In the present investigation, experiments and numerical analysis during melting process of a phase change material were performed to research heat transfer phenomena generated by means of conduction and natural convection in the vertical tube at inward melting. The phase change material used in the experiments is 99 percent pure n-Docosane paraffin($C_{22}H_{46}$). In the results, it is found that the velocity of phase change interface at the top of tube is faster than at the bottom of tube because of the effect of natural convection, and the distribution of velocity at the liquid region is little affected by the initial temperature of phase change material. The velocity of phase change interface is slower as the initial temperature of phase change material is lower, and the effect of natural convection is larger as the aspect ratio of tube is larger. In tendency of heat transfer phenomena, the experimental results were well corresponded with numerical results. But there were a little disagrements between the results of experiment and numerical analysis because of the assumption of the constant volumetric expansion coefficient in numerical analysis.

Heat transfer coefficients on a single spiral coil tube in the furan foundry sand fluidized bed have been investigated. Heat transfer coefficients(ho) to an immersed single spiral coil tube were measured in the bed. The bed diameter was 0.21 m. The following quantities were varied: (l)bed temperature, (2)mean particle diameter, (3) fluidization rate, (4)the ratio of heated coil tube pitch to diameter(p/Do), and (5)the ratio of heated coil tube pitch to mean particle diameter(p/dp). In addition, the experimental values of maximum Nusselts number were compared with the values of maximum Nusselts number predicted by the existing correlations. The values of heat transfer coefficient increase with the increase in bed temperature and fluidization rate, but decrease with increase in particle diameter. An empirical formulus of maximum Nusselts number which is applicable in the furan foundry sand fluidization bed is as follows: $$Nu_{max}=1.01\;Re^{0.48}Prg^{0.4}(p/dp)^{0.28}(p/Do)^{0.05}$$.
For the main variables to be selected by the designer for the heating and cooling load calculation in greenhouses, in order to evaluate the effect of these design values on the heating and cooling load, the simulations were carried out by varying the respective design values. Based on these results, we proposed the design values which should pay special attention to selection. The design values which have the greatest effect on the heating load were the overall heat transfer coefficient of the covering material and the design outdoor temperature was next. The effect of the design values according to the number of spans showed little difference. In the case of the single-span greenhouse, the effect of the design values related to the underground heat transfer can not be ignored. However, in the case of the multi-span greenhouse, the effect of the design values related to the underground heat transfer and the infiltration rate were insignificant. The design values which have the greatest effect on the cooling load were the solar radiation into the greenhouse and the evapotranspiration coefficient, followed by the indoor and outdoor temperature difference and the ventilation rate. The effect of the design values showed a great difference between the single-span greenhouse and the multi-span greenhouse, but there was almost no difference according to the number of spans. The effect of the overall heat transfer coefficient of the covering material was negligible in both the single-span greenhouse and the multi-span greenhouse. However, the effect of the indoor and outdoor temperature difference and the ventilation rate on the cooling load was not negligible. Especially, it is considered that the effect is larger in multi-span greenhouse.
The thermal performance of a heating board with microencapsualted PCM was investigated and compared to conventional heating board. The employed PCM was the myristic acid $$ and was encapsulated by the multiple layers of PMMA and paraffin wax. The size of encapsulated PCM was $1{\sim}1.5mm$. Accoring to ANSI/ASHRAE test procedure, the close-loop test configuration was installed. Air was used as the heat transfer fluid and a calibrated orifice was employed for the measurement of air flow rates. The thermal performance test of two different heating boards(with 10 wt% PCM and without PCM) was conducted for different air flow rates and the heat transfer characteristics during cooling was compared. The test results showed that the surface temperature of heating board with 10 wt% PCM maintained higher during the cooling process than that of the heating board without PCM and experimentally determined heat transfer coefficient in heating board with PCM showed higher value compared to heating board without PCM.
Convective heat transfer is the main component of greenhouse energy loss because the energy loss by this mechanism is greater than those of the other two components (radiative and conductive). Previous studies have examined the convective heat transfer coefficients under natural conditions, but they are not applicable to symmetric thermal screens with zero porosity, and such screens are largely produced and used in Korea. However, the properties of these materials have not been reported in the literature, which causes selectivity issues for users. Therefore, in this study, three screens having similar color and zero porosity were selected, and a mathematical procedure based on radiation balance equations was developed to determine their convective heat transfer coefficients. To conduct the experiment, a hollow wooden structure was built and the thermal screen was tacked over this frame; the theoretical model was applied underneath and over the screen. Input parameters included three components: 1) solar and thermal fluxes; 2) temperature of the screen, black cloth, and ambient air; and 3) wind velocity. The convective heat transfer coefficients were determined as functions of the air-screen temperature difference under open-air environmental conditions. It was observed from the outcomes that the heat transfer coefficients decreased with the increase of the air-screen temperature difference provided that the wind velocity was nearly zero.
Ventilation rates, inside and outside weather data were measured in a arch-shape single-span plastic greenhouse growing tomatoes. On the roof of the experimental greenhouse, round windows which have a diameter of 0.6 m were installed at intervals of 8m. It showed that the number of air changes in this greenhouse were average 0.17 volumes per minute and in the range of 0.02 to 0.32 volumes per minute. These air changes are insufficient to meet the recommended ventilation rate for commercial greenhouses, and it is estimated that interval of 6 m is appropriate for spring or fall season. For summer season, it is necessary to narrow the space or to enlarge the open area of roof windows. Using the heat balance model, the evapotranspiration coefficients of greenhouse tomatoes were estimated from experimental ventilation data, overall heat transfer and solar radiation. It showed that the evapotranspiration coefficients were average 0.62 and in the 0.39 to 0.85 range. We suggest applying 0.6 as the evapotranspiration coefficient in design of ventilation for the single-span tomato greenhouses.
The generation of electric power and plant facilities have been attempting to improve energy efficiency with many efforts as those being basis of our country's economy. In particular, the CHP(Combined Heat Power plant) system, is producing the electricity and process steam, has generally been using for the cogeneration plants. When CHP system operates, the steam has to maintain the high temperature and high pressure in order to have high efficiency of electric power production as much as possible. In addition, the exhausted steam from the turbine has to reform proper temperature to use the needed process. The major purpose of desuperheater is that the superheated steam changes into the saturated steam because it is more efficient and suitable for using the process, furthermore, it is more convenient and stable regarding the process temperature control. The design of the desuperheater obtained through the experiment and preceding analysis. This paper is verified by analysis that water spray nozzle(${\Phi}$=28mm) shows the best ability under the real power plant condition.

For large scaled solar cells and photosensors CdS thin films of $2{\mu}m$ thickness have deposited on ITO glass substrate by chemical bath deposition methode in $300^{\circ}C$ electric furnace. The surface roughness and resistance of cadmium sulphide(CdS) thin films with different microstructures and morphologies was investigated by using a x-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an atomic force microscope (AFM), and a near-field scanning microwave microscope (NFMM). As the different substrate heat temperatures, the microwave reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ and intensity of the (002) diffraction peak was changed, and the surface morphology also has shown differently.
A numerical study was performed on the transient fuel temperatures of a military aircraft stationed under non-operating static condition. Numerical calculation was peformed by an explicit method using modified Dufort-Frankel scheme. It was assumed that the non-operating aircraft is subjected to repeated daily cycles of air temperature with the solar radiation and wind speed corresponding to the 1 % hot day ambient condition. And, the aircraft was assumed to be in turbulent flow. The convective heat transfer coefficient for turbulent flow on the flat plate suggested by Eckert was employed to calculate heat transfer between the aircraft surface and the ambience. The energy conservation equation on fuel was used as governing equation for this analysis. As a result of this analysis, the wing tank temperature showed the highest temperature and the largest rate of temperature changes among fuel tanks. The results of this analysis could be used as initial foe] temperatures for analysis of the transient fuel temperatures in various flight missions. Also, this analysis method could be used to analysis and design of an aircraft thermal energy management system.
A need for building energy efficiency is on the issue since energy demand in the building stock in Korea represents about 24% of the final energy consumption. As a way of improving the thermal performance of buildings for reducing maintenance costs and environmental conservation, a lot of effort is shown to improve the building energy efficiency by applying improvement of envelope insulation performance for buildings whose energy efficiency is low relatively through the remodeling. The windows of building envelopes are areas that lead to the biggest heat loss in the building. So windows are considered to be the primary target of energy efficiency in remodeling and various studies for windows have been done. Currently, however, only U-factor and airtightness of windows performance are regulated. Window wall ratio(WWR) and solar heat gain coefficient(SHGC) of windows are not considered when conducting the remodeling. In this study appropriate performance of windows(U-factor and SHGC) for existing residential is proposed according to the window wall ratio by using EnergyPlus. As the results of this study, the U-factor of windows representing the maximum energy savings is $1.0W/m^2K$ but in case of SHGC, the values that indicate the maximum energy savings are different depending on the window wall ratio. Therefore, when conducting the remodeling of windows, to determine energy efficiency by considering only the U-factor is inadequate so it is necessary that appropriate windows are applied to buildings by considering window wall ratio and windows properties(U-factor and SHGC).
