In this paper, a numerical comparison of predictions by limit equilibrium analysis and finite difference analysis is presented for slope/soil-nail system. Special attention is given to the coupled analysis based on the explicit-finite-difference code, FLAC 2D. To this end, an internal routine (FISH) was developed to calculate a factor of safety for a soil nail slope according to shear strength reduction method. The case of coupled analyses was performed for soil nails in slope in which the soil nails response and slope stability are considered simultaneously. In this study, by using these methods, the failure surfaces and factors of safety were compared and analyzed in several cases, such as toe, middle and top of the slope, respectively. Furthermore, the coupled method based on shear strength reduction method was verified by the comparison with other analysis results.
This paper proposes a stabilizing method against landslide using slide suppressor wall reinforced with soil nails. Included are a procedure to predict earth pressures acting on the concrete panel and a method of analysis of stabilizing pile. Based on the proposed procedure, the efficient installation type and inclusion angle of nails are analyzed. Also, optimum location of the slide suppressor wall composed of concrete panel and stabilizing pile is analyzed. Finally the comparison with a method proposed by Wright is made, and the effect of interactions between stabilizing piles is examined, throughout the design example.

Soil nailing is a method of reinforcing natural deposits of soil with passive inclusions, called nails, of steel or other materials. Its purpose is mainly to increase the tensile and shear strength of the soil mass. This method has been widely used during the last two decades to stabilize steep slopes in several countries (France, Germany, USA, Japan, etc.). The design methods that have been mostly used are Davis method, German method, and French method which are based on limit equilibrium approaches, and Juran method which utilizes the kinematical limit equilibrium design concept. This paper is focussed on the evaluation of the available design methods(especially, the France, Davis and German design methods) through comparison with each different assumption for the failure surface, the concept of failure mechanism and the definition of safety factor. The parametric study to identify the effects of design parameters on the overall factor of safety has also been conducted. By considering the results along with the associated assumptions which have been postulated in the several methods, the applicability of the method for a given soil and nail conditions has been evaluated.

Soil nailing is in-situ ground improvement technique of reinforcing soils using passive inclusions for the purpose of slope stability. Also soil nailing, in general, was used and studied as a reinforcement technique at cut slope, but this paper presents the results of study for soil nailing application as a reinforcement technique at the banking over slided slope. In-situ pull-out tests of nails, instrumented with strain gauges, were performed to investigate the maximum pull-out load and to calculate the unit side resistance in each different layer. And the apparent average unit side resistance of this study was compared with that of other sites installed at cut slope.

Current design and analyzing methods about soil nailing structures, developed on the basis of results obtained from experiments in laboratory or in field and numerical analyses, have applied different interaction mechanisms between the reinforced nails and the surrounding ground, and different safety factors against failure have been obtained. They might be proper approaches if the assumptions about rigidity of nails and ground conditions are met with actual conditions occurred in field. Otherwise, they would result in designing on analyzing in inappropriate ways so that it is needed to evaluate the validity of them. Therefore, in this research using the Centrifugal Model Testing, numerical parameters experiments about soil nailing structures' behavior and failure mechanism were performed. In the numerical parameters experiments, transmuted nail's length, setting angle, nail's front panel, stiffness variously, and increased the level of gravity until wall model was destroyed. Based on experimental results, we compared the effect, failure mechanism caused from parameters changes. By reviewing and comparing centrifugal model test results and methods currently in use, verified validity of existing methods.

In general the stability of soil nail-slope system, the shear resistance is neglected because the tensile resistance of nail acts mainly for slope stabilization. This is because that deformed steel is generally used for nail and it does ductile behavior. In other side when the steel pipe with high rigidity is used for nail, the shear resistance at failure surface work more than deformed steel. In order to analyze effects of shear resistance at the soil nail-slope system with high steel piped nail, a series of numerical analyses were performed. Also numerical analyses at 3 conditions - 5 nailed, 7 nailed, 9 nailed at the same slope were perfomed for investigating the trend of shear resistance effect. From these 3D numerical analyses, it was found that the maximum shear resistances at each nails were larger in case of steel piped nail and because of this, the factor of safety at the condition of the steel piped nail appears larger than that of deformed steel nail.

The soil nailing system at permanent slope reinforcement is used with various facing methods in Korea. Also, pressure-injected grout technique is variously applied to many structures. However, most design of the pressure-injected grout technique have been carried out empirically because of complicated mechanisms associated with the behavior of surrounding soils and the hardening process of cement grout. Therefore this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PGSN (Pressure Grouting Soil Nailing) system with fabric form is developed to increase the global stability. Up to now, the PGSN system has been estimated mainly focusing on an establishment of the design procedure. In the present study, numerical study are carried out to evaluate potential failure surface and minimum factor of safety including facing stiffness and expanded radius of cemented grout by SSR (Shear Strength Reduction) technique. Also, results of numerical analysis are carried out for the typical section of soil nails slope using $FLAC^{2D}$ program for expanded effective radius by pressure grouting.
This research is an experimental work of investigating the behavior of soil nailing system under surcharges whereas most of them were concentrated on evaluating its capacity under selfweight of excavated ground. Model tests in laboratory were performed to investigate the ultimate bearing capacity of soil nailing system under surcharges in forms of strip loading. Tests were carried out to find parameters controlling its capacity such as length of nail, vertical and horizontal spacings between nails, inclination of nail installation, and loading position of surcharges. Failure mechanism of forming failure line due to surcharge to soil nailing system was also observed by using dyed sand and monitoring its behavior. From results of these test, effects of parameters was analyzed qualitatively. Thus, this experimental results could provide meaningful data to analyze and design this system later.
Korea follows the slope design criteria during construction. It was enacted by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. There are cases where the Soil-nail is designed as a measure to secure slope stability. The arrangement of the soil-nail may be arranged at equal intervals or may be arranged differently depending on the soil failure model. The optimum design of the countermeasure method is determined by securing stability of the slope through optimization of dimensions and shape. However, when uniform nails are placed at low elevations in slopes, the standard safety factor is exceeded, which may hinder economic design. It is preferable to arrange the reinforcement of the nails over the entire slope. When the horizontal spacing of the nails was topology optimized according to the slope height, it was possible to minimize the amount of reinforcement while satisfying the standard safety factor. Since the active load is reduced in the section where the slope height is lowered, the safety factor after reinforcement may be excessively increased. Therefore, the phase optimization method is proposed as an economical optimal design method using the reinforcing shape density. In addition, a relational expression was designed to optimize the horizontal spacing by slope height.

In Korea, there are recently many attempts to expand a temporary soil nailing system into a permanent soil nailing system since the first construction in 1993. In the downtown area, it is important that the relaxation of the ground is minimized in the ground excavation works. Due to these problems, soil nailing systems are often used the flexible facing such as shotcrete rather than the rigid facing such as SCW, CIP, and jet grout types in Korea. The soil nailing systems with rigid facings are used greatly however it is insufficient researches for design and analysis of soil nailing systems with rigid facings. In this study, various laboratory model tests are carried out to examining the influence the rigidity of facings on the global safety of soil nailing system, failure loads, displacement behaviour, axial force acting on the nails, and distribution of earth pressure. Also, the parametric studies are carried out for the typical section of soil nailed walls according to thickness of concrete facings and internal friction angle of soil using the numerical technique as shear strength reduction technique.
