  • The soil erosion processes have estimated using spatial distribution of 137Cs radionuclide in Granite and Sedimentary Hillslopes in South Korea. The local variability of 137Cs inventory indicates that was related positively to organic matter content, clay content and water content and negatively to hydraulic permeability and slope gradient for bulk samples in different landforms within Granite and Sedimentary rock basins. The vertical variability of 137Cs inventory shows that most of 137Cs concentration and organic matter were accumulated between 0 and 2cms and gradually decrease with soil depth in incremental samples in both basins. The vertical variability of 137Cs inventories shows that 137Csinventories increase as we go to toward downslope in both basins. Finally, the soil loss values indicate that hillslope erosion processes are more intensive in Granite rock basin than those in Sedimentary rock basin.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate soil loss amount according to the rainfall-runoff erosivity factor frequency and to analyze the hazard zone that has high possibilities of soil erosion in the watershed. RUSLE was used to analyze soil loss quantity. The study area is Gwanchon that is part of Seomjin river basin. To obtain the frequency rainfall-runoff erosivity factor, the daily maximum rainfall data for 39 years was used. The probability rainfall was calculated by using the Normal distribution, Log-normal distribution, Pearson type III distribution, Log-Pearson type III distribution and Extreme-I distribution. Log-Pearson type III was considered to be the most accurate of all, and used to estimate 24 hours probabilistic rainfall, and the rainfall-runoff erosivity factor by frequency was estimated by adapting the Huff distribution ratio. As a result of estimating soil erosion quantity, the average soil quantity shows 12.8 and $68.0ton/ha{\cdot}yr$, respectively from 2 years to 200 years frequency. The distribution of soil loss quantity within a watershed was classified into 4 classes, and the hazard zone that has high possibilities of soil erosion was analyzed on the basis of these 4 classes. The hazard zone represents class IV. The land use area of class IV shows $0.01-5.28km^2$, it ranges 0.02-9.06% of total farming area. Especially, in the case of a frequency of 200 years, the field area occupies 77.1% of total fanning area. Accordingly, it is considered that soil loss can be influenced by land cover and cultivation practices.

  • Physically-based WEPP watershed version was applied to a watershed, located at Jawoon-ri, Gangwon with very detailed rainfall data, rather than daily rainfall data. Then it was validated with measured sediment data collected at the sediment settling ponds and through overland flow. The $R^2$ and the EI for runoff comparisons were 0.88 and 0.91, respectively. For sediment comparisons, the $R^2$ and the EI values were 0.95 and 0.91. Since the WEPP provides higher accuracies in predicting runoff and sediment yield from the study watershed, various slope scenarios (2%, 3%, 5.5%, 8%, 10%, 13%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 23%, 25%, 28%, 30%) were made and simulated sediment yield values were analyzed to develop appropriate soil erosion management practices. It was found that soil erosion increase linearly with increase in slope of the field in the watershed. However, the soil erosion increases dramatically with the slope of 20% or higher. Therefore special care should be taken for the agricultural field with higher slope of 20% or higher. As shown in this study, the WEPP watershed version is suitable model to predict soil erosion where torrential rainfall events are causing significant amount of soil loss from the field and it can also be used to develop site-specific best management practices.

  • In this paper, forestry area change effect on the soil erosion in Asan lake watershed was estimated. Temporal variations of land use in the study watershed were analyzed from Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images. Geographic Information System (GIS) combined with Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used to estimate the soil erosion of Asan lake watershed. Spatial data for each USLE factors was obtained from the Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images and 1/25,000 scale digital contour maps. Sediment yield to Asan lake was estimated by sediment delivery ratio and sediment accumulation in lake was estimated by trap efficiency. The estimation methods were validated for sediment accumulation in Asan lake. From the hydrographic survey from 1974 to 2003 for Asan lake, sediment accumulation was measured. The estimated accumulation sediment of 303,569ton/yr showed similar value with observed of 295,888ton/yr. From the validated estimation methods, the increasing amount of soil erosion when 1% of forest area in Asan lake watershed decreases was calculated from 12.91 to 1482.05ton/yr.

  • This study was performed to suggest a soil loss reduction skill through estimating soil erosion from a small watershed including each type of sloping agriland by using GEOWEPP model. Experimental watershed at Gangwon province was selected for very typical sloping fields of highland agriculture in Alpine area. Runoff discharge and sediment load, hourly rainfall amount occurred during storm event were gauged, and weather data were obtained from Daegwallyeong meteorological station. The results of GEOWEPP model estimation showed that relative error values for total runoff discharge and sediment load were 3 %, -14.5 % respectively. Based on the result, soil erosion and waterway path map for each hillslope were made to select target hillslope. Several hillslopes of severe soil erosion were analyezed and then the optimal vegetative filter strip construction width and waterway path to plant grass were decided by using GEOWEPP Model.

  • The land use map of the Nakdong River watershed was classified by each land use contents and analyzed to rank the risk of soil loss and erosion. Also, the soil loss and erosion was evaluated in the Nakdong River watershed using Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) and the subbasin with high risk of soil loss was evaluated with the analysis results of land use contents. Finally, the analyzed results were also compared with the landslide risk map, hence the practical application methods using developed and analyzed results were considered in this study. As a result of land use analysis and RUSLE calculation, it was represented that the Naesung Stream watershed had the high risk for soil loss among the subbasins of the Nakdong River watershed. It was also presented that the high risk area identified by computation of RUSLE was corresponding to the landslide risk area. However, the high risk of soil erosion by land use near the river or wetland was confirmed only through the calculation results of RUSLE.

  • This study conducted a series of field experiments using soil conditioners, Polyacrylamide(PAM) and gypsum, to evaluate their effects in reducing sediment loss and surface runoff. In addition, the correction factors (K-alpha) for the erodibility factor (K) were determined to reflect the effects of PAM and PAM+gypsum in applying the USLE equation. Experimental erosion plots individually sized $10m^2$ (5 m long, 2 m wide and 1 m deep) have different slopes (10, 20 and 30%). Erosion plots were prepared for one control (C; no PAM and gypsum) and two treatments (P; PAM 20 kg/ha, PG; PAM 20 kg/ha+gypsum 3,000 kg/ha). The amounts of soil eroded and runoff were continuously monitored from July $1^{st}$ to Oct. $31^{st}$ in 2010 and compared to each other. The amount of sediment loss from a control plot was 399.2 ton/ha and the relative reduction of sediment loss were 11.4% and 33.4% for PAM-treated and PAM+gypsum treated plots, respectively. This study also determined the K-alpha factors in the USLE equation to account for the erosion control effectiveness of PAM and gypsum application. The K-alpha factors were calculated as 0.92 for PAM-treated plot and 0.69 for PAM+gypsum-treated plot. The findings of this study revealed that soil conditioners (PAM and gypsum) could play a significant role in controlling soil erosion. In addition, the modified USLE equation using the K-alpha could provide valuable information to make better decision on establishment of best management practice for soil erosion control in agriculture.

  • The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) has been applied to the microcomputer based Geographic Information System (GIS) data planes to model a soil erosion map for a county. The conventional method applied by US Soil conservation Service (SCS) has been tedious and time consuming process on a mainframe computer which yields a multisectioned, hard to interprete, line printer map of the each county's soil loss. The new approach proved to be an economical and efficient tool for the natural resource managers in their decision malting in land conservation practice. They can simulate the variety of conservation practices and assess the cost and benefit without physically implementing the conservation measures.7he new approach also can produce all the other graphical and statistical reports.
