At Kyoto University, a continuous solar full-disk observation in CaII K line had been done during 44 years of 1926 - 1969. The observation was done with a Askania spectroheliograph on daily base. The images were taken on photographic plates. We started a project to archive these image data into a digital database which will be open to the public for scientific researches. One of the scientific usage of the database is to study the long term variation of the solar chromospheres. Since the area of CaII K plage area is a measure of solar chromospheric heating, we can do comparative study of the sunspot cycle and the chromospheric heating cycle of the sun. Another interesting field of scientific utilization of the database is the long term variation of the heating of terrestrial upper atmosphere. As was shown by Yokoyama, Masuda and Sato (2005), the area of the CaII K plage is a good proxy measure of solar EUV irradiation onto the upper atmosphere of the earth. Thus the completion of our database will serve to supply a basic and long-span data for upper atmospheric heating issues by the cooperative study with the Inter-university Upper atmosphere Global Observation NETwork (IUGONET) developed in Japan.
Sunlight makes it possible to adjust scale of electric power easily as a electric energy without air pollution. Solar cell to convert the sunlight to the electric energy has DC output which is influenced on temperature and irradiation time. Conversion of DC output from the solar cell to AC is necessary due to the fact that most loads to be used currently are compatible with AC generally. In the present work, Two-phase chopper system with two seperate groups to obtain two identical DC is used to preserve the energy from the solar cell in two battery. They are controlled to be operated around maximum output of the solar cell under the condition of constant voltage. Photovoltaic system with DC${\rightarrow}$AC conversion is also investigated for big capacity and two seperated electric power using two separate inverter.

The photovoltaic power system is performing power generation by being installed in outdoors. Therefore it has the characteristics affected by environmental factors. In particular, if the solar power generation facility connected to the grid, the power can be generated continuously in a state of being secured operating voltage of the inverter and solar irradiation. In that case, if an abnormal situation such as flooding or heavy rains has occur, the possibility of electric shock or damage of facilities due to current leakage or a floating matters is present. In this paper, we performed electrical safety assessment about the connection part, junction box and cable of the solar module when the solar power system was flooded. we also assessed whether or not the leakage current is occurred in case of the cable was damaged. As a result, in case of the leakage current is large, we can be known that it is the risk of electric shock as well as cause of inverter damage.
Recently, characteristic research by the changes in the spectrum, one of the factors that influence analysis of maximum output power of PV module, has been studied. In this paper, a one-day intensity of solar irradiation, change of spectrums with time and electrical output for spectrums are analyzed. As a result, blue-rich wavelength compared with red-rich wavelength has large variation of solar irradiance with time. It is recognized that change of solar irradiance is predominately on variation of blue-rich wavelength. Also in same intensity of solar irradiance, electrical output in blue-rich wavelength was 4-8[%] higher compared to in red-rich wavelength.
Distillation is one of many processes that can be used for the purification of water. It requires an energy input such as heat and solar radiation is a possible source of energy. In this process, water is evaporated, thus separating water vapor from the solute. The vapor is then condensed to pure water. The temperature of the water, the cavity of the enclosure and the surface of the glass was measured everyday. Fifteen points were chosen for the temperature measure using a thermocouple. The inner wall and the bottom of each still was painted black for good absorption of heat. The enforced glass was used for the cover for the entering of solar energy. The size of all of the water baths was the same, but the glass of the rectangular form had a tilted angle. In the case of fine or general weather, the volume of condensed water produced by $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ is very irregular compared to that of $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, In case of a rainy day, the occurrence of the volume of condensed water was similar to that of $15^{\circ}$ and $30^{\circ}$, but the volume of condensed water produced by $30^{\circ}$ was the highest.
The performance of a photovoltaic array is affected by temperature, solar insolation, partial shading effect, and array configuration. Maximum power point tracking(MPPT) techniques are employed in photovoltaic systems to make full utilization of the PV array output power which depends on solar irradiation and ambient temperature. As much as MPPT is important in photovoltaic systems, many MPPT techniques have been developed. In this paper, several major existing MPPT methods are comparatively analyzed and novel hybrid MPPT algorithm is proposed. The proposed hybrid MPPT algorithm is developed in combination with traditional MPPT methods to complement each other for improving performance and mitigating partial shading effects. The proposed algorithm is implemented and validated using MATLAB/Simulink simulation tool.
Low-cost, high efficiency solar cells are tremendous interests for the realization of a renewable and clean energy source. ZnTe based solar cells have a possibility of high efficiency with formation of an intermediated energy band structure by impurity doping. In this work, the ZnTe:O/CdS/ZnO structure was fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. A pulsed (10 Hz) Nd:YAG laser operating at a wavelength of 266 nm was used to produce a plasma plume from an ablated a ZnTe target, whose density of laser energy was 4.5 J/cm2. The base pressure of the chamber was kept at a pressure of approximately $4{\times}10-7Torr$. ZnO thin film with thickness of 100 nm was grown on to ITO/glass, and then CdS and ZnTe:O thin film were grown on ZnO thin film. Thickness of CdS and ZnTe:O were 50 nm and 500 nm, respectively. During deposition of ZnTe:O films, O2 gas was introduced from 1 to 20 mTorr. For fabricating ZnTe:O/CdS/ZnO solar cells, Au metal was deposited on the ITO film and ZnTe:O by thermal evaporation method. From the fabricated ZnTe:O/CdS/ZnO solar cell, current-voltage characteristics was measured by using HP 4156-a semiconductor parameter analyzer. Finally, solar cell performance was measured using an Air Mass 1.5 Global (AM 1.5 G) solar simulator with an irradiation intensity of 100 mW cm-2.
The thermal performance comparisons of the dish solar collector system are numerically investigated with mirror arrays and receiver shapes. In order to compare the performances of the dish solar collector systems, six different mirror arrays and four different receiver shapes are considered and the radiative heat flux distribution on the inside of the receiver is analyzed. A parabolic-shaped perfect mirror of which diameter is 1.5 m is considered as a reference of the mirror arrays. Five different mirror arrays of twelve identical parabolic -shaped mirror facets of which diameter are 0.4 m are proposed in this study. Their reflecting areas, which are 1.5 $m^2$, are the same. Four different receiver shapes are a dome, a conical, a cylindrical and a unicorn type. The solar irradiation reflected by mirrors is traced using the Monte-Carlo method. In addition, the radiative properties of the mirror surface can vary the thermal performance of the dish solar collector system so that the effects of the surface reflectivity and the surface absorptivity are considered. Based on the calculation, the design information of dish solar collector system for producing the electric power can be obtained. The results show that the dome type has the best performance in receiver shapes and the 2AND4INLINE has the best performance in mirror arrays except the perfect mirror.
The amount of solar irradiation obtained by a photovoltaic (PV) solar panel is the major factor determining the power generated by a PV system, and the array tilt angle is critical for maximizing panel radiation acquisition. There are three types of PV systems based on the manner of setting the array tilt angle: fixed, semi-fixed, and tracking systems. A fixed system cannot respond to seasonal solar altitude angle changes, and therefore cannot absorb the maximum available solar radiation. The tracking system continually adjusts the tilt angle to absorb the maximum available radiation, but requires additional cost for equipment, installation, operation, and maintenance. The semi-fixed system is only adjusted periodically (usually seasonally) to obtain more energy than a fixed system at an overall cost that is less than a tracking system. To maximize semi-fixed system efficiency, determining the optimal tilt angle adjustment schedule are required. In this research, we conducted a simulation to derive an optimal operation schedule for a semi-fixed system in Seoul, Korea (latitude $37.5^{\circ}$). We implemented a solar radiation acquisition model and PV genereation model on MATLAB. The optimal operation schedule was derived by changing the number of tilt angle adjustments throughout a year using a Dynamic Algorithm. The results show that adjusting the tilt angle 4 times a year was the most appropriate. and then, generation amount of PV system increased 2.80% compared with the fixed system. This corresponds to 99% compared to daily adjustment model. This increase would be quite valid as the PV system installation area increased.
