The effects of the annealing parameters on microstructures were examined in a cold-rolled high strength steel containing 0.1% C, 0.5% Si, 1.5% Mn, and 0.04% Nb. It was impossible to avoid martensite in the microstructure even though the continuous annealing parameters were controlled. This indicates that the alloying elements such as silicon and manganese contributing to manganese equivalent($Mn_{eq}$) should be reduced to produce the ferrite-pearlite microstructure for the solid solution and precipitation hardened steel. It was found that a decrease in the rapid cooling temperature to $520^{\circ}C$ was effective to change the microstructure from ferrite-martensite to ferrite-pearlite-martensite. Typical dual-phase properties exhibiting a low yield ratio and a continuous yielding behavior were obtained when the rapid cooling temperature was in the range of $680^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. The critical volume fraction of martensite for the typical properties of dual-phase steel was about 11 percent.
The effect of precipitation and dissolution of Si on the thermal diffusivity in the Al-Si alloy system is reported in this study and solution heat treatment followed by aging treatment is carried out to determine the effects of heat treatment on the thermal characteristics. The solution treatment is performed at 535 ℃ for 4 and 10 h and then the specimens are cooled by rapid quenching. The samples are aged at 300 ℃ for 4 h to precipitate Si solute. The addition of 9 wt% silicon contents makes the thermal diffusivity decrease from 78 to 74 mm/s2 in the cases of solid solution treated and quenched samples. After quenching and aging, the Si solute precipitates on the Al matrix and increases the thermal diffusivity compared with that after the quenched state. In particular, the increase of the thermal diffusivity is equal to 10 mm/s2 without relation to the Si contents in the Al-Si alloy, which seems to corresponded to solute amount of Si 1 wt% in the Al matrix.
Many researchers have studied on the precipitation control after solution treatment to improve the damping capacity without decreasing the strength. However, studies on the damping capacity and microstructure changes after deformation in the solid solution strengthening alloys were inadequate, such as the Al-Zn series magnesium alloys. Therefore, in order to investigate the effect of annealing condition on microstructure change and damping a capacity of AZ61 magnesium alloy. In this study, it was confirmed that the microstructure changes affect the damping capacity and hardness when annealed AZ61 alloy. AZ61 magnesium alloy was rolled at $400^{\circ}C$ with rolling reduction of 30%. These specimens were annealed at $350^{\circ}C$ to $450^{\circ}C$ for 30-180 minutes. After annealing, microstructure was observed by using optical microscopy, and damping capacity was measured by using internal friction measurement machine. Hardness was measured by Vickers hardness tester under a condition of 0.3 N. In this study, static recrystallization was observed regardless of the annealing conditions. In addition, uniform equiaxed grain structure was developed by annealing treatment. Hardness is decreased with increasing grain size. This is associated with Hall-Petch equation and static recrystallization. In case of damping capacity, bigger grain size show the larger damping capacity.

The purpose of this study is to predict the residual stress in Al6061 during T6 heat treatment. In this study, the variable residual stress in case of the solid solution($530^{\circ}C$, 2h) and artificial ageing($175^{\circ}C$, 9h) of Al6061 subjected to T6 heat treatment is determined at different ageing times. A heat treatment experiment is conducted to determine the heat transfer coefficient, on the basis of which the residual stress during the T6 heat treatment is predicted. In order to take into account the relaxation of residual stress during artificial ageing, a Zener-Wert-Avrami function is used and elasto-plastic nonlinear analysis is conducted through FE-simulation. Further, the residual stress is measured by using the X-ray diffraction(XRD) method, and the result is compared with the result from the FE-simulation. It is found that the residual stress predicted form the FE-simulation is in good agreement with the residual stress measured by using the XRD method.
The formation of , $\beta$-quartz solid solution in the $LiO_2-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$glasses containing $TiO_{2}$ and $ZrO_{2}$ as nucleating agents was investigated for various temperatures and times. Linear thermal expansion coefficients of base glasses and crystallized glasses were $45\sim 55 \times 10^{-7} \textrm{cm}/^{\circ}C$ and $ -8\sim +8 \times 10^{-7}\textrm{cm}/^{\circ}C$ ($25^{\circ}C \sim 525^{\circ}C$), respectively. The crystal phase formed by heat-treatment below $900^{\circ}C$was , $\beta$--quartz solid solution, and the crystal sizes were less than 0.21m. On the other hand, the crystal size of the base glasses containing 3.5 wt% MgO is relatively uniform and is independent with temperature. The specimen containing 3.5 wt% ZnO shows a minimum crystal size(O.l8$\mu \textrm{m}$), and it strongly depends on temperature of heat-treatment.
A transmission electron microscope (TEM) investigation has been performed on the precipitation of $L2_1$-type $Ni_2AlTi$ phase in B2-ordered NiAl system. The hardness after solution treatment is high in NiAl-Ti alloys suggesting the large contribution of solid solution strengthening in this alloy system. However, the amount of age hardening is not large as compared to the large microstructural variations during aging. At the beginning of aging, the $L2_1$-type $Ni_2AlTi$ precipitates keep a lattice coherency with the NiAl matrix. By longer periods of aging $Ni_2AlTi$ precipitates lose their coherency and change their morphology to the globular ones surrounded by misfit dislocations. Misfit dislocations, which are observed on {100} planes of H-precipitates have the Burgers vector of a <100> with a pure edge type. The lattice misfits of NiAl-$Ni_2AlTi$ system is estimated from the spacings of misfit dislocations to be 1.1% at 1273 K. The lattice misfits decrease with increasing aging temperature in this system.
Simulated debris was synthesized using UO2, Zr, and stainless steel and a heat treatment method under inert or oxidizing conditions. The primary U solid phase of the debris synthesized at 1473 K under inert conditions was UO2, whereas a (U, Zr)O2 solid solution formed at 1873 K. Under oxidizing conditions, a mixture of U3O8 and (Fe, Cr)UO4 phases formed at 1473 K, whereas a (U, Zr)O2+x solid solution formed at 1873 K. The leaching behavior of the fission products from the simulated debris was evaluated using two methods: the irradiation method, for which fission products were produced via neutron irradiation, and the doping method, for which trace amounts of non-radioactive elements were doped into the debris. The dissolution behavior of U depended on the properties of the debris and aqueous solution for immersion. Cs, Sr, and Ba leached out regardless of the primary solid phases. The leaching of high-valence Eu and Ru ions was suppressed, possibly owing to their solid-solution reaction with or incorporation into the uranium compounds of the simulated debris.
Improvement of the mechanical properties of a commercial aluminium casting alloy, A356, was achieved through an optimised combination of alloying elements, modification, and heat treatment. 0.7 wt.% Cu and an additional 0.2 wt.% Mg were added to an Al-7Si-0.35Mg alloy for strengthening at both room and elevated temperatures, whilst a subsequent decrease in the ductility was compensated for by the modification of eutectic Si by Sr addition at a level of up to 110 ppm. It was found that the dissolution of Cu-rich or Mg-rich phases could be maximised by solid-solutionising an alloy with 40 ppm Sr at $530^{\circ}C$, increasing the tensile and yield strengths to 350 MPa and 297 MPa, respectively, with a reasonably high strain of 5% after peak-aging at $210^{\circ}C$. Further addition of Sr up to 110 ppm is, however, more likely to interfere with the dissolution of the Cu-rich or Mg-rich phases during solid solution treatment, resulting in a slight decrease in both tensile and yield strengths at room temperature. Besides the Cu addition, such undissolved phases, on the other hand, may contribute to elevated temperature strength at $200^{\circ}C$.
The microstructural evolution during mechanical alloying of Nb and Sn powders, of average composition Nb3Sn, has been investigated by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Observations by SEM showed a progressive change of milling time. From the XRD studies, the structural development with milling time depends on the ball size for a given powder/ball ratio. Using a larger ball of 9.5mm diameter, the elemental powders initially alloy mechanically to form an A15 structure phase, and then amorphised with continued milling. However, in case of milling with a smaller ball of 3.968mm diameter, an amorphous phase is first formed. These results can be understood by considering the dependence of the milling energy on the ball size. The homogeneous stoichiometric $Nb_3Sn$ phase could be easily obtained by heat treatment of a supersaturated solid solution produced by MA. Heat treatment of an amorphous phase formed by MA resulted in the mixture of the $Nb_3Sn$ and $Nb_6Sn_5$ phases.
The effect of a heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Inconel 713C alloy vacuum investment castings were investigated. The microstructure of the as-cast state was observed, showing well-developed dendrite structures and distributed carbide particles and solidified massive precipitates in the grain or grain boundary during solidification, in this case the γ′ phase and MC particles. During a heat treatment, the γ phase matrix was reinforced by solid solution elements, carbide particles from the film morphology precipitated along the grain boundary, and many micro-precipitates of second γ′ phases 0.2 ㎛~2 ㎛ in size were newly formed in the γ phase matrix according to SEM-EDS analysis results. The tensile strength at a high temperature (850℃) decreased slightly becoming comparable with the room-temperature result, while the hardness value of the specimen after the vacuum heat treatment increased by approximately 19%, becoming similar to that of the as-cast condition. However, the impact values at room temperature and low temperature (-196℃) were approximated; this alloy was mostly not affected by an impact at a low temperature. In the observations of the fracture surface morphologies of the specimens after the tensile tests, the fractures at room temperature were a mix of brittle and ductile fractures, and an intergranular fracture in the inter-dendrite structure and some dimples in the matrix were observed, whereas the fractures at high temperatures were ductile fractures, with many dimples arising due to precipitation. It was found that a reinforced matrix and precipitates of carbide and the γ′ phase due to the heat treatment had significant effects, contributing greatly to the excellent mechanical properties.
