In order to gain a better understanding of how forests participate in the cycling of carbon, effects of nitrogen addition on soil respiration were investigated on the oak forest in Kongju, Korea. Study site was divided into control, treatment f and treatment 2 plots, with 5 replication in each plot. In each replicate of treatment 1 and treatment 2 were fertilized with ammonium nitrate (NH$_4$NO$_3$), 30 g/$m^2$ and 60 g/$m^2$, respectively. Soil respiration, soil temperature, ammonium-N and nitrate-N were measured during the experimental period. Ammonium-N and nitrate-N in Ta were higher than those in control and T$_1$. Ammonium-N and nitrate-N in top-soil and sub-soil decreased sharply in August after bi9 rainfall in July in T$_1$ and T$_2$, however, those in control plot increased. Soil respiration in T$_2$ Plot showed consistently higher than those in control and T$_1$ until the end of July. However, soil respiration was similar among the control, T$_1$ and T$_2$ in mid-August and September The amount of Co$_2$ released from soil respiration in control, T$_1$ and T$_2$ in mid-August was 8.0$\pm$0.4, 9.3$\pm$0.6 and 10.2$\pm$0.5 $\mu$mol$^{-1}$ ㆍm$^{-2}$ ㆍs$^{-1}$ , respectively. However, those in control, T$_1$ and T$_2$in mid-August was 13.0$\pm$0.4, 13.5$\pm$0.5, 13.3$\pm$0.6 $\mu$mol$^{-1}$ ㆍm$^{-2}$ ㆍ$^{-1}$ , respectively. The results suggest that nitrogen addition in this oak forest has a positive effect on soil respiration.
Micro plot study was conducted to elucidate the behavior of nitrogen derived from animal manure in soil and to obtain the fundamental information on animal waste management. Soils used in this experiment were sandy loam and loam. Soil water samplers (1m length ceramic cup tube) were installed at 90cm depth of soil to collect the percolate. Fresh and fermented pig manure were applied at the rate of 0, 50, 100 ton per ha. Maize was grown to evaluate the effect of crop on nitrogen behavior through soil profile. Concentration of nitrate nitrogen in percolate increased by application of pig manure. This trend was more obvious at the loam with fermented pig manure than sandy loam with fresh pig manure treatment. The concentration of nitrate nitrogen was lower under the maize cultivation than bare soil condition by 64.6-68.9%. Concentration of Ca, Mg and Na of soil and percolate increased as nitrate nitrogen concentration increased. The equivalent ratio of cation to nitrate nitrogen of percolate was increased by application of pig manure. This result showed that canon leaching was accompanied by nitrate nitrogen. Concentration of nitrate nitrogen of subsurface soil was increased by pig manure application.

Reduction of nitrate by zero valent iron (Fe$^{0}$ ) has been previously studied, but the proper treatment for the by-product of ammonium has not been reported. However, in terms of nitrogen contamination, ammonium may be regarded as another form of nitrogen contaminants since it can be oxidized to nitrate again under aerobic conditions. This study is focused on simultaneous removal of nitrate and its by-product of ammonium, with the ZanF (Zeolite anchored Fe), a product derived from zeolite modified by Fe(II) chloride followed by reduction with sodium borohydride. Batch experiments were performed without buffer at two different pH condition with ZanF, iron filing, Fe(II)-sorbed zeolite, and pure zeolite to estimate the nitrate reduction and the ammonium production. At higher pH, removal rate of nitrate was reduced in both ZanF and iron filings. ZnF removed 60 % of nitrate at initial pH of 3.3 with no production of ammonium, while iron filing showed equivalent production of ammonium to the reduced amount of nitrate. In terms of nitrogen contamination, ZanF removed about 60 % and 40 % at initial pH of 3.3 and 6, respectively, while iron filing presented negligible removal against total nitrogen including nitrate and ammonium.
This study was carried out to find out the distribution of soil components and their relationships in layer of soil profiles under upland condition. Concentrations of nitrate, chloride, and that sort of thing in soil profiles were tested in a field covering $235m^2$ by core sampling down to 150cm depth. Total nitrogen contents in soil profiles progressively decreased in lower depths down to 150cm. Nitrate concentrations in deeper layers than 110cm, which revealed a similar distribution pattern with total nitrogen down to 110cm, increased with the depth lowering to 150cm, indicationg that nitrate has leached to deep layer. Natural abundance of $^{15}N$ in total nitrogen and nitrate in all the soil profiles showed higher values compared with the other general cultivated soils and trended to get higher in deeper layers. The horizontal variation of $^{15}N$ distribution in the field surveyed was not significant. Chloride concentrations and EC values in soil profiles increased with depth where nitrate was accmulated, and showed a highly positive correlation between them.

In this study, the pump and fertilize (PAF) was applied to reduce nitrogen infiltration into groundwater at three corn cultivation sites over a three-year period, and its effectiveness was evaluated. PAF involves pumping nitrate-contaminated groundwater and using it for irrigation, thereby replacing the need for chemical fertilizers. This method not only substitutes chemical fertilization, but also reduces nitrogen infiltration into groundwater through root zone consumption. To confirm PAF's effectiveness, an equal amount of nitrogen was applied in each cultivation plot, either through chemical fertilizer or irrigation with nitrate-contaminated groundwater. Regular monitoring of infiltrating pore water and groundwater was conducted in each cultivation plot. The linear regression slope for nitrate concentration in the pore water after repeated application of PAF ranged from -3.527 to -8.3485 mg-N/L/yr, confirming that PAF can reduce nitrate concentration in the pore water. With an increasing proportion of PAF, the infiltrating nitrate mass in pore water was reduced by 42% compared to plots fertilized with chemical fertilizer. Additionally, the linear regression slope of nitrate concentration in groundwater was calculated as -2.2999 and -9.2456 mg-N/L/yr. Therefore, continuous application of PAF in rural areas is expected to significantly contribute to reducing nitrate concentration in groundwater.
This study was conducted to estimate the effect of nitrogen reduction by applying ryegrass and to determine the relationship between yield and nitrate concentration of soil solution for cucumber cultivation in plastic film house. Nitrogen levels with recovery of ryegrass ($42.3Mg\;ha^{-1}$) was 0, 50, 75, 100 % of 199 kg N $ha^{-1}$ as N recommendation by determining soil EC value. Yield and nitrate concentration in soil solution was investigated during cucumber cultivation. Yields of N treatments applied ryegrass showed 64.3, 70.9, 70.3, and $76.5Mg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively, it could reduce about 25-50% of nitrogen application compared to yield ($68Mg\;ha^{-1}$) of NPK plot applied 199 kg N $ha^{-1}$. Nitrate concentration in soil solution was average 26.0, 30.1, 41.4, $58.5mg\;L^{-1}$ during cucumber cultivation and was related between yield and average nitrate concentration of soil solution following as; $Y=49.3+0.63X+0.0034X^2$ ($R^2=0.778^{**}$). However, it needs to conduct extra-experiment due to high variation of nitrate concentration during cultivation periods.
This study was performed to evaluate the growth and nodulation characters of hypernodulating soy-bean mutant, SS2-2, and to know the growth and yield performance of the mutant in infertile soil. Soil fertility was adjusted by mixing the different ratios of soil components including clay, river sand, and horticultural bed, which resulted in fertile and infertile soil. Dry weight, nitrogen concentration, and leaf nitrate reductase of each plant were measured around V6 stage (47 days after planting) and around R3 stage (82 days after planting). There were significant effects of soil fertility and soybean genotype on the total dry weights including root, nodule, stem, leaf, and pod dry weight at V6 and R3 stages. Total dry weight of hypernodulating mutant, SS2-2, was clearly less than that of its wild type, Sinpaldalkong 2. However, nodule development on the roots of SS2-2 was much greater than that of Sinpaldalkong 2, regardless of soil fertility. Though SS2-2 was smaller in plant size than Sinpaldalkong 2, genotypic difference in total nitrogen content was not significant at both V6 and R3 stages because SS2-2 fixed more nitrogen biologically than its wild type in the root nodule. The SS2-2 mutant showed lower plant yield in both infertile and fertile soil. The SS2-2 contained more crude seed protein than Sinpaldalkong 2, and was characterized with reduced top and root growth.

The purposes of this research are to identify the source and to analyze the pathway of nitrate contamination in "cultural village", Jeungpyeong. In order to examine recharge processes and flow pattern that closely related to the influent of nitrate contaminant, the flow field was simulated and the oxygen and hydrogen stable isotopes were analyzed. The nitrogen isotope was used to delineate contaminant sources. The shallow groundwater was mainly composed of precipitation, but leakage of domestic water and sewage contributed to the recharge. Nitrate contaminants were possibly from the leakage of sewage and animal waste. The nitrate concentration decreased due to dilution by low concentration water.ion water.
This study was conducted to recommend nitrogen (N) top dressing based on soil nitrate content for leaf perilla under forcing culture in Gumsan-gun and Milyang-si. Experimental design was the randomized complete block design for five N fertilization levels and conventional fertilization. Dry weight, nitrogen uptake, and the node number of leaf perilla were measured and soil nitrate contents were analyzed monthly. The amount of nitrogen uptake for growth of a node with two leaves was $2.2kg\;10a^{-1}$ for Gumsan site and $3.5kg\;10a^{-1}$ for Milyang site. Lower level of soil nitrate N concentration for standard N fertilization was determined as $10mg\;kg^{-1}$ for both sites. Soil depth, bulk density, utilization rate of soil nitrate N, and the amount of N uptake for growth of a node with two leaves were considered for calculation of upper level of soil nitrate N concentration. The upper levels of soil nitrate N concentration for no N fertilization were determined as $30mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Gumsan site and as $40mg\;kg^{-1}$ for Milyang site. Consequently the recommendation equations for the N top dressing were Y=-0.157X+4.71 for Gumsan site and Y=-0.1667X+6.6667 for Milyang site.

This study applied a hydrogeological field survey and isotope investigation to identify source locations and delineate pathways of groundwater contamination by nitrogen compounds. The infiltration and recharge processes were analyzed with groundwater-level fluctuation data and oxygen-hydrogen stable isotope data. The groundwater flow pattern was investigated through groundwater flow modeling and spatial and temporal variation of oxygen isotope data. Based on the flow analysis and nitrogen isotope data, source types of nitrate contamination in groundwater are identified. Groundwater recharge largely occurs in spring and summer due to precipitation or irrigation water in rice fields. Based on oxygen isotope data and cross-correlation between precipitation and groundwater level changes, groundwater recharge was found to be mainly caused by irrigation in spring and by precipitation at other times. The groundwater flow velocity calculated by a time series of spatial correlations, 231 m/yr, is in good accordance with the linear velocity estimated from hydrogeologic data. Nitrate contamination sources are natural and fertilized soils as non-point sources, and septic and animal wastes as point sources. Seasonal loading and spatial distribution of nitrate sources are estimated by using oxygen and nitrogen isotopic data.
