In this study, we study of luminescent solar concentrators comprise thick glass with broadband antireflection coating deposited on the top surfaces and inorganic phosphor layers contacted on the bottom surfaces. Solar cells are contacted to the lateral surfaces of the glass. Experimental results show the broadband antireflection coating increased the short-circuit current of the solar cell.
Understanding of reflectance of solar concentrators is important for assessing concentration performance. However inaccurate data about refractive indices of constituent materials and dust accumulation on the surface often prevent figuring out reflectance variations. The current study proposes an approach calculating concentrator reflectance based on the refractive index of glass obtained from reflectance and transmittance measurements. This approach improved accuracy of solar-averaged reflectance from 2.9% to 0.4% compared to the use of existing reference data. Reflectance variations with incidence angles are negligible up to $60^{\circ}C$ at various glass thicknesses. When concentrators are contaminated with dust during 2 months specular reflectance loss of vertically exposed concentrators is less than 7%. However for horizontally exposed concentrators the loss significantly increases up to 40% while dependence of reflectance on incidence angles becomes strong. Measurements of hemispherical reflectance indicate that 80 percentage of the loss comes from scattering rather than absorption by dust. Data of refractive index and reflectance provided in the current study will help estimate or model the concentrated solar flux.
On our return to India from Germany, we have worked on the development of parabolic solar concentrators with input and collaboration of German and Austrian inventors. We have gradually improved the solar technologies to include food processing based on inputs and feedback from users to fulfill their specific requirements. We will discuss the acceptability and commercialisation of various systems that we have successfully developed, their implications and their benefit. These success stories can work as multipliers. These concentrators can have various other applications. The Global Treaty Kyoto Protocol's CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) can result in a win-win situation for both developing and developed nations and the world environment at large - whereby developed nations get carbon credits by supporting renewable energy projects in developing nations. North-South dialogue and South-South dialogue can effectively foster global co-operation meaningfully to benefit People and environments ensuring sustainable development and protection of Our planet Earth, our only HOME!!!
The artificial increase in the solar intensity incident on solar cells using lenses or mirrors can allow solar cells to generate equivalent power with a lower cost. In application areas of Fresnel lenses as solar concentrators, several variations of design were devised and tested. Some PV systems still use commercially available flat Fresnel lenses as concentrators. In this study, we designed and optimized flat Fresnel lens and the 'light pipe' to develop 500X concentrated solar PV system. We performed rigorous ray tracing simulation of the flat Fresnel lens and light-pipe. The light-pipe can play imporatant roles of redistributing solar energy at the solar cell and increase the mechanical tolerance so that it can increase the lifetime of the high-concentration solar PV system and decrease the cost of manufacturing. To investigate the sensitivity of the solar power generated by the concentrated solar PV according to the performance of lens and light pipe, we performed raytracing and executed a simulation of electrical performance of the solar cell when it is exposed to the non-uniform illumination. We could conclude that we can generate 95 % or more energy compared with the energy that can be generated by perfectly uniform illumination once the total energy is given the same.

A Fresnel lens is an optical component which can be used as a cost-effective, lightweight alternative to conventional continuous surface optics. Fresnel lens solar concentrators continue to fulfill a market requirement as a system component in high volume cost effective Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) electricity generation. The basic principles of the fresnel lens are reviewed and some practical examples are described. To investigate the performance space of the Fresnel lens, a fast simulation method which is a hybrid between raytracing and analytical computation is employed to generate a cache of simulation data. Injection molders are warming up to the idea of cycling their tool surface temperature during the molding cycle rather than keeping it constant. Heat and cool process are now also finding that raising the mold wall temperature above the resin's glass-transition or crystalline melting temperature during the filling stage and product performance in applications from automotive to packaging to optics. This paper deals with the suitability of Fresnel lenses of imaging and non-imaging designs for solar energy concentration. The concentration fresnel lens confirmed machinability and optical transmittance and roughness measure through manufactured the prototype.

In this report, we present the design, fabrication, and experiment of a static solar system for electric vehicle (EV) applications. The static concentration component is composed of compound parabolic concentrators (CPCs) couplings with multi-junction solar cells, where a flat silicon panel is added to the bottom of the CPV structure to maximize power generation. This design allows the system to collect both direct sunlight and diffused sunlight. The CPCs were fabricated with acrylic with a geometric concentration ratio of 4×. We built a prototype with a (3 × 3) cell array of CPCs with a thickness of 25 mm, which is as thin as conventional flat photovoltaic panels, and performed an outdoor experiment that showed that after six hours of operation, the system had an acceptance angle of approximately 43° and an average daily efficiency of 22.85%.

Cylindrical parabolic solar concentrators of small concentration ratio are attractive options for working temperatures around $120^{\circ}C$. The heat gained can be utilized in many applications such as air conditioning, space heating, heating water and many others. These collectors can be easily manufactured and do not need to track the sun continuously. Using a heat pipe as a solar absorber makes the system more compact and easy to install. This study is devoted to modeling a system of cylindrical parabolic solar concentrators of small concentration ratio (around 5) fitted with a heat pipe absorber with a porous wick. The heat pipe is surrounded by evacuated glass tube to reduce thermal losses from the heat pipe. The liquid and vapor flow equations, energy equation, the internal and external boundary conditions were taken into consideration. The system of equations was solved and the numerical results were validated against available experimental and numerical results. The validated heat pipe model was inserted in an evacuated transparent glass tube as the absorber of the cylindrical parabolic collector. A calculation procedure was developed for the system, a computer program was developed and tested and numerical simulations were realized for the whole system. An experimental solar collector of small concentration, fitted with evacuated tube heat pipe absorber was constructed and instrumented. Experiments were realized with the concentrator axis along the E-W direction. Results of the instantaneous efficiency and heat gain were compared with numerical simulations realized under the same conditions and reasonably good agreement was found.
Using MBE growth method, GaAs/AlGaAs solar cell structure was grown. Deposited electrodes are Au/Ni/Ge for n-type and Au/Pt/Ti for p-type electrodes were deposited by E-beam evaporator. Indoor light concentrators were devised and fabricated in order to concentrate artificial solar rays. Also mirror and prism and Fresnel lens concentration system with solar simulator were devised and fabricated. Results of solar cell characteristics were measured with shutting system which can control the amount of light. Maximum power density was 2.13 W/$cm^2$ and maximum concentration was 124 sun, when mirror with Fresnel lens was used at $7854\;mm^2$ of shutter hole.
An energy generating greenhouse based on fluoropolymer envelope and fresnel lens is proposed. The outstanding properties of the fluoropolymer films make them very suitable for large scale solar applications. Extremely high optical transmission over the whole solar spectrum, combined with mechanical strength, and durability allows us to design a highly optimized greenhouses for both plant growing and energy generation. Systems such as photovoltaic triple junction cells are especially attractive since they have up to 35% efficiency with much less cell material when the sun beam is focused with concentrators such as fresnel lenses. Cooling such devices will enhance the efficiency and provide useful thermal energy that could be further utilized for various applications depending on the local demands. This article introduces the basic ideas and principles of the energy generating greenhouses as a first step towards the actual deployment of such systems under Korean environment.
The artificial increase in the solar intensity incident on solar cells using lenses or mirrors can allow solar cells to generate equivalent power with a lower cost. There are two types of concentration optics for solar energy conversion. One is to use mirrors, and the other is to use Fresnel lenses. The gains that can be achieved with a Fresnel lens or a parabolic mirror are compared. The result showed the gains are comparable and the two configurations were developed competitively. In application areas of Fresnel lenses as solar concentrators, several variations of design were devised and tested. Some PV systems still use commercially available flat Fresnel lenses as concentrators. A convex linear Fresnel lens to improve the concentration ratio and the efficiency is devised and flat linear Fresnel lens in thermal energy collection is utilized. In this study, we designed and optimized flat Fresnel lens and the 'light pipe' to develop 500X concentrated solar PV system. In the process, we compare the transmission efficiencies according to groove types. We performed rigorous ray tracing simulation of the flat Fresnel lenses. The computer aided simulation showed the 'grooves in case' has the better efficiency than that of 'grooves out case'. Based on the ray-trace results we designed and manufactured sample Fresnel lenses. The optical performance were measured and compared with ray-trace results. Finally, the optical efficiency was measured to be above 75%. All the design and manufacturing were performed based on that InGaP/InGaAs/Ge triple junction solar cell is used to convert the photon energy to electrical power. Field test will be made and analyzed in the near future.
