The objective of this paper is to show that the soil-geotextile interaction needs to he addressed in addition to the usual tensile and modulus properties when the geotextile is being designed for a specific application. The soil-geotextile interaction can be directly assessed by standard direct shear test. The data presented here show that the shear strength paramaters describing the soil-geotextile interface can he greatly influenced by the type of the geotextile. In this investigation, we examined nine different geotextiles of varying construction and surface textures with two standard soil, under five loading conditions, and compared the shear strength and the frictional resistance with the corresponding values of soil itself The following conclusions were drawned from this study. 1. The shear stress-strain curve shows that there are the residual shear stresses at the soil-geotextile interface. Because of the hydraulic gradient between the soil and the geotextile, the excessive pore water can migrate into the geotextile and among the filaments and dissipate through the soil-geotextile interface. 2. The shear strength of the soil-geotextile interface is affected by the moisture content of the soil. At moisture content lower than the optimum water content of the Proctor compaction test, the shear strength of the soil-geotextile interface is greater. 3. The type and surface roughness of the geotextile have the greatest influence on the interface friction angle between the soil and the geotextile.

This study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of volume change is unsaturated clayed soil. The medium-plastic clay was selected and compacted by 50% of Proctor standard compaction energy at 6% higher moisture content than its OMC. A series of isotropic compression tests and triaxial shear tests were performed. The results of the study are summarized as follows. At each matric suction, when the matric suction was increased, the yield stress was increased and slope of volume change was decreased. The more net mean stress was, the less the quantity of volume change was. In shear test, the volumetric strain was much rapidly changed in large matric than in low matric suctions. But the effect of matric suction to volume change disappeared under high net mean stress. At lower deviator stress the more matric suction was, the higher volume change was. But As the matric suction was increasing, the behavior of the unsaturated clayey soil was similar to that of saturated clayey soil. Volume change in the unsaturated clayey soil can be represented as a unique plane in three-dimensional space, which is the axes of net mean stress, matric suction and void ratio.
The application of satellite imageries has increased in the field of hydrology and water resources in recent years. However, challenges have been encountered on obtaining accurate evapotranspiration and soil moisture. Therefore, present researches have emphasized the necessity to obtain estimations of satellite-based evapotranspiration and soil moisture with related development researches. In this study, we presented the research status in Korea by investigating the current trends and methodologies for evapotranspiration and soil moisture. As a result of examining the detailed methodologies, we have ascertained that, in general, evapotranspiration is estimated using Energy balance models, such as Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land (SEBAL) and Mapping Evapotranspiration with Internalized Calibration (METRIC). In addition, Penman-Monteith and Priestley-Taylor equations are also used to estimate evapotranspiration. In the case of soil moisture, in general, active (AMSR-E, AMSR2, MIRAS, and SMAP) and passive (ASCAT and SAR)sensors are used for estimation. In terms of statistics, deep learning, as well as linear regression equations and artificial neural networks, are used for estimating these parameters. There were a number of research cases in which various indices were calculated using satellite-based data and applied to the characterization of drought. In some cases, hydrological cycle factors of evapotranspiration and soil moisture were calculated based on the Land Surface Model (LSM). Through this process, by comparing, reviewing, and presenting major detailed methodologies, we intend to use these references in related research, and lay the foundation for the advancement of researches on the calculation of satellite-based hydrological cycle data in the future.

A flash drought is a rapid-onset drought that develops over a short period of time as weather and environmental factors change rapidly, unlike general droughts, due to meteorological abnormalities. Abnormally high evapotranspiration rates and rapid declines in soil moisture increase vegetation stress. In addition, crop yields may decrease due to flash droughts during crop growth and may damage agricultural and economic ecosystems. In this study, Flash Drought Intensity Index (FDII) based on soil moisture data from Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment (GRACE) was used to analyze flash drought. FDII, which is calculated using soil moisture percentile, is expressed by multiplying two factors: the rate of intensification and the drought severity. FDII was developed for domestic flash drought events from 2014 to 2018. The flash drought that occurred in 2018, Chungcheongbuk-do showed the highest FDII. FDII was higher in heat wave flash drought than in precipitation deficit flash drought. The results of this study show that FDII is reliable flash drought analysis tool and can be applied to quantitatively analyze the characteristics of flash drought in South Korea.

To get a better understanding of the effect of drying-wetting cycles (DWC) on the mechanical behaviors of silty clay hiving different initial moisture content (IMC), the direct shear tests were performed on sliding band soil taken from a reservoirinduced landslide at the Three Gorges Reservoir area. The results indicated that, as the increasing number of DWC, the shear stress-displacement curves type changed from strain-hardening to strain-softening, and both the soil peak strengths and strength parameters reduced first and then nearly remain unchanged after a certain number of DWC. The effects of DWC on the cohesion were predominated that on the internal friction angle. The IMC of 17% is regarding as the critical moisture content, and the evolution laws of both peak shear strength and strength parameters presented a reversed 'U' type with the rising of the IMC. Based on it, a strength deterioration evolution model incorporating the influence of IMC and DWC was developed to describe the total degradation degree and degradation rate of strength parameters, and the degradation of strength parameters caused by DWC could be counterbalanced to some extent as the soil IMC close to critical moisture content. The microscopic mechanism for the soil strength caused by the IMC and DWC were discussed separately. The research results are of great significance for further understanding the water-weakening mechanicals of the silty clay subjected to the water absorption/desorption.

This study is conducted to analyze effects of soil moisture on the growth of maple(Acer palmatum) under indoor low light intensity. Maples grew under three different light intensities such as sunny place(average 353.2W/$m^2$), half shade(average 7.7 W/$m^2$) and shade/(average 1.9W/$m^2$).Under half shady and shady condition, each 24 planters(2 maples planted in each planter) were used and divided into 3 groups treated with different watering points. Three levels of soil water potential were set for watering points, such as -200mbar, -300mbar or -500mbar. Under sunny condition, there were only group of 8 planters, as comparison. Watering was applied when soil water potentials reached -500maber. The results of plant growth experiment are as followed. 1. Under the shady condition, 32 maples died among 48 maples for 7 months. 9 maples survived, watered at soil water potential -200mbar, 5maples at -300mbar and 2maples at -500mbar. 2. Leaf water content ratios were higher under lower light intensity. For the cell wall became thinner under lower light intensity. 3. Maples in shady were easy to die due to having thin cell wall, therefore they were easy to loss the turgor pressure. 4. In case of half shady condition, the group, watered at soil water potential -200mbar, had much smaller amount of rootlet than -300mbar, because there were excessive soil water. The group, watered at soil water potential -500mbar, had smaller amount of rootlet than -300mbar and there was a remarkable difference in leaf water potential in spite of nearly same soil water potential, because leaves received the water stress under lower soil water potential. 5. When maples grew soundly, the leaf water potential was largely influenced by the soil water potential.
The object of this study was to determine the difference of the time course changes of transpiration, diffusion resistance and photosynthetic rate of rice at several different growth stages subjected to soil moisture stress (SMS) and recovery by irrigation. A japonica rice cultivar 'Dongjinbyeo', was grown under flooded condition in a plastic container filled with silty loam soil. At 5 main growth stages, the container was treated by SMS until initial wilting point (IWP) and then reirrigated. The duration of SMS until IWP were the longest, 13 days for tillering stage, and the shortest, 7 days for panicle initiation and meiosis stage. The transpiration rate rapidly decreased during SMS and the transpiration rate at IWP of the stressed plant showed 10∼20% compared with control, and the transpiration rate of stressed plant at most growth stages also recovered rapidly after irrigation and then reached 100% of control within a week. The shoot photosynthetic rate in all growth stages rapidly decreased by SMS, and the rates at IWP of stressed plants were de-creased nearly to 0%, beside the treatment at tillering stage. The recovery degree of photosynthetic rate by irrigation ranged from 20 to 90%, showed higher at early growth stages of SMS treatment than that of later stages. At all growth stages the leaf diffusion resistance of stressed plants was over 3 times that of the control resulting from a rapid increase at 3 to 5 days after draining for SMS, and showed quick recovery by irrigation within 3 days after drainage. The above physiological parameters changed in close relation with the decrease of the soil matric potential after SMS. These results indicate that at all main growth stages of rice plants the transpiration and photosynthesis reduction by stomatal closure reponded sensitively to the first stage of SMS closely related with decrease of soil water potential, while those recovery pattern and recovered degree by irrigation are little different by growth stage of rice.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of chemical application and amout of soil moisture on low temperature stress of cucumber seedling under the greenhouse conditions. When chilling treatments ($2^{\circ}C$) were begun at 07:00AM, survival rates of seedlings of two conditions; -0.3 bar and -5.5 bar were 28.3% and 83.3% respectively. But when chilling treatments were begun at 6:00PM - even the soil moisture condition was -0.3 bar - the survival rate was above the 87%. When reducing the soil moisture from -0.3 bar to -9.0 bar, ABA content in leaf was inc.eased by 6.5fo1d. Spraying of abscisc acid (ABA) before or after the chilling significantly increased the survival rates of seedlings, decreased the amounts of leaking electrolytes and prevented the yield reductions. ABA application on the soil before the chilling appeared to be more effective than the application after the chilling with foliar spray. Spraying of ABA ($10^{-5}M$), urea (0.2%) or $KH_2PO_4$ was effective in counteracting the low temperature, which causes growth deterioration and yield reduction in cucumbers.

Abiotic stress is one of the major serious limiting factors in rice (Oryza sativa) and caused rice production losses. It is important to precisely screen valuable genetic resources for improving stress tolerance and understanding tolerance mechanism to abiotic stresses. Because there are differences of experiment designs for screening of tolerant plant in several studies related to abiotic stress, this study has performed to provide the rapid and efficiency screening method for selection of tolerance rice to drought and salinity stresses. Two week-old rice seedlings that reached about three leaf stage were treated with drought and salinity stresses and examined tolerant levels with tolerant and susceptible control varieties, and transgenic plants. To determine the optimum concentration for the selection of drought and salinity condition, tolerant, susceptible and wild-type plants were grown under three soil moisture contents (5, 10 and 20% water contents) and three NaCl concentrations (100, 200 and 250 mM) for 10 days at seedling stage. 200 mM NaCl concentration and 5% moisture content soil were determined as the optimum conditions, respectively. The described methodologies in this study are simple and efficiency and might help the selection of drought and salinity tolerance plants at the 3,4-leaf-seedling stage.
In order to identify the stress distribution on the furrow slice a small soil bin instrumented with soil stress meters was designed and constructed. From a series of experiments conducted in the soil bin the following results were obtained. 1) Neither the cutting conditions nor the soil conditions affected the direction of the principal stress. 2) The magnitude of the principal stress increased as the tillage depth increased. However, no effects due to lift angles were shown on the magnitude of the principal stresses. 3) The maximum principal stress increased with increase of the moisture and clay contents in the soil. 4) In the clay soil, the maximum principal stresses were distributed uniformly over the tillage depth. However, as the sand content increased, the maximum principal stresses decreased gradually on the top layer so that the distribution over the tillage depth became a trapezoidal shape.
