  • Combustion performance of an internally cycloned circulating fluidized bed for paper sludge was discussed through a series of batch type experiments. Operation parameters such as water content, feeding mass of sludge and secondary air injection rate were varied to find out the effect on the combustion performance, which was examined with carbon conversion rate and pollutant emission such as CO and NOx. A conventional solid fuel reaction was observed in the experiments of varying water content and feeding mass of the sludge, which is characterized with kinetic limited reaction zone, diffusion limited reaction zone and transition zone. Secondary air injection with swirl enhances the mixing of the gas phase as well as the solid phase, and improves combustion efficiency accompanied with higher carbon conversion rate and lower pollutant emission rate.

  • This research investigates the effect of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) dimensions in terms of diameter on the mechanical properties (longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus) of the simulated nanocomposites by molecular dynamics (MDs) method. MDs utilized to create nanocomposite models consisting of five case studies of SWCNTs with different chiralities (5, 0), (10, 0), (15, 0), (20, 0) and (25, 0) as the reinforcement and using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) as the common matrix. The results show that with increasing of SWCNTs diameter, the mechanical and physical properties increase. It is important that with the increasing of SWCNTs diameter, density, longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus, shear modulus, poisson's ratio, and bulk modulus of simulated nanocomposite from (5, 0) to (25, 0) approximately becomes 1.54, 3, 2, 1.43, 1.11 and 1.75 times more than (5, 0), respectively. Then to validate the results, the stiffness matrix is obtained by Materials studio software.

  • Si-SiC-graphite composites were developed by incorporating solid lubricant graphite into Si-SiC, in the light of improving tribological properties of Si-SiC ceramics. Si-SiC-graphite composites were fabricated by infilterating silicon melt into the mixture of α-SiC, carbon black and graphite powder at 1750℃ under 3 Torr. The particle size of graphite was in the range of 150 to 500㎛, and the loading content of graphite was 0, 20, 25, 30, 35 vol% in the mixture of α-SiC and carbon black. The mechanical and tribological properties of this composites were studied. The density, hardness, flexural strength, compressive strength and Young's modulus were decreased with increasing of graphite content. An additiion of solid-lubricant graphite up to 30 vol% has improved tribological properties of Si-SiC ceramics without considerable degradation of mechanical properties.

  • The microstructure of the inconel 690 alloy was varied by the solution treatment and the thermal treatment. The specimens having different microstructures were examined in order to understand the strengthening mechanism of the inconel 690. The level of supersaturation of carbon in the solid solution was increased by applying a longer solution treatment at 115$0^{\circ}C$. As increased carbon content in the solid solution, more carbides precipitated during the thermal treatment at $700^{\circ}C$. Since the carbides played a role of obstacle on the movement of dislocations, a higher tensile strength was obtained in the sample having a large number of carbider. The accumulation of dislocations at the grain boundary carbides caused the development of intergranular fracture which led to a lower elongation.

  • In this paper, the deflection and buckling analyses of porous nano-composite piezoelectric plate reinforced by carbon nanotube (CNT) are studied. The equations of equilibrium using energy method are derived from principle of minimum total potential energy. In the research, the non-local strain gradient theory is employed to consider size dependent effect for porous nanocomposite piezoelectric plate. The effects of material length scale parameter, Eringen's nonlocal parameter, porosity coefficient and aspect ratio on the deflection and critical buckling load are investigated. The results indicate that the effect of porosity coefficient on the increase of the deflection and critical buckling load is greatly higher than the other parameters effect, and size effect including nonlocal parameter and the material length scale parameter have a lower effect on the deflection increase with respect to the porosity coefficient, respectively and vice versa for critical buckling load. Porous nanocomposites are used in various engineering fields such as aerospace, medical industries and water refinery.

  • In the previously reported Part I and Part II, the experimental results in the frictional machining under liquid atmospheres to obtain the best surface roughness were showed. In the present study the frictional machining was carried out in gas atmospheres such as air, oxygen, dioxide carbon and argon, and in solid lubricant atmosphere of graphite powder. The results were compared with those of Part I and Part II. The material to be tested and machining conditions were made identical with Part I and Part II. The best surface roughness obtained in the above gas and solid lubricant atmospheres was worse than the liquid atmospheres but the contact pressure to minimize the surface roughness was considerably low. The best surface roughness in the present study was obtained in the atmospheres of dioxide carbon and graphite powder and the worst one was in oxygen and argon gas.

  • The solid state cesium ion beam sputter deposition system has been developed for negative carbon ion beam deposition. The negative carbon ion beams are effectively produced by cesium ion bombardment. The C-ion beam current and deposition energy can be independently controlled for the deposition of a-D films. This system is very compact, reliable and high flux without any gas discharge or plasma and has been successfully used in the studies of the ion beam deposited amorphous diamond(a-D)

  • This study focuses on the fabrication of a WC/Co composite powder from the oxide of WC/Co hardmetal scrap using solid carbon in a hydrogen gas atmosphere for the recycling of WC/Co hardmetal. Mixed powders are manufactured by mechanically milling the oxide powder of WC-13 wt% Co hardmetal scrap and carbon black with varying powder/ball weight ratios. The oxide powder of WC-13 wt% Co hardmetal scrap consists of $WO_3$ and $CoWO_4$. The mixed powder mechanically milled at a lower powder/ball weight ratio (high mechanical milling energy) has a more rapid carbothermal reduction reaction in the formation of WC and Co phases compared with that mechanically milled at a higher powder/ball weight ratio (lower mechanical milling energy). The WC/Co composite powder is fabricated at $900^{\circ}C$ for 6 h from the oxide of WC/Co hardmetal scrap using solid carbon in a hydrogen gas atmosphere. The fabricated WC/Co composite powder has a particle size of approximately $0.25-0.5{\mu}m$.

  • The dielectric relaxation characteristics of composites with different concentrations of carbon nanotubes loaded in an epoxy polymer matrix has been studied as a function of frequency over a wide range (1 Hz~10 MHz) at room temperature. Two characterization techniques were used in this work to measure and calculate the dimensionality parameters: small angle neutron scattering and impedance spectroscopy. The results obtained from both methods are in good agreement, indicating the reliability of the estimated fractal dimension, despite of the difference in the length scales accessed by the two techniques.
