coated Bushnell Haas agar plate. Gene expression profiling showed significant increases of PAH ring-hydroxylating dioxygenases and 4-hydroxybenzoate 3-monooxygenase genes in B. velezensis in response to BaP treatment. In addtion, both live and heat-killed B. velezensis removed BaP and naphthalene (Nap) from phosphate buffer solution. Live B. velezensis did not show any cytotoxicity to macrophage or human dermal fibroblast cells. Live-cell and cell-free supernatant of B. velezensis showed potential anti-inflammatory effects. Cell-free supernatant and extract of B. velezensis also showed free radical scavenging effects. These results highlight the prospective ability of B. velezensis to biodegrade and remove toxic PAHs from the human body and suggest that the biodegradation of BaP might be regulated by ring-hydroxylating dioxygenase-initiated metabolic pathway.
The microstructure of Cu-15 wt%Ag composites fabricated by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) with intermediate heat treatment at $320^{\circ}C$ was investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. Ag precipitates with a thickness of 20-40 nm were observed in the eutectic region of the Cu-15 wt%Ag composite solution treated at $700^{\circ}C$ before ECAP. The Cu matrix and Ag precipitates had a cube on cube orientation relationship. ECAPed composites exhibited ultrafine-grained microstructures with the shape and distribution dependent on the processing routes. For route A in which the sample was pressed without rotation between each pass, the Cu and Ag grains were elongated along the shear direction and many micro-twins were observed in elongated Cu grains as well as in Ag filaments. The steps were observed on coherent twin boundaries in Cu grains. For route Bc in which the sample was rotated by 90 degrees after each pass, a subgrain structure with misorientation of 2-4 degree by fragmentation of the large Cu grains were observed. For route C in which the sample was rotated by 180 degrees after each pass, the microstructure was similar to that of the route A sample. However, the thickness of the elongated grains along the shear direction was wider than that of the route A sample and the twin density was lower than the route A sample. It was found that more microtwins were formed in ECAPed Cu-15 wt%Ag than in the drawn sample. Grain boundaries were observed in relatively thick and long Ag filaments in Cu-15 wt%Ag ECAPed by route C, indicating the multi-crystalline nature of Ag filaments.

To prepare zinc oxide powder, three types of sodium-based alkali precipitants such as NaOH, Na2CO3, NaOH/NaHCO3 were compared to the differences in the manufacturing process of zinc oxide powder from zinc precipitate products like intermediates with the consideration of thermodynamic reaction. The prepared zinc precipitate products by the reaction with the sodium-based alkali precipitant were confirmed to respectively hydroxy zinc chloride (Zn5(OH)8Cl2·H2O) and zinc carbonate hydroxide (Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2·H2O) from XRD analysis. Zinc oxide particles were compared in heat treatment at 800℃ according to sodium-based alkali precipitants. The mixed NaOH and NaHCO3 of alkali precipitant reaction was contributed to synthesize the more uniform zinc oxide particles.
