Recently, agricultural methods are changing from experience-based agriculture to data-based agriculture. Changes in agricultural production due to the 4th Industrial Revolution are largely occurring in three areas: smart sensing and monitoring, smart analysis and planning, and smart control. In order to realize open-field smart agriculture, information on the physical and chemical properties of soil is essential. Conventional physicochemical measurements are conducted in a laboratory after collecting samples, which consumes a lot of cost, labor, and time, so they are quickly measured in the field. Measurement technology that can do this is urgently needed. In addition, a soil analysis system that can be carried and moved by the measurer and used in Korea's rice fields, fields, and facility houses is needed. To solve this problem, our goal is to develop and commercialize software that can collect soil samples and analyze the information. In this study, basic soil composition measurement was conducted using soil composition measurement sensors consisting of hardness measurement and electrode sensors. Through future research, we plan to develop a system that applies soil sampling using a CCD camera, ultrasonic sensor, and sampler. Therefore, we implemented a sensor and soil analysis UI that can measure and analyze the soil condition in real time, such as hardness measurement display using a load cell and moisture, PH, and EC measurement display using conductivity.

Various types of micro cone penetrometers have been developed by using strain gages for the layered soil detection. Strain gages, however, are affected by several factors such as temperature, self heating and lead wire length. In this study, micro cone penetrometers with 3~7mm in diameter, are developed by using FBG sensor to overcome the defects of the strain gage, and compensate the effect of temperature during penetration. In order to verifiy the accuracy and reliability of the developed FBG cone, the cone penetration test is performed on the layered soil. The tip resistance of FBG snesor shows excellent sensitivity, and can detect the interface of the layered soils with higher resolution. In addition, the 3mm micro cone penetrometer which is impossible cone diameter by using strain gages presents much higher sensitivity than the 7mm cone penetrometer. This study suggests that FBG sensor is a useful sensor for manufaturing the ultra small sized cone, and effectively detects the interface of the layered soil.
Optical diffuse reflectance sensing has potential for rapid and reliable on-site estimation of soil properties. For good results, proper calibration to measured soil properties is required. One issue is whether it is necessary to develop calibrations using samples from the specific area or areas (e.g., field, soil series) in which the sensor will be applied, or whether a general "factory" calibration is sufficient. A further question is if specific calibration is required, how many sample points are needed. In this study, these issues were addressed using data from 42 paddy fields representing 14 distinct soil series accounting for 74% of the total Korean paddy field area. Partial least squares (PLS) regression was used to develop calibrations between soil properties and reflectance spectra. Model evaluation was based on coefficient of determination ($R^2$) root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP), and RPD, the ratio of standard deviation to RMSEP. When sample data from a soil series were included in the calibration stage (full information calibration), RPD values of prediction models were increased by 0.03 to 3.32, compared with results from calibration models not including data from the test soil series (calibration without site-specific information). Higher $R^2$ values were also obtained in most cases. Including some samples from the test soil series (hybrid calibration) generally increased RPD rapidly up to a certain number of sample points. A large portion of the potential improvement could be obtained by adding about 8 to 22 points, depending on the soil properties to be estimated, where the numbers were 10 to 18 for pH, 18-22 for EC, and 8 to 22 for total C. These results provide guidance on sampling and calibration requirements for NIR soil property estimation.

This paper proposes a Ubiquitous Greenhouse Management System (UGMS) based on USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) which can be real-time monitoring and controlling of greenhouse's facilities by collecting environment and soil information with environment and soil sensors, and CCTV camera. The existing systems were controlled simply by temperature. Also, it was possible to monitor only at control room in a greenhouse. For solving problems of the exiting system, our system can remotely monitor and control greenhouse by considering environment information. The detail components are as follows. The system includes the sensor manager and the CCTV manager to gather and manage greenhouse information with soil and the environment sensors, and camera. Also the system has the greenhouse database storing greenhouse information and the greenhouse server transmitting greenhouse information to the GUI and controlling greenhouse. Finally, the GUI showing greenhouse condition to users exists in our system. To verify the executability of the UGMS, after developing the greenhouse model, we confirmed that our system could monitor and control the greenhouse condition at remote GUI by applying the UGMS's components to the model.
In order to develop a new corrosion sensor for detecting and monitoring the external and internal corrosion damage of buried pipeline, the electrochemical property of sensors and the correlation of its output to corrosion rate of steel pipe, were evaluated by electrochemical methods in two soils of varying resistivity (5,000 ohm-cm, 10,000 ohm-cm) and synthetic tap water environments. In this paper, two types of galvanic probes were manufactured: copper-pipeline steel (Cu-CS) and stainless steel-pipeline steel (SS-CS). The corrosion behavior in synthetic groundwater and synthetic tap water for the different electrodes was investigated by potentiodynamic test. The comparison of the sensor output and corrosion rates revealed that a linear relationship was found between the probe current and the corrosion rates. In the soil resistivity of $5,000{\Omega}-cm$ and tap water environments, only the Cu-CS probe had a good linear quantitative relationship between the sensor output current and the corrosion rate of pipeline steel. In the case of $10,000{\Omega}-cm$, although the SS-CS probe showed a better linear correlation than that of Cu-CS probe, the Cu-CS probe is more suitable than SS-CS probe due to the high current output.
Vegetables production in greenhouse are typically intensely managed with high inputs of fertilizers and irrigation water, which increases the risk of ground-water nitrate contamination. In 2010 and 2011, a study was conducted to determine the appropriate depth of soil moisture sensor for automatic irrigation control to use water and nitrogen efficiently under subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) systems. The irrigation line for SDI placed 30 cm below soil surface and tensiometer was used as soil moisture sensor. Three tensiometer treatments placed at 10 (SDI-T10), 20 (SDI-T20) and 30 cm (SDI-T30) depths below soil surface under SDI. These are also compared to SUR-T20 treatment where tensiometer placed at 20 cm below soil surface under surface drip irrigation (SUR) systems. The growth of cucumber was not statistically different between SUR and SDI without SDI-T30 treatment. Fruit yields (Mg/ha) were 57.0 and 56.9 (SDI-T10), 56.0 and 60.5 (SDI-T20), 40.9 and 41.2 (SDI-T30) and 56.6 and 54.3 (SUR-T20) for 2010 and 2011, respectively. Slightly higher total yield was observed in tensiometer placed 20 cm below the soil surface, although no significant differences were found between SDI-T10 and SDI-T20 under SDI treatments. In addition, nitrogen application rates and daily irrigation rates were lowest in SDI-T20 compared with other SDIs and SUR treatments. Nitrogen and daily irrigation application under SDI-T20 was lower than that under SUR-T20 by 6.0%. These findings suggested tensiometer 20 cm depth under SDI systems was best for cucumber production in greenhouse.
High performance concrete (HPC) has been extensively used in thin overlay for repair purpose due to its excellent strength and durability. This paper presents an experiment, where the sensor-instrumented HPC overlays have been followed by dynamic strain and moisture content monitoring for 1 year, under normal traffic. The vibrating wire and soil moisture sensors were embedded in overlay before construction. Four given HPC mixes (2 original mixes and their shrinkage-modified mixes) were used for overlays to contrast the strain and moisture results. A calibration method to accurately measure the moisture content for a given concrete mixture using soil moisture sensor was established. The monitoring results indicated that the modified mixes performed much better than the original mixes in shrinkage cracking control. Weather condition and concrete maturity at early age greatly affected the strain in concrete. The strain in HPC overlay was primarily in longitudinal direction, leading to transverse cracks. Additionally, the most moisture loss in concrete occurred at early age. Its rate was very dependent on weather. After one year, cracking survey was carried out by vision to verify the strain direction and no cracks observed in shrinkage modified mixes.
Achievements in the real-time soil spectro-photometer are: an improved soil penetrator to ensure a uniform soil surface under high speed conditions, real-time collecting of underground soil reflectance, getting underground soil color images, use of a RTK-GPS, and all units are arranged for compactness. With the soil spectrophotometer, field experiments were conducted in a 0.5 ha paddy field. With the original reflectance, averaging and multiple scatter correction, Kubelka-Munk (KM) transformation as soil absorption, its 1st and 2nd derivatives were calculated. When the spectra was highly correlated with the soil parameters, stepwise regression analysis was conducted. Results include the best prediction models for moisture, soil organic matter (SOM), nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3-N$), pH and electric conductivity (EC), and soil maps obtained by block kriging analysis.

Considerable progress has been made in the application of time-domain reflectrometry(TDR) to measurement of soil water content. The TDR provides a means of monitoring the water content of soil over a wide range of values, in the field and in the laboratory The TDR measures the volumetric moisture content of the soil via a bureid sensor(probe). Probes can be buried and monitored remotely and an immediate result can be obtained. In addition to, the results are very reliable.
E. coli TG1 pBS TOM Green was cultured to produce toluene-o-monooxygenase (TOM). A biosensor system was successfully constructed using purified TOM to effectively detect trichloroethene (TCE) and tetrachloroethene (PCE), which represent some of the major contaminants in groundwater and soil. In order to utilize TOM as a sensor, NADH, a biological oxidizer, was replaced with hydrogen peroxide which is a chemical oxidizing agent. A three-layered sandwich-type sensing tip was fabricated on the outside of the hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride membrane. TCE and PCE were applied to the sensor and the hydrogen ions were measured by a fiber optic fluorometer using fluoresceinamine. Calibration curves were obtained for TCE and PCE in the concentration range of 0.2-100 mg/l, and the detection limit of the system was $10{\mu}g/l$ for TCE and PCE.
