Employing high-temperature gas flux in a residual salt separation technique for pyroprocessing

  • Residual salt separation is an essential step in pyroprocessing because its reaction products, as prepared by electrochemical unit processes, contain frozen residual electrolyte species, which are generally composed of alkali-metal chloride salts (e.g., LiCl, KCl). In this study, a simple technique that utilizes high-temperature gas flux as a driving force to melt and push out the residual salt in the reaction products was developed. This technique is simple as it only requires the use of a heating gun in combination with a gas injection system. Consequently, $LiNO_3-ZrO_2$ and $LiCl-ZrO_2$ mixtures were successfully separated by the high-temperature gas injection (separation efficiency > 93%), thereby demonstrating the viability of this simple technique for residual salt separation.

  • Cyclone is one of the most widely used gas - solid separation devices in industries. In spite of its many advantages, lower separation efficiency and flat separation curve are usually associated with cyclones. Therefore, the primary goal of cyclone research is to improve its separation capability while retaining its basic features. In this study, granules were filled in the cone of a cyclone in an attempt to increase the cyclone separation efficiency through the combination of granular filtration and centrifugal separation. 폴리아마이드 복합막을 이용한 일산화탄소 및 수소 혼합가스의 분리특성에 대한 온도의 영향 (Influence of Temperature on Separation of CO and H2 Mixed Gas Using Polyamide Composite Membrane)

  • 오늘날 경제 성장에 따른 도시고형폐기물(Municipal Solid Waste, MSW)의 발생량 증가로 MSW의 환경적인 처리 및 에너지 회수측면에서 폐기물 가스화에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 폐기물 가스화 공정을 통하여 생산된 합성가스의 활용연구를 위하여 폴리아마이드 복합막을 이용한 일산화탄소 및 수소 혼합가스의 분리특성 연구를 수행하였다. 폐기물 합성가스의 분리특성 실험을 위하여 순수 일산화탄소와 수소를 혼합한 모사가스를 활용하였으며, 주입 기체의 유량과 스테이지 컷(stage cut)의 변화에 따른 분리특성에 있어서 온도의 영향을 고찰하였다. 각 실험조건에서 일산화탄소와 수소의 투과도를 평가하였으며, 이때 퍼미에이트(permeate)에서의 수소에 대한 선택도를 평가하였다. 또한 본 연구에서 일산화탄소와 수소의 기체 분리막에 대한 투과 활성화 에너지를 얻기 위하여 Arrhenius 도시를 이용한 분석연구를 함께 수행하였다.

  • 포말 분리법에 의한 양어장 순환수 중의 고형물 제거 특성을 조사하였다. 장치의 효율에 영향을 미치는 주요인자들은 공탑 공기유속, 체류시간, 그리고 포말층의 높이였다. 측정된 양어장수 시료 내에는 총 단백질량의 약 $50\%$정도가 계면 활성 성분이었다. 공탑 공기유속, 체류시간이 증가함에 따라 단백질, T-N. TA 및 고형물 성분들의 제거율은 증가하였으며, TVS의 제저율은 공탑 공기유속 및 체류시간 (HRT)이 증가함에 따라 증가하였으나 포말층 높이가 높아짐에 따라서는 감소하였다. 포말분리장치는 양어장 순환수 중에서 발생되는 어류 성장에 유해한 성분, 특히 TA 및 TVS의 제거에 우수한 성능을 보임을 알 수 있었다.

Ionic liquid coated magnetic core/shell CoFe2O4@SiO2 nanoparticles for the separation/analysis of trace gold in water sample

  • A new ionic liquid functionalized magnetic silica nanoparticle was synthesized and characterized and tested as an adsorbent. The adsorbent was used for magnetic solid phase extraction on ICP-MS method. Simultaneous determination of precious metal Au has been addressed. The method is simple and fast and has been applied to standard water and surface water analysis. A new method for separation/analysis of trace precious metal Au by Magnetron Solid Phase Extraction (MSPE) combined with ICP-MS. The element to be tested is rapidly adsorbed on CoFe2O4@SiO2@[BMIM]PF6 composite nano-adsorbent and eluted with thiourea. The method has a preconcentration factor of 9.5-fold. This method has been successfully applied to the determination of gold in actual water samples. Hydrophobic Ionic Liquids (ILs) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM]PF6) coated CoFe2O4@SiO2 nanoparticles with core-shell structure to prepare magnetic solid phase extraction agent (CoFe2O4@SiO2@ILs) and establish a new method of MSPE coupled with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for separation/analysis of trace gold. The results showed that trace gold was adsorbed rapidly by CoFe2O4@SiO2@[BMIM]PF6 and eluanted by thiourea. Under the optimal conditions, preconcentration factor of the proposed method was 9.5-fold. The linear range, detection limit, correlation coefficient (R) and relative standard deviation (RSD) were found to be 0.01~1000.00 ng·mL-1, 0.001 ng·mL-1, 0.9990 and 3.4% (n = 11, c = 4.5 ng·mL-1). The CoFe2O4@SiO2 nanoparticles could be used repeatedly for 8 times. This proposed method has been successfully applied to the determination of trace gold in water samples.

  • The main advantage of dissolved air flotation (DAF) in water treatment process is the small dimension compared with conventional gravity sedimentation and it can be basically reduced by the separation zone performed with the short solid-liquid separation time. Fine bubbles make such a short time possible to carry out solid from liquid separation as a collector on the course of water treatment. Therefore, the dimension of separation zone in DAF process is practically determined by the rise velocity of the bubble-floc agglomerates, which is a floc attached with several bubbles. To improve flotation velocity and particle removal efficiency in DAF process, many researchers have tried to attach bubbles as much as possible to flocs. Therefore, the maximum number of attached bubble on a floc and the rise velocity of bubble-floc agglomerates considered as the most important factor to design the separation zone of flotation tank in DAF process was simulated based on the population balance theory. According to the simulation results of this study, the size and volume concentration of bubble influenced on the possible number of attached bubble on a floc. The agglomerates attached with smaller bubble was more sensitive to hydraulic loading rate in the separation zone of DAF process. For the design of a high rate DAF process applied over surface loading 40 m/hr. it is required a precise further study on the variation of bubble property and behavior including in terms of bubble size distribution.

남극 크릴새우의 고액분리 기술개발 (Development of Solid/Liquid Separation Technique for Krill (Eupausia superba))

  • 크릴새우의 고액분리효율을 규명하기 위하여 크릴새우를 해빙시킨 다음 고액분리기만 사용하였을 경우, 솔 (Brush) 분쇄기 또는 날 분쇄기로 크릴새우를 분쇄한 후 고액분리기를 사용하여 효율을 측정하였을 경우로 나누어 수행하였다. 고액분리기만으로 분리한 경우와 솔분쇄기와 날분쇄기로 분쇄한 후 고액 분리기를 적용한 결과 3차 시험에서 분리효율은 각각 46.2%, 60.2%, 60.4%를 나타내었다. 고액분리기만을 사용하였을 경우보다 날 분쇄기와의 조합에서 분리효율의 증가는 2차 시험에서 10.1%, 3차 시험에서 14.2%로 각각 나타났고, 처리용량은 4.2kg/min으로 되었다. 고액분리 전에 날분쇄기로 분쇄한 후 고액분리기로 분리하는 것이 이상적이라 판단된다.

열유도 상분리에 의한 선형 저밀도 폴리에틸렌 입자 제조에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Preparation of a Linear Low Density Polyethylene particles by Thermally Induced Phase Separation)

  • We are crystallized to the linear low density polyethylene(LLDPE) particles by a thermally induced phase separation(TIPS). TIPS process based on the phase separation mechanism was performed for the LLDPE system which undergoes liquid-solid phase separation. The linear low density polyethylene particle formation occurred by the nucleation and growth mechanism in the metastable region. Although the growth rates depended on the experimental conditions such as the polymer concentration and temperature, the particles were larger when the polymer concentration was higher or temperature was higher. The particles were observed by SEM. The LLDPE particle size distribution became broader when the polymer concentration was higher.

  • The performance of inorganic sludge separation system is evaluated. Anaerobic digester effluent sludge is used for feed sludge of this system and hydrocyclone is used for inorganic sludge separation. For phosphorus removal and recovery $MgCl_2$ is pumped into MAP growth tank, a component of inorganic sludge separation system. Using this system inorganic sludge which contained less than 40 % of organic matter can be discharged stably and the maximum amount of separated inorganic sludge is 13.4 % of influent sludge based on dry solid. The amount of phosphorus recovered as MAP(as P) is 16.7 % to influent T-P.

Separation of $\Phi$X HAE III DNA with Electrochromatography

  • Experimental and theoretical works were performed for the separation of large polyelectrolytes such as DNA in the column packed with gel particles under an electric field. This paper shows how intraparticle convection effects the separation of DNAs in the column because DNAs quickly oriented through the pores in the field direction. Dimensionless transient mass balance equations were derived considering diffusion and electrophoretic convection. The separation criteria is theoretically studied using two different Peclet numbers in the fluid and solid phases and these criteria were verified uing two different DNAs by electrophoretic mobilities measured experimentally, showing how the separation position of DNAs varies in the column according to values of Pe(sub)f/Pe(sub)g of individual DNA. Governing equations are simultaneously solved by operator theoretic and characteristic methods to yield the column response.
