Microstructure and mechanical properties of Sn-3.1 wt.%Ag-6.9 wt.%Bi system solders on Cu-substrate were studied. The Sn3.1 wt.%Ag-6.9 wt.%Bi alloy was designed by phase diagram and chemical properties and was prepared by melting in argon atmosphere. The mechanical properties of solder/Cu joints were examined by shear strength test, and also creep test. The microstructure of Sn-3.1 wt.%Ag-6.9 wt.%Bi alloy consists of Bi-rich phase and $Ag_3Sn$ precipitate in {\beta}-Sn$ matrix phase. The shear strength of the joint was decreased with aging treatment. Crack path under shear test was through the solder. Similar crack path change mode was observed at the creep test of solder/Cu joint. The creep behavior of Sn-3.1 wt.%Ag-6.9 wt.%Bi alloy represented the inverse primary creep behavior at all test condition. It is suggested that the inverse primary creep behavior is induced from Bi solute atoms in Sn-matrix. The creep resistance of Sn-3.1Ag-6.9Bi alloy is better than that of Sn-3.5 wt.%Ag alloy at all test conditions.
For comprehensive understanding of the formation behavior of $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phase in Al-Si-Cu alloys with the existence of Fe element, microstructure characterizations were performed using combined analysis of OM, SEM-EDS, XRD. Especially, experimental and predictive works on solidification events of $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phase as well as other phases formed together with $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ have been carried out by using DSC analysis and Java-based Materials Properties software (J. Mat. Pro.). Primary and eutectic $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phases were able to distinguish from each other on microstructures by their morphological features. Primary $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phase was seen to have rough surface perpendicular to growth direction, indicating free attachment of solute atoms in liquid state. On the other hand, the eutectic $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ phase was formed with plain and straight surface during eutectic reaction together with $\alpha$-Al phase. The eutectic reaction of $\beta-Al_5FeSi$ and $\alpha$-Al phases was seen to be able to separate into each formation depending on cooling rate.
The relative viscosities and osmotic coefficients of solutions of urea, 1,3-dimethyl-urea(DMU), acetamide(AA), and propionamide (PA) in dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO), water, methanol, and in ethanol have been measured at 25 and $45^{\circ}$C by viscometry and osmometry. Viscosity increment in nonaqueous solutions decreased with increasing of the partial molal volumes of the solutes, but in aqueous solution the result was inversed. Viscosity increment of aqueous solution was smaller than that of aqueous DMU solution, but that of nonaqueous urea solution was larger than that of DMU. Amides, however, showed similar viscosity increment in any solvent.Osmotic coefficients of aqueous solution of urea were larger than those of DMU. In the nonaqueous solutions urea exhibited larger deviation from Raoult's law than DMU. The results indicated that urea molecules break water-structure in water, self-associate in DMSO, and showed larger solute-solvent interaction in alcohols than DMU. It can be also confirmed that amides break alcohol structure to a greater extent than any other solutes.
The objective of this study was to determine whether 4-phenylazobezyloxycarbonyl-Pro-Leu-Gly-Pro-D-Arg (Pz-peptide), an enhancer of hydrophilic solute permeability in the intestine, could elevate the paracellular permeability of hydrophilic drugs across cornea and conjunctiva in the rabbit. The in-vitro penetration of hydrophilic drugs (mannitol, atenolol) and lipophilic drug (propranolol) across the rabbit cornea and conjunctiva was studied either in the presence or absence of 3 mM Pz-peptide. Drug penetration was evaluated using the modified Ussing chamber. The conjunctiva was more permeable than the cornea to all drugs. Pz-peptide showed enhanced effects on the drug transport across cornea and conjunctiva in a concentration dependent manner. Effects or ion transport inhibitor on the mannitol penetration were then investigated. Mannitol penetration was not changed by serosal addition of $100\;{\mu}M$ ouabain, suggesting that $Na^+/K^+$ ion tranporter was not involved in the Pz-peptide induced elevation of paracellular drug permeability. Furthermore, effects of Pz-peptide and EDTA on the transport of atenolol and propranolol into the ocular tissues or blood circulation after its administration into both eyes were investigated. EDTA showed enhanced effect on propranolol transport into the ocular tissues, but Pz-peptide did not show significant difference. Systemic absorption of propranolol by the addition of EDTA or Pz-peptide was not changed. On the other hand, EDTA and Pz-peptide elavated the atenolol transport into the ocular tissues. The transport of atenolol into the blood circulation was also enhanced by the addition of EDTA, but no effect was observed by the addition of Pz-peptide. The above findings suggest that Pz-peptide would be used as an paracellular pathway enahncer of hydrophilic drugs into the eye, without affecting the systemic absortion of topically applied opthalmic drugs.
Seasonal changes of water relations parameters were obtained from p-v curves in leaves of Quercus grosseserrata and Quercus acutissima. The osmotic pressure at full hydration, ${\pi}_o$, and osmotic pressure at incipient plasmolysis, ${\pi}_p$, were high in newly emerged leaves but decreased with leaf development in each of the species. Water deficit at turgor loss was 10 to 20% in each of the species during the growing season. Maximum bulk elastic modulus in cell walls at full turgor, Emax, rises rapidly with leaf development before senescence in each of the species. Seasonal change of number of osmoles solute in symplasm per dry weight, Ns/DW, was higher in Quercus grosseserrata leaves than Quercus acutissima leaves, while relative water content (Vp/Vo, $RWC^*$, Vo/Vt) was relatively constant in each of the species.

The cpapcitors with MIM(metal-insulator-metal) structures using PVP gate insulation films were prepared for the application of flexible organic thin film transistors (OTFT). The co-polymer organic insulation films were synthesized by using PVP(poly-4-vinylphenol) as a solute and PGMEA(propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate) as a solvent. The cross-linked PVP insulation films were also prepared by addition of poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde) as thermal hardener. The leakage current of the cross- linked PVP films was found to be about 1.3 nA on Al/PES(polyethersulfone) substrate, whereas, on ITO/ glass substrate was about 27.5 nA indicating improvement of the leakage current at Al/PES substrates. Also, the capacitances of all prepared samples on ITO/glass and Al/PES substrates w ere ranged from 1.0 to $1.2nF/cm^2$, showing very similar result with the calculated capacitance values.
The apparent molal volumes(${\phi}_v$) of the homologous salts $RNH_3Cl$, where R varies from methyl-($CH_{3^-}$) to n-butyl-(n-$C_4H_{9^-}$) in a series of methanol-water mixtures have been determined at 30$^{\circ}C$ by means of a float method to fifth decimal places down to 0.01 m. The values of ${\phi}_r$ extrapolated to infinite dilution give partial molal volumes $\bar{V}^{\circ}$which varies considerably in accordance with the solvent composition. that is, mole fraction of methanol. The experimental results are discussed in terms of the varying size and charge effect, hydrophobic nature of the solute species, and also the additivity relationship between successive homologous and the structure of the binary solvent. The results indicate that at 0.1 mole fraction methanol the enhanced structuredness of water cause a minimum in the partial molal volumes of cations $\bar{V}^{\circ}_+$, while at 0.4 mole fraction the solvent structure is such that the free volume is a minimum but the effect of electrostriction is a maximum.
Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) cracking susceptibility in the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) of reduced activation ferritic-martensitic (RAFM) steels was evaluated through stress-rupture tests. 9Cr-1W based alloys including different C, Ta and Ti content were prepared. The coarse grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) samples were simulated with welding condition of 30 kJ/cm heat input. CGHAZ samples consisted of martensite matrix. Stress rupture experiments were carried out using a Gleeble simulator at temperatures of $650-750^{\circ}C$ and at stress levels of 125-550 MPa, corresponding to PWHT condition. The results revealed that PWHT cracking resistance was improved by Ti addition, i.e., Ti contributed to the formation of fine and stable MX precipitates and suppression of coarse M23C6 carbides, resulting in improvement of stress rupture ductility. Meanwhile, rupture strength increased with increasing solute C content.
Micron-sized dextran particles, which now attract wide attention as a promising drug delivery systems, can be prepared via the supercritical anti-solvent (SAS) process. In SAS process, dextran particles are obtained as a result of recrystallization of dissolved dextran in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on addition of supercritical $CO_2$ as an anti-solvent. In this work, with an intention to provide information on the feasible operating conditions of the process, the phase behavior of Dexran/DMSO/$CO_2$ is observed by measuring the cloud point in favor of a variable volume cell. From the experimental study, it is concluded that a feasible operating condition of the SAS process for preparation of dextran particles would be 300.15 K~330.15 K and 90 bar~130 bar, respectively, and solute concentration ranges from 5mg/ml to 20 mg/ml.
The present study was aimed to investigate whether ethanol-extract of Nelumbo nucifera has an ameliorative effect on the renal function in high fructose-diet induced hypertensive rats. The urine osmolality (Uosmel) was decreased in rats with high fructose-diet ($60\%$) during the whole experiment period without change of the urine volume (UV). The urinary excretion of sodium and chloride were decrease significantly in rats with fructose induced hypertensive rats, wheras urinary excretion of potassium was increased. The creatinine clearance (CCr) and solute-free water reabsorption were also decreased by treatment of fructose rich diet. Among these renal functional parameters, CCr was partially restored by the administration of ethanol-extract of Nelumbo nucifera. The Uosmol was also partially restored by the administration ethanol-extract of Nelumbo nucifera at the end of the experimental period. Taken together, ethanol-extract of Nelumbo nucifera has the ameliorative effect on glomerular filtration rate in rats with high fructose-diet induced hypertension.
