  • A site containing buried solid waste and treated water and oil storage containers from a leather manufacturing plant was studied through soil and groundwater pollution and electrical resistivity surveys with the aim of identifying areas polluted by leachate generated by landfilling with leather waste and leakage wastewater. It was found that TPH and Zn exceeded environmental standards for soil pollution and, for leachate and groundwater, Cr(VI) concentrations exceeded standard levels for groundwater quality. An electrical resistivity survey was used to elucidate soil and groundwater pollution characteristics and diffusion pathways. Ten survey lines were set up with an electrode spacing of 5 m in a dipole-dipole array. The hydraulic characteristics of soil determined by groundwater contamination surveys matched well the low-resistivity-anomaly zones. Electrical resistivity surveys of areas containing contaminated soil and groundwater that have irregular strata due to waste reclamation are thus useful in highlighting vertical and horizontal pollutant diffusion pathways and in monitoring contaminated and potentially contaminated areas.

  • As grouting materials for ground improvement, silicate materials such as water glass, silica-sol and so forth are used worldwide. However, they may pollute underground water. In this study, fish poison test(Korean standard industrial code KS M 0111) which estimates toxicity for fish is applied to evaluate the toxic effect by grouting materials. From the test result of the sample made of LW, LC50(Median Lethal Concentration) reaches within 24 hours. In case of the silica-sol, it does not even in 96 hours. Therefore, we can conclude that the sililca-sol grouting method is more free from the danger of underground water pollution. From the result that the mortality of fish under the condition of pH 8.6 is 0% within 96 hours, the groundwater can be saved by controlling pH below 8.6 for the grouting in the field.

  • Selection of appropriate liner type would be the most important factor to prevent groundwater contamination by leachate from waste management site. This report introduces the IWEM (Industrial Waste Management Evaluation Model) developed by US EPA to evaluate the potential pollution of groundwater under the waste management unit and to suggest an appropriate type of liner, and provides with the results of IWEM application to a coal-ash landfill site in Korea as a case study. IWEM uses a standard method using a database, a decision-making process based on site characteristics, and the user-friendly input-and-output system. Authors evaluate this model to be applicable in Korea provided that the database is replaced into local data.

  • The Boroo area in Mongolia is known to have been contaminated with heavy metals due to irregular gold mining activities and the release of mercury from gold extraction process. Soil and mine tailings were collected to analyze contamination patterns of heavy metals in the Boroo area. Analyses revealed that mercury, arsenic and cadmium concentrations exceeded the regulatory standard of the nation (Mongolia National Standard). In case of mercury, about 80% of the survey area was over the limit and the concentration distribution heavily influenced by influx of mercury through water transport. Soil contamination by arsenic was most severe that the concentration exceeded the regulatory limit in almost entire survey area, showing peak concentrations at nearby streams and river along with ore processing facilities. For cadmium, about 20% of the survey area was over the limit with the concentration distribution similar to that of arsenic.

  • This study was carried out to evaluation the recycled waste soils from construction site for planting soil. For this purpose, the concentrations of polluted materials and the physico-chemical properties were measured at recycled soil samples of an industrial waste treating company in the Metropolitan landfill area. The concentrations of polluted materials did not exceed to the standard critical levels of soil pollution in all analyzed items. The measures of the samples soil texture (loamy sand), bulk density (1.09~1.32g/$cm^3$), saturated hydraulic conductivity ($1.6{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}1.8{\times}10^{-3}$cm/sec), solid phase distribution (0.4~0.5$m^3/m^3$), porosity (0.5~0.6$m^3/m^3$), Ex. $K^+$ (1.0~1.2cmol/kg), Ex. $Mg^{2+}$ (0.2~0.6cmol/kg) were identified as not worse than those of conventional planting soil. But the sample soils have serious problems for planting soil such as high levels of pH (9.6~11.5), EC (0.78~1.84ds/m) and Ex. $Ca^{2+}$ (25.6~34.5cmol/kg), low level of organic matter (0.2~0.3%). It is required to improve pH, EC and Ex. $Ca^{2+}$ of sample soils. Consequently, the results suggested a high potential of recycling of the wastes soils for planting soil.

  • The contamination characteristics of BTEX and TPH components in silty soils with the oil leakage event from point source were studied. The over ratios of three soil pollution standard for TPH component were $1.5{\sim}1.7$ times higher than that of BTEX component. The mean and maximum values of BTEX and TPH components with sample points were B-zone > A-zone > C-zone, and the highest concentrations were measured at $1{\sim}2m$ depth below surface. BTEX and TPH components were increased with linear distance in zone within 120 m and 80 m from point source. For the zone more than 120 m, BTEX and TPH concentrations were under soil pollution standard. The cutoff values of indicator kriging using BTEX and TPH components were defined as confirmative limit, warn- ing limit and counterplan limit. The variograms of indicator-transformed data were selected linear model. The contamination ranges of BTEX and TPH components using confirmative limit and warning limit were estimated similar, but the contamination range of those using counterplan limit was much reduced. The maximum contamination probabilities were estimated by probability maps usinB confirmative limit, warning limit and counterplan limit. The maximum contamination probabilities with three soil pollution standard were estimated 26%, 26% and 13% for BTEX component, and 44%, 38% and 26% for TPH component.

  • This study was conducted to serve as the basis for establishing a standard cultivation, which enhances the alternative utilization of pig manure, a major cause of environmental pollution, by finding a means for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for eco-friendly cultivation. In a laboratory, $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ emission patterns were investigated corresponding to incremental pig manure treatments in paddy soil. The emissions peaked 12 to 27 days after manure application in the 100~400% applications. It was found that increasing applications of pig manure resulted an increase in $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ emissions. Additionally, application of more than 150% emitted a larger amount of these gasses than applying chemical fertilizer. However, the test application of 100% pig manure emitted a smaller amount of $CH_4$ and hence Global Warming Potential (GWP) than those emitted by chemical fertilizer. If appropriate amount of fertilization is applied in compliance with the standard application rate, the pig manure may be effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the soil environment made more favorable than with the use of chemical fertilizer.

  • We threat sludge by heating methods with low pollution and high efficiency. Organic and inorganic components in Sludge can be almost removed through the heaging treatment process, and thefinal products are called artifical aoil or artificial media which are depended on temperature control. It can be recycled on the agricultural sites. Because it contained sort of organic matters while high heaging process with addition. To use them as agricultural materials, it need to know their characteristic transform in the nature. So we have planting bean and corn for two years with standard planting methods and to anticipate changing characteristics of artificial media and artificial soil by staying it natural condition, analyze it physical and chemical characteristics. This study will be contributed to reduce mass enviornmental problems by the treatment of Sludge and make it possible application for a agriculture use.

  • This study was performed to suggest the basic data and plans for the establishment of safe water supply plans in simple water supply piped system in the rural areas. In 4 different places, 24 points of water sources 36 points of taps from water sources were sampled. Of the whole 60 points, 55 points were ground water and 5 points were surface water. 14 items were measured for the analysis of water quality on each samples. The measured items were analyzed again by statistical method ; cluster analysis and principle components analysis. The results of this study are as followed. 1) In water quality analysis on water sources, 4 items, bacteria, E.coli, NH3-N and Fe exceed the standard. Of 24 points, 20 points(83%) on bacteria, 1 point(4%) on NH3-N and Fe exceed the standard. 2) In water quality analysis on near and remote taps, 4 items, bacteria, E.coli, NH3-N and Fe , exceed the standard. Of 36 points, 20 points (81%) on bactria, 1 pint(3%) on NH3-N and Fe exceed the standard. 3)Cluster analysis on water quality shows the differences by the kinds of water sources, geographical characteristics and distance from water sources. 4) Principle components analysis on ground water shows that Factor 1 and Factor 3 are natural fluctuation by the content of soil. Also, Factor 2 and Factor 4 are penetration of pollutants to underground. Therefore, it is needed to take deeper ground water in order to prevent from pollution in the areas which have ground water as water source . 5) Principle components analysis on surface water shows that Factor 1 is penetration of vacteria from surface to water source when rainfalls. Also, Factor 2 is fluctuation of water quality by the geographical characteristics. Therefore, the counterplans against non-point pollution source must be taken. Filtration and disinfection facilities are needed in the areas which have surface water as water source.
