  • The use of microwaves as the energy source for synthesis and sintering of ceramics offers substantial advantages compared to conventional gas-fired and electric resistance furnaces. Benefits include much shorter processing times and reaching the sintering temperature more quickly, resulting in superior final product quality. Most oxide ceramics poorly interact with microwave irradiation at low temperatures; thus, a more complex setup including a susceptor is needed, which makes the whole process very complicated. This investigation pursued a new approach, which enabled us to use microwave irradiation directly in poorly coupled oxides. In many solid-state electrochemical devices, the support is either metal or can be reduced to metal. Metal powders in the support can act as an internal susceptor and heat the entire cell. Then sufficient interaction of microwave irradiation and ceramic material can occur as the sample temperature increases. This microwave heating and exothermic reaction of oxidation of the support can sinter the ceramic very efficiently without any external susceptor. In this study, yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and a Ni-YSZ cermet support were used as an example. The cermet was used as the support, and a YSZ electrolyte was coated and sintered directly using microwave irradiation without the use of any susceptor. The results were compared to a similar cell prepared using a conventional electric furnace. The leakage test and full cell power measurement results revealed a fully leak-free electrolyte. Scanning electron microscopy and density measurements show that microwave sintered samples have lower open porosity in the electrode support than conventional heat treatment. This technique offers an efficient way to directly use microwave irradiation to sinter thin film ceramics without a susceptor.

  • In this study, a bubbling fluidized-bed reactor was used to study $CO_2$ capture from flue gas using a potassium-based dry sorbent. A dry sorbent, manufactured by the Korea Electric Power Research Institute, consists of 35% of $K_2CO_3$ for $CO_2$ absorption and 65% of supporters for mechanical strength. $H_2O$, a reactant of the carbonation reaction, was supplied in the reactor as a form of saturated water vapor at a given temperature. The experiment of the regeneration reaction was performed by raising up to a given temperature using $N_2$ as a fluidization gas. It was indicated that sorption capacity and regenerability of dry sorbents showed high-efficiency at $1.97\;mol\;H_2O/mol\;CO_2$ and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The regenerated sorbent samples were analyzed by TGA to confirm the extent of the reaction. When the regeneration temperature was $150^{\circ}C$, the regenerability of dry sorbents was about 60%, which was capable of applying those sorbents to a two-interconnected fluidized-bed reactor system with continuous solid circulation. The results obtained in this study can be used as basic data for designing and operating a large scale $CO_2$ capture process with two fluidized-bed reactors.

  • We have investigated sintering effects on Fe/Mo ordering and magnetoresistance (MR) in double perovskite-reflection lines due to $Sr_2FeMoO_6$ (SFMO). Polycrystalline samples have been prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction by sintering in a stream of 5% $H_2/Ar$ gas. All samples are single phase and exhibit a series of superstructurecation ordering at Fe and Mo sites. As sintering temperature increases from 900 to $1300^{\circ}C$, the degree of Fe/Mo ordering increases from 82 to 92%, magnetization (15 K, 7 kOe) increases from 1.6 to 2.7 ${\mu}_B/f.u.,$ and Curie temperature increases at a rate of 4.3 K/% with the increase of Fe/Mo ordering ratio. The magnitude of MR measured at 5 K is 19% for sample prepared at $1000^{\circ}C$ with magnetic fields of 7 kOe. The observed MR is proportional to the square of magnetization indicating that the MR feature in SFMO is explained by the spin-polarized tunneling at grain boundaries.

  • In order to analyze the sensitivity on the pulverized coal flames of the several variables, a numerical study was conducted at the gasification process. Eulerian approach is used for the gas phase, whereas lagrangian approach is used for the solid phase. Turbulence is modeled using the standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ model. The turbulent combustion incorporates eddy dissipation model. The radiation was solved using a Monte-Carlo method. One-step two-reaction model was employed for the devolatilization of Kideco coal. In pulverized flame of long liftoff height, the initial turbulent intensity seriously affects the position of flame front. The radiation heat transfer and wall heat loss ratio distort the temperature distributions along the reactor wall, but do not influence the reactor performance such as coal conversion, residence time and flame front position. The primary/secondary momentum ratio affects the position of flame front, but the coal burnout is only slightly influenced. The momentum ratio is a variable only associated with the flame stabilization such as flame front position. The addition of steam in the reactor has a detrimental effect on all the aspects, particularly reactor temperature and coal burnout.

  • Ultrafine TEX>$Al_2O_3$ powders were prepared from $AlCl_3$ and $Al_2(SO_4)_3$3 by using inductively coupled plasma (lCP) of ultrahigh temperature (above 5000 K) in heat source. The prepared $Al_2O_3$ powders had ${\alpha} - group ({\alpha}, {wdelta} ;and; {\theta})$ phase, a narrow size distribution and around 20 nm in meansize. It could be suggested that gas - solid reaction growth and interparticle sintering occured at the center of ICP tail flame (X = 500 mm) through the results of deposited aggregates - flock, whisker and platy on MgO polycrystal plate. And the formation mechanism of $Al_2O_3$ powders In spray - ICP reactor were described from upper results.

  • A microwave plasma torch at the atmospheric pressure by making use of magnetrons operated at the 2.45 GHz and used in a home microwave oven has been developed. This electrodeless torch can be used to various areas, including industrial, environmental and military applications. Although the microwave plasma torch has many applications, we in the present work focused on the microwave plasma torch operated in pure steam and several applications, which may be used in future and right now. For example, a high-temperature steam microwave plasma torch may have a potential application of the hydrocarbon fuel reforming at one atmospheric pressure. Moreover, the radicals including hydrogen, oxygen and hydroxide molecules are abundantly available in the steam torch, dramatically enhancing the reaction speed. Also, the microwave plasma torch can be used as a high-temperature, large-volume plasma burner by injecting hydrocarbon fuels in gas, liquid, and solid into the plasma flame. Lastly, we briefly report an underway research, which is remediation of soils contaminated with oils, volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, etc.

  • $ZrV_{0.7}Mn_{0.5}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy is attractive for anode material in Ni/MH secondary battery because of its large hydrogen storage capacity in gas-solid reaction and long cycling durability in KOH electrolyte. In this work, in order to further improve the discharge performance of this alloy electrode, the alloy was annealed by optimal condition which is for 12 hours at $1000^{\circ}C$. The alloy annealed under optimal condition had higher rate capability and discharge capacity than as-cast one. The microstructure of the as-cast and annealed alloy was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Ni content in the matrix was increased, being this homogenized after annealing. Additionally, The measurement of the surface area by B.E.T. analysis showed that there was little difference as-cast and annealed alloy. Therefore, improvement in the rate capability of the annealed alloy is due to increase of Ni content in the matrix.

  • A numerical investigation of the fuel concentration field in a fluidized bed has been carried out for the scale-up of a fluidized bed combustor (FBC). A two-dimensional transient model is developed using the two-phase fluidization, a simple chemical reaction, and lateral solid mixing theories. The uniformity of fuel concentration distributions is controlled by the location and the number of fuel feeders, fluidizing velocities and the bed-heights. While larger bubbles owing to greater fluidizing velocities enhance the fuel-dispersion in the bed, they have adverse effects on fuel combustion and thus result in the increase of fuel concentration, since a greater bubble means a larger bypass which reduces gas-exchange rates between bubble and emulsion phases. Average or maximum values of the bed fuel concentration are utilized as criteria for the scale-up from a pilot/lab-scale to a commercial-size bed.

  • A colorimetric sensor was investigated to achieve a low-cost warning device for harmful gaseous formaldehyde (HCHO). The sensor is based on selective reactions between hydroxylamine sulfate and HCHO, leading to the production of sulfuric acid. The produced acid results in color-changing response through the acid-base reaction with dye molecules impregnated on a solid membrane substrate. For attaining this purpose, sensors were fabricated by drop-casting a dye solution prepared using different pH indicators on various commercially available polymer sheets, and their colorimetric responses were evaluated in terms of sensitivity and reliability. The colorimetric sensor using bromophenol blue (BPB) and nylon sheet was found to exhibit the best performance in HCHO detection. An initial bluish green of a sensor was changed to yellow when exposed to gaseous formaldehyde. The color change was recorded using an office scanner and further analyzed in term of RGB distance for quantifying sensor's response at different HCHO(g) concentrations. It exhibited a recognizable colorimetric response even at 50 ppb, being lower than WHO's standard of 80 ppb. In addition, the sensor was found to have quite good selectivity in HCHO detection under the presence of common volatile organic compounds such as ethanol, toluene, and hexane.

  • ZnO and $SnO_2$, well-known wide direct band-gap semiconductors, have been considered as the most promising functional materials due to their highly sensitive gas sensing and excellent optical properties. ZnO/$SnO_2$ epitaxial hetrostructure exhibited unique luminescence properties in contrast with individual tetra-pod ZnO and $SnO_2$ nanostructures. Polycrystalline $SnO_2$-based samples $Zn_xSn_{1-x}O_2$(x=0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05) were prepared by solid state reaction and eco-friendly hydrothermal techniques. Scanning electron microscopy equipped with electron dispersive x-ray spectra confirms the formation of near stoichiometric $Zn_xSn_{1-x}O_2$ nanorods of diameter ~10 nm. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the rutile structure, except for x=0.07, which may have a small part of $Zn_2SnO_4$ as a secondary phase.
