  • Thin transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) having a thickness lower than 30 nm have been widely usedin touch screen panels. However the resistivity of the TCO films significantly increases as the thickness decreases, due to the poor crystallinity at very thin thickness of TCO films. In this study, we have investigated the effect of electron beam irradiation during the sputtering on the electrical properties and transmittance of 30 nm-thick ITO films, which have a different SnO2 atomic percent, prepared by magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Fig. 1 shows the variation of resistivity of ITO films with a different SnO2 atomic percent for both the normal ITO films and electron beam irradiated ITO films. As shows in Fig. 1, the electron beam irradiation to the ITO (SnO2 weight percent 10%) films during the sputtering resulted in a significantly decreased in resistivity from $7.4{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}-cm$ to $1.5{\times}10^{-4}{\Omega}-cm$ and it also increased in transmittance from 84% to 88% at a wavelength of 550 nm. These results can be attributed to energy transfer from electron to ad-atoms of ITO films during the electron beam irradiated sputtering, which can enhance the crystallinity of 30 nm-thick ITO films. It is strongly indicate that electron beam irradiation can greatly improve the electrical properties and transmittance of very thin ITO films for touch screen panels, flexible displays and solar cells.

  • Daylight is very useful to control the indoor environment, and can save energy in buildings. So it is necessary to evaluate the daylighting performance of buildings. We proposed a simplified equation that can be used in the early stages of design. And we verified the equation by using the measured illuminance data from the 1/5 scale model. We compared the calculated indoor illuminances and measured illuminance including Daylight Factors of scale model in order to verify the applicability of the simplified equation, and proved the analyzed values are acceptable. When we have a target value of the Daylight Factor, we just have to determine the window area, transmittance of the glazing system, and indoor surface reflectance, then can achieve it with this simplified equation.

  • Concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) system consists of high-quality complex optical elements, mechanical devices, and electronics components and can have the advantages of high integration and high-efficiency energy sources. III-V compound semiconductor cells have proven performance based on high reliability in the aerospace field, but have characteristics that require absolute support of the balance of systems (BOS) such as solar position trackers, receivers with heat sinks, and housing instruments. To determine the optimum parameters of secondary optical elements (SOEs) design for CPV systems, we designed three types of CPV modules, classified as non-SOEs type, reflective mirror type, and CPC lens type. We measured the I-V and P-V characteristics of the prototype CPV modules with the angle of inclination varying from 0° to 12° and with a 500-magnification Fresnel lens. The experimental results assumed misalignment of the solar position tracker or module design of pinpoint accuracy. As a result, at the 0° tilt angle, the CPC lens produced lower power due to the quartz transmittance ratio compared to that by other SOEs. However, for tilt angles greater than 3°, the CPC lens type module achieved high efficiency and stability. This study is expected to help design high-performance CPV systems.

  • We studied the effect of the silver grid size on graphene transparent conducting films for flexible organic solar cells (OSCs). The silver grid was used an assistant layer of the graphene to reduce the sheet resistance of substrates. Silver grid with various graphene sizes for optimizing transmittance and sheet resistance of substrates were fabricated on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates to form the hybrid films. The optimized grid geometry on the single layer graphene (SLG) was the grid dimension $200{\mu}m{\times}200{\mu}m{\times}50nm{\times}2{\mu}m$ (length ${\times}$ width ${\times}$ height ${\times}$ linewidth), where the sheet resistance was $55.73{\Omega}/square$ with the average transmittance of ~ 92.83 % at 550 nm. The properties of the OSCs fabricated using SLG with optimized silver grids on PET substrates show a short circuit current of $10.9mA/cm^2$, an open circuit voltage of 0.58 V, a fill factor of 60.8 %, and a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.9 %. The PCE was improved about 91% than that of the OSCs using the SLG without the silver grid. These results demonstrate that the optimized grid geometry to the based on the graphene transparent electrodes contribute to improving the performance of OSCs.

  • In2O3: Sn(ITO) transparent conducting films were fabricated by the electron beam evaporation method. The dependence of their electrical and optical properties on deposition conditions were examined. The optimum evaporation conditions were such that the deposition rate was 5-10\ulcornersec, oxygen partial pressure was 4x10**_4 torr, substate temperatudre was above 300\ulcorner, and SnO2 doping rate was 10 mol%. The values of sheet resistance and transmittance of the films in visible region fabricated under these optimum conditins were 12\ulcorner/ and 87-99%, respecively. And the energy conversion efficiency of the SIS solar cell fabricated using ITO was 9.16%. It is shown that the transparent conducting films can be applied to the TV camear pick-up tube and solar cell.

  • The front transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films must exhibit good transparency, low resistivity and excellent light scattering properties for high efficiency amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film solar cells. The light trapping phenomenon is limited due to non-uniform and low aspect ratio of the textured glass [1]. We present the low cost electrochemically deposited uniform zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods with various aspect ratios for a-Si thin film solar cells. Since the major drawback of the electrochemically deposited ZnO nanorods was the high sheet resistance and low transmittance that was overcome by depositing the RF magnetron sputtered AZO films as a seed layer with various thicknesses [2]. The length and diameters of the ZnO nanorods was controlled by varying the deposition conditions. The length of ZnO nanorods were varied from 400 nm to $2{\mu}m$ while diameter was kept higher than 200 nm to obtain different aspect ratios. The uniform ZnO nanorods showed higher haze ratio as compared to the commercially available FTO films. We also observed that the scattering in the longer wavelength region was favored for the high aspect ratio of ZnO nanorods and much higher aspect ratios degraded the light scattering phenomenon. Therefore, we proposed our low cost and uniform ZnO nanorods for the high efficiency of thin film solar cells.

  • Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon (a-Si:H) is used as an emitter layer in HIT (heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin layer) solar cells. Its low band gap and low optical properties (low transmittance and high absorption) cause parasitic absorption on the front side of a solar cell that significantly reduces the solar cell blue response. To overcome this, research on CSC (carrier Selective Contacts) is being actively carried out to reduce carrier recombination and improve carrier transportation as a means to approach the theoretical efficiency of silicon solar cells. Among CSC materials, molybdenum oxide ($MoO_x$) is most commonly used for the hole transport layer (HTL) of a solar cell due to its high work function and wide band gap. This paper analyzes the electrical and optical properties of $MoO_x$ thin films for use in the HTL of HIT solar cells. The optical properties of $MoO_x$ show better performance than a-Si:H and ${\mu}c-SiO_x:H$.

  • Recently, thin-film solar cells of Cu(In,Ga)$Se_2$(CIGS) have reached a high level of performance, which has resulted in a 19.9%-efficient device. These conventional devices were typically fabricated using chemical bath deposited CdS buffer layer between the CIGS absorber layer and ZnO window layer. However, the short wavelength response of CIGS solar cell is limited by narrow CdS band gap of about 2.42 eV. Taking into consideration the environmental aspect, the toxic Cd element should be replaced by a different material. It is why during last decades many efforts have been provided to achieve high efficiency Cd-free CIGS solar cells. In order to alternate CdS buffer layer, ZnS buffer layer is grown by using chemical bath deposition(CBD) technique. The thickness and chemical composition of ZnS buffer layer can be conveniently by varying the CBD processing parameters. The processing parameters were optimized to match band gap of ZnS films to the solar spectrum and exclude the creation of morphology defects. Optimized ZnS buffer layer showed higher optical transmittance than conventional thick-CdS buffer layer at the short wavelength below ~520 nm. Then, chemically deposited ZnS buffer layer was applied to CIGS solar cell as a alternative for the standard CdS/CIGS device configuration. This CIGS solar cells were characterized by current-voltage and quantum efficiency measurement.

  • Due to the rapidly diminishing energy sources and higher energy production cost, the interest in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been increasing dramatically in recent years. A typical DSSC is constructed of wide band gap semiconductor electrode such as $TiO_2$ or ZnO that are anchored by light-harvesting sensitizer dyes and surrounded by a liquid electrolyte with a iodide ion/triiodide ion redox couple. DSSCs based on one-dimensional nano-structures, such as ZnO nanorods, have been recently attracting increasing attention due to their excellent electrical conductivity, high optical transmittance, diverse and abundant configurations, direct band gap, absence of toxicity, large exiton binding energy, etc. However, solar-to-electrical conversion performances of DSSCs composed of ZnO n-type photo electrode compared with that of $TiO_2$ are not satisfactory. An important reason for the low photovoltaic performance is the dissolution of $Zn^{2+}$ by the adsorption of acidic dye followed by the formation of agglomerates with dye molecules which could block the I-diffusion pathway into the dye molecule on the ZnO surface. In this paper, we prepared the DSSC with the ZnO electrode using the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method under low temperature condition (< $100^{\circ}C$). It was demonstrated that the ZnO seed layers played an important role on the formation of the ZnO nanostructures using CBD. To achieve truly low-temperature growth of the ZnO nanostructures on the substrates, a two-step method was developed and optimized in the present work. Firstly, ZnO seed layer was prepared on the FTO substrate through the spin-coating method. Secondly, the deposited ZnO seed substrate was immersed into an aqueous solution of 0.25M zinc nitrate hexahydrate and 0.25M hexamethylenetetramine at $90^{\circ}C$ for hydrothermal reaction several times.

  • Global efforts have made to reduce energy consumption and $CO_2$ gas emission. One of the weakest parts for energy loss through the whole building components is building envelopes. Lots of technologies to increase the thermal performance of building envelopes have been introduced in recent year. Transparent Insulation Wall(TIW) is a new technology for building insulation and has been function both solar transmittance and thermal insulation. A mathematical model of a Transparent Insulation Wall equipped with south wall was proposed in order to predict thermal performance under varying climates(summer and winter). Unsteady state heat transfer equations were set up using an energy balance equation and solved using Gauss-Seidel iteration solution procedure. The thermal performance of the TIW determined from a wall surface and air layer temperature, non-airconditioned room temperature and air conditioning load. As a result, this numerical study shows that the TIW is effective in an air conditioning load reduction. Further experimental study is required to establish complete TIW system.
