The purpose of this study was to search for an appropriate method of coating $TiO_2$ on orthodontic appliances. $TiO_2$ thin films were deposited on orthodontic wires and brackets using sol-gel, CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and PE-CVD (Plasma Enhanced-CVD) methods. The roughness of $TiO_2$-coated surfaces was investigated via scanning electron microscope (SEM) and adhesive strength of $TiO_2$ thin films was measured by adhesive tape pull test. Methylene blue degradation test was carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ and the corrosion resistance of $TiO_2$ thin films against fluoride solution was also analyzed by observing the surfaces of $TiO_2$-coated wires and brackets via SEM after immersion in sodium fluoride solution. Through the comparison of properties and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ thin films according to the coating methods, the following results were obtained. Smoother surfaces of $TiO_2$ thin films were generated by CVD or PE-CVD methods than through the sol-gel method or the control. Adhesive strength of the $TiO_2$ thin films was highest in PE-CVD and gradually became lower in the order of CVD, then the sol-gel method. Photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ thin films on methylene blue was the highest in PE-CVD and gradually became lower in the order of CVD, then the sol-gel method. Corrosion resistance of $TiO_2$ thin films against fluoride solution was stronger in CVD and PE-CVD methods than in the sol-gel method. The results of this study suggest that the CVD or PE-CVD methods is more appropriate than the sol-gel method for $TiO_2$ coating on orthodontic wires and brackets.
Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thick films with thicknesses of ㎛ were fabricated on silicon substrates using an aerosol deposition method. A PZT powder solution was prepared using a sol-gel process. The average diameters (d50) obtained were 1.67, 1.98, and 2.40μm when the pyrolysis temperatures were 300℃, 350℃, and 450℃ respectively. The as-deposited film had a uniform microstructure without any cracks or pores. The as-deposited films on silicon were annealed at a temperature of 700℃. The 20-㎛-thick PZT film showed good adherence between the PZT film and substrate, with no tearing observed in the conventional solid phase process. This was probably because the presence of pores produced from organic residue during annealing relieved the residual stresses in the deposited film.
We report on the optimization of the fabrication process of hybrid sol-gel thin film deposition to produce low cost $1 {\times} 16$ splitters for optical communications. We learn that sol-gel film thickness is dependent upon the spinning speeds and viscosity of the sol-gel solutions and refractive index upon the dopant concentrations of Al and Zr in the sol solutions. We could find the optimized physical conditions to achieve the desired thickness of core and cladding layers. We will further carry out the fabrication and measurements of insertion loss, polarization dependent loss (PDL), etc. for the performance of fabricated splitter devices.

Sol-gel binder was prepared by hydrolysis and condensation reaction using boehmite sol and methyltrimethoxysilane as a function of aging-time. The coating slurry was composed of a plate-shape alumina in the sol-gel binder for the EPD process, in which particles dispersed in the slurry were deposited on the electrode under an electric field due to the surface charge. We studied the effects of three parameters: the content of boehmite, the aging time, and the applied voltage, on the physical, thermal, and electrical properties of the hybrid composite films by EPD. The amount of boehmite was 10 ~ 20 wt% and the aging time was 0.5 ~ 72, with a fixed amount of plate-shape alumina of 10 wt%. The condition of applied voltage was 5 ~ 30 V with a distance of 2 cm between the electrode during the EPD process. We confirmed that a structure of hybrid composite films of well-ordered plate alumina was deposited on the substrate when the film was prepared using a sol-gel binder composed of 15 wt% boehmite with 1 hr aging time and EPD at 10 V. The process shows a weight loss of 7% at $500^{\circ}C$ in TGA and a breakdown voltage of 8 kV at $87{\mu}m$.
Thick inorganic-organic hybrid films were prepared on ITO-coated glass substrates by the electrophoretic sol-gel deposition of polyphenylsilsesquioxane particles. The morphology of the deposited films changed from the aggregate of the spherical particles to monolith by heat treatment at temperatures higher than $200^{\circ}C$. Transparency of the films was significantly improved accompanied by the morphological change of the particles. The degree of the morphological change was governed by two factors; maximum heat treatment temperature and heating rate. Transparent thick films of ca. 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ in thickness were obtained only by heat treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 2h with rapid heating from room temperature to $400^{\circ}C$. These films obtained were strongly adhered to the ITO-coated glass substrates and has a very smooth surface.
The effects of the mole concentrations of precursor solution on the microstructure and dielectric properties of sol-gel deposited $Ba_{0.85}$S $r_{0.15}$Ti $O_3$(BST) thin films have been investigated. The films were of single perovskite phase with strong (100) preferred orientation when grown on LaNi0$_3$ buffered Pt/Ti/ $SiO_2$Si substrates using a diluted precursor solution. Variation of the precursor solution concentration resulted in a different microstructure and, in turn, affected the tunability of the sol-gel deposited films. It was observed that leakage currents increased asymmetrically for the negative and positive bias voltage with decreasing thickness. Overall results suggest that those BST films have acceptable properties f3r applications as room-temperature tunable elements.
Silica membranes were prepared on a porous ${\alpha}$-alumina tube with pore size of 150nm by sol-gel and chemical vapor deposition(CVD) method for hydrogen separation at high temperatures. Silica and ${\gamma}$-lumina membranes formed by the sol-gel method possessed a large amount of mesopores of a Knudsen diffusion regime. In order to improve the $H_2$ selectivity, silica was deposited in the sol-gel derived silica/${\gamma}$-alumina layer by thermal decomposition of tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) at $600^{\circ}C$. The CVD with forced cross flow through the porous wall of the support was very effective in plugging mesopores that were left unplugged in the membranes. The CVD modified silica/alumina composite membrane completely rejected nitrogen permeation and thus showed a high $H_2$ selectivity by molecular sieve effect. the permeation of hydrogen was explained by activated diffusion and the activation energy was 9.52kJ/mol.

Usually for the commercial preparation of barium titanate films or ceramics the reaction atmosphere must be preferably in air. However, normally air is not used because it contains carbon dioxide, which can easily react with barium to form the undesired product barium carbonate, leading to unwanted second-phase formation in the (mal stages of the process. In the present work a series of perovskite barium titanate films was prepared by the sol-gel method, using a metal alkoxide solutions in the electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The influence of several process parameters, like sintering temperature of sol preparation before EPD and heat-treatment temperature and non-oxidized atmosphere, on the film properties is described.

Electrochromism (EC) is defined as a phenomenon in which a change in color takes place in the presence of an applied voltage. Because of their low power consumption, high coloration efficiency, EC devices have a variety of potential applications in smart windows, mirror, and optical switching devices. An EC devices generally consist of a transparent conducting layer, electrochromic cathodic and anodic coloring materials and an ion conducting electrolyte. EC has been widely studied in transition metal oxides(e.g., WO$_3$, NiO, V$_2$O$\sub$5/) Among these materials, WO$_3$ is a most interesting material for cathodic coloration materials due to its lush coloration efficiency (CE), large dynamic range, cyclic reversibility, and low cost material. WO$_3$ films have been prepared by a variety of methods including vacuum evaporation, chemical vapor deposition, electrodeposition process, sol-gel synthesis, sputtering, and laser ablation. Sol-gel process is widely used for oxide film at low temperature in atmosphere and requires lower capital investment to deposit large area coating compared to vacuum deposition process.
