Micro inorganic solids and dissolved materials contained in the white water of linerboard process was obtained by centrifugation, and their characteristics were analyzed along with their effects on the mechanical properties of linerboard. Micro inorganic materials had little influence on tensile index and ZDT of UKP sheets. They showed rather a positive effect on mechanical properties of KOCC sheets due to adsorbed polymer. Mechanical properties of KOCC sheets decreased remarkably when the concentration of dissolved materials increased especially above 4000 ppm.
One of the main problems to constitute control method on biologically oriented wastewater purification processes, e.g. activated sludge process, sequential batch reactor, rotating bio-disk contactor, etc. is that it is hard to control the target component directly. For instance, while biochemical oxygen demand, suspended solids, and chemical oxygen demand are the key components to check the process performance, one may not control them directly since they are the results of microbial activities related to numerous physiochemical factors. Therefore controllers for bioprocess should be designed to make favorable condition for microorganisms´ living, e.g. dissolved oxygen level favorable, mixed liquor suspended solids concentration suitable ...
Lab-scale experiments have been carried out to investigate ammonia stripping with a modified spray tower for removing ammonia nitrogen from swine wastewater. The operating conditions such as initial pH, temperature, air flow, hole size of distributor determining the diameter of water drops, and influent solids concentration were closely examined focusing on removal efficiency of ammonia. As a result of the experiment, in order to achieve high rate of ammonia removal by the air stripping system, the air flow rate must be supplied at high rate with sufficiently high initial pH, temperature. The optimum operating condition to meet the residual ammonia concentration of 300 mg/L was the initial pH of 11.0 at $35^{\circ}C$ with the air flow rate of 20 L/min. It also showed that the smaller hole size is, the higher removal rate of ammonia is expected. However, when used a small sized distributor (2 mm), the flooding problem at the upper column occurred due to clogging of the hole. With regard to the influent solids concentration, it was showed that the lower concentration of solids, the higher removal rate of ammonia. The removal of particulate materials in influent led to improve the removal efficiency of ammonia, rather than to control the operating condition including initial pH, temperature, and air flow. The empirical correlation between KLa and operating parameters would be driven as, $K_{La}=(0.0003T-0.0047){\cdot}G^{0.3926}{\cdot}L^{-0.5169}{\cdot}C^{-0. 1849}$. The calculated $K_{La}$ from proposed formula can be used effectively to estimate the optimum reaction time and to calculate the volume of modified spray tower system.
The bioleaching of heavy metals from fly ash was performed by Thiobacillus thiooxidans MET isolated from the enrichment culture of an anaerobically digested sludge. The effect of solid concentrations on the efficiency of metal leaching was studied in shaken flasks. In the range of solid concentrations 20 g.L$^1$to 100 g.L$^1$T. thiooxidans MET oxidized S$^{0}$ to sulfate without any lag period. The final pH of slurry solution was decreased to below pH 1, and the final oxide-redox potential (ORP) was increased to over 420 mV in the solid concentrations below 100 g.L$^1$. However, the initial lag period of 4 to 8 days was required to obtain the pH reduction and ORP increase of the slurry solutions in the range of solid concentrations 150 g.L$^1$to 300 g.L$^1$. The sulfur oxidation rate of T. thiooxidans MET in 20~100 g.L$^1$solid concentrations was 0.70~0.75 g-S.L$^1$ㆍ d$^1$, but its sulfur oxidation activity was remarkably inhibited with increasing solid concentration over 150 g.L$^1$. Increasing fly ash solids concentration in the range of solids concentration 20 g.L$^1$ to 200 g.L$^1$decreased the removal efficiency of Zn, Cu, Mn, Cr and Pb. The solubilization of heavy metals from fly ash was strongly correlated with the pH value of slurry solution. When the pH of slurry solution was reduced to 3, the solubilization process of Zn, Cu and Mn started, and their solubilization efficiency of Zn, Cu and Mn was progressively increased below pH 2. However, the solubilization process of Cr and Pb started at pH 2.5 and 2.0, respectively.
Whole amount of waste water, approximately 921.6 liter, for cleaning a ready mixed concrete truck should be used to produce concrete as a mixing water or cleaning water. Recycling water for concrete mixing contains solids, which cause decrease in slump, air and compressive strengths, so it may influence on poor concrete quality. Therefore, it has been maintained to use recycling water with less than 3 percent of solids. Since no evaluation system has been constructed to directly reflect on variability of recycling water from ready mixed concrete plants, it is necessary to develop "Automatic recycling solid measuring system" for quality controls in real time. In this research, sensors measuring waste water concentration in ultrasonic and inductance methods were developed, and automatic system using the sensors were established. The accuracy of measurement sensors developed for recycling water based on various conditions of concentration was proved, and application limits were evaluated. Also, concentration of recycling water using sensors developed from ready mixed concrete plant was measured, and curing method verified the accuracy of the sensors. Moreover, measurement sensors for recycling water in various locations were installed to evaluate the effects on measuring method and spots. The automatic measuring system for recycling water concentration, which is developed in the research, will contribute to improve concrete quality safety through reliable solids maintenance.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of feeding milk replacer (MR) with varying levels of lactose and the increased supply of total solids (from 750 to 960 g/d) on performance, blood metabolites, and health of Holstein male calves during the preweaning period. Methods: Forty newborn Holstein calves (10 per treatment) were blocked according to birth weight and date of birth and distributed in a randomized block design to different liquid diets: Whole milk powder (WMP) diluted to 125 g/L solids; MR with 48% lactose (48L), diluted to 125 g/L solids; MR with 53% lactose (53L), diluted to 125 g/L solids; 53L MR corrected to 160 g/L solids (16TS) by the inclusion of a solid corrector. Calves were individually housed in wood hutches, fed 6 L/d of the liquid diet, and had free water and starter concentrate access. The study lasted 56 days. Results: Liquid diet intake was higher for calves fed 16TS than for other treatments. Calves fed 16TS presented higher protein and fat intake, followed by those fed WMP and the 48L or 53L MRs. Lactose intake was higher for 16TS-fed calves, followed by 53L, 48L, and WMP-fed calves. Starter and total dry matter intake did not differ among liquid diets. The average daily gain was higher for 16TS than 48L-fed calves, with the other treatments being intermediary. The lowest feed efficiency was observed for calves fed 48L. No effects on health were observed, as well as on selected blood metabolites, except for albumin concentration, which was higher for calves fed 16TS and WMP. Conclusion: Higher total solids content (160 g/L) in MR increases nutrient intake and consequently improves the performance of dairy calves. Feeding MRs with levels of lactose up to 53% of the DM had no deleterious effect on the performance or health of the calves.
Operation characteristics of the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process with electro-flotation (EF) as a solid liquid separation method (EF-SBR) were investigated. EF-SBR process showed excellent solid-liquid separation performance which enabled to separate biosolids from liquid phase within 30 min and to extend cyclic reaction time. Although influent organic loading rate was increased stepwise from 5 to 15 g COD/day, food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio could be maintained about 0.3 g COD/g VSS/day in EF-SBR because biomass concentration could be easily controlled at desired level by EF. However, it was impossible to increase biomass concentration at the same level in control SBR (C-SBR) process because solid-liquid separation by gravity settling showed a limitation at higher mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration with 60 min of settling time. Total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal efficiency of EF-SBR process was not decreased although influent organic loading rate became 3 times higher than initial value. However, it was seriously deteriorated in C-SBR process after increasing the rate over 10 g COD/day, which was accounted for insufficient organic removal by relatively higher food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio as well as biosolids wash-out by a limitation of gravity sedimentation.
Effects of enzymatic hydrolysis of polysaccharides with using three commercial mixed enzymes (Ultrazyme, Celluclast, Viscozyme) were investigated on supernatant ratio, solid yields and viscosity of sea mustard extracts. The result showed that enzymatic hydrolysis prior to extraction increased the solids concentration up to 27.3% and the solids yield up to 14.0%. However the supernatant ratio after centrifugation of the sea mustard suspension was rather reduced. The viscosity of the extracts was significantly increased during initial enzymatic hydrolysis.
Aerobic treatment of animal slurries represents an increasingly popular option for farmers in the management of animal wastes. This study was performed to find out the chemical characteristics of dairy slurry associated with liquid-solid separation. Total solids concentration varies widely depending on the slurry manure handling systems. Hydrogen ion exponent(pH), volatile solids(VS), ammonia nitrogen(NH$_3$-N), nitrate nitrogen (NO$_3$-N), and chemical oxygen demand(COD) essentially depends on the total solids content of animal liquid wastes. Total solids content of the dairy slurry ranges from 6.6 to 7.5% depending on the feed slurry and separator. Separated liquids from dairy slurry have been successfully downed for up to about 21, 900mg/$\ell$ of the COD value. It has also been found that separated slurry decreased from 37.8 to 26.0mg/$\ell$ of the NO$_3$-N concentration.
Contamination of soil and groundwater by the compounds of hydrocarbon petroleum has been widely accepted as the main cause that harms the environments and health. To remove those pollutants, absorbing clothes, activated carbons, or oil-water separation devices with the gravity method are employed for treatment. However, those materials and devices cannot remove the emulsion pollutants despite of their efficiency for removing free products. Therefore, we investigated the problems which occur during the groundwater treatment for the highly concentrated suspended solid particles, which can be resulted from excavation, and to propose methods to remove TPH(Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon). After coagulation experiment with high molecular polymers, the concentration of SS(Suspended Solids) and COD(Chemical Oxygen Demand) turned to satisfy the groundwater quality criteria within 5 minutes while the concentration of TPH failed to meet the water quality standard of effluent. Consequently, the water quality criteria for effluent could not be met by single DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) process. However all water quality criteria could be satisfied after 20 minutes when coagulation reactions are carried out simultaneously in the DAF reactor.
