  • The solubility of methane in poly(n-butyl methacrylate)(PnBMA) was determined at pressures up to 35 atm. These measurements were made by volumetric technique in the temperature range from -10 to 30$^{\circ}$C. The solubility was found to be a nonlinear function of the applied pressure and could be satisfactorily described by dual-mode sorption model at temperatures below the glass txansition temperature($T_g$) of the polymer. The Langmuir capacity constant decreased with increasing temperature and vanished near the glass transition temperature of PnBMA. The solubility isotherm became linear at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of PnBMA. The temperature dependence of the dual-mode sorption parameters was also discussed.

  • The objective of this study is to develop hydrocarbon-based cleaning agents by blending paraffins, glycol ethers and siloxanes in oder to effectively clean contaminants such as flux, solder and grease. And the effect of cleaning ability by wetting index, aniline points and solubility parameter of the formulated hydrocarbon-based cleaning agents were studied in this work. The formulated hydrocarbon-based cleaning agents were prepared on the base of physical properties of their individual components. Wetting indexes and aniline points of their were measured through experiments and solubility parameters of their were calculated based on the Hansen's equation. In this study, evaluation of cleaning ability by cleaning agents were carried out using contaminants such as flux, solder, and grease. The experimental results showed that the cleaning ability of the formulated cleaning agents was excellent in cleaning contaminants such as flux, solder and grease and that the influencing parameters on their cleaning efficiency were found to be different according to contaminant types. MC($20.3MPa^{1/2}$), DF-1 ($24.2MPa^{1/2}$) and DF-2($21.5MPa^{1/2}$) with similar solubility parameter as flux ($21.3MPa^{1/2}$) showed 100% cleaning efficiency within 3 minutes in flux cleaning. And CFC-113, MC and 1,1,1-TCE with low aniline point less than $-20^{\circ}C$ showed excellent cleaning efficiency in solder cleaning. DG-1($16.2\;MPa^{1/2}$) and DG-2($15.5\;MPa^{1/2}$) with similar solubility parameter as grease($15.0{\sim}17.0\;MPa^{1/2}$) showed relatively low cleaning efficiency of grease, but CFC-113 and MC with high wetting index and low aniline point showed good cleaning efficiency in grease cleaning. As a result of this study, the hydrocarbon-based cleaning agents alternative to regulated cleaning agents such as CFC-113, 1,1,1-TCE and MC were able to be developed through properly blending paraffins, glycol ethers and siloxanes for cleaning flux, solder and grease. And it can be shown that various influencing parameters of cleaning efficiency such as wetting index, aniline point, solubility parameter and etc. of the non-aqueous cleaning agent should be reviewed for prediction of their cleaning ability and can be applied to formulation of cleaning agents.

  • Wool fabrics were dyed with the aqueous solution of C. I. Red Acid 114 mixed with methanol dissolving three kinds of barely water soluble ketones, acetophenone, 2-pentanone, and 3-pentanone. The steric hinderance and the orientation of the bigger hydrophobic part of the solvated dye molecules to the fiber slowed down the dying rate, however, loosening the wool molecule, say a little swelling, disaggeregating the dye molecules, and attaining the higher dye concentration on the fiber surface by the added solvents increased the amount of dye on the fabric. The higher concentration or/and the higher dyeing temperature helped loosen fiber molecules and made it easier for the solvated dye molecules to penetrate into the inside of the fiber. Acetophenone, the most influential solvent used, showed that the ability to loosen fiber molecules was the most important of all the three positive solvent actions mentioned above. The considered mechanism provided before reflected the fact that the dye uptake on the fabric dyed with the solvents included, except for 0.034M and 0.051M of acetophenone, was even lower than that without any solvents at $50^\circ{C}$, but all the solvents added to the dye bath increased the dye uptake on the fiber at $70^\circ{C}$.

  • Migration behavior of selected solvents and food samples showed differences of the chemical structures and polarities, the food samples which have similar polar expresses more higher affinity than different polar degrees. Water which is polar has a highest partitioning coefficient values on polar isopropanol, and oil which is nonpolar has highest partitioning value on non-polar toluene. The increasing order of partitioning values was accord with increasing water contents in food samples. It is showed that the wheat flour with 13.2% moisture content has the highest partitioning coefficient values on the isopropanol with -OH. Kp value of sugar showed remarkable lower partitioning coefficient values than other food samples due to high degree crystallinity. This phenomenon can be predictable with ${\delta}$ values, because order of partitioning coefficient values which comes out through the experiment and the sequence of Hildebrand solubility parameter value difference between food sample and printing ink solvent correspond almost. This Hildebrand solubility parameter value can be easily applied to the food package industry because the effect of food-safety can be considered without passing through complicated steps by using this method.

  • The relation between the flocculation and dispersion of metal oxide powders and the properties of solvents, such as dielectric constant and solubility parameter, was investigated for TiO$_2$, $Al_2$O$_3$and Fe$_2$O$_3$particles. The particle size and median diameter of these metal oxides were measured in many organic solvents, from which the effect of solvents on the flocculation and dispersion of metal oxide powders was considered. The metal oxide powders of TiO$_2$, $Al_2$O$_3$and Fe$_2$O$_3$tend to disperse in a solvent of higher polarity, whereas they are apt to flocculate in a solvent of low dielectric constant, because the Hamaker constant between the particles becomes larger in such a solvent. There we, however, some solvents that do not obey these tendencies. It is possible to evaluate the flocculation and dispersion of these metal oxide powders in many solvents by using numeral balances of Hansen’s three-dimensional solubility parameter (f$_{d}$, f$_{p}$ and f$_{h}$). There exists a solvent giving the optimal dispersion for each metal oxide, and the optimal dispersion point of f$_{d}$, f$_{p}$ and f$_{h}$ is determined by the combination of various metal oxide powders and solvents.nts.nts.nts.

  • Alcohol concentration via pervaporation process was performed by using commercial PDMS(polydimethylsiloxane) composite membrane and plasma treated PP(polypropylene) membranes. Effects of operating parameters of pcrvaporation process were examined. With the increase of butanol concentration in the feed, flux and selectivity increased due to the greater affinity of butanol with PDMS than that of water. As the operating temperature increased, free volume as well as the solubilities and diffusivities of alcohol and water increased to result in the greater flux and less selectivity of the membrane. As solubility parameter difference between alcohol and PDMS membrane decreased, high flux and good selectivity were obtained. When PP membrane was plasma treated with methanol, it has 6 times greater flux than PDMS membrane with equivalent separation factor. With the increase of plasma treatment time, flux and selectivity were enhanced. However, excess treatment time caused pore blocking to result in the flux decrease.

  • The effects of binary solvent mixtures with various ratios of toluene and ethanol on the properties of slurries and green sheets were investigated. Viscosity of slurry was changed by varying the ratio of solvent mixture which affected the solubility of binder. The relative solvency behavior of a solvent mixture could be predicted with the Hildebrand solubility parameter(${\delta}$) and hydrogen bonding index( ${\gamma}$). The minimum viscosity, the best dispersion of binder, was reached at the composition of toluene:ethanol=4:6, which corresponded to our forecast. The mechanical properties of green sheets related to evaporation of solvents were influenced by the composition of the solvent mixture. At the azeotrope the skin was formed on a drying cast during the drying process because of fast evaporation. At a range of concentrations over 50wt% toluene, green sheets could not be fully dried at low temperature due to excessive toluene. The mechanical properties of green sheets were excellent at the azeotrope-like composition of toluene:ethanol=4:6 which has a little excess of toluene over the azeotrope.

  • Valsartan, a drug for the treatment of cardiovascular disease, exhibited low bioavailability which was caused by, at least in part, limited solubility at low pH. Present investigation deals with the preparation and characterization of gastro-retentive drug delivery system (GRDDS) using valsartan solid dispersion. We prepared solid dispersion using surfactants (Poloxamer 407) and alkalizer ($Na_2CO_3$) which may to be useful for improving solubility of valsartan at low pH and evaluated by saturated solubility of valsartan in distilled water. Valsartan gastro-retentive (GR) tablets containing solid dispersion prepared and evaluated by weight variation, floating time and dissolution rate. Compression at lower pressures resulted in the tablets floating over simulated gastric fluid (pH 1.2) for more than 17 h. In vitro release of valsartan from GR tablet was dependent on the amount of poloxamer 407 and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. On the basis of evaluation parameter, formulation E-3 was selected as a final formulation. Therefore, it can be concluded that the GR tablets containing solid dispersion may be exploited successfully for the delivery of poorly drug such as valsartan.

  • To understand the thermoresponsive volume phase transition of an N-isopropyl acrylamide(NIPA) gel on water, the solubility parameter of neutral NIPA gel was determined by swelling the gel with various solvents. Water was found not to be a good solvent for NIPA gel. Equilibrium swelling curves of NIPA gel were respectively obtained by immersing in pure water, ethanol, n-propanol and some mixed solvents. On adding a small amount of alcohols to water, volume phase transition of NIPA gel in water was changed. Phase transition temperature of this gel was decreased with the increase of the carbon number of alcohol.
