  • In this study, to repair damaged economizer fin tubes on ships, sealing treatment was performed after applying arc thermal spray coating technology using Inconel 625. A solid particle erosion (SPE) experiment was conducted according to ASTM G76-05 to evaluate the durability of the substrate, thermal spray coating (TSC), and thermal spray coating+sealing treatment (TSC+Sealing) specimens. The surface damage shape was observed using a scanning electron microscope and 3D laser microscope, and the durability was evaluated through the weight loss and surface roughness analysis. Consequently, the durability of the substrate was superior to that of TSC and TSC+Sealing, which was believed to be owing to numerous pore defects in the TSC layer. In addition, the mechanism of solid particle erosion damage was accompanied by plastic deformation and fatigue, which were the characteristics of ductile materials in the case of the substrate, and the tendency of brittle fracture in the case of TSC and TSC+Sealing was confirmed.

  • The SCR catalyst in coal-fired power plant is eroded by the collision of fly ash on the catalyst surface. However the erosion of SCR catalyst by the collision of fly ash has not been fully studied, especially in terms of fluid dynamics. Hence, in the present study, we focus on the gas and solid flows inside the SCR catalyst duct and their consequent effect on the erosion characteristics. For this purpose, computational fluid dynamics is applied to investigate the two-phase flows and to evaluate the erosion rate for different flow and particle injection conditions. Also, the erosion rate and pressure drop of commonly used square shape are compared with equilateral triangle and hexagon shapes. The pressure drop of SCR catalyst is increased when SCR catalyst surface area per unit volume increases. The erosion rate of SCR catalyst is enhanced when the particle velocity, mass flow rate of particle, particle diameter and cell density of SCR catalyst are increased. From the results, the pressure drop and erosion rate at the catalyst surface can be minimized by reducing cell density of SCR catalyst to decrease particle velocity and number of particle impacts.

  • In this study, the influence of Al particle size, as an additive for solid propellant, on the mechanical erosion of the carbon-composite nozzle was evaluated. A new model which can predict the size and distribution of the agglomerated reaction product($Al(l)/Al_2O_3(l)$) was established, and the size of agglomerate were calculated according to the various initial size of Al in the solid propellant. With predicted results of the model, subsequently, the characteristics of mechanical erosion on the carbon-composite nozzle was estimated using a commercial CFD software, STAR CCM+. The result shows that the smaller the initial Al particles are, in the solid propellant, the lower is the mechanical erosion rate of the composite nozzle wall, especially for the nano-size Al particle.

  • A comprehensive review on sliding and solid particle erosion wear characteristics of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics and SiC composites is provided. Sliding or erosion wear behavior of ceramics is dependent on various material characteristics as well as test parameters. Effects of microstructural and mechanical properties of SiC ceramics are particularly focused to understand tribological performance of SiC ceramics. Results obtained between varieties of pairs of SiC ceramics indicate complexity in understanding dominant mechanisms of material removal. Wear mechanisms during sliding are mainly divided in two groups as mechanical and tribochemical. In solid particle erosion conditions, wear mechanisms of SiC ceramics are explained by elastic-plastic deformation controlled micro-fracture on the surface followed by radial-lateral crack propagation beneath the plastic zone.

  • The components in ultra super critical (USC) steam turbine, which is under development for high efficient power generation, are encountering harsher solid particle erosion by iron oxide scales than ones in the existing steam turbines. Therefore, the currently used boride coating will not be able to hold effective protection from particle erosion in USC system and should be replaced by new particle erosion resistant coatings. One of the best protective coatings developed for USC steam turbine parts was found to be vanadium-boride (V-boride) coating which has a hardness of about 3000 HV, much higher than that of boride, 1600~2000 HV. In order to evaluate particle erosion resistance of the various coatings such as V-boride, boride and Cr-carbide coatings at high temperature, particle erosion test equipments were designed and manufactured. In addition, erosion particle velocity was simulated using FLUENT software based on semi-implicity method for pressure linked equations revised (SIMPLER). Based on experimental results of this work, the vanadium-boride coating was found to be superior to others and to be a candidate coating to replace the boride coating.

  • l2wt%Cr Steel has been applied on turbine bucket and nozzle partition material of power plant. Turbine bucket and nozzle get damaged by solid particle within steam, therefore they are protected by surface treatments such as ion nitriding, boriding and chrome carbide HVOF spray coating. In this study, solid particle erosion(SPE) characteristics after these surface treatments are examined at operating temperature 540$^{\circ}C$ and 590$^{\circ}C$ of fossil power plant and the mechanism of damage was studied. Erosion of 12wt%Cr steel is originated by micro cutting and that of boriding and chrome carbide HVOF spray is originated by these mechanism - repeating collision, crack initiation and propagation. As the results of SPE test at 540$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}$ impact angle that is the most commonly occurred in power plant, Boriding had the best SPE -resistance property, Cr$_2$C$_3$-25(Ni20Cr) HVOF spayed and ion nitrided samples were also better than bare metals(l2wt%Cr Steels). At 590$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}$ impact angle, Boriding had also the most superior characteristic and HVOF spay sample was better than bare metal.

  • In this paper, durability evaluation and surface damage mechanism were investigated through solid particle erosion (SPE) test after applying hot-dip aluminizing (HDA) technology for the purpose of maintenance of marine economizer tube. Damaged surface shape was analyzed using SEM and 3D microscope. Compositional changes and microstructure of the HDA layer were analyzed through EDS and XRD. Durability was evaluated by analyzing weight loss and surface damage depth after SPE. HDA was confirmed to have a two-layer structure of Al and Al5Fe2. HDA+HT was made into a single alloy layer of Al5Fe2 by diffusion treatment. In the microstructure of HDA+HT, void and crack defect were induced during the crystal phase transformation process. The SPE damage mechanism depends on material properties. Plastic deformation occurred in the substrate and HDA due to ductility, whereas weight loss due to brittleness occurred significantly in HDA+HT. As a result, the substrate and HDA showed better SPE resistance than HDA+HT.

  • The present study investigates numerically particle laden flow through compressor cascades and a rocket nozzle. Engines are affected by various particles which are suspending in the atmosphere. Especially in the case of aircraft aviating in volcanic, industrial and desert region including many particles, each components of engine system are damaged severely. That damage modes are erosion of compressor blading and rotor path components, partial or total blockage of cooling passage and engine control system degradation. Numerical prediction and experimental data, erosion rates are predicted for two materials - ceramic, soft metal - on compressor blade surface. Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) Particles included in solid rocket propelant make ablative the rocket motor nozzle and imped the expansion processes of propulsion. By the definition of particle deposition efficiency, characteristics of particles impaction are considered quantitatively Stoke number is defined over the various particle sizes and particle trajectories are treated by Lagrangian approach. Particle stability is considered by definition of Weber number in rocket nozzle and particle breakup and evaporation is simulated in a rocket nozzle.

  • In this research, experimental study about size effect of solid particles on erosion resistance is presented. A high-density polyethylene particle with a mm-sized diameter is accelerated using a two-stage light gas gun up to Mach number of approximately 3.0. An accelerated particle impacts aluminum alloy such as Al1050 and Al6061 T6, and infrared windows such as ZnS and sapphire specimens. For the aluminum alloy, craters that form on the surface of the specimens are measured to characterize the erosion resistance of the material. For the infrared windows, repetitive tests are conducted until a linear or circumferential crack is found to create damage threshold curves that define a material's erosive resistance. From the comparison of test data for various sizes of high-density polyethylene particles, it is found that erosion resistance of material is linearly dependent on the size of particles.

  • The compositions, the gas properties in motor chamber and the aluminum oxide (Al2O3) particle size for two kinds of solid propellants with approximately 20% aluminum powder have been investigated. The SEM photographs of $Al_2O_3$ taken from nozzle entrance liner show that the aluminized PCP propellant with 47% volumetric fraction AP/HNIW and bimodal oxidizer 200-5 ${\mu}m$ can offer greater possibility for increasing aluminum agglomeration than the aluminized HTPB propellant with 64% volumetric fraction AP and trimodal oxidizer 400-200-6 ${\mu}m$. The nozzle entrance liner of solid rocket motor with the PCP propellant shows greater erosion at 4 circumferential sections in line with grain slots due to the impingement of large particles, but that with the HTPB propellant shows uniform erosion with circumferential angle.
