A pot experiment was carried out to find out the effects of the sludge application on corn and Chinese cabbage growth and changes in soil chemical properties with sludges collected from 4 plants at 0, 12.5, 25, 50, and $100Mg\;ha^{-1}$ levels and chemical fertilizer. With the corn experiment, the pot where sludge and chemical fertilizers were treated together, greater amount of sludge resulted in initial growth inhibition. In general, higher sludge treatment rates resulted in better growth in the end, whereas initial growth was inhibited due to high the electrical conductivity of saturated extracts(ECe) for the Chinese cabbage. However, the highest yield among sludge treatments was lower than the yield with chemical fertilizers. While the treatments resulted in chemical changes in soil showing differences of cation exchange capacity, organic matter contents, and nitrogen contents, hardly any changes were detected before and after crops were grown. Inorganic nutrients such as Na, K, Ca and Mg showed similar changes. The ECe in soil saturation extract decreased after crops were grown. The more sludge was treated, the greater was the decrease. The differences of ECe in the soil saturation extract with varying degrees of treatment were also reduced after crops were grown. Available phosphorus content increased during growth. Due to the low nitrogen content in sludge, when nitrogen becomes the determining factor for the amount of sludge treatment, phosphorus buildup resulted from continued application of sludge could be raised. Therefore, it is advisable to use phosphorus, not nitrogen content, in determining the amount of sludge treatment and chemical fertilizer as supplementary sources for nitrogen.
Consecutive pepper cultivation in plastic film houses may lead to salt accumulation because pepper is considered a heavy nutrient feeder. For this reason, appropriate methods of fertilizer application should be established. Thus, we investigated the effect of different intervals of side-dressing N and K fertilizer applications on soil and red pepper in a plastic film house. All the amounts of recommended compost and phosphorus fertilizer were applied as basal dressing. Cultivars of the pepper plant were Cheon-Ha-Dae-Se (CHDS) and NW-BiGaLim (NW-BGL). Nitrogen and potassium fertilizers were treated as side-dressing at different intervals, 22 times in every 10 days, 15 times in every 15 days, and 11 times in every 20 days. Soil pH decreased with decreasing the intervals of side-dressing applications, whereas electrical conductivity (EC) declined with the increasing fertilizer application intervals. In particular, EC value decreased by up to 75% with CHDS cultivar in the plot of 20 day-interval and with NW-BGL cultivar in the plot of 15 day-interval. The concentrations of available phosphorus in the soils increased with increasing the interval. The concentration of exchangeable $K^+$ increased but exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ decreased in all the plots, except in the control plot. The concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in leaves of the pepper plants were lowest in the control plot. Potassium concentrations in the pepper leaves were high in the control plot and in the plots of CHDS with 10 day-interval and NW-BGL with 15 day-interval. Red pepper productivity was high in the plots of 10- and 15 day-intervals for CHDS cultivar and 15- and 20 day-intervals for NW-BGL cultivar. Therefore, the 15 day-interval of side-dressing N and K applications was considered as an appropriate method for cultivating pepper plants and protecting soil in plastic film houses.
This study examines the effect of submergence on phosphorus adsorption characteristics in Gangseo(paddy soil), Yesan(non-cultivated soil), and Jungdong soil(upland soil). The soils were submerged with glucose sol'n at $28^{\circ}C$ for 17 days. After the submergence, the phosphorus adsorption was conducted at three temperatures(5, 25 and $45^{\circ}C$). The phosphorus adsorption maximum($X_m$) and the equilibrium constant(K) were obtained by Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the heat of adsorption(${\Delta}H$) was calculated by van't Hoff's equiation. Results obtained are as follows ; 1. The amounts of adsorbed P were increased with temperature, but the effects of temperature on rate of P adsorption were very small in all three soils. 2. By submergence, $X_m$ were increased from 500mg P/kg to 850mg P/kg in Gangseo soil, from 1,850mg P/kg to 3,300mg P/kg in Yesan soil, and from 310mg P/kg to 670mg P/kg in Jungdong soil. But the effects of temperature on $X_m$ were very small in all three soils. 3. Submergence decreased K for Gangseo and Yesan soils, but increased for Jungdong soil. Whereas K were increased with temperature in all three soils. 4. By submergence, ${\Delta}H$ for Gangseo soil was greatly increased (from 2.2 Kcal/mole to 3.5 Kcal/mole), whereas that for Yesan soil changed little (from 5.7 Kcal/mole to 5.5 Kcal/mole). It was 4.4 Kcal/mole in submerged Jungdong soil.
Interactions of phosphorus and zinc in soils are important to determine the availability of the elements because those elements are closely related in the agricultural environment. The objective of this study was to investigate the interactions of P and Zn using desorption quantity (Q)-intensily(I) isotherms. Physically and chemically different soils, acidic Egan, acidic sandy Egeland, calcareous Glenham, and neutral Maddock, were used. The soils were enriched with different concentrations of P and Zn as $KH_2PO_4$ and $ZnSO_4$ solutions, respectively. Zinc enrichments affected availability of P in the Egan soil, which contained higher amounts of clay, organic matter, and exchangeable Fe than the other soils tested. After Zn enrichments, the pH drastically decreased in Egeland sandy soil, not changed in the calcarious Glenham soil, and slightly decreased in Egan and Maddock soil systems. The values of $Q_{max}$ and $I_0$ of phosphorus decreased with increasing Zn concentrations enriched in all soils, the changes of those values did not influence the P buffering power, |$BP_o$| values, in most soils. The influences of P treatment on Zn availability were varied. The values of Zn buffering capacity, $BC_{Zn}$, were lowest in the Egeland soil that had the lowest soil pH, amounts of clay minerals, organic matter, CEC, and exchangeable Fe, and were highest in the calcareous Glenham soil. The $BC_{Zn}$ values ranged from 202 to 4480. With P application, the changes of $BC_{Zn}$ values were more affected by the changes of soil solution Zn contents (I) than the changes of DTPA extractable Zn contents(Q). The change of Q and I values was found to be dependent upon soil properties, especially, soil pH.
Four diazinon-degrading bacteria were isolated from agricultural soil by using an enrichment technique. The biochemical analysis and molecular method including RFLP indicated that these isolates were identical, and one strain designated DI101 was selected for further study. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rDNA sequencing indicated that the strain DI101 clearly belongs to the Serratia marcescens group. The ability of the strain to utilize diazinon as a source of carbon and phosphorus was investigated under different culture conditions. The DI101 strain was able to completely degrade 50 mg/l diazinon in MSM within 11 days with a degradation rate of 0.226 $day^{-1}$. The inoculation of sterilized soil treated with 100 mg/kg of diazinon with $10^6$ CFU/g DI101 resulted in a faster degradation rate than was recorded in non-sterilized soil. The diazinon degradation rate by DI101 was efficient at temperatures from 25 to $30^{\circ}C$ and at pHs from 7.0 to 8.0. The degradation rate of diazinon was not affected by the absence of a phosphorus supplement, and addition of other carbon sources (glucose or succinate) resulted in the slowing down of the degradation rate. The maximum degradation rate ($V_{max}$) of diazinon was 0.292 $day^{-1}$ and its saturation constant ($K_s$) was 11 mg/l, as determined by a Michaelis-Menten curve. The strain was able to degrade diethylthiophosphate-containing organophosphates such as chlorpyrifos, coumaphos, parathion, and isazofos when provided as a source of carbon and phosphorus, but not ethoprophos, cadusafos, and fenamiphos. These results propose useful information for the potential application of the DI101 strain in bioremediation of pesticide-contaminated environments.
Even though phosphorus (P) is essential element for plant growth and development, it is not enough for crop production in soil. To breed more P deficient tolerance rice, screening and selection in rice population is needed. We tried to develop more simple and rough screening method for breeding of P deficient tolerance rice. In P deficient condition, tiller number was dramatically decreased among yield components in rice. Though this result, we confirmed tiller number could be the best marker in screening of P deficient tolerance rice. 480 rice genetic resources were cultivated in rice bed tray filled with P deficient soil for four weeks and each dry weight was measured. Among them, the 55 kinds of genetic resource were selected then cultivated in paddy field with 3 fertilizer conditions. Plant dry weight and tiller number in ripening stage were shown significant difference according to P condition. Plant dry weight and tiller number in ripening stage was highly correlated especially in P deficient condition. Furthermore, the tiller number in ripening stage and plant dry weight in rough screening were shown high degree correlation. Though these results, we might expect measuring of plant dry weight after cultivation in rice bed tray filled with P deficient soil could be a simple and effective screening method in selection of P deficient tolerance rice.
Organic matter in rice-paddy soils exercises two antagonistic effects on the rice plant under water-logged conditions in growing season in the course of its decomposition: It liberates mineral nutrients and promotes soil fertility. On the other hand, however, it demands oxygen for its decay and therefore competes with rice roots for this element, when applied in large quantity of fresh status. For the practical end of rice culture, it is most desirable that these two effects should not contend with each other. To determine the proper content of organic materials to be applied, the influences of varied amounts of a homogeneous mixture of dried green manure, ranging from 0 to 20g/pot (1/20,000 tanbo), upon hte growth of rice was investigated in a sand culture. Labeled phosphorus fertilizer was also used in the form of KH232PO4 to evaluate the availability of this nutrient in the soil. Under the present experimental conditions, green mature seems to have influenced little on the growth of rice, except on number of grains produced and grains/straw ratio. Moreover, no sympton of growth inhibition is obsrvable even by the largest amount of its application. The available phosphorus, as estimated by A-value, appears to have increased, as the amount of organic materials applied increases. In view of the fact that pure sand instead of a paddy soil is used in this culture, the present results would not be directly applicable to practical rice farming. Besides, the estimated A-value is in need of further study, since it varies according to method of application, as suggested by Nishigki et. al. (1958).
The purpose of this study is to improve the stream water quality by the experimental hybrid constructed wetland system. It consisted of the water layer, sand bed planted reeds, irises and roses, gravel bed, yellow-soil media bed and a flow shifter (FS) which can reverse top and bottom flow in the middle of the wetland. The organic compounds and nitrogen removal efficiencies varied with the seasons, namely temperature change. In summer, the mean efficiencies of COD and TN in the outflow from this wetland system were 63.4 and 48.0% and shown the highest, respectively, whereas, the suspended solids and phosphorus removal efficiencies seemed to be less affected by temperature. As a result of inspecting the decreasing trend of pollutants, nitrification-denitrification in the wetland was the major removal mechanism for nitrogen, the nitrogen reduction was especially enhanced by the application of a FS in the wetland, and phosphorus reduction was mainly occurred as a consequence of adsorption of the yellow-soil media.
Determination of the chemical properties in some forest soils and the naked soil developed on granite in the mountains of the vicinity of Seoul, Korea are presented in this study. The soil under the broad leaved forests has a higher nutrient indicated by available nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, and phosphorus contents, compared with that under the needle leved forests. On the contrary the content of organic matter and base exchange capacity in the needle forest soils is higher than in the broad leaved forest soils. The significant difference between two horizons of each soil appeared only to be in the content of the available phosphorus, and that of the needle and the broad leaved forest soils, and the naked soils was the nitrate nitrogen and organic matter content among the several chemical properties.

Organo-chlorinated pesticides have been seldom measured in Korea because their use was banned for more than two decades. Nevertheless, the environmental persistency of these pesticides requires regular monitoring. Only organo-phosphorus pesticides are currently being monitored in Korea. Simultaneous determination of organo-chlorinated and organo-phosphorus pesticides was attempted using gas chromatography/mass spectrometer detector. Pressurized fluid extraction(PFE) was used in sample preparation. PFE showed equivalent extraction efficiency to traditional soxhlet extraction with less solvent use and less sample preparation time. Average recovery of spiked pesticides to soil and lawn samples was 62% ranging 52 to 154%. Method detection levels(MDLs) for these pesticides ranged from 3.4 to 10.5 ${\mu}g/kg$. Endosulfan, fenitrothion, and diazinon were found in the samples from 5 different golf courses out of 9 courses.
