  • The proper parameters in a twin roll strip casting are important to obtain the stabilization of the Mg sheet. What is examined in this paper is the quantitative relationships of the important control parameters such as the roll speed, height of pool region, outlet size of nozzle, solidification profile and the final point of solidification in a twin roll strip casting Unsteady conservation equations were used for transport phenomena in the pool region of a twin roll strip casting in order to predict a velocity, temperature distributions of fields and a solidification process of molten magnesium. The energy equation of cooling roll Is solved simultaneously with the conservation equations of molten magnesium In order to consider the heat transfer through the cooling roil. The finite difference method (2-D) and the finite element method (2-D) are used in the analysis of pool region and cooling roil to reduce computing time and to improve the accuracy of calculation respectively.

Effect of Critical Cooling Rate on the Formation of Intermetallic Phase During Rapid Solidification of FeNbHfBPC Alloy

  • 진공 가스분사법으로 제조된 Fe75B13P5Nb2Hf1C4 합금의 응고중 액상의 크기와 이에 따른 냉각속도의 변화가 정출상의 형성에 미치는 영향에 대한 고찰을 하였다. 고온 액상에서 동일한 조건으로 응고된 서로 다른 크기의 액상이 구형의 분말형태로 응고될 때 크기에 따른 임계냉각속도의 차이를 계산하였으며, 액상의 평균 반지름이 3배정도 크기 차이가 날 경우 고상으로 변태할 때 임계냉각속도가 13.5배까지 차이가 나는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 임계냉각 속도의 차이에 따른 정출상의 형성과 정출상의 형태와 크기에 따른 탄화물의 형성 거동을 조사하여 열역학 계산으로 예측된 결과와 비교 분석하였으며, 분말입자의 크기가 20~45 마이크론일 경우 Hf과 Nb이 포함된 MC타입의 탄화물이 초정으로 형성 되는 것을 알 수 있었으며 이때 Hf과 Nb의 비율은 합금의 조성 및 냉각속도에 따라 변화됨을 관찰 할 수 있었다.

  • 사용후핵연료 파이로프로세싱에서 발생하는 LiCl-KCl 공융염폐기물의 부피를 최소화하고 최종적으로 잔류하는 폐기물을 비교적 낮은 온도에서 안정한 형태로 고화하고자 희토류 핵종 염화물을 함유한 LiCl-KCl 공융염을 이용하여 인산화/증류 및 세라믹 고화의 일련공정을 수행하였다. LiCl-KCl 공융염 내 희토류 염화물은 혼합인산화제($Li_3PO_4-K_3PO_4$)를 이용한 인산화 및 공융염 감압증류공정을 통하여 99% 이상을 인산화물 형태로 전환/분리할 수 있었고, 분리한 희토류 인산화물은 고화매질로서 LIP(Lead Iron Phosphate)를 이용하여 $1,050^{\circ}C$에서 균질하고 치밀한 형태의 고화체로 제조할 수 있었으며, 최종적으로 발생하는 방사성 폐기물 부피를 10% 이하로 감용할 수 있음을 확인하였다.

Numerical analysis of melt migration and solidification behavior in LBR severe accident with MPS method

  • In Lead-based reactor (LBR) severe accident, the meltdown and migration inside the reactor core will lead to fuel fragment concentration, which may further cause re-criticality and even core disintegration. Accurately predicting the migration and solidification behavior of melt in LBR severe accidents is of prime importance for safety analysis of LBR. In this study, the Moving Particle Semi-implicit (MPS) method is validated and used to simulate the migration and solidification behavior. Two main surface tension models are validated and compared. Meanwhile, the MPS method is validated by the L-plate solidification test. Based on the improved MPS method, the migration and solidification behavior of melt in LBR severe accident was studied furthermore. In the Pb-Bi coolant, the melt flows upward due to density difference. The migration and solidification behavior are greatly affected by the surface tension and viscous resistance varying with enthalpy. The whole movement process can be divided into three stages depending on the change in velocity. The heat transfer of core melt is determined jointly by two heat transfer modes: flow heat transfer and solid conductivity. Generally, the research results indicate that the MPS method has unique advantage in studying the migration and solidification behavior in LBR severe accident.

수평식 연속주조법에 제조된 무산소동의 방향성 응고에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Unidirectional Solidification of Oxygen Free Copper by the Horizontal Continuous Casting Process)

  • The horizontal continuous casting process with the heated mold was applied to obtain the unidirectionally solidified rods($4{\sim}8mm$ dia.) of pure copper with good surface quality. The results could be summarized as follows. 1. The unidirectional solidification of pure copper rods with good surface(mirror surface) quality could be obtained by placing the S/L interface inside the heated mold cavity even though the cast copper rods were covered with thin copper oxide layer. 2. The casting speed for 4mm dia. rods with mirror surfaces was affected significantly by the mold-cooler distance rather than the cooling flow rate when other casting conditions were fixed. 3. The casting speed was the main factor affecting the oxidation of copper during the continuous casting and the thickness of copper oxide layer decreased almost linearly as the casting speed increased.

급속응고한 Ag-Sn-In 미세조직에 미치는 Sn 함량 변화의 영향 (The Effect of the Sn Amounts on the Microstructure of Rapidly Solidified Ag-Sn-In Alloys)

  • Contact material is widely used as electrical parts. Ag-Cd alloy has a good wear resistance and stable contact resistance. But the disadvantages of Ag-Cd alloy are coarse Cd oxides and harmful metal, Cd. To solve the disadvantages of that, Ag-Sn alloy that has stable and fine Sn oxide at high temperature has been developed. In order to optimize Sn amount that affects the formation of the oxide layer on the surface, we worked for the microstructures and properties of Ag-Sn material fabricated by rapid solidification process. The experimental procedure were melting using high frequency induction, melt spinning, and internal oxidation. We have shown that the optimized Sn amount for high hardness is 7.09 wt%Sn. Surface oxide layer forms when Sn amount is over 9.45 wt%. The size of Sn oxide is 20 nm.

대형 가스터빈 부품의 정밀주조 응고해석 (Process Simulation of Investment Casting for Large Gas Turbine Component)

  • The vacuum investment casting process for a large gas turbine component, Inner Preswirl Support (IPS), was simulated by using commercial FEM package ProCAST(TM) with view factor radiation method. The solid fraction in mushy zone was directly measured by Differential thermal analysis(DTA-DSC mode). Three types gating design. considering liquid flow and heat release through it. were proposed. Solidification had begun at the ribs or thin sections of the IPS casting and advanced further through the upper and lower gates. The computed temperature gradient G and G/R values at 70% solidified temperature were used for prediction of microshrinkage formation during casting. The effect of mold preheat on the thermal history of the casting displayed minute effect on the microshrinkage formation.

  • In the steel industries, direct rolling process for production of strip from molten metal has been investigated to simplify processes, to minimize energy consumption, and to improve quality of the strip. In this study, two kinds of practicable scale cooling rollers are proposed. And heat transfer analysis of pool region and cooling roller considering flow of molten metal and roll rotation respectively using the finite element method are performed to obtain the proper initial condition and to observe cooling characteristics of cooling roller. From the results, variations of solidification final points and temperature distribution in roller are observed quantitatively according to roll rotation.

  • This paper presents a low temperature excimer-laser-crystallization that produces directionally solidified microstructure in Si thin films. The process involves (1) a complete melting of selected area via irradiation through a patterned mask. and (2) a precisely controlled pulse translation of the sample with respect to the mask over a distance shorter than the superlateral growth(SLG) distance. (3) lateral growth extended over a number of iterative steps. Grains that grow continuously to the vertical direction were demonstrated. We discuss sequential lateral solidification principle, experiment.

FMC법에서 모형 도형제가 순알루미늄 주물의 응고와 주형의 열적거동에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Pattern Coatings on the Solidification of Pure Aluminum Castings and the Thermal Behavior of Molds in FMC Processes)

  • Full mold casting process is a new technique offering numerous advantages and promising possibilities. The present study is aimed to bring out the results of experiments carried out to study the effect of pattern coatings on the solidification of 99.5% pure aluminum plate-shaped castings in the various sand molds and the thermal behavior of the molds. The results of the investigation indicate that (i) with increase in pattern coating thickness, the relative chilling power decreases gradually for silica and increases for zircon coating, and (ii) the application of a pattern coating significantly reduces the maximum interface temperature by the mold which is more pronounced in the case of thinner mold wall. The investigation also indicates that Chvorinov's rule is not found to be valid for the casting in the full mold, with or without pattern coating. Therefore in full mold process, the pattern coating thickness will be a very important parameter in the study of thermal behavior.
