  • Performance of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) can be enhanced by converting thermal energy of its high temperature exhaust gas to mechanical power using a micro gas turbine (MGT). A MGT plays also an important role to pressurize and warm up inlet gas streams of the SOFC. In this study, the influence of performance characteristics of the tubular SOFC on the hybrid power system is discussed. For this purpose, detailed heat and mass transfer with reforming and electrochemical reactions in the SOFC are mathematically modeled, and their results are reflected to the performance analysis. The analysis target is 220kWe SOFC/MGT hybrid system based on the tubular SOFC developed by Siemens-Westinghouse. Special attention is paid to the ohmic losses in the tubular SOFC counting not only current flow in radial direction, but also current flow in circumferential direction through the anode and cathode.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model to study the performance of anode-supported flat-tube solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) far the cross section of the cell in the flow direction of the fuel and air flows is developed. In this model a mass and charge balance, Maxwell-Stefan equation as well as the momentum equation by using, Darcy's law are applied in differential form. The finite element method using FEMLAB commercial software is used for meshing, discritization and solving the system of coupled differential equations. The current density distribution and fuel consumption as well as water production are analyzed. Experimental data is used to verify a predicted voltage-current density and power density versus current density to judge on the model accuracy.

  • In present work, optimized the manufacturing process of anode-supported tubular SOFCs cell and stack were studied. For this purpose, we first developed a high performance tubular SOFC cell, and then made electrical connection in series to get high voltage. The gas sealing was established by attaching single cells to alumina jig with ceramic bond. Through these process, we can obtain such high OVP as around 15V, which means that the electrical connection and gas sealing were optimized. Finally we developed a new tubular SOFC stack which shows a maximum power of 65W @ $800^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, a 1kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell(SOFC) test system was developed. A SOFC is the most promising power system to provide the higher efficient(over 50%) for house application area(1~10kW). To develop the optimized test system, the temperature control module that controls the preprocess and reaction condition, the flow control module that controls of the mass of reactants, and the electric loader that tests the discharge performance condition, etc. The temperature control module was designed to provide the high control resolution(under $1^{\circ}C$ at $750^{\circ}C$ of operating temperature) using K-type thermal couple. The flow control module was designed control blower and heater precisely using the phase control method. And the electric loader is designed that provide CV, CC, CR discharge mode and minimized the operating error adopting the independent DC-DC converter on analog input and output module. The performance of the developed SOFC test system showed that the accuracy of stack voltage was 0.15% at 80V and stack current was 0.1% at 100A.

  • This study aims to analyse the influence of steam injection on the performance of hybrid systems combining a solid oxide fuel cell and a gas turbine. The steam is generated by recovering heat from the exhaust gas. Two system configurations, with difference being the operating pressure of the SOFC, are examined and effects of steam injection on performances of the two systems are compared. Two representative gas turbine pressure ratios are simulated and a wide range of both the fuel cell temperature and the turbine inlet temperature is examined. Without steam injection, the pressurized system generally exhibits better system efficiency than the ambient pressure system. Steam injection increases system power capacity for all design cases. However, its effect on system efficiency varies much depending on design conditions. The pressurized system hardly takes advantage of the steam injection in terms of the system efficiency. On the other hand, steam injection contributes to the efficiency improvement of the ambient pressure system in some design conditions. A higher pressure ratio provides a better chance of efficiency increase due to steam injection.

  • Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) is the high efficiency fuel cell operating at high temperatures ranging from 700-1000℃. Design of the flow paths of the fuel and air in SOFCs is important to improve cell performance and prevent cell degradation. However, the uneven distribution of current density in the traditional type having one inlet and outlet causes cell degradation. In this regard, the parallel flow path with two inlet and outlets was designed and compared to the traditional type based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. To check the cell performance, hydrogen distribution, velocity distribution and current density distribution were monitored. The results validated that the parallel designs with two inlets and outlets have a higher cell performance compared to the traditional design with one inlet and outlet due to a larger reaction area. In case of uniform-type paths, more uniform current density distribution was observed with less cross-sectional variation in flow paths. In case of contracted and expanded inflow paths, significant improvement of performance and uniform current density was not observed compared to uniform parallel path. Considering SOFC cell with uniform current density can prevent cell degradation, more suitable design of SOFC cell with less cross-sectional variation in the flow path should be developed. This work can be helpful to understand the role of flow distribution in the SOFC performance.

  • In this study, a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system model including balance of plant (BOP) for building electric power generation is developed to study the effect of operating conditions on the system efficiency and power output. SOFC system modeled in this study consists of three heat-exchangers, an external reformer, burner, and two blowers. A detailed computational cell model including internal reforming reaction is developed for a planer SOFC stack which is operated at intermediate temperature (IT). The BOP models including an external reformer, heat-exchangers, a burner, blowers, pipes are developed to predict the gas temperature, pressure drops and flow rate at every component in the system. The SOFC stack model and BOP models are integrate to estimate the effect of operating parameters on the performance of the system. In this study, the design of experiment (DOE) is used to compare the effects of fuel flow rate, air flow rate, air temperature, current density, and recycle ratio of anode off gas on the system efficiency and power output.
