  • Submicron thick solid electrolyte membrane is essential to the implementation of low temperature solid oxide fuel cell, and, therefore, development of new electrode structures is necessary for the submicron thick solid electrolyte deposition while providing functions as current collector and fuel transport channel. In this research, a nickel membrane with multi-stage nano hole array has been produced via modified two step replication process. The obtained membrane has practical size of 12mm diameter and $50{\mu}m$ thickness. The multi-stage nature provides 20nm pores on one side and 200nm on the other side. The 20nm side provides catalyst layer and $30\~40\%$ planar porosity was measured. The successful deposition of submicron thick yttria stabilized zirconia membrane on the substrate shows the possibility of achieving a low temperature solid oxide fuel cell.

  • SiC nanotubes were synthesized by SLS growth mechanism using various metal catalysts. Synthesized nanotubes had mean diameters of 20~50 nm and several $\mu\textrm{m}$ length. The kind of catalysts affected microstructures of SiC nanotubes by different diffusion routes. These differences are attributed to catalysts' physical properties and relative activities to the graphite substrate. Fe acted as a good catalyst of SLS growth mechanism. But in case of Ni, SiC nanotubes grew slowly. Optical property was measured by photoluminescence measurement. Relatively broad peak was obtained and mean peak positioned at about 430 nm. This result was the same as other nanocrystalline SiC materials, but was different from the results of bulk SiC probably due to quantum confinement effect and defect in the grown SiC nanotube.

  • An experimental study on the catalytic reformer adopted in the auxiliary power unit system of solid oxide fuel cell was conducted. A 3-fluid nozzle, by which liquid fuel such as diesel, water and air are sprayed and uniformed mixed, was designed and used in this study. An electrically heated monolith inserted in the reformer was used for the vaporization of fuel and water in the transient state of reformer. The reformer uses the partial oxidizing reaction at the catalyst and the supply of water prevents the flame combustion in the spraying zone and lessens the deactivation of catalyst. The result showed that the reforming of liquid fuel can be started by the electrically heated monolith and the 3-fluid nozzle can give the uniform mixing of fuel, water and air. It was also found that the reformer fueled by n-hexadecane can make the reformate, at best, containing $H_2$ at 15.5% and CO at 11.5% that are used as fuel in the solid oxide fuel cell.

  • As a result of increasing environmental concerns related to air quality and maintenance of automobiles, the alkylation of isobutane with olefins has become an even more important process for production of high quality gasoline. However, the widespread use of the alkylation process is limited by the polluting and corrosive liquid acid catalysts (HF and $H_2SO_4$) currently used in industry. For the reason, a large number of solid catalysts, especially zeolites, have been studied as an environmental friendly catalyst in this process. Recently, mesoporous solid acids and ionic liquids have been investigated as a green catalyst. In this review, the research of environmental friendly catalysts for an isobutane alkylation is summarized.

  • This study is to increase the surface area and maximize the effect of the catalyst by coating a nanometersized metal catalyst material on the anode layer using atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology. ALD process is known to produce uniform films with well-controlled thickness at the atomic level on substrates. We measured the performance by coating metals (Ni) on Ni/YSZ, which is the most widely known anode material for solid oxide fuel cells. ALD coatings began to show a decrease in cell performance over 3 nm coatings.

  • Novel carbon-based solid acid catalysts were synthesized through a sustainable route from lipid-extracted microalgal residue of Dunaliella tertiolecta, for biodiesel production. Two carbon-based solid acid catalysts were prepared by surface modification of bio-char with sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$) and sulfuryl chloride ($SO_2Cl_2$), respectively. The treated catalysts were characterized and their catalytic activities were evaluated by esterification of oleic acid. The esterification catalytic activity of the $SO_2Cl_2$-treated bio-char was higher ($11.5mmol\;Prod.{\cdot}h^{-1}{\cdot}gCat.\;^{-1}$) than that of commercial catalyst silica-supported Nafion SAC-13 ($2.3mmol\;Prod.{\cdot}h^{-1}{\cdot}gCat.^{-1}$) and $H_2SO_4$-treated bio-char ($5.7mmol\;Prod.{\cdot}h^{-1}{\cdot}gCat.^{-1}$). Reusability of the catalysts was examined. The catalytic activity of the $SO_2Cl_2$-modified catalyst was sustained from the second run after the initial activity dropped after the first run and kept the same activity until the fifth run. It was higher than that of first-used Nafion. These experimental results demonstrate that catalysts from lipid-extracted algae have great potential for the economic and environment-friendly production of biodiesel.

  • In this study, TAPEH (t-amyl peroxy 2-ethyl hexanoate) was selected for the reaction initiator which is a core factor for developing acrylic polyol binder. Tone M100 (caprolactone acrylate), 4HBA (4-hydroxy butyl acrylate), and 2HEMA (2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate) were used for hydroxy-monomers. To check the applicability of raw materials mentioned above into the binders of 2 components acrylic polyurethane paint and reduce the VOC, the reactivity and film performance by different kinds of aliphatic polyisocyanate hardeners which are already generalized were reviewed. As the Tin-based catalyst has been regulated, the comparison test of reactivity and performance between the conventional catalyst and non-toxic metal catalyst recommended as the alternative was conducted as well. As a result, we were able to obtain the basic data which are necessary for applying 2 components high solid polyurethane paint and also reached a conclusion that it can be applied for developing new paints in terms of high performance, workability and environmental care.

  • This review explores the potential of pillared bentonite materials as solid acid catalysts for synthesizing diethyl ether, a promising renewable energy source. Diethyl ether offers numerous environmental benefits over fossil fuels, such as lower emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon oxides (COx) gases and enhanced fuel properties, like high volatility and low flash point. Generally, the synthesis of diethyl ether employs homogeneous acid catalysts, which pose environmental impacts and operational challenges. This review discusses bentonite, a naturally occurring alumina silicate, as a heterogeneous acid catalyst due to its significant cation exchange capacity, porosity, and ability to undergo modifications such as pillarization. Pillarization involves intercalating polyhydroxy cations into the bentonite structure, enhancing surface area, acidity, and thermal stability. Despite the potential advantages, challenges remain in optimizing the yield and selectivity of diethyl ether production using pillared bentonite. The review highlights the need for further research using various metal oxides in the pillarization process to enhance surface properties and acidity characteristics, thereby improving the catalytic performance of bentonite for the synthesis of diethyl ether. This development could lead to more efficient, environmentally friendly synthesis processes, aligning with sustainable energy goals.

  • Zinc ion could be recovered from metal plating wastewater with the spent iron oxide catalyst which was used in the plant of Styrene Monomer(SM) production. The zinc was recovered more than 98.7% at higher than pH 2.0. The saturation magnetization of the spent catalyst is enough high as 59.4 emu/g to apply in the solid-liquid separation after treating the wastewater. The mechanism of zinc recovery with the iron oxide catalyst could be a electro-chemical adsorption at pH 3.0~8.5, and a precipitation as $Zn(OH)_2$ at higher than pH 8.5.
