  • In this paper, we study the electric characteristics of shading effects in photovoltaic module in case of outdoor operation. When fabricating PV module, solar cells are connected serially to obtain the high voltage because of its low open circuit voltage. And total current is determined by lowest current among solar cells. When the shading happens on PV module's surface, the current of shaded solar cell determine the total current flow. Because of this, generally by-pass diode is installed on junction box. The bypass diode operate when revered and shaded solar cell's voltage is over 0.6 voltage. The reverse-biased solar cell gives reduced maximum power of PV module and might give negative effect on durability. So, adequate by-pass installation and selection is needed.

  • In general, the thermo-diode is a device designed to allow heat to be transferred only in one direction. However, the bidirectional thermo-diode devised to change the heat flow in the desired direction can be used for the reduction of the heating load in winter as well as the cooling load in summer. In this study, a solar heating system using loop-type bidirectional thermo-diodes is designed and set up, also it is successfully applied to an outdoor test cell for the verification of its usefulness.

  • The effect of bypass diodes on the output energy of solar cells was investigated under the condition of partial shading. The maximum power point was estimated using the perturbation & observation algorithm, taking into account the correlation effect between the arrangement and number of bypass diodes. The performance of the bypass diode was tested under the consideration of the partial shading effect and simulated using a Matlab/Simulink.

  • Most PV modules are fabricated by 6 cell-strings with solar cells connected in series. Moreover, bypass diodes are generally installed every 2 cell-strings to prevent PV modules from a damage induced by current mismatch or partial shading. But, in the case of special purpose PV module, like as BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic), the number of cell-strings per module varies according to its size. Differ from a module employing even cell-strings, the configuration of bypass diode should be optimized in the PV module with odd strings because of oppositely facing electrodes. Hence, in this study, electrical characteristics of special purposed PV module with odd string was empirically and theoretically studied depending on arrangement of bypass diode. Here, we assumed that PV module has 3 strings and the number of bypass diodes in the system varies from 2 to 6. In case of 2 bypass diodes, shading on a center string increases short circuit current of the module, because of a parallel circuit induced by 2 bypass diodes connected to center string. Also, the loss is larger, as the shading area in the center string is enlarged. Thus, maximum power of the PV module with 2 bypass diode decreases by up to 59 (%) when shading area varies from 50 to 90 (%). On the other hand, In case of 3 and 6 bypass diodes, the maximum power reduction was within about 3 (W), even the shading area changes from 50 to 90 (%). As a result, It is an alternative to arrange the bypass diode by each string or one bypass diode in the PV module in order to completely bypass current in case of shading, when PV module with odd string are fabricated.

  • In this paper, we would like to introduce Electron Relay Enhancer (ERE), a supplementary device, which improves commercial solar cell efficiency minimizing electron-hole recombination of solar cell. The ERE in this study is mainly composed of two capacitors which are connected to AC power source and bridge diode system which controls electron flow direction. Two capacitors repeat collecting electrons from solar cell and pumping the collected electrons to load resistance or inverter through the bridge diode system. While one positively charged capacitor collect electrons, the other negatively charged one pumps electrons. A positively charged capacitor pulls the more exited electrons from the solar cell, before the exited electrons recombine the holes in solar cell. That is why the ERE system enhances solar cell efficiency. As a result, the measured power increase of the solar cell with the ERE is varied from 5.9 W to 25.6 W in each experimental condition. Maximal increase rate of the solar cell power with ERE is 30.8% of solar cell power without ERE.

  • PV model is presented based on the shockley diode equation. The simple model has a photo-current source, an single diode junction and a series resistance and includes temperature dependences. An accurate PV module electrical model is presented, matching with boost converter MPPT strategy and demosntarted in Matlab for a typical general purpose solar cell. Given solar insolation and temperature, the model returns current vector and MPP.

  • The photovoltaic module connects the voltage generated by the solar cell to the inverter. In the photovoltaic module, a diode is used to block the reverse voltage from the inverter to the solar cell. The heat generation of this diode is the main cause of the solar connection fire. In this paper, we propose a method to monitor the heat generation of diodes and prevent fire by using IoT devices.

  • In this paper, we present an online scheme for parameter estimation of solar cell, based on the model adjustment technique and a genetic algorithm. The ideal diode model and the diode model with series and shunt resistor are used to estimate their parameters. Simulation works using field data in the form of a VI characteristic curve are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • We show the novel hot electron based-solar energy conversion using tandem structured Schottky diode with double Schottky barriers. In this report, we show the effect of the double Schottky barriers on solar cell performance by enhancing both of internal photoemission and band-to-band excitation. The tandem structured Au/Si diode capped with TiO2 layer as second semiconductor exhibited improved ability for light harvesting. The proposed mechanisms consist of multiple reflections of hot electrons and additional pathway of solar energy conversion due to presence of multiple interfaces between thin gold film and semiconductors. Short-circuit photocurrent measured on the tandem structured Au/Si diodes under illumination of AM1.5 increased by approximately 70% from 3.1% to 5.3% and overall incident photon to electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) was enhanced in visible light, revealing that the concept of the double Schottky barriers have significant potential as novel strategy for light harvesting.

  • We analyze the current density - voltage (J - V) curve of a Cu(In,Ga)$Se_2$ (CIGS) thin-film solar cell measured at different irradiation power densities. For the solar-cell sample investigated in this study, the fill factor and power conversion efficiency decreased as the irradiation power density (IPD) increased in the range of 2 to 5 sun. Characteristic parameters of solar cell including the series resistance ($r_s$), the shunt resistance ($r_{sh}$), the photocurrent density ($J_L$), the saturation current density ($J_s$) of an ideal diode, and the coefficient ($C_s$) of the diode current due to electron-hole recombination via ionized traps at the p-n interface are determined from a theoretical fit to the experimental data of the J - V curve using a two-diode model. As IPD increased, both $r_s$ and $r_{sh}$ decreased, but $C_s$ increased.
