A double-layer optical sensing membrane has been fabricated to measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH value simultaneously. (tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (Rudpp) ruthenium(II)) as a DO sensitive dye has been mixed in the methyl trimethoxy silane (MTMS) sol-gel solution and coated onto one well in a 24-well microtiter plate. On the DO-sensing layer the GA (3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxy silane (GPTMS), 3-aminopropyl trimethoxy silane (APTMS)) sol-gel solution mixed with 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid trisodium salt (HPTS) has been coated and used to measure pH values. The double-layer sensing membrane was affected by ionic strength and temperature. The double-layer sensing membrane for DO and pH has been applied to online monitor in microorganism cultivation processes and showed a good performance.

Fabrication and electrical and mechanical properties of piezoelectric micro bending actuators (PMBA) using sol-gel-multi-coated thick PZT films and MEMS processes were investigated. PMBA could be used for design and fabrication of micro fluidic devices, for example, micro-pumps, micro dispensers, and so on. PMBA were fabricated using 2 um thick PZT films on Pt (350 nm)/$SiO_2$ (500 nm)/Si ($300\mu\textrm{m}$) substrates and MEMS processes. 7 types of PMBA were fabricated with areas of silicon diaphragms, PZT films and top electrodes. When the sizes of silicon diaphragms, PZT films and Pt top electrodes were reduced from 3000$\times$$1389\mu\textrm{m}$, 4000$\times$$1000\mu\textrm{m}$ and 4000$\times$$900\mu\textrm{m}$ down to 14%, 14% and 11 % of them, respectively, the center displacements of PMBA were decreased from 0.68 um to 0.10 um at 5 Hz and 12 Vpp. So, PMBA with large areas showed larger displacements than PMBA with small areas and experimental results were also good agreement with the plate and shell theory.
SiO$_2$ and PDMS/SiO$_2$ xerogels which are derived PDMS into TEOS have been synthesized by sol-gel process and controlled pore size and distribution through 2 step acid/base catalyzed processes using HCI and NH$_4$OH as a catalyst. In HCl catalyzed SiO$_2$ and PDMS/SiO$_2$ xerogels, pH and gellation time of xerogel were 2.3~2.5 and 12~13 days, respectively, and the shape of xerogel was identified to pellet type and column type. Under acidic condition of final reaction solution, the hydrolysis rate is accelerating, resulting in long gel times. The shape of xerogel is pellet type. In contrast, under less acidic condition, the condensation rate is accelerating, resulting in shorter gel times and the shape of xerogel is column type. The surface area and average Pore size were changed 400$\rightarrow$600($\m^2$/g) and 15$\rightarrow$28$\AA$, respectively, depending to the increase of the mole ratio of HCl/NH$_4$OH, and represented uniform pore size distribution. It is that all the alkoxide groups are hydrolyzed by HCl after the first step and the condensation rate is enhanced by NH$_4$OH. The regular backbone structures of silica are formed at low temperature and the uniform pores are produced by heat treatment.
Nanofood can be simply defined as natural polymer particles containing functional food materials in nanoscale that are synthesized by polymerization or emulisification process. They have very uniform diameters in the range of 1 to 100 nm and extensive surface areas due to the small particle size in spite of their non-porosity. Although the technique to produce nanofood has not Bong developing history, many works have been achieved in various fields. Nanofood has a lot of special advantages, such as functionality, diversity, applicability, etc. In case of the domestic food industries, however, the accumulation of related technique is insufficient against developed countries except used food materials. Also, it is difficult to acquire technical know-how from the developed countries that possess those technologies. We have been studied on preparing functional nanofood and developing new production processes since 1999. Last 5 years we have laid the foundation on the preparation of nanofood and now are focusing on developing new processes of nanofood and expending the field of its applications.
Dissolved oxygen, pH and cell concentration have been online monitored in cultivation processes with Escherichia coli by using a $MABOOMS^{TM}$ (microplate-based bioreactor with optical online monitoring systems). Fluorescent sensing membranes containing Ru ${(dpp)_3}^{2+}$ or HPTS were prepared with GA sol-gel matrix and coated into a well of a 24-well microplate. Fluorescence intensity was measured and correlated to the dissolved oxygen or pH. Cell concentrations were also online monitored by measuring optical reflectance at 650 nm. A well of a 24-well microplate could also be divided into 4 parts, each of which was coated with fluorescent sensing membranes for the detection of dissolved oxygen or pH. The 24-well microplate coated with fluorescent sensing membranes or a 4-divided sensing membrane. was used to online monitor the dissolved oxygen, pH and cell concentration during E. coli cultivations. The online monitoring results showed the characteristics of cell growth in cultivation processes very well.
Analysis of geological data, relating to occurrence and formation of diamonds as well as host rocks, inclined author to have different outlook on the diamond genesis and to establish a proposition on their formation at pneumatolytic-hydrothermal conditions near superficial Earth zones. Based on that theoretical foundations and experimental works, the first low-pressure and low-temperature hydrothermal diamond synthesis from water solution in pressure autoclave was executed. As a result, the natural diamond seed crystal grew bigger ad coupling of the synthetic diamond single-crystalline grains were obtained. SEM documentation proofs that parallely paragenetic crystallization of quartz and diamond, and nucleation of new octahedral diamond crystals brush take place on the seed crystal surface. Forecast of none times growth of diamond industrial application at 2000 and seventeen times at 2010 with reference to 1995, needs technology of large and pure single-crystals diamond synthesis. Growth of the stable and destressed diamond single-crystals in the pseudo-metastable diamond plot, may be realized with processes going through the long time and with participation of free radicals catalysts admixtures only. Sol-gel colloidal processes are an example of environment which form stable crystals in thermodynamically unstable conditions through a long time. Paper critically discusses a whole way of studies on the diamond synthesis, from high-pressure and high-temperature processes through chemical vapour deposition up to hydrothermal experiments.
Fe/$SiO_2$ core-shell type composite nanoparticles have been synthesized using a reverse micelle process combined with metal alkoxide hydrolysis and condensation. Nano-sized $SiO_2$ composite particles with a core-shell structure were prepared by arrested precipitation of Fe clusters in reverse micelles, followed by hydrolysis and condensation of organometallic precursors in micro-emulsion matrices. Microstructural and chemical analyses of Fe/$SiO_2$ core-shell type composite nanoparticles were carried out by TEM and EDS. The size of the particles and the thickness of the coating could be controlled by manipulating the relative rates of the hydrolysis and condensation reaction of TEOS within the micro-emulsion. The water/surfactant molar ratio influenced the Fe particle distribution of the core-shell composite particles, and the distribution of Fe particles was broadened as R increased. The particle size of Fe increased linearly with increasing $FeNO_3$ solution concentration. The average size of the cluster was found to depend on the micelle size, the nature of the solvent, and the concentration of the reagent. The average size of synthesized Fe/$SiO_2$ core-shell type composite nanoparticles was in a range of 10-30 nm and Fe particles were 1.5-7 nm in size. The effects of synthesis parameters, such as the molar ratio of water to TEOS and the molar ratio of water to surfactant, are discussed.
Organic/inorganic composite electrolyte membranes were prepared for dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)s with various molecular weight (400, 600, 1,500 and 3,400) was ethoxysilated to fabricate organic/inorganic composite materials through sol-gel processes. The electrolyte membranes were produced by doping the composite materials with NaI and $I_2$, and their ionic conducting behavior was investigated. The ionic conductivity of the composite electrolyte was highly affected by the PEG molecular weight, and the highest conductivity was shown by the composite membrane prepared with PEG with the molecular weight of 1,500. The composite electrolyte membranes showed considerable improvement of ionic conductivity. Compared to PEO electrolyte membranes, the composite electrolyte membrane prepared by PEG, MW 1,500, showed much higher ionic conductivity.
The time-lag-effect of alkali salts on the gelation of sodium alginate-$CaSO_4{\cdot}$1/2 $H_2O$ is compared with Miyake's data, and then the formation rate of the elastics measured by the continuous method (an improved Schwedoff's method) and the change of rigidity with metallic oxides are studied as follows: (1) The gelation processes of sodium alginate and $CaSO_4{\cdot}$1/2 $H_2O$-aqueous sol are studied by measuring, continuously the increases of tensions ofsamples. (2) The time-lag-effect of $Na_3PO_4$ on the formation rate of the elastic gel is larger than that of $Na_2CO_3$, but the difference between the effects of the two alkali salts on the rate is found not so greater than predicted in Miyake's data. (3) Any regularities of the effect on the rate by metallic oxides are not observed. The increasing effects of the rates of $SiO_2$ and MgO are relatively large, and that of ZnO is relatively small. However, $Al_2O_3$, $Sb_2O_3$ and $TiO_2$show some decreasing effects. As a result it is noted that the regularities do not depend on the effect of oxide species and their amounts. (4) It is not found proportionality between the rigidity and the gelation rate. However, the increasing effect of the rigidity with the addition of metallic oxides can be observed. The rigidity increasing rate of MgO is the largest of them.
Hydrophobic Organic-Inorganic (O-I) hybrid materials prepared by sol-gel process have been widely used at functional coating fields such as coatings for anti-corrosion, anti-icing, self-cleaning, anti-reflection. The key point for fabricating hydrophobic surface is to optimize the surface energy and roughness of the coating films. There are typical processes to control the surface energy and roughness which are 'In situ fabricating', 'Pre-fluorinating/Post-roughening', 'Pre-roughening/ Post-fluorinating'. In this study, particle-binder process was used for in-situ fabrication of hydrophobic coating films. Various O-I hybrid compounds prepared using several kinds of alkoxysilane compounds were used as a binder for silica nanoparticles at particle-binder process. To study effect of fluorine content and weight ratio of particle : binder on the hydrophobicity and surface morphology, Hydrophobic coating films were prepared onto glass substrate at various content of fluorine content of O-I hybrid binder and weight ratio of particle : binder. The coating films prepared using O-I hybrid binder (GPTi-HF10) having 10 wt% of fluorine content showed the highes water contact angle (107.52±1.6°). The coating films prepared at 1:3 weight ratio of GPTi-HF10 : silica nanoparticle exhibited the highest water contact angle (130.84±1.99°).
