Spectral characteristics depending on soil constituents and their proportion in a soil were firstly studied for monitoring of soil contamination using hyperspectral remote sensing. The reflectance spectra of heavy metals in soils were investigated in the VIS-NIR-SWIR regions (400-2500 nm) to observe spectral variation as a function of constituents and concentrations. Commercial kaolinite soils mixed with lead, copper, arsenic, and cadmium were used as synthetic soil samples for spectral measurement. In case of copper, relatively spectrally active regions was observed with some band shift whereas other heavy metals had only simple spectral variations expected to be related to the sorption phase and the amount of metal onto kaolinite. The reflectance spectrum of each metal on kaolinite could be identified in VIS-NIR region.

Soil-cement mixtures involve problems in it's durability in grain size distribution and mineral composition of the used soils as well as in cement content, compaction energy, molding water content, and curing. As an attempt to solve the problems associated with durability of weathered granite soil with cement treated was investigated by conducting tests such as unconfined compression test, it's moisture, immers, wet-dry and freeze-thaw curing, mesurement of loss of weight with wet-dry and freeze-thaw by KS F criteria and CBR test with moisture curing on the five soil samples different in weathering and mineral composition. The experimental results are summarized as follows; The unconfined compressive strength was higher in moisture curing rather than in the immers and wet-dry, while it was lowest in freeze-thaw. Decreasing ratio of unconfined compressive strength in soil-cement mixtures were lowest in optimum moisture content or in the dry side rather than optimum moisture content with freeze-thaw. The highly significant ceofficient was obtained between the cement content and loss of weight with freeze-thaw and wet-dry. It was possible to obtain the durability of soil-cement mixtures, as the materials of base for roads, containing above 4 % of cement content, above 3Okg/cm$_2$ of unconfined compressive trength with seven days moisture curing or 12 cycle of freeze-thaw after it, above 100% of relative unconfined compressive strength, 80% of index of resistance, below 14% of loss of weight with 12 cycle of wet-dry and above 1. 80g/cm$_2$ of dry density.
In order to investigate soil-gas $^{222}Rn$ concentrations, Kwanak Campus (Seoul National University), Boeun (Choong-buk) and Gapyung (Kyonggi) areas were selected and classified depending on their base rock types. Radon risk indices of these study areas decrease in the order of Gapyung>Kwanak Campus>Boeun areas, and in the order of rock type as banded gneiss>granite gneiss>granite>black slate-shale>mica schist>shale-lirnestone>phyllite-schist. Radon emanating trends with water content and grain size of soils were assessed by modified Morse 3 min. method. Radon emanation increases with the increase of water content in soils which is lower than 6~16 wt.%, and decreases in the range of higher than 6-16 wt. %. It shows that Rn emanation increases with the decrease of soil grain size. Radioactivity analysis of radionuclides of 238U series in some soil samples shows that radioactive disequilibrium state between $^{226}Ra$ and $^{238}U$ exists owing to different geochemical behavior of each radionuclide, and, it is necessary to carry out radioactive isotope geochemical approach for soil-gas $^{222}Rn$ study.
Dewatered sludge of 400,000t/y from water treatment plants in Korea is being disposed through landfill and ocean dumping. However, the disposal is posing more and more serious environmental problems at the same time not only because of landfill site shortage in municipal suburbs, but because of the concern it will contaminate the oceans. In this study, the research on utilizing the sludge dried by flash dryer as covering soil in the landfill sites was carried out to solve these problems on environmental affinity. Both dewatered and dried sludge were exposed to the natural condition and observed according to the atmospheric changes. An experiment of soil engineering characteristics of the dried sludge and tests on mixed sludge(silty sandy soil : dried sludge = 10:90 ~ 30:70) such as particle size distribution, liquid and plastic limit, moisture content, specific gravity and compaction test were carried out. According to the compaction test, the compaction was confirmed as the optimum water content ratio was observed in the condition of SM-silty sand of particle size distribution, NP of liquid and plastic limit, 101.4% of moisture content, 2.04~2.12 of specific gravity. The results showed that dried sludges mixed with at least 30% of natural soil could be used as daily covering soil in the landfill sites.
To investigate the effects of simulated acid rain(SAR) on the downward movement of mineral nutrients, SARs of different pH were applied to the soil. SAR of pH 2.0 decreased the soil pH greatly, while SAR of pH 4.0 and 6.0 did not change the soil pH to compare to that of SAR of pH 2.0. Decrease in soil pH was in the order of sandy loam > loam > clay loam. The amoumt of leached exchangeable and soluble bases from the soil due to the penetration of SAR was in the order of Ca >Mg > K. After application of 1200mm SAR of pH 2.0 in to the soil downward mean movements of the exchangeable and soluble bases was in the order of Mg > Ca > K in sandy loam and loam soil and Ca > Mg > K in clay loam soil. Downward movements of the those bases under pH 4.0 into the soil was in the order of Mg > K > Ca in sandy loam and clay loam, and K > Mg > Ca in loam soil. Available phosphorus moved slightly downward with increasing acidity of the SAR.

The purpose of the study was to analyze the feasibility of the alluvial deposit deposited on upper terrace in Han River as a substitute for conventional plant soil. For this purpose, the soil characteristics were analyzed, and germination and growth rate of pansy and marigold for 75 days were investigated. Soil contamination level of all the samples, except mineral oil, was analysed under the legal contamination level, while some mineral oil was detected in almost samples at 2.0~32mg/kg. The measures of the soil texture (sandy loam or loam), organic matter (2.5~5.5%), available phosphate (22~98mg/kg), exchangeable cation of K (0.5~1.1cmol/kg), Ca (0.9~9.6cmol/kg), Mg (0.1~0.7cmol/kg), Na (0.7~3.1cmol/kg), CEC (3.1~24.3cmol/kg) were identified as not worse than those of conventional planting soil. But the pH (5.1~5.3) was detected slightly lower than the range (5.5~6.9) of average domestic field soil. The germination rate of pansy in alluvial deposit was lower than that of fertile field or paddy field soil, while the growth rate of pansy for 75 days in alluvial deposit was as good as that of the compared fertile soils. But the germination rate and growth rate of marigold in alluvial deposit were much poorer than those of marigold in compared fertile soils. Consequently, the feasibility of alluvial deposit as a substitute for planting soil was evaluated to be high.
In order to grasp the geological characteristics, the occurrence mode of ore body and development potential of Bophi Vum chromite mineralized zone in northwestern Myanmar, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources(KIGAM) and Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration(DGSE) carried out joint exploration targeting on the $6km^2$ areas within the mineralized zone. Chromitites occur as a major Cr-ore body in the Bophi Vum area, and are enveloped by dunitic peridotites. As a result of geological survey, the geological map of Bophi Vum was drawn in the scale of 1:1,000, and we discovered that the chromitite ores are mainly distributed at the elevation range between 200 and 400 m. The soil geochemistry was conducted by collecting total 114 soil samples in the interval of 50 m after pitting ground surface under 0.7-1 m. Geochemical anomaly maps of Cr, Ni, Fe, and Mn were prepared by ICP-AES.
Characteristics of natural radioactivity were investigated for soils collected from seven sites of different bed rocks distributed in the Keum River area of Korea by the use of a Gamma-ray spectrometry. Specific activity (SA) and SA ratio (SAR) of typical naturally occurring radioactive nuclide such as $^{226}$Ra, $^{228}$Ac and $^{40}$K were determined for the soil samples. The SA values of $^{226}$Ra, $^{228}$Ac and $^{40}$K in 41 soils of 7 sites are 26.7-485 (74.2 ${\pm}$ 72.2), 30.9-157 (90.7 ${\pm}$ 32.7) and 203-1558 (990 ${\pm}$ 203) Bq/kg, respectively. The SA of $^{226}$Ra has very different values by the soils and the sites. Especially the SA of $^{226}$Ra in a soil sample of Ogcheon site is 485 Bq/kg while most SA of 41 soil samples are < 100 Bq/kg. SA of $^{228}$Ac has a little different values with the soils and sites, however the SA of $^{40}$K has almost constant values in all soil samples. The SAR values of $^{26}$Ra/$^{228}$Ac, $^{226}$Ra/$^{40}$K and $^{228}$Ac/$^{40}$K in 41 soils of 7 sites are 0.343-6.11 (0.865 ${\pm}$ 0.883), 0.0258-0.759 (0.0814 ${\pm}$ 0.1l17) and 0.0373-0.178 (0.0945 ${\pm}$ 0.0373), respectively. The SARs of $^{226}$Ra/$^{228}$Ac and $^{226}$Ra/$^{40}$K have very different values by the soils and the sites, however the SAR of $^{228}$Ac/$^{40}$K has a little difference by the soil and sites.

A dynamic compartment model is presented to predict the contamination level of agricultural plant by $^{137}C_s$ as a result of a soil deposition. The model considered the processes of a percolation, soil mixing by a plowing before transplanting, plant uptake, leaching to a deep soil, and fixation to a clay mineral. The effects of the soil properties (pH, clay mineral, organic matter content, and exchangeable K), which are spatially varied, on a plant uptake and the leaching rates of $^{137}C_s$ in a root zone soil were modeled by the Absalom model. To test the validity of the model, the $^{137}C_s$ aggregated transfer factors(TFa) for rice plants were compared with those observed from some simulated $^{137}C_s$ soil deposition experiments, which were carried out with respect to rice plants cultivated in seventeen paddy soils of different properties for two consecutive years. Observed $^{137}C_s$ TFa values of the rice plants did not show an evident trend for the pH and clay content of the soil properties, while they increased with an increasing organic matter content or a decreasing exchangeable K concentration. Predicted $^{137}C_s$ TFa values of the rice plants were found to be comparable with those observed.
Fresh hairy vetch (HV) as a green manure equivalent to $240kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ were incorporated into soil at corn planting in 1997 and 1998 to clarify the effects on changes of nitrogen (N) content in soil and corn plant. The influences of HV for the N of soil and plant were compared with those of ammonium nitrate (AN) in terms of mineralization and microbial biomass. During early decomposition of HV residue, the content of $NO_3-N$ in HV plot was as much as 60-70% of that in AN plot in surface soil of 0-15 cm depth. In addition, soil microbial biomass N (SMBN) by HV residue was increased up to $10-20mg\;kg^{-1}$ more than that by AN. Some mineral N from HV seemed to be released slowly until late corn growth stage judging from high content of $NO_3-N$ in both corn stem at silking stage and soil at harvest. There were no difference of N accumulations in corn plant at silking stage between HV and AN plots in both 1997 and 1998. At harvesting stage, a total of plant N accumulation in HV plot in 1997 was 8% less than that in AN plot while in 1998 it was 19% more. It was concluded that fresh HV green manure equivalent to $240kg\;N\;ha^{-1}$ was good enough to substitute the same amount with chemical N fertilizer by slow releasing of mineral N from HV residue in soil.
